"Law & Order: SVU" tackles trans issues with a familiar face

Last night's Law & Order: SVU was originally supposed to feature the return of Stephanie March's ADA Alex Cabot for a six-episode stint. Let's visualize that together for a minute. Actually, let's visualize Alex and Olivia together for a minute.

Right, and we're back.

But instead of seeing Stephanie, we were treated to a very special episode of Law & Order: SQU (Special Queer Unit). The story involved transgender issues and even featured a couple of real-life lesbians with cameos. Both Daniela Sea and Leah Delaria appeared in the episode. For a moment, it I thought Ilene Chaiken had taken over all of television. It was a scary moment.

Aside from Daniela's seemingly permanent status as Max in the eyes of casting directors everywhere (though, thank heavens they decided to forgo the Gibb brother beard), I thought the episode handled trans issues rather sensitively. The plot involved a 13-year-old girl, Hailey, whose father couldn't accept that she isn't his son Henry anymore and is found beaten nearly to death.

Max, err, Daniela (see, even I'm slipping) plays a leader of a trans group that steals hormones from pharmaceutical companies and gives them to transitioning members of the community who could not ordinarily afford them. Det. Stabler called him a “Robin Hood and Maid Marian all wrapped up into one.” I could have done without that crack, because it's an easy and unnecessary he-she joke.

I also wish the assailant of the girl's father didn't turn out to be the secretly transgender guidance counselor. Even though she came off entirely emphatically, it's still another name to add to the seemingly never-ending master list of LGBT homicidal characters. But, overall the episode seemed to portray the issue with a great deal of tact and understanding.

So, how do you think SVU handled the issue? And, did you do a double-take, too, when Max strolled on screen?

SVU

Yeah, when the guidance counselor turned out to be transgendered, and the attacker, I set down the jar of pennies and instead just rolled my eyes.
Still, overall, and given how over the top SVU has become over the last couple of years, the issue wasn't as poorly handled as it could have been.  And that's my bare wisp of praise.

I was watching...

but when the field of suspects seemed to narrowed down to someone from the queer community, I stopped watching.

After seeing the episode of L&O CI where the guilty party was a man-eating, woman-manipulating bisexual woman...I really had no interest in seeing yet another reason to give the general public reasons to fear us.

Ya know?

Maybe I turned the tv off too soon if it was handled sensitively.

but

does it not happen in the glbt community?

or should we hide the fact that gays and lesbians get abused by other gays and lesbians?

and SVU is based on real cases just with some facts changed.

Mariska & Stephanie?? YES please!

hahaha that's too funny.. Annd we're back.

I can say, with no embarrassment, that I think about those two together more than once a day lol.

I can not wait until Alex comes back in those power skirt suits, those glasses, and that long, golden, blonde hair. Ok I'll stop.

Anyway, I liked the ep. Of course I liked the other SVU trans ep where Shane from the L word played a trans male. I think it was called Fallicy (which is also a great Alex & Olivia ep as far as subtext/hotness).

All I can say is that I'm greatful that the 'others' from the rarely represented transgenered our LGBT community were represented and shown just how hard their lives can be. It's an eye opener for the straight eye I think.

it's was decent. but Mariska Hargitay?? She's the ONLY reason I still watch the damn show. Seriously.

Bridger Zadina

I was really pleased with this episode actually. The boy that played Hailey did such a good job. I was sure he was a girl in real life even when they showed the flat chest when he was changing. I imdbed the episode and saw that it was in fact a boy named Bridger Zadina. That was perfectly casted. I kind of figured it was the guidence couselor before they actually revealed it, but it was a good twist at the end. I enjoyed it. And Daniella Sea, I gave a big whoop! when I saw her. Yeah, could have done without some of Stabler's lines but whatever, you win some, you lose some.

Return of Cabot

Would it be safe to assume that Stephanie March will be in next week's episode then?

Unfortunately, not until

Unfortunately, not until March 10th. The episode was delayed because of Mariska's health problems.

What???

Mariska's health problems? What's going on with her health?
YankeeAg's picture

Meh

I thought the episode was OK. I agree that the handling of the topic was very good, but I had issues with all the "violence" of the transgendered characters.

