Kelly Clarkson rocks my world

I have always liked Kelly Clarkson. She is my favorite American Idol winner to date, thanks to her big voice, spunky attitude and everygirl charm. Plus, who doesn't love singing along to "Miss Independent" in the car?

As the cover girl on this month's Elle, the tiny Texan dons a suit and opens up about her embattled new album, her guarded personal life and her unvarnished take on the industry. After finishing the whole thing, my only thought was, "Rock on, sister friend!"

The singer of killer breakup songs confessed that she has never been in love: "I love my friends and my family. But I have never said the words 'I love you' to anyone in a romantic relationship. Ever." Wow, kind of makes you feel sorry for her three past boyfriends mentioned in the article.

With her new album "My December" coming out later this month, Kelly quickly cuts through the BS surrounding its release: "I've sold more than 15 million records worldwide, and still nobody listens to what I have to say. Because I'm 25 and a woman … I am a good singer, so I can't possibly be a good writer. Women can't possibly be good at two things. I haven't lost my temper about it. It only drives me more. If your thing is to bring me down, cool. I'll just work harder."'

Oh, and it only gets better. Kelly talks about her return to the American Idol stage for the charity fundraiser "Idol Gives Back," where she sang Patty Griffin's "Up to the Mountain."

"My label wanted me to sing 'Never Again.' And I was like, to promote yourself on a charity event is beyond crass. People are starving and dying and I'm up there singing some bitter pop song? And believe me, everyone wanted me to sing it. Because they are jaded and they have no soul. Imagine sitting in a room full of people totally against you. Can't they hear themselves speaking? Capitalize on AIDS? Are you kidding? Insulting an entire nation of people? I just refused."

I've officially upgraded my like to love. And just when you thought she couldn't be any cooler, she goes and cements her status as the perfect antidote to all the BritneyLindsayParises of the world.

A short list of things Clarkson doesn't want:

A clothing line.
A fragrance with her name on the bottle.
A television show.
A movie role.
A toy dog in a leather jacket.

Like I said, rock on.

Kelly Clarkson

Love Kelly Clarkson and have ever since she was on the 'American Idol'.  Her music is great, too, and I look forward to buying her new album.  Not to mention, she sounds really cool and isn't afraid to say what's on her mind.  I love that!

TheWeyrd1's picture

I do need to show more support...

And buy her CD's...not that I would mind at all!

Kelly is awesome

She's never been in love alright, with a man.  This may just be wishful thinking but it sounds like somebody doesn't know they're gay yet.  How amazing would it be if she was a lesbian or bi?  You have to admit that she does rock that suit pretty darn well.

Maturity

While I would be more than happy to welcome Ms. Clarkson to the team, I can't read her admission of not being in love as anything more than maturity. It takes maturity to look back and see things for what they are ... and true romantic love is rarely realized at such a young age.

*sigh* I agree with you Lisa, I was merely wishing.
Very well put, btw.

I do like her, but I'm going

I do like her, but I'm going to reserve judgment on the whole "Kelly is being discriminated against by her management" thing until I've actually heard some of the songs she's written. Have you considered the possibility that they may just not be very good?

I don't think it's just women who get given a hard time when they say they're going to write their own material. Ronan Keating is a solo singer in the UK, who's had a lot of success singing other people's songs; and what Simon Cowell had to say about him was "Ronan Keating says he wants to write his own material. Bye-bye, Ronan Keating".

Record companies want to go with something that sells, they want to go with something that is proven to work - and if Kelly Clarkson has sold millions singing other people's commercial poppy songs, then it's unsurprising that they'd want to stick with that formula. They don't care about art or self-expression.

A lot of singers want to write their own material because of the extra 'credibility' it produces and also simply for reasons of ego. They may have talent as songwriters, they may not.

Of course, if Kelly's own self-penned songs turn out to be a huge hit with the public and sell records, then you'll hear the record company changing their tune.

I agree...

I'm not going to go down the "just because she's a woman" road that Kelly's putting out because I don't think that "Never Again" is that well written.  It's a start and she can improve but as to quote the AI judges, "I'm not jumping out of my seat."  But I do like that she's writting her own stuff.

