Those Potter kids make growing up look like magicThis summer movie season, I couldn’t care less about machines that turn into bigger machines. I’m not moved by the superhero with sticky powers and I couldn’t tell you why Bruce Willis is still dying hard. What I do care about is these three kids — Harry, Hermione and Ron — who have gone from adorable pre-adolescence to graceful young adulthood in the last six years. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opens next week, and I, for one, can’t wait. Much to my own surprise, I’ve turned into a true fan of the movie franchise that at first I dismissed as only kid stuff. My interest went from casual to come-on-when-is-the-next-one-already with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Since the third film, the stories have become more nuanced, the direction more dark. And it helps that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint no longer look like they play with Legos. This week, HBO aired an exclusive 13-minute preview of Order of the Phoenix, complete with clips and interviews. All I can say is bring on the wizard battle royal. Watching the actors go from 11-12 years old in the first film to 17-18 now has been a rare cinematic treat. It’s not often outside of the confines of series television that you get to see someone grow up before your eyes as the same character. So far, despite living in the fishbowl of celebrity, they’ve turned out pretty freaking great. While everyone went crazy over Daniel’s naked horseplay in Equus earlier this year, I’ve kept my eye on Emma instead. (Hey, not like that. I’m not a skeezy old lady. OK, fine, I’m a little skeezy.)
In March, there were some rumblings about the 17-year-old actress balking at coming back for the final two films. But she re-signed shortly thereafter and addressed the issue at a press conference in London for the film.
Heavens, she is Hermione Granger. Submitted by on July 5, 2007 - 12:45pm. |

I Can't Wait...
It's amazing how grown the kids are. It doesn't seem that long ago that the "Sorcerer's Stone" came out.
I've been a big Harry Potter fan since the first book. But like you, with the movies, I didn't start reading the first one until the fourth book was just about to be published. I was hooked within the first chapter and I was so happy that I got to read the four books one right after the other, because it was really hard waiting for the fifth one to come out. I'm now waiting for the seventh book and no matter what happens, I'm already sad knowing that it is indeed the last one.
The movies have done a good job of capturing the spirit of the books. And each movie gets better because the kids are getting older and they're starting to learn more about real life. The best thing is knowing there are two movies left, so it's not all over just yet.

Considering shes only a
Considering shes only a little younger than me, I have the luxury of not feeling like a skeeze, because she is definitely one of my celebrity crushes. It insane how beautifully she's grown up and matured. I wish other child actresses could have grown up as gracefully as she did.

I am thoroughly excited
I am thoroughly excited about the fifth film and even more excited about the 7th book coming out. I have so many questions. I have entertainment ADD, so I never stick with one thing very long. Most tv shows and movies are out of my obsession within a week. However, the Harry Potter books and movies are so incredibly stimulating for me, I just can't put the books down and I've bought all of the films. Sigh, its sad, but I do love watching the trio grow up, even though Daniel Radcliffe kind of gets on my last nerve. He is a good actor, and a hard worker, but lately its all the same expressions. I have heard mixed reviews on the fifth film, so we will see if I really want to see the final two after this one. But, the fifth book was the hardest for me to read as well, so we'll see.
On a side note, I knew I was really into Harry Potter last night when I picked up a sparkler and shouted "Expelliarmus!" (sp?) at the little neighbor boy, who immediately threw his sparkler out of his hand and told me I was magic. Ah, seven year olds are fun... but I felt goofy afterwards. ;)
Forget Harry Potter,
Forget Harry Potter, yaaawner. I just came from watching Transformers and it was AWESOME! I didn't know much about them before hand and only saw one trailer a while back but the movie was AWESOME so let's not be knocking down Transformers, mmkay? Plus, Megan Fox, HAAAAWT.
ps. Just wanted to give a different view than the Harry Potter mania that's probably about to ensue with the comments so please don't shoot me.
IDK, about HP being a
IDK, about HP being a yawner, but I totally agree with the whole transformers thing. Most exciting movie I think I've ever seen. And Megan Fox is just... unbelievably hot!!!

Emma Watson... mmm mmm mmm :-)
Hermione is my Guilty Pleasure.... :-)
at the risk of sounding proper dubious, i could see Emma Watson had potential to be haawwwt from the first film, and man oh man, is it great to be proven right :-))
hehehe i was right about Natalie Portman from her Leon days, and i'm right again. still though, does it reflect badly on me that i crush on a girl 9 years my junior? is it??

for me, it's all about the
for me, it's all about the books. they're so much better than the movies. yet i also love to see the movies, too, because they reaffirm all the various descriptions of scenery, characters, etc., that i have in my head. it's awesome that j.k. rowling had the opportunity to be a consultant on each of the films so that the films remain true to her visions. and it's just a testament to both her vivid imagination and her writing abilities that the film's portrayals and the images in my head always turn out to be quite the same.
but even so, the movies are never as good as the books. the films tend to skip out on a number of various important things, important revelations, and other nuanced stuff. so it really kills me that people can enjoy the harry potter films without having ever read a single book. like, do they realize what the hell they're missing?!
and daniel radclyffe as harry is frickin' annoying. the boy can't act! for instance, when harry's scar starts to pain him in the books, harry is supposed to be all doubled over and excruciatingly in pain. what does radclyffe do when it comes time for the scar to be hurting him? he merely claps his hand to his forehead, rubs it, and says, "ouch."
like, wtf???!
punk.

