Evan Rachel Wood is Dita Von Teese Version 2.0Oh hey, look, it's Dita Von Tee…eek! Wait, that's not Dita. That's, um, that's. Oh God, that's Evan Rachel Wood. It's only taken her 14 months to completely and totally turned herself into her boyfriend Marilyn Manson's ex-wife, Dita Von Teese. The horror, the horror.
Rachel stepped out last night for The Life Before Her Eyes screening in New York. Rachel stars in the new thriller, which opens in limited release Friday, along with Uma Thurman. Her new so-brown-it's-basically-black do made its public debut at the event and the result was startling -- startlingly familiar, that is.
Look, as creepy as I think it is to that a 39-yer-old man is dating a 20-year-old girl and calls her his twin,” it's even creepier that said 20-year-old girl has morphed herself into said 39-year-old man's ex. It's just yucky. Seriously, ewww. I could go on and on about the nearly 20-year-age difference, but what bugs me the most is how the couple happily plays up their Lolita dynamic, right down to the red heart-shaped sunglasses. Look, jailbait is fun and something to emulate. Whee! And then there was that video. Shudder.
As much as I appreciate everyone's right to look how they want and as much as I know Marilyn's prince of the goths act is all for show, I can't help but be disturbed by Evan's willingness to mold herself so completely Dita's likeness. I mean, a few years ago she looked like this.
Ironically, I actually like the whole pale skin, red lips, dramatic eyes thing. I really do. But are none of Evan's friends going, “Dude, what's up with this whole Dita tribute thingie you've got going? It's weirding me out.”
Evan is a prodigiously talented young actress. She forever stole a piece of my heart with her honest, open portrayal of questioning teen Jessie on Once and Again. So I truly hope that her new looks comes from her own genuine love for the vampiric pallor and not a desperate desire, subconsciously or otherwise, to please a partner's preexisting preferences. I guess if she shows up sometime soon in a gigantic champagne glass, we'll have our answer.

Ick ick ick!
I just puked in my mouth a little.
Reminds me of that line from Midwest Teen Sex Show: "If you're in junior high and you're dating someone who's out of high school, he's a pedophile. And pedophilia's a disease. Would you date someone with cancer? No."
Dating someone with cancer
"Would you date someone with cancer? No."
Wow. It's weird the places all kinds of prejudices show up.
What's wrong with dating someone with cancer?
Nothing at all.
It's weird how sarcasm doesn't always translate.
I second that...
Seriously?
Offensive? It was sarcasm. OF COURSE there's nothing wrong with dating someone with cancer. That's why it's funny. They also had a t-shirt for a short while that said "Homosexuality is a choice. Like cancer!" But it was pulled because people thought it offensive (possibly because the font for the first sentence was much larger than the second, and the joke was lost from a distance).
It was from "The Older Boyfriend" episode, if you care to check it out for some context.
Here's another quotation for you, by the indomitable Mae West: "Those who are easily shocked should be shocked more often." But I do hope you recover quickly. :)
dude, it toooootally
dude, it toooootally depends on the kind of cancer.
whatever, it's a fuckin' joke... people need to lighten up.

Your avatar is awesome.