I loved Kelly on her season of AI but I'm not digging this rawk thing she's doing.  I enjoy her voice more singing the pop songs more than her raspy rawk voice now. Maybe somewhere in the middle would work, for me.

I agree with Kelly on not singing "Never Again" on IGB.

I understand your hesitation, but...

Kelly specifically said in her interview with Entertainment Weekly that she OVERHEAD label execs mention the whole "because she's a young woman" thing.

"It’s because I’m a woman… a young woman. I literally heard somebody say it. They didn’t know I was on the phone… I hung up. I was like, ‘I can’t even address that… That was the most ignorant thing I’ve ever heard."

She heard it first hand, so I don't think she's just trying to make excuses for it. Will her self-penned songs suck? It's always possible, but writing or co-writing songs on her last album seemed to work out just fine - after all, she won four ASCAP awards for songwriting.

Even more important - Kelly doesn't care whether people think they suck. She's not afraid to fail, as long as she fails on her own terms. That's incredibly admirable, I think, when it would be so much easier to be like Avril and try to mimic your last album in the hopes of cashing in the same way. Mere pop stars hope to make bucks - true artists hope to constantly grow, even if there are some missteps along the way.

i get your point

but don't compare her to ronan keating! she's a million miles from ronan keating. she is genuinely talented, ronan keating is only famous because he was in a crappy boyband. yes, he can carry a tune, but that's about it. plus he covered 'iris' (goo goo dolls) without getting their permission, the swine.

i do get your point though, i think women are way too quick to assume that if something isn't going their way career-wise it's because they're female. not that i'm saying this is the case here, it's just a possibility.

Kudos for Kelly

I have been a huge fan of Kelly since her audition on American Idol. If you've paid attention to her comments and interviews you'd know that Kelly isn't about her ego. Kelly is not going to sell out her artistry to be a money making puppet for Clive Davis. They don't tell painters to only paint landscape scenes of beaches because it's what people want to buy. So I don't think they shouldn't tell artists what to sing. Song writers aren't writing for you, they write for themselves. I love that Kelly isn't trying to sell records, she's just trying to be listened- not just heard. There is a difference.

Oh and I'll be attending my 3rd Kelly concert in August. She sounds better live than she does on her cd's. Rock on Kelly!

browne's picture

<I love that Kelly isn't

<I love that Kelly isn't trying to sell records>

Yeah, but you can see why the record company doesn't love it :P

I'm not trying to put her down, I think she's got a breathtaking voice (I did like "Because of You", which I think she actually did write), and I would agree that she doesn't particularly seem to be about ego. I can just see things from the record company's view as well - and I don't think their view is based just on her being young or being a woman.
WeatherLover's picture

I didn't think it was possible...

... but I love her even more now! Could it be that my crush has never said I love you to someone in a romantic way before because she needs to come to our side of the fence? Hey, one can dream, right? I love her strength and eagerness to stand up to all the B.S. that Hollywood propounds. What a strong woman ready to take on the world. You said it best, Rock On!

Money Bags

:) And I'm sure it's not the best choice for her bank account either. But I get your point about the record company. I just hope she proves them wrong.

We don't really know the trials she's had with the album so maybe behind the scenes she is being bullied about the album because she is a young female singer/song writer. It's how she feels so you have to give her the benefit of the doubt that there is some validity to how she feels.

You've got to check her out in concert if you get the opportunity.

I'm going to see her in

I'm going to see her in August too! Only, this will be my first time. Woot!

Damn, that girl can rock a suit, can't she!?

awww kelly virgins! how sweet!

I never thought a show could be that good. Last one I went to she did a song out in the middle of the audience on a stool with one dude playing the guitar! She sings her friggin booty off! My first concert of hers we were in a small venue and she pointed me out in the crowd saying "Wow she's having a good time." So hopefully I can make a spectacle of myself and she'll laugh at me again. lol I hope you have a blast!!!

i admire Kelly

because ever since she's become the first american idol winner, she has handled herself in a beautiful way. if you look at her first album to the newcoming 'my december' they are completely different. i believe kelly has been battling head to head with her label execs since day one. ive been a clarkson fan since idol and have seen and heard her talking about it since. kelly is a rocking chick, and when she won idol they wanted a pop-y chick. she's struggled with them since day one, and i think she is finally coming into her own now and its awesome to see.

rock on, kelly. rock on!

