Fall television shows face a serious sophomore slump

Absence may make the heart grow fonder, but when it comes to TV, it's more like out of sight, out of mind. Several sophomore-season shows are having a hard time finding the love after their writers’ strike-abbreviated freshman years. Shows like Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Private Practice and Life are all down between 1 to 3 million viewers from last year. Ouch.

So, what gives? Lena Headey and Sarah Shahi in tank tops couldn't lure you back? Was the hiatus, at least six months (and in some cases, up to nine months) just too long to keep you interested?

If the early numbers on the new season are to be believed, it appears so. Reports show that first year shows that came back for a few episodes after the strike are reconnecting with audiences better than those that stayed away. Gossip Girl came back in April for five episodes and its numbers are still strong. Of course, the show also has Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, so that may throw off the statistical sample.

The new season is still young. Some folks may be slow to rediscover their shows and others might be watching online. But whatever the reason, the numbers aren't good news. So, fess up. What new shows from last season have you dropped, and why? Not enough time? Just plum forgot?

The best kind of math

Of course, the show also has Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, so that may throw off the statistical sample.

Spoken like a true Lesbian Scientician!

My fingers are crossed for Samantha Who? next Monday night. I don't want it to be a sophomore statistic.

I'm Watching

I haven't stopped watching any of my new favorites from last season--mainly because by the end of their first season, my must-see list had dwindled to three: Life, Pushing Daisies and Gossip Girl (if I watched Private Practice it was only because PD proceeded it).

If I had to guess why the ratings have dropped so substantially, I'd definitely blame the long hiatus AND network's aversion to playing reruns before the season aired. The CW was able to keep a buzz about Gossip Girl, in part, because they were willing to show repeats of the show during the hiatus. It allowed new people to get attached to the show and for regular viewers to stay acquainted.

The other networks, on the other hand, filled the time between the hiatus and the start of the new season with 15,000 episodes of ______________ (fill in name of vapid reality TV show here). It was a bad call on their part. They tried it for a bit with Private Practice (after Grey's) but they didn't market it well enough as a chance to get-to-know Addison again before the season premiere.

It'll be a shame if the slacking ratings impact Private Practice because, unlike Pushing Daisies and Life, it's much better than it was in its first season.

Nooooooooooooo!

These shows fall in 'my favorites' category, with the exception of PP (which I don't watch at all).  I would hate to see any of them get cancelled. My schedule permits for Monday and Friday shows, but I make a point to record Smallville. But I noticed Life was moved to Friday, of which I'm always fearful. Seems like anytime a show is moved to Friday, it eventually gets canned. And then again, maybe it's a good thing not having to compete with CSI Miami.

I guess the only show I dropped was Heroes, only because I missed the entire second season due to class schedules. Though I did watch it last night and was completely lost.

agh, too much tv....there go my brain cells.

VP debate

This might not be the only factor, but the Thursday shows went up against the VP debate which like 60 million people watched... I'm guessing that had an impact on the numbers too.
betsys2003's picture

not the network ones

All of the networks except the CW were PLAYING the debate, so none of the shows were up against it, they just had a week off.

I think maybe people kinda woke up and got lives during the strike.  I know I got more used to not coming home and watching TV, and now that it's back on, though I do tape some stuff it's not quite the focus of my life.  It'd be good for us all if that were the case...

Also, they only give new shows like 4 eps anymore and usually at a crappy time slot like friday nights or against something huge on another channel.  So it feels like there's less consistent shows anymore - just the big popular ones and then a rotating schedule of new shows that you don't want to get into because they will soon be cancelled.  Apparently the execs don't know that we don't like this.

I'm seriously hoping Fox

I'm seriously hoping Fox doesn't do something stupid like axe The Sarah Connor Chronicles :/ I love the show, but watch it online because I'm in the UK.

I would imagine these days that ratings really don't account for all those that ARE watching these shows in other forms. TV execs need to broaden their horizons and step into this century.

I Hope it Doesn't Get Terminated...

I really hope that Fox decides to keep TSCC going. It's my favorite new show, and I would hate to see it go after only one speedbump. The show has a load of potential, and I think it would be premature to decide that one so-so season warrants a dismissal. I don't want another Firefly on my hands!

I have to be truthful and

I have to be truthful and say the only one of theses shows I've ever watched was Private Practice.

And even then, I was on the first season when I eventually gave up because I was so disgusted in Addison's pod person. (what happened to the bitch?)

I'd like to watch these now, but hey, I'm a senior in high school, which contrary to populat belief is just as stressful as college, what with 3 APs, SATs, Senior Project, College Apps, Job, Exchange Program, and the every so glorious clubs I have to go to. This leaves me with 1 hour every night to catch up with friends,,or pass out in exhaustion.

In the end, I occasionally grab a couple episodes of something off youtube. I've actually watched a couple of gossip girl. Not that impressed actually.

She's Back

I think a lot of Grey's Anatomy fans gave up on Private Practice once they saw that Addison had become a shell of her former shelf, but I'd recommend giving it a shot again. There's only been one episode, so I don't want to be too effusive about it, but that episode was the Addison from Grey's Anatomy or, if you prefer, "the bitch" is back.

I have to say, the only

I have to say, the only show I'm bothered about out of that list is Pushing Daisies, and it only came back last week so I wouldn't write it off just yet.  At least that's what I'm telling myself.

