Leisha Hailey and Christina Hendricks gather in "La Cucina"

What would it take for you to see a movie most of you have never heard about before? What if I told you it involved food? My Top Chef people are already there. How about if I mentioned it starred Leisha Hailey? Now I’ve hooked a bunch of you. And what if I added it also starred Christina Hendricks. More of you, good. And, finally, what if I were to casually say supermodel Rachel Hunter played a lesbian. And, we have a winner.

The independent film La Cucina is coming to DVD Jan. 12. The romantic drama, which was released in 2007, tells three interweaving stories as the lives of a group of neighbors unfold in, what else, their kitchens. Check out the trailer here.

The film marks Mad Men’s Christina’s feature film debut. She plays Lily, who just met the older Michael (Joaquim de Almeida). Leisha, meanwhile plays it straight and pregnant as Shelly. Her upstairs neighbor and lesbian confidant (doesn’t every straight gal need one?) is Jude (played by Rachel). And Jude, meanwhile, is making a meal for her girlfriend, Celia. Whew, who needs a flow chart?

Now, it’s undeniably weird to see Leisha play married and about to pop. I keep thinking she is having some sort of sympathy pregnancy to make Max feel less alone. Also, her movie husband looks like a dud. Alice would have never left Tasha for him.

And, just in case you think the lesbians are just window dressing, there does appear to be at least a little dyke drama. That lady bringing champagne to Celia’s (Clare Carey of Jericho) room is definitely not Jude.

So, what do you think? Will you wander into La Cucina for a bite?

Leisha Hailey...

All it really took to peak my interest was Leisha Hailey (love her).

Besides Leisha, it sounds like a film that I might take a look at. If it's anywhere as interesting and entertaining as the 2000 film What's Cooking or the 1999 Jorja Fox film Food For the Heart (aka: The Hungry Bachelor's Club) or other such films where the stories are intertwined, it could end up being pretty good.

P.S. My favorite "food" film is still Chocolat with Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche.

i'm all for indie films

It looks interesting and leisha, as adorable as she is, isn't the only draw.  As a foodie, it's the food.  Any movie with food as it's star gets a nod in my book.

Definitely checking this one out.

It looks pretty cool.

Also, isn't the guy playing Leisha's character's husband the guy that played the incredibly smart but socially awkward guy in Legally Blonde..?

Oz Perkins

Yep, that's Oz Perkins, son of actor Anthony Perkins and photographer Berry Berenson, who died in one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade center in 2001.

Another straight role for LH, so sad

At least L.H. escaped Lifetime station....but, still, it's another hetero film, with food. Film with food is in right now.

Still, it doesn't look like Babette's Feast or, Dim Sum or Like Water for Chocolate...

I do love...

...Leisha Hailey and Christina Hendricks, but this movie looks like crap. I may give it a shot anyway, but nothing about that snorefest of a trailer grabbed me in the slightest.

Am I the only sour cherry on the fruitstand?

Seconded

Couldn't have put it better myself. A lot of the reasons I like films are very sterotypical straight male reasons, action, guns, bad guys, cute woman that can kick ass....standing round talking in a kitchen sounds quite boring!!! I may get it if it comes down to a cheep price, just to get a look, but overall, I think I'll pass!

"looks like crap."

Sorry to agree, but I do. Two women we want to see, but not like this?

i'm interested...

this is the sort of movie that i love. one where not much happens except for people talking, but everything occurs in real time. like being a fly on the wall of an ordinary person's kitchen.

and it has lesbians and leisha hailey, so there's no way i'm not checking it out.

Oh, I am getting that movie!

Oh, I am getting that movie!

It has three of my favorite things: Christina Hendricks, food, lesbian drama and Leisha Haley. Okay, four of my favorite things...

Now had it just been a lesbian drama about Hendricks and Haley (or Carey or Hunter, I could go for that too) together, making delicious food, it'd be my all time favorite movie!
