Even Jennifer Beals doesn't know what Ilene Chaiken is up toWho wants some girls in tight dresses? Of course you do, you naughty minxes, of course you do. The new character and group promo shots for the lovely ladies of The L Word were released this week and they look like a literal interpretation of those damn Betty lyrics.
Yes, Shane in a dress. No, the universe no longer makes sense. Someone, hold me. Also, that big honking “Fin” was not my poetic Photoshopping license. And speaking of Photoshop, the marketers got busy with their favorite program in the other shots as well. I mean, seriously, could they be more obvious by including both a pool and a sunset in this shot? Hey, Showtime, your metaphors are showing.
For their solo shots, the ladies largely give their interpretations on the little black dress. Jennifer Beals Hey, where is her other arm? Did Bette have a nasty encounter with the business end of one of Jodi’s metal sculptures? Laurel Holloman On the plus side, Tina looks vamptastic. And, look, a tattoo. Kate Moennig Hallelujah. Shane is out of that dress. The world makes sense again. Leisha Hailey Did Alice piss off the costume department? On the plus side, if she is ever in a shipwreck, that dress could easily double as a flotation device. Rose Rollins Tasha would make Sir Mix-a-Lot proud with this pose. Rachel Shelley Bette’s arm and now Helena’s leg. What have these poor appendages done to deserve this wretched fate? Pam Grier Kit, damn girl. That is all. However, Daniela Sea, Cybill Shepherd and Marlee Matlin must have missed the memo about picture day because they all got their promos from Season 4 recycled (and clothing Photoshopped to black) instead. I’ve grouped them together, so as not to be redundant. And, before you ask, Mia Kirshner was nowhere to be found amid the solo shots. Jenny Schecter, wherefore art thou?
While there isn’t too much illumination to be found in these new pictures, there are some revealing comments from Jennifer Beals about the big murder/accidental death/who-the-hell-cares mystery of the season. The actress apparently told The National Ledger that she was “completely” surprised by the developments and was thrown “a little off-balance by it. It seemed very different from what we had done prior, but you kind of roll with the flow. We'll see what happens.”
She confirms that the season is, indeed, told in flashback and doesn’t know how the final product will be edited. As she said: They didn't have to tell all of us, or any of us. The only thing is, it would help me with doing press. I really have no attachment. To me, after it’s done, I rarely watch it. All those people in the studio that were there when we wrapped — all the crew members, the production team, everybody — they’re all responsible for what we accomplished. ... It’s not me, it’s a collective. That’s the beauty of film and television. Hmm. Now, normally, I take what The National Ledger writes with a grain or bucket of salt. But then, when I read Jennifer’s quote about what is next for her, I started to trust the source a bit more. After taking some time off to relax, she said: I’ll find another project, and I hope it will be as satisfying as The L Word, and we’ll see. I’m not in a huge hurry. I’ve been reading scripts with women characters who are not drawn very thoroughly. To be on a woman-centric show and then read scripts where a woman is an ancillary character is a rude awakening. I don’t think even The National Ledger could make up a quote with the world “ancillary” in it. That’s got to be Jennifer. So, “no attachment,” “it’s done,” “rarely watch” — that doesn’t exactly sound like a ringing endorsement of the new season. But then, maybe she is just acknowledging what we’ve all known for five seasons. This is Ilene Chaiken's crazy train and we’re just — willing or unwilling — along for the ride. Speaking of Mama Chaiken, guess who included an enormous promo shot of herself (in a tank top, no less) among the cast promos?

Why is everyone so worked up about this?
Every other actress was referred to in the post by their character's name, and nobody cares, except about Shane. What gives?
Also, I have always assumed these promo pic things were of the characters, not the actors/actresses. I remember they used to have them for Buffy and I always thought it was like a nice group shot of the Scoobies.
That said, I think it was wrong to have Tasha in a dress too. I can't see either Tasha or Shane wearing a dress. Not to say that Rose wasn't hot - she's somehow hot femme and hot butch...incredible. But it didn't look like Tasha - which pulls me out of the magic and reminds me that they are actresses, which I think is unfortunate.

How bad is a) the recycling on Daniela, Cybill and Marlee .. and b) Mia's omission o_O ? Oh Ilene...where art tho brain?
However on a side note: I'd like to have Jennifer's and Pam's dress in my wardrobe please..how great do those look O_O!

If Ilene is trying to make us not care that the show is over, this is a good start. The show is nearly off the tracks with crap like this.
Now don't get me wrong, dresses and hot women and legs, all good. Most of these women look great. But Shane in a dress?
It was bad enough when Carmen put her in a dress. But at least they went for sad/cute vs. little black dress.
I'm frustrated with the show and it hasn't even started yet. This should be a hell of a season at this rate.

Some women were never meant to wear a dress. Kate M. is one of them... Daniella Sea is another. And Alice's dress looks like some warped creation of teh Mad Hatter! I'm not a big fan of the L Word anymore. I may one day buy the boxed sets, but Ilene lost me at the begining of season 2. Still, if nothing else, I always look forward to the recaps - they're far more entertaining!

Alice and Tina and Kit in the top photo look esp. better than usual (and that's not a dig at their usual looks) ... I have seen Kate in a dress befoer i think, and femmy dangly earrings. its not as weird as i thouht, i like it when ppl try other stuff but if Shane did it thatd be weird, and i prefer non-dresses on her

I laughed on the comment about Leisha pissing off the costume department. It's true that lately she's been appearing in some strange outfit, needless to say "bad-looking", but I don't know. It's still Leisha, she's awesome.
About the new season, too many spoilers in my head, I don't know what to think anymore.

I'm glad I'm not invested
I'm glad I'm not invested in this show, so I can (mostly) sit back and laugh at the ridiculousness. Ilene's picture, and of course that she included a shot of herself in the first place, cracked me right up.
Bummer about the final season from a fan's perspective though. None of the cast have made any positive comments about it that I've heard. That's sort of...alarming. Maybe it's just par for the course with this show. But the 5th season was quite decent from what I saw, so I was hoping they'd go out on something of a high note. Still, it can't be worse that Season 3 right?

Damn, I don't usually like Kate all femmed up but she looks surprisingly hot in that dress.
But, alas, nothing makes my lady parts jump like seeing her decked out in all her androgynous glory. That individual shot is just YUM.
Makes me realise that I will miss seeing Ms. Moennig's swagger on TLW ... guess I'll have to go back to the days of watching the millions of fanvids of her on YouTube, lol.
Seriously though, all the women look GAWJUS in these pics. Special mention for Laurel/Tina, though - vamptastic indeed!
And yeah, Leisha's/Alice's dress was a no-no. I think because she is the "quirky" character the costume folks think they can make her wear the weirdest things.

My first thought when I saw Kate in the dress was 'Wow, nice legs Kate'! Then in her solo in pants, she looks sad like she's stuck in them. I think the black, plus her hands in her pockets are making her legs look thinner.
As an aside: I for one think Kate looks so beautiful when she's more glammed up (read: a touch more femme rather than this "butch masquarading as androgyny" thing that's going on). However, I get that Shane's as a character wouldn't dress that way, so I accept it. I'd love to know what Kate's doing after TLW...

IC just pisses me off. How the hell can anyone go from Dana to that is beyond me. The bad acting and terrible wardrobe is not ALL Rose's fault because I hate how somepeople (can't)write for African Americans.
This picture is another pet peeve of mine about the L(ame) Word. How they let the secondary characters pose with the main cast. WTF is up with that?
