"Grey's" says goodbye to one cast member while Sara Ramirez says hello to anotherYou know that Beatles song “Hello Goodbye?” Well, Grey’s Anatomy should seriously consider changing its theme song to the jaunty little number. The medical drama has been a revolving door this year, and that’s not even delving into the still-open wound of the Callica debacle. The latest cast member to be shown the door: The L Word alumnus Janina Gavankar.
Despite an earlier announcement in September of her extended stay at Seattle Grace among the new crop of interns, Janina is done. Apparently, the artist formerly known as Papi has left after two episodes.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Janina left because “the role turned out to be smaller than Gavankar had hoped (so small that I don't even recall seeing her on screen). And without a guarantee that her part would grow, the actress chose to move on.” Janina’s IMDB.com profile says she appeared as “Intern Lisa” in the last two episodes of October — “Life During Wartime” and “There’s No ‘I’ in Team.” While I tried my darndest to remember her on screen, the best I could do was this production still from the Oct. 30 episode. She might (big emphasis on might) be the intern holding her nose behind Sandra Oh, possibly as a subliminal statement about the stinkingly small role she’d been given.
With Janina and Brooke Smith out, that leaves Melissa George very much in (while simultaneously being out) as the new and probably bisexual intern Sadie. Despite earlier reports of her character’s de-gaying, TV Guide reported earlier this month that she “still fancies the occasional female.” Gosh, isn’t that how every bisexual gal likes to be described in print?
And the latest Ausiello spoiler has yet another possible clue as to where Callie (Sara Ramirez) might find solace after what is known around my house as The Great Parking Lot Blowout That Blew of 2008. Apparently, maybe, who the heck knows but it just might be Sadie. His spoiler reads: The official ABC logline for the Dec. 4 episode includes this little morsel: “Callie can't figure out if Sadie is just friendly or flirtatious.” Translation: Sadie’s next for Callie. Sure, ABC, because throwing your regular cast’s one gay character into another relationship with a brand new character after the relationship that the fans actually invested in cared about was ended shockingly without any rational reasoning sounds like a great idea. And by great, ABC, I mean stupid. SadCal? Yeah, I don’t think so. Submitted by on November 19, 2008 - 4:00pm. |

nope that isnt her.
I remeber seeing her, and the girl in the pic above isn't Janina.
Jania didn't have any lines but I remeber seeing her as on of George's new interns on his first day as a practicing resident. She's seen in the beging after the first or second commercail break laughing as George asked Intern Megan to help with something.

sadcal! lol
Whaha! I hadn't thought about that:p SadCal, brilliant! The only thing to laugh about from this article though...

I'm so done with this show...
...I can't say I care we did not get to see more of Papi.
It's stupid indeed.

Season filming...
On smaller shows where the fate may be in question, filming is often done ahead of airing. However, on big, network shows like Grey's, filming is regularly done a few weeks ahead of the airdate. Hence, Brooke Smith knew of her ouster almost a month before her final episode (though the general public only knew a week before).

ARGH!!!
It would indeed be a sad call to put them together. And whatever happened to mourning Erica? Like yaNG! mourned Burke for a lifetime, and still does.
Stupid f-in ABC people!!!!!!!
And did anyone see that s***about BAM being on air cause they were cuter than Callica? ARRGGHH!!
I'm sorry. I'm usually a (really) calm person but Brookgate really PISSES me OFF!

