Gillian Anderson prepares for her “Masterpiece”

Scully is hosting the venerable PBS series Masterpiece Theatre? Someone call Mulder; there has to be paranormal activity at work here. Gillian Anderson has signed on as one of the new hosts for the upcoming season of the newly revamped PBS mainstay. Yes, I said one of the new hosts, because the popular series will now be served three ways: Masterpiece Classic, Masterpiece Mystery! and Masterpiece Contemporary. Gillian will host Masterpiece Classic, which will feature period pieces and run January to May. The other flavors will run summer and fall, respectively. Those hosts will be announced next year.

At first glance, Gillian’s new gig might elicit a “bahwah?” But when given a couple seconds to sink in, it actually makes perfect sense. Gillian is no stranger to the Masterpiece audience. In January 2006, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Lady Dedlock in the critically acclaimed BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Bleak House.

And she is no stranger to costume dramas, having starred as Lily Bart in the 2000 adaptation of Edith Wharton’s House of Mirth. And, heck, she isn’t even a stranger to England, since she lives in London. All in all, it’s kind of — well — genius.

Bringing in the X-Files star is a move toward attracting a younger, possibly hipper, audience. She is a marked departure from the show’s two previous hosts, the legendary Alistair Cooke (1971–1992) and former New York Times columnist Russell Baker (1992–2004). As much as I loved the distinguished and urbane Mr. Cooke, I will say that Gillian is by far the hottest host in the show’s 37-year history.

Program executive producer Rebecca Eaton told The New York Times that longtime fans shouldn’t worry that the changes to the show’s packaging and scheduling will have an effect on its content. “We’re not tarting it up or dumbing it down. We’re making it as easy as possible to find and get into the programs,” she said. True enough. People have called Gillian many things over the years, but I doubt “tart” and “dumb” have ever been lobbed her way.

Up first for Anderson’s new Classic season will be Persuasion, beginning Jan. 13. The presentation is part of a series called The Complete Jane Austen — this is the marathon globalgrrl gleefully blogged about in November. The series represents the first time all of the author’s books will be shown together on television. OK, sorry: Dana Scully and Jane Austen? It’s like the weirdest, best femslash ever.

The new Masterpiece will do away with old intro’s book-filled study and will go instead with a simple studio. Also gone will be most of the familiar refrains of Jean-Joseph Mouret’s brass fanfare “Rondeau.” According to the Times, only snippets will be used in the opening. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Add an attractive actress, great. Do away with the stuffy library, fine. But get rid of those signature horns? Sacrilege! I grew up in a PBS/NPR family. That’s what we did on Sunday nights. But I will try to adjust. Just as long as they don’t use techno. Technopiece Theatre — could you imagine? Shudder.

Droooooool

I love Gillian Anderson so very, very much.  I think she was one of my very first crushes, which partially explains my obsessive X-Files watching as a kid.  I'm totally excited for the new gig too, because she's perfect for it.  For some reason it reminds me of the scene in Tristram Shandy where she comes to do her part and everyone's freaking out and falling all over themselves.  Also, I can't believe the first thing they're showing is Persuasion, because that means, not only do I get to see Gillian Anderson, but also Sally Hawkins.  Lucky me :)

She is perfect!

Not only can Gillian rock a period costume, she has also relearned how to speak with a charming British accent (unlike Madonna, Gillian can always blame it on her childhood in jolly ol' England). The new voice--seeeexy.

Her Lady Dedlock nearly killed me...I couldn't get her out of my mind. <wanders off to dig out Bleak House DVDs...>

Ahhh, Gillian!!  The lady

Ahhh, Gillian!!  The lady who made me realise I was gay!  Love her still and she will always hold a special place in my heart!

Yay, back to red!

I simply do not care what she does as long as she'll stay a redhead forever.

She looks great!

Oh, I also wouldn't mind her going back to that bob haircut either. She look a bit like Julianne Moore with that long red hair...Nothing wrong with that, I've just missed the classical Scully-look.

