“Get Smart” gets silly

Hey, want to watch something silly? Sure you do; who doesn’t? Come on, it’s Friday; what else are you going to do — work? The new trailer for Get Smart was released this week, and it’s a veritable hodgepodge of silliness, courtesy Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway.

Ah, the simple, fail-safe humor of people running into walls. Works every single time. Anyone familiar with the original 1960s small-screen show should know the film’s premise already. The good agents of CONTROL are fighting the evil forces of KAOS.

Leading the good fight are Steve as the hapless Maxwell Smart and Anne as his cool, kicky partner Agent 99. Hmm, flip that first “9” around and this could be a whole different kind of movie. You know, sort of like this.

The trailer reminds me a of a mashup of The Pink Panther, Austin Powers and Mission: Impossible. But what I really want to talk about are the many outfits of Anne.

Catholic schoolgirl Anne:

Dancing With the Stars Anne:

Action-hero Anne:

Cleopatra Anne:

So, which is your favorite? I’m partial to Catholic schoolgirl Anne. But then, girls in ties are kind of my thing. And, oh yeah, what do you think of the trailer? Good silly, or just silly silly? Or, this being a Friday, is there even a difference?

And one more thing, did they just hire actors from NBC shows for this film or what? Steve from The Office, Masi Oka from Heroes and Nate Torrence from Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Now if Tina Fey pops up, too, I am so there.

Tough choice!

I'd say it's a toss-up between Anne Agent 99 in her under things and Anne Agent 99 in the leather jacket looking kinda dangerous and moody (were those even choices?). Now, if you'd included a picture of her wearing flannel jim-jams with pockets, it would be a totally different story! :D

fave

Action hero Anne for me please. Though I must say that 1st one of her in front of the window w/o a label is rather nice.

I agree w/gypsywee

I'm torn between Lingerie-Model Anne and Leather-Clad Anne...  sexy and dangerous.  Mmmm.  Looks like Get Smart might be worth a gander.

Hmmmz

I thought I saw a wonderful spark in Steve Carell in "Little Miss Sunshine", but his recent choice of roles ("Dan in real life", "Get Smart") somehow cast doubts on that. Not that there's anything wrong with playing a messy Dad and a comic agent, but I feel these roles are just not bringing out all that he's got.

As for Anne Hathaway, she has always been a curious case for me. Her Princess performance was quite bland. She's got an interesting - though not so significant - break with "...Devil ...Prada", and then turned to questionable roles again.

I mean no offence to fans of both Carell and Hathaway :P Just being overtly critically silly on a Friday night.

Looks "good silly" to me

Then again, I like Leslie Nielsen movies, so what do I know?

I do like the fact that they seem to have updated the original concept without screwing it up, OMG. I liked the original when I was a kidlet, and if they've kept the humour without tipping over into too much stupidity and left out the sexist crap, then I'm there.

Also, you know, Anne Hathaway. I'll take the CSG and action!Anne. Thank you.