I love you, dorothy! seriously, love!
You are dead on: SadCal leaves Callie sad, the fans sad and Erica sad. I am so over this show, at least I won't have to watch this disaster anymore now that Erica is gone!
http://babydyke.blogspot.com/ - my take on all things lesbian
I seriously doubt there's
I seriously doubt there's going to be anything major with Callie and Sadie. There might be a bit of flirting, maybe slightly more, for the purposes of titilation/throwing the community a bone/'evidence' that Brooke dismissal had nothing to do with the gay storyline, but I don't think we're going to see Callie in another serious relationship with a woman. The de-gaying article also mentioned flirting between them that goes nowhere, so that might be what this is.
Honestly, the show is so ridiculously awful right now that I'm glad Brooke/Erica got out (even with the horrible way that came to be) and that I can go with her. The character of Sadie is shaping up to be terrible, and if she is bisexual, is also very likely heading straight for 'will shag anything that moves' and quite possibly crazy territory (seriously, Melissa George said Angelina Jolie in 'Girl, Interrupted' is an influence on her portrayal. That worries me.)
Callie
1) Callie's not gay. She's bisexual.
2) Ausiello's comment is not compelling--haven't seen anything yet (on the web--I no longer watch Grey's) to suggest that Sadie is back to being bisexual or that she and Callie will, uh, go anywhere. Plus I saw on a YouTube video comment that there had been a flirtation scene in the bar between Callie and Sadie, but that it was cut. Not sure if that's true, but didn't see the scene anywhere, and multiple people commented about that, so...
3) The scene (watched NOT on ABC) with Mark Sloan and Callie talking about her being a "once-bian" or a "twice-bian" does not bode well for Callie continuing to be an out bisexual with an actual relationship with another woman. The "twice-bian" part is, of course, slightly tantalizing since Callie was only with one other woman, and perhaps there is a second one out there, but overall, I think Grey's was gearing up to stuff her in the closet again. Or to make her "straight" "again".
LAMENESS BEYOND LAMENESS. Sign those petitions for Erica Hahn, people!
Wait...
I thought gay was an umbrella word, like queer...
yes/no?
um, no.
I'm boycotting Grey's and if
Thanks for shining a light on Gavankar's departure!
Thanks for pointing out Janina Gavankar's departure. I read about it a day or two ago. I've been watching and waiting for it. Ever since they fired Smith and watered down the gay storylines I was quite sure her part would evaporate.
Like it's been mentioned already among the comments here, spoilers say the flirtation between the Callie and Sadie characters goes nowhere and I seem to recall a spoiler that eventually sets up Sadie w/ McSteamy. Regardless, the straight audience of Grey's need not fear they will have to watch that creepy gay stuff much longer. ABC has taken care of their concerns. Callie's been turned into a sexless bisexual..oops, I mean lesbian...ahem, and Sadie will be yet another bisexual who loves men.
I've stopped watching Grey's but have been keeping an eye on the shenanigans from the wings. I wanted the satisfaction of seeing ABC do the things our community said it was doing. Not what they've been spinning in the media to make their actions appear palatable and innocent. So far so good. Actions speak louder than words.
:-(
GOT GLASSES....?
We cannot fall for this AGAIN......Or can we????? Brooke Smith was so great---if it is true, she will be a tough act to follow.

Sadcal, LOL!
While I've never known two bisexual, who were as male leaning as Callie and Sadie apparently are to hook up, not based in any reality I know.... Still, I have to say that it's so lesbian for a couple to hook up with names that are in some way alike, like Liz and Lisa, or Lara and Cara, or Callie and Sadie... LOL....
I stopped watching Grey's the moment I heard here that the next would be the last Callie and Erica episode... And I'm not watching until I hear there is a real lesbian reality check on the show!!! Silent protest!
Grammar Nazi powers: activate!
Move on folks...to Bones
Don't know how many GA's viewers are interested in Bones...I'm sure some are: Emily Deschanel anyone? I've been hooked on it since the beginning. Its not been consistently good, but apart form the season opener (dreadful English cliches...) its been interesting. And since last week when Angela, the known bisexual in the team, reunited with her college ex, Roxie, the intrigue factor has risen for me.
Last week ended with a lingering kiss and a hint of their relationship being rekindled. And what do u know - this week Roxie is back! Yay! More sweet morsels ensue, but I won't give everything away. Go watch it. Needless to say, it seems like Roxie will be around for a little while....:)
Watch this space... as they say.
btw, so glad Angela's hook up with Hodgins is over. Talk about lack of chemistry, never mind credibility.
i dont know if anyone else
Screencaps
Here are a couple of screencaps of Janina in Episode 5. I couldn't find her in the second episode though...
5x06
Here's the only pic I found in the ep. 6 (she's on the left, "extra blurry" style)... Am I the only one who thought she was supposed to have some text to say...?
L5
Last weekend (14th-16th November) I met and talked to Janina at L5 - the fifth L Word Starfury convention - in Blackpool, England. (Well actually, my American wife asked all the questions, I'm just a shy English girl so all I said was "thank you" when she signed my L Word book.) Janina said she couldn't say much about her role in Grey's Anatomy, but she did 2 episodes and didn't know if she'd be back for more. We haven't seen the last 2 episodes of Grey's yet as we are still mad about Brooke Smith being fired. Now I wish we had seen them before meeting Janina.
Janina said she would be going to London on the 18th (Tuesday) with Rachel Shelley (who plays Helena in The L Word and was also at L5) to see Leisha Hailey's band Uh Huh Her perform at Koko, so I find the timing of this news a bit odd. Still I guess that's Hollywood for you.
Janina was lovely, very down to earth, and was a great hit among the fans. As was her mum, who Janina brought with her. Someone went up to the mike (where you can ask questions during the guest talks) and asked everyone to sing "Happy Birthday" to Janina, for the 29th November. We did and she was overcome with emotion, and gladly accepted a tissue from a fan to dry her eyes. When asked what she had learnt about the lesbian community in her time on The L Word, she told us that she learned that we have so much love to give, and don't judge.
Janina's mum
Janina's mum rocked the house, as did Janina herself. I went not knowing much about her and came away a big fan.
Her auctioneering skills were also brilliant - if she ever tires of TV a career in that surely beckons!
Twitter
I don't know if you're on Twitter, but Janina is and she just sent this message:
Sounds like everyone had an incredible experience.

