Julia Roberts will "Eat. Pray. Love" for us this summer

Here’s a question: Would you pay to watch Julia Roberts travel the world? If yes, settle in and make yourself comfortable. If no, well, are you sure? Because you’ve already paid to see her play a hooker and that’s a lot more far-fetched. So why don’t you settle in anyway and we can all decide together because the trailer for her new film Eat. Pray. Love. is here to answer that question.

Based on the wildly popular bestselling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert of the same name, the movie tells the true-life story of the author’s road to self discovery during a year of travel abroad. Spoiler Alert: she eats, prays and loves.

The trailer looks a little like the best-produced Travel Channel show ever. The film is directed by Ryan Murphy, the mastermind behind Glee, Nip/Tuck and Popular. His only other big-screen directorial effort was also a memoir adaptation, 2006’s Running with Scissors. Knowing the man behind Glee did this makes me feel a little disappointed that no one broke into song or an elaborate dance number. But, lack of jazz hands aside, the film looks at the very least lush.

Though, I wish when Julia’s character says, “I need to change. Since I was 15, I’ve either been with a guy or breaking up with a guy,” that she meant changing teams entirely — if you know what I mean. Because that would a movie I would really, really love to see. But instead Billy Crudup, James Franco and Javier Bardem all play her love interests. Eh, her loss.

Now, I have not read the book. (I’m generally adverse to all sorts of self improvement stories — why make yourself feel like even more of a slacker?) But I do enjoy at least two of the three verbs in the movie’s title, so I could be persuaded.

So, what do you think? This summer will you eat popcorn in the theater before the film starts while praying that you’ll love it?

The book is great!

I´ve read the book (given to me because the going overseas/Eat and discovering love/Love part applied to me hehe), and I can´t wait for the movie! The scenery looks absolutely stunning and I have a feeling that Julia Roberts will be able to pull of how I imagined Elizabeth to be!

Gotta love Florence and the Machine too, love that song!

Good Book

I really liked the book.  Kinda cheesy and she can be a little...self-involved? self-important?... but the book is about her and her year, so I'll give her one.  I'm just not sure how it will translate on screen.  I probably will see it at some point, though.

Also, Javier Bardem is much to young to play her lover.  The real guy was in his 50s when they met, if I'm not mistaken.  But the dynamic of him being older was, I thought, kind of important for their relationship.  But Javier Bardem is younger than Julia Roberts.  oh, hollywood.

You're definitely right

You're definitely right about the Javier Bardem character.  I thought hollywood only did this to female characters so I suppose it's better that there isn't a double standard when it comes to making characters younger.   Obviously no one wants to see someone of any gender above 45 have a sexual relationship /sarcasm.

Nah, I'm still waiting for her to play gay.

Book to film

I'm a bit wary of this film.  I really liked the book, and film adaptations are so iffy.  One of the best things about the book is Elizabeth's voice.  It's much harder to get that first person perspective in a film.  Julia Robert's attatchment didn't exactly quell my fears.  At best I only kind of like her.  Ryan Murphy is a different matter though.  Glee and Popular are two of my favorites, and I'm excited to see him behind the helm of a movie.  It looks like the film stays pretty close to the book from the preview (save for some age descrepencies) so I'm willing to give it a try.  If I hate it I'll just read the book again.

Definitely

Oh I'll be seeing it.  I love Julia Roberts.  One of my favorite actresses -- If not my favorite.  :D

I actually really liked this

I actually really liked this book and was reading it while I was getting over a break up that left me numb and depressed and all sorts of fucked up. I read it slowly and I felt like I grew with her, minus the praying part but even then I interpreted it (and that last part of the book) as taking time out for yourself and doing some self reflecting and figuring myself out again which was huge for me.

I'm not too excited for it to go on film, I have the visuals in  my head already and I like them how they are. In the trailer Julia doesn't seem as lost as "Liss" was (as I was?) I dunno... I'll watch it bc I love Julia in general, because I liked the book, but I'm preparing myself not to like it to be honest.

who knows...

I really enjoyed the book and I LOVE that they cast julia roberts. I'm a little weary of javier bardem as the lead male but you never know. I'm certainly not expecting a best seller, but maybe a cute chickflick to watch while curled up with your hunny? There is hope yet.

I'm looking forward to the movie, not expecting it to be better than the book, which I loved..  It looks like a feel-good summer flick, nothing more, nothing less.

I absolutely adore Eat Pray

I absolutely adore Eat Pray Love and I recommend it to anyone. I am a little concerned that it is the same director that did Running with Scissors, although I liked the movie, I am obsessed with all of Auguston Burroughs work so naturally I was mildly disappointed.
