Gillian Anderson talks back, drops hints

Gillian Anderson is speaking out directly to fans and critics through her official website, on the topic of her love-hate relationship with The X-Files. What’s more, the actress formerly known as Special Agent Dana Scully might just have broken news of her own about a possible sequel to the first film. In a post on her site, Gillian attempted to right some perceived wrongs that have been printed recently about whether or not she enjoyed working on the hit sci-fi show.

“Did I hate it? At times yes.

Did I love it? At times yes.

Did I regret it or do I regret it now? Not for a second.

Did David and I hate each other? At times yes like any brother and sister, husband and wife, co-worker and co-worker forced to spend that much time together under such strenuous circumstances.

Do we hate each other now? Not in the least.”

As posted here last week, Anderson made several unvarnished comments recently, about her time on The X-Files and her disdain for television in general, to the U.K. newspaper the Telegraph. Gillian didn’t refute her hatred of TV (and she kind of makes her disdain of blogs pretty clear with her headline: THIS IS A BLOG – IT IS THE FIRST AND THE LAST). But she did seek to explain why she sometimes comes off as “moody/abrupt/rude/dismissive” in her interviews, saying that her words and actions are contorted to fit the “snippy mood of the journalist.”

Oh, journalists and their snippy ways. As some commenters pointed out in the previous post, silly us for believing everything we read. But in defense of that evil catchall known as “the media,” I’d like to point out that there is a big difference between reading something in a major newspaper like the Telegraph and reading something on an inexplicably popular blog that, say, rhymes with Gomez Milton. Certainly, anything and everything should be read with a critical eye. But not believing anything you read is about as practical as believing everything you read. Right, end of lecture … back to gossip.

To me, the most interesting part of this post is not her displeasure with her media image or her defensiveness about her new film (Straightheads has been getting scathing reviews), but her apparent spilling of the beans about an X-Files sequel. Gillian revealed in the same post that she will team up with David Duchovny again for a film. Seriously, how else can you read her own words (all set in the future, not past tense)?

“Do I imagine that when we do the film together we won’t hate each other for a few hours during the filming? No. We will. Vehemently. As David waits patiently, again and again for the hair dryer to calm my frizzy hair between takes so it matches the beginning of the scene … he will undoubtedly be thinking ‘what the hell was I thinking agreeing to shoot with her f—— frizzy hair again?’

But we will also love each other and laugh with each other and pull pranks on each other and bug each other like we did for nine years.”

As much as I loved The X-Files, the movie marked the beginning of the end of my interest in the series. I stopped watching shortly afterward and only tuned back in to catch wishful-shipper-thinking moments between agents Scully and Reyes (played by that dishy actress Annabeth Gish). So as big as this could be, I’m having my own love-hate relationship with the news.

Do I think the movie will happen? Who knows.

Do I think I’ll watch the movie? Who knows.

Do I think Gillian has been fairly represented in the media? The truth is out there.