cancer
what? I don't understand that. I watched the MTSS-episode with the quote and I still don't get it. Is that supposed to be irony or what?
Seriously?
I'm confused. Either I'm stupid and I don't get the joke or this is actually a really effed up thing to say
Cancer Quote
I assume the quote in the show was meant to be satirical, but that doesn't mean it's not offensive. The show looked like complete trash anyway so I can't say I am shocked by it. However, it was in poor taste to post the entire quote here. Along with it being offensive, it detracts from this discussion and the poster's argument. I assume it was posted for shock value, in the same fashion it was used in that program.
_________
Wtf.
The lack of humor in this discussion is offensive.
Maybe it's just me, but if I don't laugh at Manson dating little ERW, I'll cry and vomit.
Can I just say...
...that i find this thread hilarious?
Humorless lesbians,
Why do I love thee?
sarah silverman episode
i usually don't like sarah silverman, but didn't she have an episode of her show where she thought she was/considered being a lesbian and while trying to act super gay said 'As a lesbian I resent your laughter. In fact, I resent all laughter.'
wonder where her inspiration came from...
Evan & Marylin (sounds so good...or not?!)
I agree with you, that was just a sarcastic sentence, nothing more.
To me it does not sound that offensive, but I understand those who feel a bit uncomfortable reading it, since illness is a very delicate topic and not everyone deals with it the same way (vive la différence!).
What I can't understand is what you really think about ERW's relationship with MM and her sudden style change (which is what the post is about!).
That "shocking" joke implies that dating someone older is NOT a sort of disease, but from your words above I think you are not so comfortable with the idea of these two being together.
If you want to know my opinion, well...I think it's really easy to generalize.
MM is one of the most controversial music stars, one moment he's looking all rotten and perverse and the next one he talks about serious stuff like Columbine or STDs, giving advice to young people.
This makes almost impossible to fully comprehend this kind of person: so how can we possibly judge someone just for being with him, rather than for who she is?
Personally, I have to say that goth vibe is not really my thing, and I was kind of puzzled when I casually found out the news, but still: maybe there's more underneath than a simplistic headline such as "old freak meets Lolita".
Oooooh, I love a bit of cake. Oooooh, cake. Oooooh, cake. Cake. Cake. Cake. Cake. I'm just one of these people. I come home and I need a piece of cake. [Marjorie Dawes]Meh.

"age differences never bother me unless it's obvious the woman is just a gold digger"
Uh, men can be gold diggers, too. I don't even have anything else to say. I'm too flabbergasted.
I do find my stomach
I do find my stomach turning whenever I see ERW with Marilyn Manson, but it's not because of the age gap. I mean, aren't we being a bit hypocritical about the "nearly 20 year old difference", while blissfully ignoring the age differences between lesbian celebrity couples like Cherry Jones-Sarah Paulson, Fiona Shaw-Saffron Burrows, or even our very iconic Ellen-Portia? Or are we allowed to date older people only once we cross the 30-yr threshold?
Double Standard?
Whatever Ms. Snarker thinks of ERW, at 20 years old, she is a woman, not a girl. She has shown real maturity in her performances, and is a refreshing change from all those other young women in Hollywood who can't seem to stay out of trouble.
I don't get the outrage over her change in fashion, even if she is dressing to impress her partner. What's the big deal? People get pleasure out of doing things that please their companions; that's part of the nature of being in a relationship. As long as it's not criminal, as long as there's no evidence of physical or mental abuse, what's wrong with her emulating another person's style? And, by the way, Dita is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.
I think Ms. Snarker's problem is not age difference, it's that ERW is dating an older MAN. What about Ellen DeGeneres, or Cherry Jones? I jumped over to IMDB, and Ellen is 15 years older than Portia. Cherry is 18 years older than Sarah Paulson. Does Ms. Snarker mind those relationships? What about Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher?
Once you reach 18, you're an adult in this society, and, unless you prove you're not up to it, you should be given the respect that goes along with that.

I have to
respectfully disagree with your accusation. I don't care how much one has experienced or how "mature" they are -- 20 years old is still extremely young, especially to be dating someone who is 40. I look back to when I was 20 and even though I had been living on my own for two years, had experienced a lot of life and considered myself to be very mature, I was still so young in many ways. I find that I have changed and grown up so much in just the three years since then. And just because someone isn't drinking, doing drugs and getting into other kinds of trouble doesn't mean they aren't still incredibly young. Just in terms of cognitive and intellectual development, 20 and 39 are worlds apart. Granted there are some people who never really mature no matter how old they get, but age really does change most people. I personally don't understand why someone who is 39 would want to date someone who can't even legally drink yet. If Evan were dating a 39 year old woman, I would find something wrong with that as well.
Comparing this to Portia and Ellen is a bad analogy. Portia is 35 years old, and her and Ellen have more equality in terms of life experience and maturity. My mom and stepdad are 11 years apart in age and I have seen how the older you get, the less significant age differences become.
18 may be considered legally an adult, but it certainly doesn't make you equally responsible and mature as any other adult. It's not like once you cross that line you are magically capable of making good decisions and being intellecutally on par with someone twice your age.
As for the style emulation, I also find it somewhat disturbing. I'm not saying that Dita isn't someone that is worth emulating -- she is quite classy and beautiful. I think the take away point was that it might be cause for concern when a young woman transforms herself to fit her partner's fetishized archetype. Not that we know what is going on in their relationship. If that is the style that Evan likes and chose on her own, more power to her. But it would be very distressing if what we are seeing is a talented beautiful young woman allowing herself to be molded according to someone else's desires. That is not very empowering.
You know... Life ain't that simple.
Heya,
You're acting as if there's this age line people need to cross before they can date someone significantly older than themselves.
From the time I was about 13-14, I grew up with a stepfather who is only 6 years older than I am. My mother is 20 years older than him... He started seeing her when he was 19-20, and she was 39-40. His parents were shocked at first, and even offered him a round the world trip so he could think things over, thinking he might change his mind... but he persisted and eventually they came to accept and love my mother (and her two teenaged at the time daughters) as part of their family. Eventually my mum and step-father married, and they've been together ever since.
Clearly, my stepfather was mature enough at age 19 for such a relationship... Not only living with a woman 20 years older, but also taking responsibility for her two children as well. So maybe my view is skewed, but I still say it's not that simple.

