Fall TV schedule: I'll show you mine if you show me yours

For couch potatoes in the States, this week kicks off a courting period with our televisions. This week, the new and returning shows start premiering in all their finery in hopes of winning a spot on our dance card for the season. Who will stay and who will go? Well, much like real dating, for some it will take repeat viewings, and for others it will only take that first episode to know whether they’re all right or all wrong. I though I’d share my dating watching game plan for the new season. Yes, even the embarrassing stuff. I'm sticking to mostly broadcast though, 'cause cable is way too embarrassing. Yes, I'm talking to you, The Girls Next Door.

MONDAY:
8 p.m.: Chuck (NBC) I’m going to give this computer geek and the CIA superspy odd-couple comedy a shot. I’m not in love with its cutsie premise, but what the hell, it’s Monday. Why not? And that’s it. I don’t watch Heroes. I know, audible gasp. While you’re at it, go ahead and gasp some more — I don’t watch Lost either.

TUESDAY:
8 p.m.: Bones (Fox) Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz and skeletal remains, oh my! And look, Christina Cox (Better Than Chocolate) guest stars in the Oct. 9 episode. Her character is linked to an S&M retreat. Yeah, you’re all watching now, aren’t you?
9 p.m.: House (Fox) Hugh Laurie almost makes me straight. I mean it. I love him. Oh, and I think I’ve figured out why new cast member Olivia Wilde’s character is called “13.”
10 p.m.: Damages (FX) until its season finale Oct. 23 and then Cashmere Mafia (ABC) once it premieres in November. And if I may give the brass at the alphabet network some free marketing advice, change the show’s tagline to “Like Sex and the City, but now with lesbians.” Trust me, that’ll bring the eyeballs.

WEDNESDAY:
8 p.m.: Pushing Daisies (ABC) I only needed to hear five words about this quirky new back-from-the-dead comedy to know it was on my must list: “From the creators of Wonderfalls.” Yes, please.
9 p.m.: Bionic Woman (NBC) The name says it all. A woman who is bionic. Duh, I’m watching.
9 p.m.: Private Practice (ABC) I’m going to record the premiere and see if it’s worth the programming effort. Otherwise, sorry, Kate Walsh. You’re cute and all, but the other chick is bionic. Beat that.
(I’m still hoping against hope that once The Return of Jezebel James premieres in the spring, it won’t be one big suck like the clips from its pilot. Otherwise I’ll just say a silent eulogy for Parker Posey’s career and move on.)

THURSDAY:
This is where things get tricky. In fact, I’ve turned the 8 p.m. hour on Thursday into a little game I like to call Watch, Record or Stream?
8 p.m.: Watch, Ugly Betty (ABC). Record, CSI (CBS — my affiliate airs it an hour early, damn them). Stream, 30 Rock (NBC). If I’m not too TVed out, I’ll tack The Office and My Name Is Earl onto my streaming schedule.

FRIDAY:
10 p.m.: Bill Moyers Journal (PBS)
No, really, I’m not kidding. This is, hands down, the best journalism on television today. Sometimes, believe it or not, I like to learn stuff.

SATURDAY:
Nada. Sometimes, believe it or not, I like to leave my house. Shocking, I know.

SUNDAY:
The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox) — oh, right, we’ll have to wait until freaking January to see the cutest lesbian florist ever — I mean, to see Lena Headey get all medieval on some really mean machines from the future. Until then, I revel in the lowbrow that is The Simpsons and Family Guy.

Hmm, looking at all of that, I can’t help thinking that I should probably read more books. Well, I’ve shown you my schedule; now you show me yours. Come on: It’s only fair.

No Samantha Who?

I'm kind of surprised.

Anyway... I'm a TV idiot, and I have no idea how I'm going to manage all of these, but:

Monday:
Chuck (NBC) - The Computer Wears Tennis Shows meets Jake 2.0.  Looks cute.
Big Bang Theory (CBS) - I caught an early download, and I'm horrified to say that I laughed out loud at most of it.  Definitely a guilty pleasure.  But it's on at the same time as Chuck, so it's getting taped.
Heroes (NBC) - I love this show.
Samantha Who? (ABC) - It's a maybe.  The pilot didn't leak, but the clips on YouTube looked cute.
Journeyman (NBC) - I haven't decided for sure about this one yet.  It looks interesting, but I definitely don't need to add another show to my addiction.