It's Not A Person's Body

That draws me to them, it's their deeds - this paragraph alone had me reconsidering upgrading my admiration for Kelly -

NOW THAT'S BEING REAL. Other singers usually do sing their own songs at charity events, but obviously not Clarkson.

And I'm tired of this whole 'Wish she was a lesbian thing' because to me, and this is just my opinion, it reinforces the whole 'lesbians aren't happy with what they've got'. Hey, lesbian or not, she's a fantastic singer and writer, let's be content with that and also be thankful that we're in the day and age where we can appreciate this kind of music, and have the things we've got. To sound like my Grandmother, back in the days of old, we had nothing but a ham radio and a can of peas to amuse us - be thankful for what you've got today!

Disclaimer - If anyone disagrees with me, that's fine, I'm not going to argue, nor return to this thread to see if anyone's had a go at me, each to their own and I'm just sharing some thoughts. *grin* Peace, y'all.

When she calls my name, I turn and in that instant I lose my heart. This is the love of my life.

Kelly Clarkson

I love her as well, I like her style, her voice, her looks. And kudos to her for not promoting Never Again on Idol Gives Back, that's an amazing and strong statement she made. As for the new album: I'll reserve judgment till I've actually had a chance to listen to My December, but her frustration with not being taken seriously as a young woman songwriter seems to stem from experience, so there's probably some truth to it. (Not that this really surprises me.) I like how she's says: It only drives me more. I'll just work harder. You go, Kelly! :)

On a sidenote: My gaydar's been pinging as well, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. ;) But I can totally see why the lesbian and bi community would embrace such a strong, unconventional woman, no matter what her preferences are.

i heart Kelly

I have to say, i was a fan of Kelly's since her Miss Independent days (although then it was more of a 'guilty' pleasure) but i think she is really coming into her own now. I personally love this rockier edge to her, i think she can do the heavier stuff as well if not better than the pop stuff, and I for one am always happy to cheer on additions to the rawk chick group.

I think she is simply beautiful, has a figure to die for, esp with the curves (sigh.....) and an amazing voice, and then, when i read articles like this i simply fall more in love with her. It's so great to see people who can think for themselves and can make a stand for things they believe in, and a better antithesis to the britneys and paris's of the world I can't imagine.

Go Kelly!! (and by the way Em, you have some serious competition on your hands for her - shall we take it outside? ;-)  )

Kelly!!

I have ALWAYS loved Kelly.

I saw her in concert about 18 months ago and i cant wait for her to come back to the UK (next year i think)

Kelly is so great because she is so real. You can tell she hasnt bought into all the industry crap. Shaking lose her American Idol image and changing management must have been an incredibly difficult thing to do, and it could have totally backfired but she did it to be true to herself and look how well it's worked.

Kellys success is astounding. Especially as in Britain all the talent to come out of our talent shows quickly disappears or only caters to a niche fanbase.

Kelly will always be strong. This is why she is so great and in my opinion her songs are so believable.

GO KELLY!!!

Much Respect

I know I may get ragged out for this but I feel as if I'm the only one who's gonna post that they're not a Kelly fan.  To me her music was neither here nor there and believe it or not I'm not an Idol fan either, I've never watched even one episode ever.

I do have to add that she has earned my respect and some admiration based on what I've just read.  I wish her all the best.  She does have talent but I'm not into her music I guess.  I do have one of her first singles and it's pretty good "I Wanna Love You Forever".  Very awesome and strong voice on that.  And the funny thing is when I got the song I didn't even know that she was an Idol winner.'

I wish her all the very best especially on this album that she has taken it upon herself to write her own songs.

GOOD LUCK KELLY!!

More2Life's picture

Not Kelly's Song...

"I Wanna Love You Forever" is thankfully not one of Kelly's songs. It does belong, however, to Jessica Simpson.

I can forgive you for this mistake (though how one could confuse Jessica's voice for Kelly's more powerful and passionate one is beyond me).

But anyway, any respect/admiration gained is a great thing. So thanks for at least trying to see the positive parts of Kelly and her career.