ummm..
Sarah Paulson and Portia are both in their 30's... You don't think that has any weight to the situation at all? You think it's the same situation for a 32 year old to be dating a 48 year old than for somebody barely out of their teens to be dating some middle-aged man?
I'm 22 and let me tell you, if I started dating a 42-year-old, my parents (let alone all my friends and family) would freak the hell out and have some serious words to say about that.
I read in Nylon magazine and
I don't mind them...
I don know if there's anything...
...wrong with any of it. You know, she's twenty. She started off when she was really young and she's had the same image all along. Look at the number of young women who's images have changed dramaticaly as they've matured... we could point out Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and a number of others - all of them have grown up and into different styles and images. At least she's not hanging around clubs drunk off her face and hanging out of her clothes. It seems to be a pretty healthy relationship by alot of standards.
Besides, I think it says more about MM than it does about either ERW or DvT, that he has a type and that both these women are of that same type, the whole old-school glamour thing. Also, it's a pretty fair point that there are a number of relationships in which one of the partners is significantly older than the other - I've dated a woman about 18 years my senior and that relationship was as valid as any I've had with a woman my age.
She's 20, for f**k sake!
She is not exactly a fullgrown woman. I knew next to NOTHING when I was 20. So the fact that she's become Dita Von Tease is unsettling.
" People get pleasure out of doing things that please their companions; that's part of the nature of being in a relationship."
HallyB, there is "pleasing a partner", and there is turning oneself into someone completely different for them. Especielly if the one doing the changing is the younger and less powerful partner. Stepford wification?!
This is pretty endemic in the celebrity world: the most creepy example being Katie & Tom Cruise.
Lets hope its a rebellious phase, a late developer.
Luckily this isn't going to last, I guarantee it. How many of you out there got involved with someone at 20 and stayed past...say 5 years?
agree 100 %
for example: Katie went from jeans to dresses in which you could imagine the queen if I point out just the most obvious.
And I have to add - it's not the age difference that bothers me with evan and marilyn, it's the fact that she's only 20. I have no problem with 30 and 40 or 40 and 50 or even 35 and 50 (ellen and portia?), but she seems too young for a personality makeover. It just looks like she changed who she is to fit in his picture. I know I can be wrong and she just found herself, but I'd be more comfortable if she were older...
Hmmm
Am I the only person not
Am I the only person not totally disturbed by this relationship? I love Evan, have done for years, and I actually really like Marilyn. I will admit that we probably didn't need to see them simulating sex in that video, but that's more my sensitive nature than anything :P, but the relationship itself does not offend me.
But anyway, she's 20 and she's trying to find herself, if that means she wants to change her style or whatever that is fine. What 20 year old doesn't try to change things up a bit? And Marilyn/Brian is a very intelligent, and very cool guy. Sure I'd rather Evan was dating, well, me, but that ain't gonna happen. Let her have her fun however she wants while she can. I don't think it's submission.
And hey! If she's gonna be looking like that, then I have no qualms at all!
here, here!
people just need to stop being so damned judgemental & let people live their lives, no matter how they chose to do so. i mean, c'mon - we lesbians have dealt with enough prejudice from bigoted, insensitive jerks in the world & should know better than to further the cycle of any kind of intolerance. & who cares about the age difference? it's not like she's 12, for crying out loud. we all have a lot of learning to do, at any age. i've always believed that age & maturity are subjective.
so, HUSH & let them have their cake, & eat it too.
Respect
oh evan
I like it.
I like it.

