GQ goes barely legal with Hayden and Rihanna

Look, I don’t consider myself a prude. Sure, I sometimes furiously fly my feminist flag, but otherwise I’m pretty hard to shock. And I’m the last person on the planet to tell consenting adults what they should and shouldn’t do in the privacy of their own homes. Still, when I saw these pictures of Rihanna and Hayden Panettiere for the latest issue of GQ, my only thought was “Ewww.” Like, seriously, ewww.

Now, it’s not just the poses that give me pause. It’s the context. Ah, isn’t it always the context? Let’s start with Rihanna. The magazine took the 19-year-old pop star and bent her over the knee of 30-year-old fellow singer Robin Thicke, whose hand is mid-spank. Nope, nothing creepy about that. And nothing creepy about these either.

And then there is Hayden. Cute, blonde, just-turned-18 Hayden was named Obsession of the Year by GQ. Which means that up until her birthday in August, she was the magazine’s underage obsession of the year. But even if I gave them the benefit of the doubt for holding off until she was legal, I can’t give them a pass for posing her in with such Lolita-like lasciviousness. And, again, it’s all about the context. A young girl in a see-through nightie holding a teddy bear with teen-idol posters on the wall? This is this the kind of women the men at GQ obsess about?

What bothers me the most is these shots are for GQ, a magazine for men and — if the title is to be believed — gentlemen at that. So this isn’t a magazine for teenagers or young men like Maxim and FHM. It’s for full-grown adults who should know better than to fantasize about teenage girls. And they should definitely know better than to so grossly objectify and infantilize them. And I’m not the only one who thinks it’s gross. This is Gentlemen's Quarterly, after all, not Barely Legal. So, what do you think? Am I being a prude? Or do you share my ewww?

Ewwww too!

I concur. Another example of exploitation. I saw an interview with Hayden about her turning 18 and something about her hoping that she doesn't fall into the sights of the paparazzi etc after she turns. Well, it seems she has gone along with it. I wonder if that's the prevailing feeling in Hollywierd that in order to get ahead women have to allow themselves to be portrayed in this way. You don't see young male stars going through the same exploitations. I'm sorry to see it and I'm not a rah rah feminist type. But I liked Hayden and her 'wholesome' portrayal. Well, I guess it's just acting after all. Silly me!

double ewww

The rihanna pictures disgust me a little less because she doesn't look like she's 13 in them.  But they are still gross.  and bad pictures--they look like 18-year-olds posed them for myspace pictures.  they're sort of grainy, and posed in front of a plain white wall.  i know, not the point, but I don't get what is appealing about them at all.

As for the lolita pictures, eww eww eww!  I am so motherf*&(%^& sick of seeing young women posed like little girls in a sexual way.  It's a step up from child porn, and it sends the message that this is what is appropriate for grown men to fantasize about and/or pursue.  GQ, the photographer, and the creative directer should be ashamed.  Also, though, where are her parents?  Her agent?  who is telling her, "Sure, honey, dress up like you're underage for this jack-off photo spread for grown men?"  How can all these people at GQ and in her life (professionally and personally) be convinced that this is just what has to be done to succeed?

egret's picture

Eeew!

You're not the only one. Yuck. Whatever floats your boat to that sort of posing, at least the first sort, but definitely not with professionals who are being posed like that as some stupid joking wink-wink way to play into the fantasies of the lowest common male denominator. Bleah!
Guardiyan's picture

Wow GQ

So, not only are we exploiting women. Now we've moved on to posing them with what appears to be a dominating, older male cohort. And having them wear sheer nighties on sets that over emphasis their young age.

Yes GQ, you've finally hit the mark. But next time gents, try to have Robin pose with Rhianna on a leash, or perhaps with marionette strings. Oh and fella's while you're waiting for Dakota Fanning to turn 18 years and 24 hours old for her centerfold shoot. Why not get Hayden in nothing but a "Kiss the Cook" apron in front of an easy bake oven with her friends Barbie and Rainbowbrite. Sound good? K, Thanks.

Wow, nice rant. I agree with you one hundred percent.

