Kat Dennings nails a role in the new "Thor"

That movie about the guy with the hammer just got a little more interesting. Kat Dennings has joined the cast of the new live-action adaptation of Thor alongside Natalie Portman.

The Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist star will join an impressive cast that includes Natalie, Anthony Hopkins, Stuart Townsend and Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god of thunder himself with Kenneth Branagh directing.

Now, if a superhero movie starring Oscar nominee Natalie and indie darling Kat seems a little strange, you’re not alone. But then stranger things have happened. I mean, if they can make Seth Rogen a superhero then all bets are apparently off.

Natalie will play “doctor/scientist type” Jane Foster, who has been upgraded from her original comic book incarnation as a nurse. No official word on what Kat will play yet, but according to slashfilm.com a casting breakdown released earlier show a character that seems custom-fit for her:

“[MARCY LEWIS] (20) Is a college student. Aloof, jaded beyond her years, she thought her internship with scientist Kate Spelling would be an easy 6 college credits. However, she’s been stuck for months in this small New Mexico town and relegated to a wide range of unglamorous activities. Kate has been particularly hard on Marcy, making it her personal project to see that Marcy lives up to her potential. Marcy deals with her situation both by using subtle irony and by being an overt wiseass.”

Kat being a wiseass, Natalie playing a doctor. Hmm, maybe I could use a little hammertime. As Natalie told MTV.com, “Well, I was really excited when they told me Kenneth Branagh is directing it because it seemed like such a smart choice but such an unexpected choice, that it was like 'This is really weird. I have to try this.’” Me too, Natalie, me too.

    I'm seeing Thor regardless, I see all superhero movies. But this news makes me exceedingly more excited!

    I'm not a Thor junkie particularly but this looks (so far) like it could be a quality epic.  Hope it ties nicely into the rest of the Marvel Movie Universe...because it'd be cool if The Avengers came true...

    I think this movie is gonig to be good. Also, Thor's nemesis is Loki who has the ability to turn into a woman so it'll be like totally cool if Kat plays a female Loki.

    On the front pge this is described as " the live-action adaption of a 1980s animated series." WTF? Don't you mean an adaptation of the comic book created in 1962? Also, while Jane started as a nurse, she's been a doctor in the comics for many years now. 

    BTW, a character is revealed as a lesbian in the current issue of Marvel's 'Dark Avengers':

    Hmm, not sure where the "live-action adaption of a 1980s animated series" came from on the frontpage. But that wasn't my understanding or intent. Apologies.

    Also, cool about the Dark Avengers reveal. Sexy ladies kick-boxing is also a plus.

    I'd pretty much see Kat Dennings in anything, throw Natalie Portman in too and I'm so stoked! 

    If you like things that are a little weird and a lot hilarious you should read Kat's blog at katdennings.com she has me laughing out loud with each post.

    I love Kat Dennings she is my indie princess! I would've totally seen this movie even if she wasnt in it because I love Natalie Portman but with Kat in it makes me want to see it that much more

    I'm not a particularly big Natalie Portman fan - all I see when I think of her now is ManicPixieDreamGirl in Garden State, and the horrendous Queen Amidala. But Kat Dennings! I'm echoing all the sentiment that's been written before me. Indie, curvy, delightfully different. She looks like Rachel Weisz, she acts like a cross between Kristen Stewart and Evan Rachel Wood. what else do you want?

    Have they cast Enchantress??  It would suck to have these hot ladies in the film, and no Enchantress causing mayhem and mischief with Loki. :(

    I doubt they'll have her in this movie - it would make for too many characters - but possibly in any sequel. Having seen her play evil in the Golden Compass, I'm thinking Nicole Kidman could nail the role.

    I will definatly be seeing this one, I love superhero movies, even the bad ones! And Kat Dennings has been awsome in everything I've seen her in! I can't wait to see this one :)

    I have not even heard of Kat Dennings before but after I looked up her credits and photos, SHE SHOULD PLAY A ROLE IN THE TWILIGHT SERIES! Because her skin tone is totally vampirish :D

    Hey I would go to see both of them. I gotta soft spot for Natalie P. So if you want to talk smack about her, I'll meet you outside the computer!!! ;[