Tuesday:
Bones (FOX) - I'm so glad they moved this to pair with House.
House (FOX) - There are no words.  Greg House rocks.
Reaper (CW) - It's on at the same time as House, so it's getting taped.  But it's Kevin Smith doing a cross between Ghost Rider and Mallrats.  Geek heaven.
Boston Legal (ABC) - James Spader isn't the hottie he used to be, but this show is funny.

Wednesday:
Bionic Woman (NBC) - Am I evil for watching this show more for the bad bionic woman than for the good bionic woman?  Katee Sackhof... mmmm.

Thursday:
Ugly Betty (ABC) - I want more Amanda insanity!
Smallville (CW) - Another guilty pleasure.  But Supergirl was my favorite when I was a kid, and I gave up reading comics for decades when they killed her off (Barry "Flash" Allen was my second favorite comics character, so CoIE was a serious body blow), so as much as I know this version is going to blow, I can't not watch it.  Of course, it's on at the same time as Ugly Betty, and that's when I'm putting my daughter to bed anyway, so they're both getting taped.  Or taped and downloaded (not that I'd do that, of course).

Friday:
Ghost Whisperer (CBS) - Honest to God, I don't know why I watch this show.  It's slutwear and tear jerkers.  But I got hooked, and now I don't know what to do.  At least it has Camryn Manheim.
Numb3rs (CBS) - You know, when this show started, I honestly thought it'd get cancelled midseason.  Math?  In the land of the dumb and the home of the GED?  My theory about why it succeeded the way it has is that it's on Friday nights.  Friday night partying probably raises the average IQ of the Friday night television audience sharply.  Of course, I'm an Orthodox Jew, so I get to set the timer for both of these shows.

And that doesn't include Medium and Lost and Battlestar Galactica, none of which start until mid-season. <sigh>  And it doesn't include Weeds and Dexter and The L Word, either, because I borrow tapes of those.  I need to get a life.

Life...

After the Bionic Woman, you might want to check out Life.  The pilot rocks, and Sarah Shahi packs heat.

regularly scheduled programming

Well, I can’t do days/times, cuz I never remember.   I literally have to check airing schedules regularly and get daily calls/emails from friends to remind me.

With that said (and in no particular order):

Broadcast tv (just typing that brings tiny pangs of self-loathing/guilt):

Lost, 30 Rock, My Name is Earl, The Office, My Life on the D-List, Damages, The Riches, Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman, the Closer (which I rarely remember to watch).

But always, always, always – the holy trinity of Comedy Central:  The Daily Show/The Colbert Report/South Park.  Also, Sarah Silverman (even tho her standup is way better).

The ones I hope to love:  Pushing Daisies, Return of Jezebel James, and Cashmere Mafia.  But if history is any indication, I’ll bet only 1 of these shows will still be on my list by year’s end (yeah, State of Mind, I’m talkin’ to YOU.   I tried to like you, I wanted to like you, and I’ll always love you Lily – but that show sucks).

Cable:  Weeds, Dexter, Californication, Brotherhood.  Real Time with Bill Maher.  (The L-Word, but it's more like rubbernecking - like a car crash I'm compelled to stare at.  Or an ex I can't quite quit).

HBO – you broke my fucking heart.  R.I.P. – Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Carnivale.  But I’m a whore, so I’ll be back for Alan Ball’s new show, True Blood.

Funny, I always think I don’t watch a lot of tv….so, WOW.  And I’ve probably forgotten 1 or 2 shows…

and yay for Bill Moyers!

Pyewacket's picture

I don’t watch Heroes. I don’t watch Lost either.

You had me at hello.  ; )

I started liking Bones more and House much less last season but having Christina Cox guest star is the cherry on top and Olivia Wilde being added to the cast has reeled me back in to at least watch the 1st eppie.

I am going to give Private Practice my best effort too...not just for Kate Walsh...but for the sake of the other women on the show...like Amy Brenneman and Audra McDonald.

I am really looking forward to Pushing Daisies and Cashmere Maffia...so I hope they don't disappoint...but I know by now to never judge a show by the pilot.