I guess this means that the shooting of XF2 has begun. I am so excited to see Gillian as Scully again! The rumours about Julianne Moore replacing Anderson as Scully seems to have been false. But how about Julianne Moore replacing David Duchovny as Mulder. Now that sounds like an interesting idea to me. Am I obsessed with redheads?

Does Anyone Remember

That rumor that was floating around in the early 90s? About Gillian allegedly having a brief affair with a woman who also played an icononic FBI agent on the screen (hint: Clarice, Silence of the Lambs)? I can't remember the details at all, can anyone fill me in on the rumor?

Patricia Cornwell?

Ooops, wrong rumor. Or was that a rumor? I can't keep up.

Clarice & Scully

Don't know about a rumour but I remember that probably the best piece of femslash fanfic I ever read was a Scully/Starling crossover by Sharon Bowers.  If you can find it online (have a look at the Pink Rabbit Consortium), it's well worth the read.  It's called Phases of Fire.

Ooh, I even found a link http://www.altfic.com/subtextfic/xfiles/bowers/phasesoffire1.htm

phases of fire is FANTASTIC. great read!

I miss the days when Scully was on TV every week :(

I'm going to see that movie at least five times, even if it's absolutely terrible (and by terrible, I mean Scully making out with Mulder the whole time).

Phases of Fire is brilliant - definitely worth a read. It took a couple of days to read (around my hectic schedule) but I kept going back to it at every chance. Sharon Bowers is both clever and articulate - up there with Joss Whedon in my mind. I love the blink-and-you'll-miss-them references to X-Files episodes and the Silence of the Lambs:)

Diana Rigg

Didn't Diana Rigg host or am I confusing Masterpiece Theater with Mystery?

No matter, I think Gillian will do a spectacular job.

Mystery

Yep, Dame Diana was the host of Mystery!

Thanks

Thanks, I googled and learned that Dame Enid Diana Elizabeth Rigg is my favorite host's full name. Who knew ... Enid!

GA

Gillian Anderson is my secret celebrity crush. I once said that I'd crawl across a floor strewn with broken glass for a chance to look up her skirt, but then the fever broke and I was stricken with hysterical blindness for three days. Everything after that is either blank or hazy, but I'm told that I spoke perfect Portuguese, which compounded the difficulty in caring for me. Fortunately the dog and I had forged a synaptic link and he was able to know when my astronaut diaper needed to be changed. Unfortunately he hadn't evolved an opposable thumb and I ended up with a nasty rash. It's better now.
Anyway, go Gillian! Kick some masterpiece ass!

And jennifer strikes again…I love it when she goes off on these hilarious ramblings :)

totally not a shocker

i'm totally an anglo/x-phile and i've been watching all her dickensian/wharton/period piece goodness for a while.  (i'm a little backslash happy this morning, it seems.)

she was an amazing lady dedlock from the very first scene, something to the effect of "it's raining...and i am bored to death of it...bored to death of you...bored to death of this house...bored to death of myself"

i still quote that line in times of deepest ennui or total silliness

yay gillian!

angel winters's picture

hmmm..

I like her as an actress and because she usually makes good choices...say what you will but she has been able to pull off some roles half the Hollywood starlets wouldn't be able to spell the name of let alone act in.
LostSoul's picture

Ahh, Gillian...

She has always done things her own way; and this is just another example.

I wish her all the best...

Gillian...Sigh.

PS. You're so right, Dorothy...They CAN'T change the theme!  They just can't!!!

<3 her

If I had PBS, I would watch this for Gillian Anderson... watch her hosting duties, then probably put the TV on mute, but still. I adore Gillian Anderson and am counting down the days until the new X-Files movie.

If I'm borrowing your icon, I'd be happy to give you credit, just let me know :)

Not feeling it...

I recorded MPT and just got around to watching it. Gillian isn't doing much for me in the intro--too cold, and the set is downright sterile. Also, I miss Rondeau and the dusty books...:(
