Jane Lynch, Lily Tomlin, Toni Collette and Archie Panjabi among Emmy nominees
Sometimes, you feel like kissing the Emmys right on the mouth. Sometimes, you want to slap them right on the kisser instead. This year, aside for a few scowl-worthy decisions, the smack the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will be the big wet, sloppy kind. Nominations were announced this morning and among the honorees were Jane Lynch, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Archie Panjabi, Chris Colfer and Betty freaking White.

A host of new and returning series felt the Emmy love including first-timers Glee, Modern Familyand The Good Wifeas well as veteran favorites 30 Rock, True Bloodand Lost. Out gay actors receiving nods included Lynch, Colfer, Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming and Lily Tomlin. Leading the way with 19 nominations was all-singing, all-dancing phenomena Glee. Don’t stop believing, indeed.

A look at this year’s major nominees by category:
OUTSTANDING DRAMA
—Lost
—Breaking Bad
—Dexter
—Mad Men
—True Blood
—The Good Wife
Snap Judgment: Deserving first-time nod for The Good Wife and fitting swan-song nod for Lost.
OUTSTANDING COMEDY
—Glee
—Modern Family
—Curb Your Enthusiasm
—Nurse Jackie
—30 Rock
—The Office
Snap Judgment: Fans of Big Bang Theory and Community are gathering their pitchforks, but this is a still solid and very competitive category. Me, I would have loved a Parks and Recreation nod. And, as much as I hate to admit it, I think 30 Rock’s three-year reign is over.
OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
—Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
—Mariska Hargitay (Special Victims Unit)
—Glenn Close (Damages)
—Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
—January Jones (Mad Men)
—Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Snap Judgment: Finally, some love for Friday Night Lights. Though, I call it right now: And the Emmy goes to Julianna Margulies.
OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
—Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
—Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
—Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)
—Hugh Laurie (House M.D.)
—Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
—Matthew Fox (Lost)
Snap Judgment: Ditto on the FNL love. But major, major snub for the swaggerific Timothy Olyphant in FX’s new neo-Western Justified. If you watch, you’ll be guns blazing about this oversight as well.
OUTSTANDING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
—Lea Michele (Glee)
—Tina Fey (30 Rock)
—Toni Collette (The United States of Tara)
—Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
—Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
—Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)
Snap Judgment: I could not love all the women in this category more. It’s seriously impossible.
OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
—Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)
—Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
—Matthew Morrison (Glee)
—Steve Carell (The Office)
—Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)

Snap Judgment: If Tony Shalhoub wins again, I swear to God, I am going to drown myself in hand sanitizer.

—John Slattery (Mad Men)
—Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)
—Martin Short (Damages)
—Terry O’ Quinn (Lost)
—Michael Emerson (Lost)
—Andre Braugher(Men of a Certain Age)
Snap Judgment: As much as her deserves the recognition, it’s weird seeing Martin Short in the dramatic category, right?
OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
—Jane Lynch (Glee)
—Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)
—Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
—Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
—Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY
—Chris Colfer (Glee)
—Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother)
—Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family)
—Jon Cryer (Two and A Half Men)
—Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
—Ty Burrell (Modern Family)
Snap Judgment: I just want to pinch Chris Colfer’s cheek and buy him an ice cream.
OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES
—Mary Kay Place (Big Love)
—Sissy Spacek (Big Love)
—Shirley Jones (The Closer)
—Lily Tomlin (Damages)
—Ann-Margret (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit)
—Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost)
Snap Judgment: Elizabeth Mitchell should win an Emmy for the way she can raises an eyebrow and crosses her arms, alone.
OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES
—Beau Bridges (The Closer)
—Ted Danson (Damages)
—John Lithgow (Dexter)
—Alan Cumming (The Good Wife)
—Dylan Baker (The Good Wife)
—Robert Morse (Mad Men)

—Christine Baranski (The Big Bang Theory)
—Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives)
—Kristin Chenoweth (Glee)
—Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live)
—Betty White (Saturday Night Live)
—Elaine Stritch (30 Rock)
—Jane Lynch (Two And A Half Men)
Snap Judgment: Tina, Cheno, Jane and Betty freaking White? Too much good stuff.
OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES
—Mike O’Malley (Glee)
—Neil Patrick Harris (Glee)
—Fred Willard (Modern Family)
—Eli Wallach (Nurse Jackie)
—Jon Hamm (30 Rock)
—Will Arnett (30 Rock)
Snap Judgment: Give it to Mike O’Malley because no TV dad made me cry more this season, in a good way.
OUTSTANDING VARIETY, MUSIC, OR COMEDY SERIES
—The Colbert Report
—The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
—Real Time With Bill Maher
—Saturday Night Live
—The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien
Snap Judgment: Suck it, Jay Leno.
So, what did you think of this year’s nominations? Who should win? Who got snubbed? And can we just make Jane Lynch the president of television and get it over with?
