Lauren Lee Smith is leaving Las Vegas

No soup for you, CSI. The hit crime drama is parting ways with the Lauren Lee Smith, the artist formerly known as the Soup Chef. Lauren joined the show last season as new CSI Riley Adams. But now, just as original cast member Jorja Fox is set to return for five episodes, Lauren is shown to door. Bummer.

The new season will start with Riley already gone, so Lauren won’t have a chance to say goodbye on screen. Executive producer Naren Shankar confirmed the new to TVGuideMagazine.com earlier this week saying:

It was an issue of how we were feeling the ensemble was working. When we brought in the character of Riley, it got lost in the shuffle a little bit because we had lost Warrick, we had lost Sara, and then in the middle of last season Grissom finally left. I think, as a result, the character never quite found its footing in terms of the rest of the gang.

Now, this may just be residual warm feelings towards her thanks to her adorability as Lara Perkins on The L Word, but I like Lauren on CSI. Granted, she wasn’t given a lot to work with in Riley. Her character has a few stand-out moment, but otherwise wasn’t given much to do.

The producers told The Ausiello Files at EW.com that this season’s theme will be family. Shankar said, “We wanted to restore that balance of the family. And that initial creative impulse led to the notion of Jorja coming back and helping to assist with that.” No word on whether William Peterson’s Grissom, who left at the end of last season to be with Jorja’s Sara Sidle, will return. But producers were adamant that they have not broke up. So, I guess put those Sara/Catherine ’shipper dreams on hold now.

What do you think? Will you miss Lauren? Did you like Riley? And do you think Jorja coming back can bring the CSI family back together?

Jorja Fox

It will be nice to see Jorja Fox again, though my dreams are a bit dashed that she's still with Grissom (such an odd pairing).  I will miss Lauren Lee Smith though.  I thought Riley helped bring a litthe humor to the table.  Either way, i do still adore the show and am excited to see what the new season has to bring.

i dont remember her

being on the l word.

At first I wasn't one for

At first I wasn't one for the whole Riley thing, but I have to admit that she actually wasn't that bad. She seemed kinda like the misfit that had some issues fitting in with the rest of the graveshift crew, but I would have liked to see more of that and whether or not it would have worked out in the end. Too bad she's leaving without as much as a last episode dedicated to her departure (even though she wasn't on the show for that long).

That's crazy!

I remember Katee Sackhoff being chosen for this role but Bruckheimer got involved and Lauren Lee Smith was cast.  If you make a decision, stick with it.  Don't back out of it.  Lauren Lee Smith is a fantastic actress and deserves better treatment, though I have to say I wasn't the biggest Riley fan.  Maybe because I was so sad to see Sarah go.  Though if Sackhoff had been cast I might have carried on watching CSI after Jorja Fox's departure.

Was Sackhoff seriously

Was Sackhoff seriously considered for the role as Riley?

believe it or not...

...so basically had the part (she was going to be a different character, named bryce i think and was going to be surprise surprise, a tough girl replacement for sara) anyway, they decided (producers liked her, cbs didn't as i recall) to not have her do the show and instead we got her on nip/tuck instead, which IMHO was a win
distraet's picture

I haven't seen her in

I haven't seen her in nip/tuck thanks to the lousy TV schedule in Denmark, but if she'd been cast in CSI, the only thing missing was Tricia Helfer and they could start CSI: Battlestar Galactica, which I would glady watch despite the fact that the show has been going downhill the last seasons.

Dollhouse...

....don't know what your "lousy tv schedule" does with dollhouse, but this upcoming season 2 there will be a boys club reunion on that show...tahmoh penikett (i'm sure i spelled that wrong) aka helo and jamie bamber aka apollo will both be there, not to mention there is talk of summer glau!!!

It was something to expect.

It was something to expect. Of course what the ex-producer says is BS, as always in this cases. I pretty much follow every single tv show ratings - even if I only watch 2-3 shows a year and I can tell you how things really went. It has nothing to do with the actress or the "sense of family" they want to create. They don't give a damn about this kind of things. The fact is, CSI - that, for the record I find extremely boring and because of it I don't watch - is losing viewers. To be honest, every single show on broadcast tv lost audience this past year, but TPTB don't take this into much account.

