Gorgeous "Golden Age" trailerMy word, how gorgeous does Elizabeth: The Golden Age look? So gorgeous, practically every frame from the trailer could be blown up and used as wallpaper.
The long-in-the-coming follow-up to 1998’s Elizabeth, the movie that put Cate Blanchett on the international and Oscar radar, brings the Virgin Queen back to cinematic glory as the story picks up with her in full reign. Cate, Geoffrey Rush and director Shekhar Kapur return for this most unlikely yet somehow most natural of sequels. Joining them are Clive Owen (as Sir Walter Raleigh), Samantha Morton (as Mary Stuart) and newcomer Abbie Cornish (as Elizabeth’s lady-in-waiting).
But, as it should be, the magnificent Cate is the brilliant star around which the lesser planets revolve. How magnificent? Cate in a suit of armor. Cate screaming that she can “command the wind.” Cate being bathed by her lady-in-waiting. I’m feeling tingly all over.
The historical drama finds Queen Elizabeth I facing treachery from both home and abroad as the Spanish King Philip II and his armada threaten to restore England to Catholicism. Luckily for her, this time they do expect the Spanish Inquisition. (Ah, Monty Python puns — they never get old.) After seeing both the newest trailer and the previously released international trailer (above), I am ready for a serious throwdown between Cate and Jodie Foster this coming Oscar season. What? If the presidential race can begin 494 days early, what’s a couple months’ jump start for the Academy Awards? Submitted by on June 28, 2007 - 10:14am. |

all i can say is....
I am on such sensory
I am on such sensory overload I can't even think. But first thoughts: Cate Blanchett is incredibly hot, this looks more like a great original movie than a sequel, and I don't even care that they are going to be playing fast and loose with actual history. It looks fantastic.
Agree!
lesbian without borders
Oh hell yes ...
Oh. My. God.
a sequel that doesn't suck
I have to say I did get a bit tingly -- Cate Blanchett is such a powerful force that I can't envision anyone else playing this Queen.
On a nerdy note, any idea how historically accurate the story is? Are there any good biographies on Elizabeth 1?
Wow.
She wuz robbed...
Jodie or Cate
I'm a fan of both actresses so I do watch their films no matter what they are, whether they're good or bad. I'm dying to see both movies and if Jodie and Cate do get Oscar nods next year, I'm going to slap myself silly and root for Jodie. I love Cate but Jodie is still the one. :)
Personal History is Shaky
Well the first Elizabeth contain a number of inaccuracies, Wikipedia has a list. Mostly, things about betrayals and ages of some of the characters. So I imagine, that this movie will also hold some of those inaccuracies.
Oh, It Probably Will...
but what historical film hasn't been inaccurate? It's not a documentary. Hopefully, it will spark enough interest for people, who aren't renaissance faire geeks, to go check out the details.

of COURSE they were!"-Claire Stansfield (Alti)
Should have won the first time...
reminded me of the recent Elizabeth 1 on TV with Helen Mirren
Helen Mirren won a Golden Globe for her performance in that movie. It was riveting. Helen was just stunning in it. Jeremy Irons played the Geoffrey Rush role.
This one looks really good too. Cate is classy. I just wish there were more roles like this for women. Strong powerful women.
Cate Blanchett
I like excellent film directing and the promos for the Golden Age seem to show the directors talent; so I can't wait for it, I guess.
I've seen the first movie in
I love Elizabeth
It was a beautiful film - with all the right ingredients - great set, great costumes, powerful performance all around. I watched it too many times on DVD and I still quote lines from the movie from time to time.
Can't wait for The Golden Age.
Great news
Awesome
I second that! I am so
I second that!
I am so seeing this movie when it comes out!
interesting subtext
Dark swarthy religious fanatics threatening to swarm from overseas to impose their fundamentalism on us? Hmm. Hollywood really isn't subtle in picking and choosing its themes, is it?
And to whoever asked whether it's historically accurate, I'm pretty sure it won't be. The last movie mixed up events that happened when she was very young and very old and made it seem like it all happened in the course of a few weeks. For instance, the closing speech ("I may have the mind and body of a feeble woman...") was actually delivered when she was a very old woman and is meant to have been less an indictment of her gender and more to do with her warning her near-mutinous lieutenants not to push their luck. Also, "Good Queen Bess" was rather fond of killing Catholics, Scots, Irish and all foreigners and while many English revere her as having given birth to the English Renaissance, she's viewed by many of England's neighbours as a vicious war mongering criminal (at the very least, she sanctioned piracy by her navy; that was Raleigh's main task - to steal gold from Spanish ships) with a tenuous claim to the English throne (her father being Henry VIII, there were a few messy lineage issues to mop up, which drove her more violent instncts towards her nearest relatives). But I guess historical accuracy just depends on which end of the sword you were at.
That said, you won't find a bigger Cate Blanchett or Geoffrey Rush fan than me so I'll be there on opening weekend!
Not Only But Also

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
that's all i can say. well, that, and i've waited 10 years for this! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!