Noclaf's picture

If I wasn't bothered by this pesky collage thing,,,

Yay! a nice clear schedule, that tells me exactly what I'm missing, while I when I'm sitting through English class, or learning aikido. This year's line up is really, temping me to get TeVo.

And don't feel bad about missing lost. I gave up on it after they killed Michell Rodriguez, because the plot was just too damn incoherent. JJ Abrams is a great creator, but he just doesn't know when to wrap up a show. Him and the network will advertise Lost to death, just like Alias.

Read less, more TV

But you know what House says: "Read less, more TV";)
Ace14's picture

After five years

of no cable (byproduct of an illegal sublet), I suddenly have super, mongo cable plus dvr. Which means I can explore network tv again!

Monday: Journeyman. I loved Quantum Leap and this reminds me of that.

Tuesday: Law and Order: SVU. The last two seasons bit, but I'm still loyal to Mariska. Alas. Although I'm not sure what I'll do once Cashmere Mafia comes on. Watch one and record the other, I suppose.

Wednesday: Bionic Woman. She's no Lindsay Wagner, but she's still bionic.

Thursday: 30 Rock This is the show I wished I watched regularly last year.

MelissaC5's picture

OK I'll bite

So I almost never watch tv when it airs, except Battlestar Galactica, which isn't til January.

Monday: HIMYM if I'm home and remember (uh so maybe 5 times a year), Heroes (ZOMFG Kristin Bell this season), Journeyman (maybe something actually good and made post 70s being set in SF) +Weeds and Californication

Tuesday: Eureka

Wednesday: Pushing Daisies (Wonderfalls creator AND Kristin Chenoweth), Bionic Woman (it's weird though- Michelle Ryan on Jekyll hypnotizing, but I'm not feeling it yet, although maybe I just love Katee Sackhoff sooooo much that I can't see anyone else?)

Thursday: 30 Rock (just completed the dvd rewatch marathon, and they plant flags sometimes 8 or more eps ahead of time. Crazzzzzy. plus I think Tina Fey may be the only woman on tv that could make me look away from Katee Sackhoff) the Office.

Friday: Friday Night Lights.

Sat: Torchwood

Sun: Dexter and Brotherhood.

...aside from Showtime, it looks like NBC has monopolized my brain. :/

Stargate: Atlantis!!! ^_^

YES, someone actually mentions Stargate Atlantis, how could anybody leave Stargate Atlantis off a TV premier must see list, honestly. ^_^

From what I’ve seen of the rough cut of the two parter floating around the internet there’s not going to be much Carter in charge in the premier, or much Carter at all really, but Weir; she rocks the entire season opener, I’m so crushed that she’s only in four episodes. ^_^

I Watch Too Much TV

I just made a chart of my TV viewing schedule and, I've got to say...I didn't realize how many of the new shows conflicted (with each other and with old favorites). Clearly, I need to follow Sarah and Lori's lead and step my TiVo game up.

Monday: Weeds. That's it.

Tuesday: watch Reaper (per Sarah and Lori's recommendation); watch Cane (Jimmy Smits...swoon!); record Law & Order: SVU (Mariska Hargitay <3)

Wednesday: watch ANTM (I'll stick with it through the makeovers, at least); watch Private Practice (just keep repeating Kate Walsh, Taye Diggs, Amy Brenneman over and over in my head); record Bionic Woman (or watch the replay on Friday on Sci-Fi); watch Pushing Daisies and record Life (that's how good Pushing Daisies is...it'll make me skip watching Sarah Shahi); check the schedule for repeats of Top Chef/Project Runway

Thursday: watch Ugly Betty; watch Grey's Anatomy; watch Mad Men (and in doing so, rejoice in the fact that I'm not watching Big Shots)

Friday: watch Sci-Fi replay of Bionic Woman; watch Degrassi; watch Women's Murder Club; watch Men in Trees

Saturday: Catch up on all my Tivo

Sunday: watch 60 Minutes; watch Desperate Housewives (two words: Dana Delaney); watch Brothers & Sisters (the TiVo gets to rest on the Sabbath)

Note: This list disregards my penchant for sporting events that can, at any given moment, supplant any of the aforementioned shows.