In fairness to PD though, it was always going to be one of those shows that needs to find it's audience.

i also hope Sarah Connor

i also hope Sarah Connor Chronicles doesn't get the axe, cos i like it!!

looking at TTSCC, pushing daisies and private practice, being down in the ratings, but gossip girl isn't, is this not something to do with who actually watches the shows?

the first 3 i don't exactly see young kids/teenagers sitting down to watch (although maybe boys on the sarah connor chronicles front will), i see them more as adult orientated programmes, where as gossip girl i see as more driven towards the teenagers and folk in their early 20's.

is that not the difference here?? or am i just thinking that cos i'm not a teenager, lol?!

the haitus doesn't bother me, because if i like the shows, they're worth the wait. and funnily enough, they do happen every year.

do you think lost will suffer the same? it won't be back until next year, which is even longer than the other shows.

long live the sarah connor chronicles!! not too bothered about the others i mentioned!!

I Think

I think alot of viewers learned to live without TV. The strike took away most of our shows and we just found other ways to occupy our time so not many people are coming back. Of course im not one of those people (thank god for tivo)

No!

I LOVE LIFE!  THis is an awesome show!  Anyone who hasn't watched it should start!  Carmen is one of the stars...and she carries a gun and wears fancy detective clothes.  Pluss the ongoing plot is full of suspense...believe me you'll be hooked once you start watching.

I love TSCC!! Lena Headey

I love TSCC!! Lena Headey is super hot, and so is the chick who plays cameron. I just got into the show this season. It is a bit slow at times, but it's otherwise good.

Please don't pick the daisies!

I LOVE Pushing Daisies and would be very very sad if it went the way of Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me...:( I would also miss SCC and Chuck. Hopefully ABC will give Pushing Daisies some time to find it's audience. They don't have very many new shows this season (actually, just one, Life On Mars) so they must have a lot of confidence in their lineup. Don't disappoint me ABC!!! I need my Anna Friel and Cheno fix!!

The networks should have repeated the shows.

Before premiering the new second season, the networks would have been smart to repeat the first season shows to then move seemlessly into the second season.

With that said, I am finding myself disappointed, so far, in the second season of the shows that I thought were so great during the first season.

During the summer, it was Army Wives.  In the second season the show barely had any of the core texture that the first season did...which is what made it unique among a pack of possible shows about the lives of wives.

Now, it is Life I find myself disappointed in.  It has gone from an offbeat character-driven cop drama to a sexed-up cop show filled with one-line zingers.  If anyone read the recent TV Guide interview with Sarah, well...let's just say it confirmed my suspicions and disappointment about the show's second season.

Fox did repeat Terminator,

Fox did repeat Terminator, and I thought it was a good idea. It reminded me of what was going on and got me excited for the show to come back. Too bad it didn't seem to work for more people. I'm bummed about the rumors that it's being cancelled. But for once I have to say it's not really Fox's fault--they advertised the hell out of.
crashbang's picture

While they have promoted it

While they have promoted it quite fairly on TV, I've yet to see much quantity when it comes to other promotion. At least not when compared to CW's promotion of Gossip Girl, which is in the same time slot. CW has a lot less money to "throw around" than FOX and they've got quite the campaign going on between their transportation-based advertising (cabs, subway posters, buses, billboards) and magazine ads.

Also, they gave them a horrible time slot. Last year wasn't bad because they started mid-season so they weren't going against Monday Night Football. This year they're competing with MNF and Dancing with the Stars. I will give you that Dancing with the Stars doesn't have the same demographic, but Monday Night Football certainly does. This leads to a lot of DVR, which isn't always factored into ratings.

Add in the fact ratings are skewed anyway because not EVERYONE has a Neilsen box (maybe only 3% of the people with a Neilsen box are watching, but that doesn't mean that in the general population, 10% aren't watching) and that there are online viewers (the most recent episode of TSCC is#4 on iTunes top downloads) and you have a pretty good idea why ratings aren't the best way to measure a shows performance.

I know that over here in

I know that over here in Canada a lot of the shows I used to watch have been shuffled around, both time slot and channel wise. Take Pushing Daisies as an example, it's now playing on CTV's affiliate channel A. But they never advertised this on the main channel or alerted viewers in any direct way what-so-ever that this change took place. So, even now, I don't know when exactly the show plays (or if it even started) as with many others.

i just think more and more

i just think more and more people are watching shows online. at least thats what i do and the majority of my friends do too. its just easier and more convenient. i'm a student with a lot of crap to do...so there are three shows right now that i will actually tune in for...the rest i watch online when i get the chance (and this is probably 10 shows). they need to take this into account...and people don't just stream the shows from the network sites...cause it doesn't work for people out of country.

you stay. i'll stay. we'll be alone.

Of all those shows the only

Of all those shows the only one I regularly watch is TSCC. I have recently started to watch Life however and I think that if either of those get axed simply because of slow starts compared to their last season numbers it would simply be a mistake!
Jessie Jailbait's picture

People might be a little

People might be a little more concerned with what is happening on SNL rather than Life, TSCC, Pushing Daisies etc..I hope they don't axe TSCC. It's like watching a mini action movie every week. However, Fox is great at cutting shows at the first sign of ratings trouble.
Arcane Tremere's picture

agreed

Fox does not like to risk having a dead show that will drive people away. But they do tend to take great shows and bury them as well. Play the shuffle game, or the lets put a game on instead.

I guess with a new summer season the repeting of a series over the summer is something that has been lost. IS this a bad thing, I do not know. It is nice tosee new stories, but I think that summer re runs kept the fires going for show.

Now we have months go by with out a new episode, and mayeb peopel get interested in something else.
