Ilene talks Times – are we ready to listen?
Would you pay $30 to hear Ilene Chaiken talk? No? How about if I told you she was bringing Jennifer Beals along with her? Still no? Wow, tough crowd. What if I told you there'd be ice cream? Fine, so there won't be ice cream but I had to offer something.

The L Word creator, executive producer, killer-offer-of-characters-beloved-and-otherwise will take part in The New York Times discussion series Times Talk on April 20 in New York City. Oh, and Jennifer Beals will be there, too. Yes, that's how it is billed in the Times Talk calendar, well, minus the killer-offer stuff.

And, once again, that billing is a microcosm of what was wrong with The L Word. It was always Mama Chaiken's puppet show. Everyone else were just her marionettes, and no matter how well they performed the strings always showed.

The talk will be moderated by Times reporter Kim Severson, a food writer for the paper. OK, I don't remember any particularly memorable recipes in The L Word, but I guess they were always eating or drinking something at The Planet.
Actually, the talk, titled “Life After 'The L Word',” will discuss how the show “broke new ground for those involved in the show as well as for the lesbian community, its impact on television, media, current events and pop culture — and what’s coming next for them all.”

Well, if by “broke new ground” they actually mean “made me scream at my television,” then the topic sounds about right.
Though the whole thing has me a little concerned. The description calls the who killed Jenny fiasco an “intriguing 'whodunit' plot twist.” Well, if by “intriguing” they actually mean “incomprehensible” and by “plot twist” they actually mean “unsuccessful attempt to ensure the creation of a ludicrous prison-themed spin-off,” then that sounds about right.

So, got your ticket yet?

I'm there...
I don't care... puppet show or not... JB is going to be there then so am I! She's brilliant, beautiful and I'm looking forward to hearing what she has to say. I hope there's a Q&A so we can ask WTF Ilene was thinking?!

Yes, and I just bought
I would pay just to see
I would pay just to see Jennifer as she is so smart and yummy.
I am a fan of The L Word but can't stand IC's ego and where she took the show. It would have been more powerful had she written a more honest show (eg. someone like dana wouldn't have died so quickly, charcters changing their whole attidude, the stupid whodoit story)
I am so looking foward to The L Word Down Under convention so I can ask the actresses 'what exactly do you think of the overall writing of the show?' Strength and weakness plot wise?

Finally someone sticks up for the show!!
Bought mine the other day
Ilene
I heart her...
If Jennifer Beals wanted to tie me up and take advantage of me, I would so let her. What, huh? What are we talking about here?...lol!
Jennifer Beals is going to be on Lie To Me in a couple weeks. Yay!
Open to all of life's possibilities...
Well,
I agree with almost everyone here
There are no innocent parties. Ilene is egomaniacal. Jen Beals is gorgeous, and for some reason, the defacto spokeswoman for the cast (anyone else notice that?) Kim Severson is a foodie journalist who's only real credentials for this interview involve her being a lesbian (is she? who knows, but my gaydar is pinging!). Because we all know all lesbians watch the L Word.
Was the L Word influential? Did it break new ground? Yes. Did Ilene steal an original concept and use her influence to kick the original creators off? Looks like it. Does she have shame? Absolutely not. However, she also has to take the blame for BETTY, for the craptastic writing, the stereotyping and the incredibly bad end to a show that started incredibly good.
Karma is a bitch. I have a feeling it will catch up to her. Besides, I can just see some woman hitting on her in an attempt to "meet Shane." lol.

I would definitively pay to say thank you to Ilene and Jennifer
Yes we have to say thank you to Ilene Chaiken and Jennifer Beals because... remember? 6 years ago, lesbians didn't even exist on media!!!!
So a big THANK YOU to the L word team.
For all the grumbling
For all the grumbling that goes on here, there and especially on the showtime message board, the 400 seat theater was packed! The moderator was terrific and although some questions and answers from Beals and Chaiken were rehashed from previous interviews, most of the content was pretty entertaining. It was cute to see all the young dyklettes swooning over Jennifer. Come to think of it, she is even more stunning in person! Lovely way to while away 90 minutes on a wickedly cold and stormy night.