Omega II's picture

Definately on the eww side.

Rianna and Hayden are to close to "the play age" for these pics. If they were 24 or older I could see it as just a bit of fantasy fun, but 18?

"Bad jokes are us, ur me."

evolve's picture

Agreed.

I can't really say much more than what both you and other AfterEllen women have said.  On a side note - have you seen Rihanna's new video?  I couldn't watch it!  She is in her bra and underwear most of the time - its just unbelievable how these young girls are being portrayed.  The media-types and pop stars are making young girls grow up way too fast.

While its still sorta creepy

It makes me hopeful about race issues. I live in New England currently, and while magazines which contain pictures of black people and magazines which contain pictures of white people are sold side-by-side, there aren't a lot of magazines with shots of black and white people placed in even the same section, let alone in the same picture. Rihanna and Robin Thicke are both very open about reaching out to fans of all races and tastes, so I think its very fitting that they did a shoot together.

On the plus side, Robin Thicke is married to a very fine woman. I don't think Rihanna holds a candle to her.

Cetienne's picture

But wait...

...You're missing a very vital factor. If you're going to bring up the race factor, then you must look at the power dynamics in play. You have a white man with a raised hand and a black female in a most submisive pose. How is that appealing? Are going with bad press is press nonetheless? I don't buy it.
shadowdrose's picture

Yes, I'm a feminist...

Well, actually, the entire thing makes sense if you look at our cultural expectations of women. Our culture sexualizes young girls and women, ie. JonBenet Ramsey. It's part of our culture to make women look younger and then to sexualize and objectify them. This goes along with the idea that women should be hairless and shave their genital area and underarms (pre-pubescent girls don't have hair there, and therefore it's "sexy"). It's completely ridiculous. It's one thing for them to be over 18 and doing this; it's another for them to be put in positions/clothing to illustrate their childlike features and submission, something that has been a fantasy of men and an "acceptable" form of femininity for women for a long time.

I'm the same age as Rhianna

I'm the same age as Rhianna and just a year older than Hayden and I feel dirty looking at these pictures...imagine what someone my dad's age would (/should) feel. And that they're overplaying the age thing really increases the creep factor.

And re the consent thing how much say do you think they really have when faced with the threats to their careers, and their handlers/managers' (/parents'?) incomes?

(the best is in parenthesis)

eeeeeew

was the first thing that came outta my mouth. Blergh. Especially on the hayden-pics! I've always thought she just looks so young, like a little girl. Having the hots for her has always totally grossed me out. So so wrong.

Rihanna on the other hand looks much more mature, though thicke is kinda icky, so ewww for that. Mhm.

Don't dream it, be it.

surfsup17's picture

BIG vs small

I've always told my (teenaged) female students to open their eyes about what society tells them about their clothing. Girls are supposed to wear as little as possible and show as much of their bodies as they can get away with, not to mention wear shoes that will eventually ruin their feet. The guys, on the other hand, wear BIG clothes. Pants hanging off, huge hooded sweatshirts, big clompy boots- oversized everything. The guys are totally hidden (protected), and the girls are completely exposed and vulnerable. They still don't get it, but at least it's been said.
pecola's picture

um...

You're not being a prude. I feel kinda dirty just looking at those pictures...

Important Fact!

I have to concur with all of the above comments, however, I'm amazed that this very important fact was not mentioned - Robin Thicke is not only almost twice Rihanna's age but he is M-A-R-R-I-E-D!! and happily so, if we are to believe the tabloids.

So not only are we (GQ) selling barely legal porn (if there's such a thing) but we are also advocating that happily married men should be quite ok with posing with half-your-age-barely legal girls.

I'm disappointed with both girls but moreso with Hayden and I think that's because she's in TV/Movies whereas Rihanna is a singer (and it's more common for this type of thing in vidoes and what not).

In as much as artists think $$$, it's high time that they think $$$ + Common Decency = Good Sense and Sound Character.  It should never be just about the money.  Sound cliche, but it's not that difficult, it really isn't.