Snarkster, now you've got me all excited
Yikes! I can hardly sit still after watching all of that! This is definitely the one summer movie I can't wait to see.
As to Emma Watson, I'm indifferent. Helena Bonham Carter, however . . . Can't wait to see her. I find her very attractive in a skeazy, slightly demented way.

Helena vs Emma
I think Helena was my Emma Watson. I remember as a young-ish lass going to see her in Room with a View and coming over all queer. I also once took my elderly great aunt to see HBC in a play and noticing that there were a lot of other girls around my age in the audience also accompanying their elderly aunts. And we all seemed to lean forward in our seats a little whenever she entered the stage. If only I knew how to photo-shop (or even what photo shop is) I'd give her picture a little milky moustache and a "Got Milk?" caption. And then I'd... Oh dear, I'm coming over all queer again, Ms Snarker.

Dot, honey. My Mama gave me 3 pearls of wisdom as I was growing up:
1. God gives usa no more than we can bear.
2. You do what you think is right.
3. If you can't look, you might as well be dead.
Guess which one I took most closely to my heart? And that's the one you should, too. And yes, Emma Watson is adorable (love those brown-eyed blondes). One day, in about 10 years I think she will be one hot woman. I hope I'm here to witness (I am old enough to be her grandmother -- yikes!)
Emma is my future wife.
Since Emma is only a year younger than me I have the immense pleasure of fawning over her without feeling like a skeeze! I think she is the only reason why I bother watching the HP films. Don't get me wrong, I love HP [heck, I'm a HP geek] but the movies always leave me a bit disappointed [actually, 1 & 2 didn't but 3 & 4 did. Maybe because Chris C. didn't direct them?]. Hopefully this new movie won't disappoint.
That reminds me..I have to reserve some tickets!
Daniel and Rupert look nice but not amazingly hot like some people think. They can't hold a candle to my dear Emma. And how good does Emma look with that hair? The girl couldn't look bad even if she tried.
lol
being only about 2 or 3 yrs
being only about 2 or 3 yrs older my crush on emma shouldn't be too skeezy right? but i cant help feeling so wrong about it. now that shes getting older im feeling like i want to just come out with it. yes thats right. i think she's adorable. dang i cant wait for this movie.
love it
i'm not that big on harry
i'm not that big on harry potter, but i love emma. she's soo pretty. i wish i'd look like that. i'm her age, and that's nice, cuz it makes me feel better about liking her *hehe*
i dunno if i'm gonna watch the new film. and if i do, i have to get the original, cuz the german voices are nothing compared to the real ones. looove her accent
Emma better as brunette?
Forget Emma Watson, and bring on Emma Thompson.
did someone say older women?
Well he-lloooo Amy.
I can wear glasses too.

I can't wait for Deathly Hallows
I've been thus far disappointed with HP & the GoF. I hope HP & OoP is better!
True glory consists in doing what deserves to be written and writing what deserves to be read.
i'm younger than her
i'm younger than her so-no-skeezy feeling :) she is so cute ::swoon::

helll-llo back at you Not Only But Also.
great avatar pic.
Dorothy,
you're not skeezy, you have an eye for up and coming beautiful women. Emma Watson is pretty and adorable at 17. And in a few yrs, I think she'll be a stunning woman. Not to mention, a young actress with experience and exposure from the HP series. She's also intelligent with both feet on the ground, which is more then I can say for a lot of adults.
Brains and beauty are intoxicating - add to that Emma's motivation, and she'll be a heart breaker for sure.
I've really liked the Harry Potter series. Daniel gets my respect for taking risks as an actor and I hope Rupert does well with character roles. He is one homely looking actor, but he's still funny and charming. And Emma, well, :-D, I'd love to see her shine in college and on the screen.
Class
These young actors exhibit so much class and I continue to be impressed not only by their work, but by the way they present themselves.
I, too, Riven...thought that Daniel Radcliffe was wise to play the part of "Alan Strang" in Equus. It is a dream role for many young actors and even if his choice to play the part may seem a bit scandalous to some...it allows many in the theatre world to have even greater respect for him (as an actor) and as you've mentioned...it shows that he is willing to "take risks."
As for Emma...she is adorable and very talented.