live for lust die for love
I might be wrong; but, why
I might be wrong; but, why do all of Marilyn's S.O.s look alike?
It's almost as if he seeks the same type of women (as far as style is concerned). Rose. Dita. Now it looks like he's transformed his new woman into his dream girl.
It almost seems like he picked Evan because she may have the same type of personality as Rose.
I heard that he came to Hollywood in order to meed Rose McGowan. I wonder if he just hasn't gotten over her.
If anything Dita was Rose 2.0 and Evan is Rose 3.0
As far as age is concerned; maybe marilyn isn't dating her for her maturity.
Dita Von Teese is hotter
Dita Von Teese is hotter than ERW will ever be.
and personally, if one of my twenty-year-old friends starting dating a nearly forty-year-old, holy f*ck, would pretty much everyone freak out.
I like them older...
IM 21 and I would do Madonna whos almost 50......ahh...if only.
xx
JUST SHUG.
Ditto
Madonna is still incredibly hot...
And I would SO date Angelina Jolie even she was in her 70s! :D
Oooooh, I love a bit of cake. Oooooh, cake. Oooooh, cake. Cake. Cake. Cake. Cake. I'm just one of these people. I come home and I need a piece of cake. [Marjorie Dawes]
Creepy
It's not their relationship (I admit the twins comment is strange) or even the age gap that creeps me out. It's the fact that so many Hollywood and even regular women change themselves completely for a man Even right down to their personality. If you have to change everything about you to please your partner, then you may need another partner because obviously the one you are with is not in love with the real you.
"I believe all Americans who believe in freedom, tolerance and human rights have a responsibility to oppose bigotry and prejudice based on sexual orientation. "-Coretta Scott King
I totally agree.
That's seriously F***ed up.
Dita Von Teese is great at what she does and she looks gorgeous... But Evan changin herself to be like Dita for her guy's image? Nah. That's weird. I don't think you can get much more different than the older photo of Evan and the Dita Von Teese tribute show that is the other pic.
As for the age difference, that's not disgusting at all, she's an adult....
horror ...
Girls. Girls. Girls.
:\
ewww
WHY??? this crap is wrong on so many levels..

GOD made men then He had a better idea girls.I believe I've heard
Judgmental much?
Woah... is it just me or are 'we' being a little judgmental here? Whatever happened to adult personal choices? People change over time (Evan was under 18 then and now she's a 20yo adult). And about her 'turning' into Dita, well Ms. Von Teese looks damn good, so what's wrong with being inspired? And guess what, Mr. Manson and Ms. Wood might actually just really like each other's company. Age's just a number. I don't see what's wrong with this whole thing.Judge ..mental... do you see what I did there??
"As much as I appreciate everyone's right to look how they want and as much as I know Marilyn's prince of the goths act is all for show, I can't help but be disturbed by Evan's willingness to mold herself so completely Dita's likeness. I mean, a few years ago she looked like this."
The photo below this comment is a promo shot which wouldn't reflect her own personal fashion or taste but even if it did, she was probably 16 or 17 when it was taken. I don't know about you but I didn't have much personal style when I was that age, its quite common in my experience for a person to embrace a different style when they are a bit more sure of who they are, although maybe not to this extent but it does happen. I don't really see what the big deal is, if Marilyn was a woman I don't think there would be too many people complaining about how disgusting it is. Its a little insulting to ERW that most people are assuming she is this little girl who is being manipulated and has no personality of her own. She obviously likes this style and Marilyn or she wouldn't be with him.
Quite a judgmental bunch arnt we, its a good thing lesbians don't have to put up with that kind of narrow minded thinking everyday...oh wait , we do!
Eww is right.
I have to put my agreement down here on the gross age difference. This is just my opinion - and like arseholes, everyone has one - more than 10 years is just creepy I don't care who you are or your level of fame. Creepy. Ewww.
Daddy issues? A severe need to feel 'different' from the norm? WTF?
ehhhhhh
i totally agree. it's utterly creepy and ugh and disturbing and all.
it's not so nice to see girls willing to totally turn into somebody else depending on who they're dating. ummm.
and hell yeah!! are all of her friends blind or what??? i don't know, family members maybe????
Maybe i should give Rachel my sister's cell, she's an amazing psychologist...