Crimson013's picture

This makes me so angry...

why do we even bother struggling for equality in all things? - when some fool of a girl is just going to come along every now and then and pose for photographs that not only objectify women but also allow some sick male pervert to walk away with the belief that their fetish for little girls is in any way acceptable, really, I despair.

hmm..

well i'm with everyone above on the gross factor. i also see something else happening here...i can't help but feel that GQ also unconciously (or not, i'll give them some slack for a minute) played on certain racial stereotypes of submissive black women. if they were really trying to make a statement, they could have switched Robin and Rihanna's roles and she could have been puppeteering him or whatever. But as I write that it seems creepy still because I'm sure they would make that into a warped sexual fantasy. Ahh. "What a world, what a woooorlld."

BeecaBee's picture

Did GQ cross the line with age and race explotation?

I was thinking the same thing, I understand he is considered an R&B singer and what not, but it doesnt make him black, and for him to be in a domineering role like in these pictures adds a mortifying sexuality to a white male dominating a submissive black woman.

Ugh, the creepy factor is making my skin crawl. Remember the countdown to when the Olsen twins turned legal? Ugh. I think I just threw up in my mouth. Barely legal doesnt add a hint of sexy at all in my opinion, it adds a hint of ICK FACTOR!

While GQ (and Maxim and the other guy mags) have a certain ick factor.... I will say that the ONE positive side is that Hayden is about as close to a normal girl as you get in hollywood.. she isnt stick thin, she doesnt have rock hard abs, she's normal! And she is their obession of the year? That is a least there is that one teeny tiny bright spot.

Hula's picture

Definite ew.

What bothers me so much about the Hayden pictures is not so much her actual age, but the fact that most people know her from Heroes where her character is about 15 or 16. That just makes it so much worse.
aberracja's picture

Not that I'm defending

Not that I'm defending these photos or saying it's right, but this is Terry Richardson we're talking about here. As a photographer he's known for his pervy shots ;)

Nevertheless, the spanking and faux-Lolita ones are plain rank.

water-fly's picture

This is totally upseting

I dont like the pictures by all the already mentioned reasons, but i also think that we should criticize not only the magazine or the photographer, but also both Rihanna and Hyden for offering themselves to pose in such a lascivious manner. Is that the image they want to sell to the thousands of young people that are going to buy the magazine? Seriously, 2 centuries of feminism, fighting to be respected as human beings, for this? This is an insult to all the women who have given their lives so that today we can be 'almost' treated in the same way than our male counterparts. Sorry if my view is too extremist, but i dont know, that picture with Rihanna about to be given a smack just makes me angry. I live in a European country where around 100 women are killed every year by their husbands as a consequence of domestic violence, and this is not the kind of pictures i like to see, cause although they might seem 'funny', 'provocative', 'erotic' or however you wanna call them, they are not. They're spreading a very dangerous message. C'mon! you can beat your girlfriend/wife..it's only a smack, a slap or whatever..it is funny! No, it is not funny. It is offensive.

aberracja's picture

I don't think this is about domestic violence. Something more along the lines of a daddy giving his naughty daughter a smack ;)

Icke

That Thicke character is just uber creepy. He looks like the kind of guy who'd be staring back at the video camera the whole time he was secretly recording a sex tape. And then acting all innocent and shocked once it was 'leaked' to the internets.

Or not. Maybe he's just genuinely uncomfortable with the whole photo shoot and looks all pervy because he wants to get out of there.

jackedup77's picture

Maybe I'm just jaded

The pictures got an eye-roll out of me. The pictures are cheesy; poor quality. I thought GQ had a higher quality of photography (though I haven't flipped through one in a while). I can't believe even one editor, let alone a team of people, saw these pictures and thought they were fit to print.

Robin just looks awkward; like he knows this is ridiculous.

The only people really responsible for this crap are Hayden and Rhianna. They decided this was a good idea. I'm really over the objectification cry. Apparently, these women think their self-worth is proceeded by dollar signs.

The bar has been raised. Britney Spears can run around like a moron and still put out a #1 hit. That's why they think it's fine to behave this way.