My other problem with the episode has nothing to do with the topic. I really realized how ridiculous the court scenes are. They would not let the guidance counselor have a 5 minute speech about what happened to her nor would they allow her to look at the jury and ask them what they would feel like if they woke up in the wrong body one day. It just wouldn't happen in a court, in my opinion.

And just for the sake of talking about Mariska...i think she looks way better with short hair. i hate when they have her grow her hair out.

Samfeasor's picture

Realistic Court Scenes are on Court TV

All of the court scenes are pretty ridiculous, in every single episode of every single version of L&O (and pretty much every other fictional legal procedural).  In that sense, this episode felt the same to me as other ones.

Not surprised

I knew from the moment I saw the guidance counselor that she was going to be  transgendered.  Not really a surprising plot twist if you ask me.  I think while this episode was great in terms of tackling such a "taboo" issue I'm sorry to say the episode was boring!

Lately the only stories Im interested in is the ones where Stabler or Olivia are directly in the middle of it.   The best episode so far is when Stabler's daughter gets arrested and we get to see his mom and all the issues surrounding that.

BAS's picture

Really? I did not see that coming

I think it was her hair.  Normally, when you have an MTF they have them all dolled up and definitely have "feminine" hair.  So in that sense, it both tricked me, and I think it was nice to see and MTF that was NOT so crazy.

I also thought that even if it was sad that the culprit ended up being trans, they did such a good job with Haley that overshadowed it.

I'm sure there are people who managed to stay untouched and think "oh man, I'd never let my son do that!", but I think these stories of trans kids can be powerful.  There was one on ER a few years ago that didn't end as happy - the girl's supportive parent (I think a mother) died and when her (I think) dad came to get her, he made her chop off all her hair and put on boy's clothes, and you just see the heartbreak on the poor kid's face.  On one hand that was more powerful, because you saw it get taken away and it was really hard not to feel awful for her, but on the other hand, I love that we are at the point where we can have an episode where the trans kid lives happily ever after and gets to take her hormones and both her parents approve.

I also laughed when Daniela came on.  It was nice to see her without the beard....or belly!  I hope she doesn't get typecast though.

Stephanie March's return..

she comes back March 10th or the 17th.. I can't remember which one. I HOPE it's the 10th.

her retunr got pushed back because of Mariska's injury and shotting was delayed or something. So, it's next month. I think it's the 10th. I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!

Great ep

I really enjoyed the episode. They handled the issue well. Even though the trans counselor was the attacker, they still made you feel something for the character. Even the father who was the victim understood that there are shades of grey with these issues. There were twists and turns throughout. The actor that played Hailey, Bridger Zadina was awesome. A very talented young man. He reminds me of the actor on the episode with the Lindsey/Logan case about the twins and the parents took one that was born as a boy and had a mishap during circumcision and raised him as a girl.  I believe that ep. was called Identity. I've seen that one several times and he gets my heart everytime. Reiley McClendon also a very talented actor.

A brief comment on Stabler's remarks. They are showing that even though he may be open-minded about the whole situation he still is a regular guy. Not everything he says is going to be PC. That is reality so in my mind it works. We still have a long way to go before everybody gets it right. I as a black woman definitely experience white people who say the wrong things around me, and we have a black president for God's sake. There is always going to be some ignorance out there and the show just reflected reality.

I thought it was a well

I thought it was a well written if lop sided episode. Given the track record of the show as of late (Stabler's inability to be sympathetic, Benson's ability to be TOO sympathetic and Finn and Munch <3 completely MIA) I find that they try to handle every situation with as much realism as possible. Stabler's Robin Hood/Maid Marion crack is a natural reaction from him considering how jaded and cynical he's become as a character as of late.

Daniela looked alot like Zac Effron, instead of the Brawny man, but that's just me. I feel bad that she'll seem to continue getting offers for these types of roles, then again, on USA yesterday, they showed the episode where Kate was a M-F transexual accused of murder.

As for the guidence councilor, I thought that THAT was a far more powerful twist than anything else they showed in the episode.

I can wait for Alex, I've been waiting long enough....I hope she replaces the current ADA whose name I just don't care to remember.

Kate Moennig played a MTF

Kate Moennig played a MTF on SVU a while back. I actually just saw the episode yesterday.