Friday Night Lights

It's about so much more than football. I do like football, but I know gay men who don't like football and still love Friday Night Lights. Get the first season on netflix and set the DVRs to record Friday nights.

Dexter is great as are the books in case you want something to read.

Harpy's picture

Smallville!!

I'm sure I'll miss some good shows because I'm typically not the type who looks forward to the new shows in the Fall -- I like my season premieres though.  So, this is an ideal list for me, I guess.

Monday:

Heroes -- I'm not ga-ga over it like so many others, but I do like the show.  Journeyman.  Maybe.  It's opposite Monday Night Football and I'm already recording/watching Heroes then.  I'll probably just catch the episode on NBC's website if they air it there.

Tuesday:

House, of course.  I *may* watch the first episode of Cavemen just to reinforce the fact its going to be horrible.

Wednesday:

Kid Nation - It's actually quite entertaining.  I would have loved to do something like that when I was a kid.  Kitchen Nightmares - Maybe.  Bionic Woman. Pushing Daisies - May check that one out too.

Thursday:

SMALLVILLE!  YAYAYAY!  (I love Smallville obviously), Survivor, ER (Eventhough last season kinda sucked)

Nothing I really care to watch on Friday, Saturday or Sunday at this time.  But will check out Cashmere Mafia, Amazing Race, and The Sarah Connor Chronicles when they come out.

Charlie Rose.....and Cave Men

Monday-Friday:

I usually watch Charlie Rose at the round-table at 11PM followed by Tavis Smiley at 12AM , both on PBS.  When I remember, I watch the Wide Angle documentaries, also on PBS, which air about once a month....I like PBS. I like documentaries.   Sometimes, depending on the guest(s) and show topic, I also watch  The Oprah Winfrey Show at 1:05 AM on ABC.

 Wednesday:

I want to give Private Practice a chance because it has Amy Brenneman and Audra Mc Donald.  I think part of the reason I like Amy is because she reminds me of Xena, and I mean Xena the character, not Lucy Lawless, because Lucy Lawless looks and behaves very much unlike Xena. And, I saw one episode of Judging Amy, and I liked her in that, not to mention, she plays a psychologist/therapist (I am a psychology person). I liked Audra from her performance at Carnegie Hall?/Lincoln Center?, which aired, again, on PBS  some months ago.  I liked Merrin Dungey in the pilot, but, if she had to be replaced, Audra was not a bad choice.

guilty pleasures:

America's Next Top Model (not! lol), otherwise known as Tyra Banks Tries To Prove She Can Still Model, Act, Be Funny, Be Sexy And Be The Next Oprah/Therapist, With Malnourished and Ill-Educated Fans Posing As Contestants...---I watch it more as a tragic comedy.

...and The View.  I only watch it about once a week, or less, because I have other things to do around that time, and only the first ~20 minutes because I like to hear what Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar have to say about current events. I am still surprised that there are two brown people(out of the regular four= 1/2=50%),  females, really brown, not light brown bordering on beige, on the same show, and one is the lead host, who has a rasta do, in the US , on ABC, at 11 AM, and it's not even Black History Minute Month.

I call it a guilty pleasure, though I rarely watch it, because it's connected to Barbara Walters, etc....

And....I am very much looking forward to Cave Men.

Thursdays:

UGLY BETTY the cast is one of the best on TV

The people for 30 Rock!

While I don't agree with all the choices you've made, Ms. Snarker (Chuck over How I Met Your Mother?! No America's Next Top Model?!), I implore you, please, to watch 30 Rock and stream Ugly Betty instead. 30 Rock needs all the ratings it can possibly get!

Also, good call on Bionic Woman; I don't care if the pilot was absolutely horrendous, it's a hot woman. Being bionic.

I don't watch a lot of TV,

I don't watch a lot of TV, but there are a couple of shows that have caught my interest.  The first one is definitely Bones, I already watch that and own both seasons on DVD.  One of the best shows I have seen in years and I'm really excited to see the 3rd season, great chemistry there too.  Then there's Bionic Woman, I really want to see that as well and I don't have a choice, my wife has been looking forward to it for 6 months.   The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I don't think it's going to be wonderful but I'm going to watch it.  I love Lena Headey dearly but Linda Hamilton will always be Sarah Connor to me.  And of course Cashmere Mafia.  I enjoy 30 Rock, L&O SVU, House, Cold Case, and Ugly Betty.  I'll try not too watch too much TV, but this season is pretty tempting.