If Callie and Sadie are
After Last Week's Episode...
No Guilt
I'm glad Janina's out at Grey's actually because I wanted to be able to support her in her new role and couldn't after the whole Brooke Smith fiasco...so this, in addition to the fact that she might get a lead role on a new USA series, alleviates my guilt.
That said, ABC really missed a golden opportunity on this--as her tenure as Papi showed, they won't find many other actresses as experienced as delivering poorly written material well as Janina Gavankar.

Glutens for punishment...
Glutens for punishment, that's all we are...this proves it, that telesbians will pretty much watch anything with even a hint of 'girl on girl', heck I know I do...but this has got to be the lowest...i mean lower than following the exploits of Tila Tequila, lower then watching 'Gossip Girl' for subtext...but now we're going to keep watching & talking about a show that had a character come out...and then got rid of her in the next episode...!!!???...major character comes out, major character leaves next episode.
What the hell is the matter with us!? Wave a potentially..POTENTIALLY..bisexual Melissa George character in our face and we're like a donkey with a carot. We're gonna keep watching this piece of shit show, even after what they did to Brooke Smith, and even though we know they're gonna frack it up. <shakes head> Glutens...punishment.
AE Will Watch it
SadCal!
YARG! Grey's! FUcK!
Because i'm just a little kinda totally obsessed, i wrote this big long thing on the MB at ABC as to why SadCal would never work. (Not to mention that name is atrocious.) Basically because Callie never even figured out what she identified as. The whole point was that her character wsn't into women per se, she was just into Erica. If anything happens, it's gonna be because Sadie puts the moves on Callie. Callie might give in in an effort to forget about Erica and just for fun, but there's not gonna be any kind of chemistry there at all ever in life. What's gonna suck is that if they put them together it's gonna be like 'here lesbians here's you a couple now STFD and STFU.' Because it's run by straight people they don't understand that the dynamic of lesbian relatioships are the same as hetero relationships; we have slutfests, and we have committed relationships; they're about to throw us a slutfest because they couldn't handle showing an adult relationship between two women.
Oh and that shit about 'our lesbians are cuter' with the ABC guy? THAT was pretty horrible. Most
I'll most likely be snatching it from a torrent as soon as it goes off. Aaaaarrg.
I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.
go janina shes so cute !
go janina shes so cute ! sad she gotta a shitty role like pappi
n then a raw deal on greys
sum ppl say dat u dnt no wat u hv until u lose it but its not like dat. U always knw wat u hv u just nvr thot u wud loose it
Good For Her.
If I was promised a meatier role and I only ended up in barely 1 scene an episode with no lines, I'd quit, too.
The whole Brooke Smith firing fiasco sucked and was brazenly unfair considering I feel Brooke Smith carried the Callica pairing. Gay panic Callie got old super fast. I'm one of the few here who thought Callica had no chemistry, but ,hopefully, the oft quoted leaves speech will give Brooke Smith at least an Emmy nom if not a win. It was really beautiful.
As for Callie and Sadie, if Callie were my friend I'd look at her crazy if she started dating Sadie. Sadie, to quote 30 Rock, is "Crazy Putty".