I thought

That the episode was actually rather sensitive compared to other ones which had lesbians and trans people in the past.

As always, Mariska's acting was above and beyond duty, and as far as Stabler's answer goes, I agree it is his usual jaded persona...

I'm Stuck Between...

...applauding and crawling into a dark hole. SVU has gotten so messy for me lately that the only reason I really watch anymore is because I've been watching too long to stop now.

I was excited when I realized that this episode was going to feature a trans character, and I prayed to the writing gods that they would not make her the killer. Well, they didn't, they just transfered it over to the other trans character. Great.

They handled the issue itself alright; I could have stood to see a little more sympathy from at least Olivia. Both her and Elliot seemed too emotionless on the topic.

But, it only reminds me of the only other trans character that was ever featured in an episode, played by Katherine Moennig ironically enough. That character got screwed over too, literally and figuratively. If you aren't familiar with the ep, it is definitely one worth watching (Alex Cabot era, and a damn good episode for her at that).

oh lol

Aside from Daniela's seemingly permanent status as Max in the eyes of casting directors everywhere

That has more to do with her beard than anything. How can they cast a female actress in a female role when she has a beard??

flor's picture

Histrionics, and then some

As much as I agree that usually these L&O shows have despicable representation of lesbians et al, and this episode "had its moments",  I practically laughed through the "heart" of this episode--because it was so narsisistic and unrealistic, but more than that, if this wasn't over the top with personality disorders a plenty, I haven't watched enough television!

It also was ridiculously and clearly transparent that the counselor is trans (one is lucky these guidance counselors take ANY interest, let alone THAT much--and to attempt murder??? Please!)

Message: Another queer out of control ready to kill and deceive in order to make a point.

Bottom line: The producers still managed to degrade the "sexual minority" to murderer status.

And, sorry, transporting "Max" from TLW helped less rather than more...

Was right there with:

"Actually, let's visualize Alex and Olivia together for a minute."

Low-Ren-Zo.'s picture

that episode was awesome.

I'm really glad I caught it last night. it was great and I was impressed with it since it's mainstream television. Det. Stabler's comment didn't bother me; it seemed within his character. I was excited that Max was on there, but I'm also aware of the typecasting. But. it happens. Jackie Blane being MTF actually threw me for a loop. Wasn't expecting that although I know I probably should have been. Anyway. Good ep.

Personally, I'd like to picture Det. Benson and Doc. Warner together for a moment. Mmmmm. Forensically delicious.

I thought it was a good

I thought it was a good episode.  The couselor was a bit overzealous trying to help the girl, but given the revelation of her own experience, I guess it was understandable.  As lame and tiring as it is to see lesbian/bi/transgender characters as the villan so to speak, in this episode, I think it helps to understand why she did it.  And maybe others who see the show won't be so quick to judge if/when they come across someone in that situation.  The father wasn't a bad guy, he just didn't understand.  He didn't deserve to be beaten.  And in the end, he was able to deal w/ his child's situation.

I couldn't help but wonder

I couldn't help but wonder if they saw Sea on set as Max ad grabbed her asking if she'd do a few scenes for SVU.

Or that they all watch The L Word and secretly want to have a crossover. I swear for a second I did truly believe that perhaps Sea was actually doing the transgender thing for real. The boy who played Hayley did a good if not whiny job, but my god that hairstyle was naff.

Did anyone else smile when Olivia told Misty to take off her shirt or else she would take it off for her!?

i love that sound they play for a new location (bum-bum)

i love daniela sea and was so glad to see her in the episode and sans beard. also, stabler is a very religious conservative man who cares about his family deeply, and so when hailey asked him what he would do if his son came home in a dress, i thought it was an interesting little inner conflict...the show never stops amazing me. and come on ...Michaela McManus (ADA Kim Greylak)?! wow. wow.

did i mention that daniela sea was lookin' goooooooood?

Well done SVU

Daniel Sea looks MUCH better in the screenshot above than she has on The L Word recently. The 5 o'clock shadow and clean haircut is so much better than Max's recent shagginess.  I can't wait to see this episode and I hope Chaiken and the wardrobe department took some notes for the rest of season six ;)