I have the t.v attention span of 4 year old

Not many shows can hold my attention for an hour. Shoot, some can't even hold it for 10 minutes. When a show isn't holden on I immediately change the channel. On most nights I'm watching 2 shows at once. Thanks to Comcast On Demand I got to watch a few pilots ahead of time. The Bionic Woman, Life, Chuck and JourneyMan were ones I was lucky enough to watch. Now this week I can watch some other shows I would've missed because of those 4.

Monday- 8pm - Chuck and Dancing w/ the stars. Chuck was awesome. It was funny and well written and it actually held my attention. Plus Sarah Lancaster is on it. She was the girl Ephram had a baby with on Everwood. lol I sadly stopped paying attention after while.

9pm - Heroes and Girlfriends. One is entertaining and the other is extremely funny. That hour is an awesome.

10pm - JourneyMan. That show won me over. I thought would be into it but it surprised me by being good. It's also set in San Francisco. Such a lovely city.

Tuesday - 8/8:30pm- Dancing and Biggest Loser. There are 2 reasons to love the Big L. Reason 1; Jillian Michaels. Reason 2; Jillian Michaels's body. Enough said.

9pm - BL and The Reaper. I'm excited too see if the show is up to my standards of funny.

10pm Law and Order SVU. Mariska Hargitay is fan-freaking-tastic.

Wednesday - 8 pm- America's Next Top Model and Dancing. I thought ANTM was crap when I first heard of it. lol I still do but now I enjoy it. I only started watching in season 4 was because had ebola on her face Michelle. I continued because a few episodes later she came out. I've been hooked ever since.

9pm - Bionic Woman and Private Practice. I'm gonna watch BW but I'm gonna be happy about it. The pilot was stupid. I was bored watching it and the plot holes annoyed me. I was sad they replaced the deaf sister with a hearing annoying one. A hearing little sister, like thats never been done before. I'm hoping it gets better. I wuv Kate Walsh. I'm treating this show like I know nothing about it. We can all agree that the semi-pilot sucked and should never be mentioned again. Yay Taye Diggs is back on the air. Damn that man is fine. I've had a crush on him for years.

10pm Life and whatever. I'm a proud supporter of Sarah Shahi.

Thursday - 7pm- Survivor: China. I like rooting for people.

8pm - Smallville, My name is Earl and Ugly Betty. Thursdays are always super busy. I love Superman and Chloe . Never really got into Ugly Betty but I try. I also try with Earl but I keep forgetting.

9pm - Grey's Anatomy. Hands down one of the hottest well rounded female casts ever. I was already in love Sandra and Katherine due to Under the Tuscan Sun and Rosewell. Sara amazed me the moment I saw her on screen. She stole my heart when did her underwear dance. And Chandra is just adorable. I only like Ellen Pompeo when she's acting with Sandra. Those two have wonderful Chemistry.

10pm ER and Whatever. Er and the Simpsons are like my younger siblings. I barely remember a time without them being on.

Friday- Whatever. I stopped planning to watch t.v on Friday my freshman year of high school. I am a band geek. All band geeks know that your Fridays belong to Football games. After I was done with Band hanging out with my friends took over.

Sunday-Whatever. The L word comes back in January so I'll defiantly be watching that.

There were only 2 people that compare to my list for the fall. And there are still more that are being added when I find time to download them...because my dvr is chalk full of shows.

Tues- Bones (8pm), NCIS (8pm), Reaper (9pm),  & House (9pm)

This is not including Pushing Daisies, Life, Weeds, 30 Rock, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Lost, Gossip Girl, Dirty Sexy Money, and Cashmere Mofia.

I should probably say this doesn't include the vlog review like 'We're Getting Nowhere" that I watch as well.

And how I manage to watch all this tv, is beside me. I don't even know myself. But I don't just sit around and watch tv all day. I do have a social life. I do go to work. And I do go to school. I think it's sleep that I miss out on. But who knows.

too much tv.