I don't think grown men know any better. If you really want to be disgusted; just think that the adult entertainment industry makes billions ever year. Guess how old the girls are getting into that industry...

hallyb's picture

Total Prude... I hope

I think these pictures are pretty tame compared to some of the other stuff I've seen these magazines run. And I don't see why their ages should have anything to do with it. If we're going to tell people that they are adults when they reach 18, then we've got to let them make their own decisions and respect it. It's ridiculous to say you're an adult, but just barely, so stop doing adult things.

On this very website we've seen pictures of female celebirities that are way more risque than what GQ ran. And some of women at least close in age. And the comments that attached to those images from both the posters and readers (I include myself here) range from "swoon" to "drool" to some stuff that's downright inappropriate. Unfortunately, I suspect the problem dorothy snarker has here is that it's men (or, at least, a men's magazine) for whom they're posing, and men who are expressing their "obsession." Everyone has fantasies, that's what showbiz is. Why is it objectfication if it's hetero and not the other way around? Way too much man-hating vibe running through this post.

Touche

Very nicely put.

Although, I must admit that I personally am disturbed by the pictures of Hayden as I only know her as the little girl from Heroes. I thought she was younger than 18...

BeecaBee's picture

Man-hating?

I dont see how any of this is about man hating. I see it as people thinking that the pics are gross.

I know a female made a comment about Hayden and Ali Larter or Kristen Belle hooking up on Hereos in the WLT blog and other people jumped about how young Hayden is.

I truly dont think it has anything to do with man hating, as it does with being uncomfortable with the sexualization of the themes of these pics.

Omega II's picture

Adult, yes. Appropriate yet, no.

Become a legal adult and then doing something adult isn't the point for me, I agree there, it is the fact the Hayden is playing up the young factor too much. Her play thing the naughty schoolgirl at 18 in this setting is where the ewww factors in.

"Bad jokes are us, ur me."

miss chatelaine's picture

It's okay...

I kind of agree with you. but not about the complete man-hating thing. The Hayden pictures are a little scary, but what was Britney doing at her age? The plaited hair, the knotted white shirt and plaid skirt certainly wasn't much different.

I'm personally not very fond of people getting down to their skivvies to pose in magazines, (though hypocritically I can appreciate jennifer lopez in Stuff). It's not just the feminist in me, it's the idea that women, and men too, are selling their bodies, themselves rather than just their image as actors/singers. What happened to the self-respecting women who know they're more than bodies? Sure, bodies are a part of image and acting, but there's no reason to overdo it. And I think we can fully appreciate women with clothes on as well as without.

There was this great piece in the Guardian a couple months back about women needing to bare all - http://film.guardian.co.uk/features/featurepages/0,,2163280,00.html
"I think what I find so incredibly discomfiting about these pictures is their suggestion that, no matter how talented a woman is, how many plaudits she has received, how intelligent her reputation, how garlanded she has been for depicting one of the most talented writers of the last century while sporting a huge prosthetic conk on her noggin, at the end of the day, if she wants to stay in the public eye, if she wants the magazine covers and the leading roles, she has to be willing to reduce herself to tits and arse."

half agree

the rihanna pictures are kinda "ew" because you can tell it was just the photographer being a perv.

And the hayden pictures...well let's just say "eww" was not the first word that came to mind, but that's okay because she's like the same age as me. The only thing sort of gross is that she posed for an "older gentleman's" magazine. However she is an adult, she's 18 and rihanna is 19...there's nothing wrong with them choosing pose for a men's magazine. It's their decision. rihanna's outfit isnt even that bad....it's just the awkward posing with robin thicke that's gross.

semixreformed's picture

Robin Thicke...

I like him as an artist. I also like how much he loves his wife. Why does a happily married man need to have a 19 year old bent over his knee?
kate_ruth's picture

The second Hayden pic is

The second Hayden pic is the worst in my opinion and I think it a shame that young women are being sexuallised so soon. It was disgusting that some websites were counting down until Mary-Kate and Ashley were legal. And some of the pictures with Britney have been very lolita like.

I think it is one thing to pose provoctavely there is quite another when images of childhood are added to that pose and picture