Anyway, they lost viewers mostly because they are in their 9 or 10? year - and therefore it's normal to lose viewership after so long- and also because they lost 3 original cast members in a year, including the lead. They replace him with that famous and prestigious L. Fishbourne, thinking that a big Hollywood name would have been enough to fill the void. Too bad, it didn't work out.

So, they are trying to make come back the old cast in hope that the old viewers will tune again. Can you imagine how much the actors are being paid to come back? They have to make room for them in the show and they can't have something like 10-11 regulars in a show like CSI which is a procedural.( also they have to try to cut costs since CSI being an "old" show is very expensive to make).

We know that what didn't work out  was more L.Fishbourne rather than her, but, as always happens in these cases, the first one to pay for it is the weaker one. It's much much easier to fire  someone like LLS than LF. He has more contactual power, is famous etc etc. The truth is, people didn't embrace LF character, but that's another story. It's Hollywood, people, the producers will never tell you the truth, it's not that they didn't feel the ensemble wasn't working - or better, maybe they see it, but it was due more to LF's character rather than hers( Just look at the screentime,as I said, I don't watch it, but I can predict that LF had 10 times her screentime) - but the truth is that they only took a look a the Nielsen ratings the Friday morning.

 I've never been a J Fox

I've never been a J Fox fan so her coming back to CSI is well (yawn) no big deal. I like L Smith and hope to see her in other roles. CSI has sorta out lived its appeal (all of them Miami, NY, LV, CSI The Moon on and on - ugh whatever). How many times can they show a tech squirting something into a glass beaker for the centerfuge, or those tiny little flash lights when there is a light switch right there; geeze.

Its like law and order; come on do they ever get when enough is enough.  Law and Order this Law and Order that - can you spell over exposed!!

Aww, I liked seeing Smith on CSI...

This bugs the heck out of me

They never gave Lauren's character, Riley, any development on this show. She had a few good episodes when she first started, then they introduced Laurence Fishburne's character, Ray Langston, and suddenly the show was all about him and they totally forgot to develop anything for Riley.

I like Jorja Fox. I liked her character, Sara, back in seasons 1-5, but didn't care for the character after that when it became all about the Sara/Grissom romance crap.  Right now, the only thing keeping me watching is Marg Helgenberger and Liz Vassey.

Aww

She was such a bland character and that wasn't Smiths fault. I want Sofia back now that Sidle is coming back.

well

I liked LLS as Riley but I did not enjoy CSI this season.

I agree with GreenBean2.  I

I agree with GreenBean2.  I loved Sara Sidle, and I totally want Sofia to come back too. I'm a bit of a Sara Sofia shipper :-D

I Love Lauren Lee smith.

Why Smith had to leave the show? can they just paired Fox and smith together?? that would be awesome. I too love sara sidle character.

csi

I absolutely adore Lauren Lee Smith but i wasn't able to actually see her on CSI very much this past year.  It makes me sad that i can't this next year.  but i have to say...  i am very glad that her and Erin Daniels were both in an episode this past season.  it isn't danish but Lara was a sweetheart. How could you not remember

How could you not remember her in the L Word?! One of the most adorable, funny characters there was. Plus, she's super sexy ;)

Why oh why?

How could they axe Lauren Lee Smith just like that? Why?!!!! She's a terrific actress and deserves a second chance with a story of her own. I stopped watching when Jorja Fox left she show but came back coz LLS was gonna be in it. Coz u know.. soup chef!!!! Heheh. Of course my bestfriend and I are thrilled that Jorja's coming back. However, it would have been interesting to see Sidle and Riley work together. So sad that we won't see Lauren again on tv, sigh. They should atleast say why Riley left in the first ep of the new season.

Liz Vassey please

I'm hoping this means more Liz Vassey! I definitely think they need to bring her up to the forefront of the show more!
BunnyBabe's picture

Yes! Please!

I was never really a big fan of Riley (like the actress, just hated the character). I think mostly because I was hoping they'd make Liz a regular and stop with the "Special Guest Star" nonsense instead of adding a new member to the team. Liz as a CSI in training was just adorable! I hope they finally open their eyes and do the right thing this time. :)

FINALLY.

I stopped watching CSI because Lauren Lee Smith had joined the cast, and because Grissom had left. I'm SO glad she's leaving, I hated her so much.

Hopefully Grissom will come back too :]]]

I'm going to start watching CSI again in 5 episodes ^-^; -cant wait-
