Fox makes "Dollhouse" sit out sweeps

Well, crap. After reassuring fans that it would air all 13 second season episodes, Fox has decided to bench Dollhouse for all of November during the all-important sweeps month. The Eliza Dushku/Joss Whedon collaboration will then return with back-to-back episodes Fridays in December.

That’s quite a body blow to the series. Baring a ratings miracle, this means for all intents and purposes that the series will end for good after that 13th episode. Pulling the show for sweeps is a big deal and shows a total lack of confidence in its ability to bring in viewers. It will replace the show with reruns of House and Bones.

The thing that makes this news especially bittersweet is that the series was just getting good — really, really good. Last week’s episode, “Belle Chose,” was the best of the second season. And judging by early reviews, this Friday’s installment “Belonging” is even better.

The episode revolves around Sierra (played by the lovely Dichen Lachman) and gives us more of her backstory and the sad circumstances that led her to the Dollhouse. We already got a glimpse of Sierra’s troubled past last season. Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune calls the episode “one of the most emotionally compelling hours the show has ever done.”

Well, we’d better enjoy that hour because we won’t see another fresh Dollhouse after that for 1,008 hours. The series will return with back-to-back shows Dec. 4, 11 and 18. We won’t see Summer Glau make her appearance on the show until its first episode back. No word yet on when the final three episodes would air after that.

If it’s any consolation, the terrible lead-ins Brothers and ‘Til Death will also be benched for sweeps. Of course why those two comedies (using that term in the loosest sense possible) were ever paired with Dollhouse is another question. Hey, Fox, you have a great show to pair Dollhouse with, it’s called Fringe. And don’t even get me started on the show’s banishment to Friday nights in the first place.

So what, if anything, can be done to unseal Dollhouse’s fate? Probably not too much. Bottom line, the show needs more viewers. Though, if it would help I would happily go along with renaming the series NCIS: Dollhouse. What? That show is doing gangbusters.

So what do you think? Is Dollhouse doomed? Was it ever even given a fair shot in the first place? Discuss while I go searching for Topher’s magic chair to forget I ever heard this news in the first place.

DH fans feel our pain

as Sarah Connor Chronicles fans, who also got frakked by FOX with no promotion, a move to Fridays, no lead in and a cancellation just when the show was airing truly excellent episodes. I never really watched DH but I can say that I predicted what is now almost a sure cancellation for DH ever since I heard it got renewed over SCC and it was still going to be on Fridays. The ratings for DH this season have also been lower than SCC's ever were. Well, at least Joss Whedon said in an interview that he can write a decent finale for DH since he's pretty sure the end is coming, unlike the SCC fans who will forever be left with the mother of all cliffhangers. Groan. FOX can kiss my frakking ass! :pp

agree

I watched both shows, and I really miss TSCC.  And to be honest, I think I miss TSCC more than I'll miss dollhouse.  The TSCC season finale that turned out to be the series finale really was the best episode of the series, and it left me hangin' big time.  With dollhouse, at least there's enough lead time for Joss to write a finale that only Joss can write.  Or, should a campaign begin to get dollhouse on SyFy?  I'm sure tons of people are working on that already.

totally agree, so miss TSCC.......maybe they can bring it back like they did family guy!....we all know fox has problems choosing shows, and keeping the good shows on air, they make some really stupid desicions at fox, they need a kick in the ass!! i bet they have worse shows with lower ratings then TSCC and Dollhouse but because sci-fi tv can only really reach out to a sci-fi audience and is generally not as popular as other forms on tv i.e. the sitcom etc it's the first to go

Well crap. Though, like most

Well crap. Though, like most people, I kinda saw this coming--honestly, I'm mostly just glad that it made it to a second season!

And, uh, not to be the stereotypical grammatically-obsessed lesbian or anything, but the phrase is "intents and purposes" not "intensive purposed."

Well that sucks

That's a huge buzz kill.  Just when I was holding out hope for a third time (1-not getting cancelled last year, 2- full season this year.)  We get hit with this crap.  In my dream world Joss will pack DH up and move to another network willing to show it on a day that isn't a crapshoot.  Crazier things have been done (The hills is still on air)

Joss Speaks

Joss posted another comment on Whedonesque.com this morning about the news, saying in part:

Howzabout that schedule? Well, I'm not as depressed as everyone else. We weren't about to rock sweeps anyway, and though there's a chilly November, December is CRAZY. It's like an Advent calendar of episodes! We get November to try to spread the word (which I'll be leaning on Fox to do, though it's hard to imagine them doing as good a job as the WhyIWatch guy) and then December is pure gluttony. Plus the episodes line up extremely well in these pairs, and we'll have an absurdly appropriate lead-in.

Who knows, maybe people will get bored of their families during the holidays, finally tune into Dollhouse, get hooked and -- BAM -- we have a third season. We can all dream, can't we?

p.s. Major doh! on my grammatical boneheadedness earlier. Sleep deprivation is a hell of a thing.

WTF is up at FOX???

Wonderfalls, Firefly, T:SCC, and now Dollhouse (and I'm probably forgetting something)... WTF, Fox?!  I have never felt such anger toward a network as I have toward Fox.  They keep getting me hooked on these quirky, interesting shows, and then pulling them.  It's pissing me off!  I am so torn about this network, because while they continually disappoint me by cancelling my favorite shows, they are also home to other favorites, Glee, Bones, and House.. plus I'm looking forward to Wanda Sykes new show.  Oh, Fox, this love/hate relationship is killing me.

Agreed!

Fox also nixed Dark Angel after two seasons. The Fox Friday slot is a death knell!

I have to confess I haven't

I have to confess I haven't much liked season 2 so far - but this is bad news. I really want to get back to the quality of the second half of season 1 and go from there.

New night puh-leaaase

I would LOVE to catch an ep of this in real-time but alas! fox you put these foxy ladies (and gents) on a friday night! So i'm forced to watch the post-show replays on hulu.

Not. cool.

Methinks if there were a time slot switch, Echo wouldn't be playing to an empty room.

Get on it Fox!

Anyone agree?

Fringe is too good a show to

Fringe is too good a show to be paired off with this crap show.

It killed The Sarah Connor Chronicles and it was the one that survived to live another season. And I am thankful that this season only includes 13 episodes. It doesn't deserve anymore.

WTF = WTFox?!?!

Seriously, the Friday time slot -- who's bright idea was that?

And yeah, the show's been slow moving in terms of character development, plot/etc so it's really gonna suck when it gets pulled. I'd like to say "if" but I'm a realist, lol.

This week's and the previous week's eps were great -- I wonder why Whedon wrote the eps this way though (suuuuuuuuuper slow build up)?

And yeah, Tru Calling & TSCC -- loved them both but...

Bottom line:

FOX is to Dushku/Whedon like the Grey's Anatomy parking lot is to lesbians... buh-bye!
