Tina Fey and Ellen Page go live from New York

Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night Awesome! Sorry, I meant “Live!” I just got carried away when I heard that the first two post-strike SNL hosts will be Tina Fey and Ellen Page. The writers' strike hasn’t even been over for two full days, and already the good news is falling like manna from heaven. Tina will host Feb. 23, and Ellen will follow March 1. I’ve already marked my calendar.

Tina’s hosting gig will be her fist return to SNL since leaving the show in 2006 to create 30 Rock. While she is intimately familiar with the sketch comedy show’s inner workings (she joined in 1997 and served as a cast member, "Weekend Update" anchor and head writer), hosting is another animal altogether. Who knows: Maybe she’ll take another spin behind the anchor desk for old times sake. And you just know they’ll get in some inside jokes about her making a show about a show within the show that she once was on and is now returning to. Wow, sorry; I just have myself a meta migraine.

Like Tina, Ellen is also a first-time host. The Juno star has already proven her comedy chops in the film. I can’t wait to see how the freshly minted Academy Award nominee navigates the absurdities of live sketch comedy. Her appearance comes the week after she celebrates her 21st birthday. Oscar nominee, SNL host and X-Woman — and all by the age of 21? I’m equal parts in awe and jealous.

Oh, and speaking of being in awe, have you seen Ellen’s new Interview magazine cover photo? Hello.

It’s also nice visual confirmation of this secret “crime,” which she revealed at Sundance last year.

So, which host are you most excited about? Or, like me, do both of them make you want to Snoopy-dance around the room?

A-MAZ-ING!

Ok, this is THE most exciting news in AGES!

How perfect too - I just happened to be watching SNL last weekend (one of the re-runs of course) and I kept thinking: "Why hasn't Tina Fey hosted yet??"

And then Ellen Page the week after??

I think that's just too much cool, geeky pleasure all at once.

Love Them Both...

I love them both!  I don't usually watch SNL, but I will make exceptions when the host or musical guest is someone I really want to see, so in this case I will twice make the exception and eagerly watch SNL!

I can't wait to go to my local bookstore and pick up a copy of the new Interview with Ellen Page on it as well.

YES! YES!

I read this news last night on tvguide.com and just thought to myself... "OMG, there is totally going to be a blog about this tomorrow!"

FANTASTIC news... I really hope Tina does Weekend Update. And I'm DEFINITELY looking forward to seeing what they do about 30 Rock.

Ellen Page after?!? Excuse me... I need to go sleep off some of this excitement.

Sorry to nitpick but

"Tina’s hosting gig will be her fist return to SNL since leaving the show in 2006 to create 30 Rock."

Sorry to nitpick but Tina's first return to SNL after leaving to do 30 Rock was actually a brief cameo with Tracy Morgan in the monologue when Alec Baldwin was hosting to promote 30 Rock.

I've never really liked SNL,

I've never really liked SNL, only watching it when someone I really really love is on the show, and I can't even remember when the last time was. But I'll definitely be watching when Ellen Page is on. I have a massive crush on her. And when I saw that issue of Interview in my mailbox? I couldn't get inside to read it fast enough. Love her.

If you like the Interview cover,

you'll go wild for this undated pic of Ellen, taken long before she became the IT girl, posing ala Patti Smith's iconic cover for her most famour album Horse.

It's on this vid at 0.45. Enjoy!

Sweeet!

Soo can't wait!  I'll admit, I haven't jumped on the Ellen Page bandwagon yet, (mostly because I haven't seen Juno yet), so I'm starting to rearrange things for Tina Fey's hosting spot.  Heck Yeah!!!

Is it me or does Ellen have total "T.H.O." in that first picture?  I don't why I noticed that? :-)

Bless Your Heart

Very Very Very happy to know that I'm not the only one who cheers at the mere mention of Tina Fey's name.  And in the spirit of my famous Tina Fey cheer, I pull out the pom poms and.... TINA FEY! TINA FEY! YAY! YAY! YAY! *Cartwheels and mid-air splits and all* lol

Aw, Slym, what's not to love about Tina Fey? ;) She's funny in an outright way and an ironic way, she's from PA, and she didn't get lasiks surgery. Who doesn't love glasses? It's like looking at a puppy through a window :D

Tina AND Ellen?

This almost gave me a coronary.

I'm totally in like with Tina Fey and utterly head over heels for Ellen Page... Oh man. In lieu of that Interview cover I'm going to go pass out now.

aliyaskie's picture

I've been convinced that

I've been convinced that they somehow broke into my brain to program their first two weeks back since I read about this a few days ago. They seriously are probably the two people I'd want to watch host the show.

If these two shows suck (the way many, many episodes have since Tina left), I'm giving up on SNL for good.

Excellent news!

I haven't watched SNL in ages, but I wouldn't miss those two women!

If Ellen isn't queer, then those two are the top of the "Best Lesbian that Isn't" list.

Thanks :)

Sounds like you've made quite a few hearts flutter by posting the pic I was talking about, onedimplecheek [grin].

Yes, DorothySnarker - I realise I'm borderline creepy too, 21 notwithstanding!

And Cloe121212, if you haven't sampled any of Ms. Page's work yet, I would suggest  renting Hard Candy first. She is beyond genius in that film. She's in practically every scene, and she's rivetting( altho you might have to take a break halfway through, given the intensity of the film) She owned every frame of that movie. (That's the film that won her the Juno role)

Here's a snippet from a review:

"Page, in all of her wonder and glory, delivered a full grown, angry, devastatingly clever woman in a young girl’s body. Why this is so worthy of praise, besides the obvious, boils down to two important reasons; one, Ellen Page was considerably younger than Patrick Wilson (her co-star) but still retained the gusto and the talent to completely hold her own despite any intimidation that might’ve been present by the age gap. Two, Page was essentially hoisting the entire film on her shoulders.

Ellen Page was constantly burdened with the task of pushing the action along and keeping the momentum and the tension and the suspense high. That’s quite the responsibility for a then 17-year-old to shoulder. "