Monday
How I Met Your Mother - my absolute favorite. Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan.. ridiculously hot. And everyone is hilarious.
Samantha Who?
The Hills, Weeds, My Boys - all on at the same time. I have yet to figure it out.
Californication - who knew David Duchovny wasn't the most obnoxious human being on earth?

Tuesday
Reaper...Once Cashmere Mafia starts, I guess I'll have something else to watch on Tuesdays, though I'm still sad over the loss of Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls.

Wednesday
Top Model and/or Pushing Daisies, Private Practice (I'm giving it two more shots, and then officially giving up) After I give up, I might watch Gossip Girl because I actually did like Mark from the L-Word.

Thursday
Ugly Betty & Greys

Friday
I'll avoid the couch until South of Nowhere comes back on.

Sunday
Desperate Housewives (eh) & Brothers and Sisters

and until college football season is over, my saturdays involve some of that at my alumni bar.

Tired of playing 'find the Black'

with TV shows which is why the majority of these shows are already on my not-going-to watch list.  As a lover of TV and movies, I always find it disheartening that Black performers are ALWAYS overlooked (with exceptions) when it comes to casting.  When a new character is introduced on a show or a new show premiers, regardless of how good the show may be, I always find myself asking, “a Black person couldn’t play that role?”  Why? Because I'm Black and I actually like seeing representation of my race on TV.  I don’t even watch the L word b/c it makes absolutely no since that Blacks (and real Mexicans) are pretty much overlooked or turned into a caricatures (Papi anyone?) or we have to contend with the ‘Angry Black Butch’ (Tasha).  It's 2007 and media companies are still pandering and catering to White people.  I don't have anything against White people working.  What I do have a problem with is casting directors and studios sticking to the 'blue-eyed, blond hair cut-out' script they've been following since the beginning of cinema.

Granted, not all Blacks have an issue with this problem just like not all Lesbians have a problem with not seeing representation on the screen.  Lesbians and Black actually have a lot in common when it comes to not being seen enough in TV shows and mainstream movies.  Hell a show I really like, Brothers and Sisters, have TWO gay men now.  Why couldn’t the illegitimate daughter been a lesbian?  Why do they need two gay males on one show?  They don’t.  It’s just that White gay men run Hollywood and couldn’t care less about proper representation.  So you see I’m looking through the eyes of a Black Lesbian who has to search very, very hard to find an appearance of one of us.   I’m still looking.

I’m not going to even get started with Logo which is so white I have to wear shades just to watch the majority of the shows.  Yes, I do watch Logo just like every once in a while I watch TV1…to give them ratings.  However, Logo really needs to step up and start featuring shows that actually have Black Lesbians in roles with good storylines.  I doubt if I’ll even watch their new show b/c it features 5 white lesbians as the leads.  Not one Black woman.  WTF?  I’m tired of it, I really, really am.

Aside from Ugly Betty

I will watch ANTM (this year is a first for my viewing it, Tyra is ... well, Tyra), Gossip Girl, and the History Channel International...

I also am re-watching Bad Girls, though I get royally pissed off when it is edited.

Other than that, it is mostly whatever is ON DEMAND.... oh, and Timewarp Trio, Tutenstein, and Growing Up Creepie, all of which I watch with the kids... but I love Timewarp Trio and would watch even without the kids.

There's nothing on on Saturdays. Ever! So leave the house.

SUNDAY:

Dexter, Brothers and Sisters, the L Word, Big Love and whatever lame but intoxicating VH1 reality show is on right now it's Rock of Love.

EVERYDAY SHOWS:

The Ellen Degeneres Show and Jeopardy

I'm not sure when these shows air but looking foward to them: Cashmere Mafia, Pushing Daisies, Sarah Connor Chronicles (saw the preair pilot and it is amazing) and that Zooey Deschanel show whose name I don't recall.

Gosh this was really depressing/embarassing I'm going to Borders now.

You listed Top Chef, so I am right there with you :) It's the only reality show worth its salt, so to speak. Go Casey, Go!

Praise Be

This week is great because: Dexter started.  So did Earl and The Office.  South Park and Sarah Silverman WILL be starting.  So will 30 Rock  :D

It’s like the High Holy Week of TV – the most blessed viewing days of the year.

Plus it’s Oct 1, so praise be to the autumnal goddesses.   Let us all bow our heads and give thanks  :)
