Erykah Badu brings us a "New Amerykah"

Can't a neo-soul goddess catch a break? The music business, a notoriously fickle and unfaithful lover, tends to recycle and downright discard them with alarming ease. They'll come into our collective conscience like a white hot flash of funk and then, poof, they're gone off our radar. Whether by their own doing or the industry's capricious nature, or possibly both, their absence leaves us all wondering and wandering. Who next will delight us with a groove so irresistible, a spirit so exultant? But sometimes, if we're lucky, poof, they're back.

Yes, Erykah Badu is back. After arriving on the scene 11 years ago spinning her lessons in Baduizm, the neo-soul singer is set to release her first new album in five years, New Amerykah. OK, how cool is that album cover? The CD will hit store shelves Feb. 26. You can hear its first single, "Honey," streaming on her official website.

While Badu first became known for her imposing and immaculate head wraps, she is now all about the afro. Which, I've got to say, I love. Fierce, girl, fierce. But the glasses, well, they're another story. Is there even glass in there? Are they goggles? Whatever, at least she didn't re-emerge dressed as a clown like some of her contemporaries. Not that I'm naming names — cough, Lauryn Hill, cough — or anything.

I saw Erykah perform at one of the Lilith Fair shows (anyone remember those? hello, you can't all be that young), and a friend commented mid-performance that she had perfected baby-making music. To which we all laughed because, even if we were so inclined, there were no men within a 12-mile radius of the stadium. And then someone brought up turkey basters and, well, that's another story for another day.

But Erykah was fantastic, her voice like impassioned silk. But there was always more to her than mere bump and grind. In her introspective lyrics was a passion for the wider world. So now, all these years later, I'm excited to hear what she has to say about the state of Amerykah today. And if you just can't wait, take a listen to "The Healer" off her new album (set to still shots). The song's grade school beats and child-like chants are oddly hypnotic. Reboot, refresh, restart, indeed.

Finally!

I just have too say that cover and the name of the album is absolutely wonderful! Even if she wasn't as unbelivably incredible as she really is, I would buy the cd just to put it up on the wall as art!

ON AND ON!

I'm so excited that Erykah Badu is back, i've missed her funk. I still remember chillin out to "On and On", " Other side of the game" back in the day... ah those days.

That Thing You (Ba)du

New Amerkyah was definitely on my list of releases that I'm most looking forward to this year. I've been a fan of Badu since I first heard "On & On." She's like the epitome of cool to me...her music, her style and even her personal relationships (Common and Andre 3000 are like two of the coolest men on the planet).

I'm a little disappointed in the first single, "Honey"...Badu's contribution is great, but the production leaves a little to be desired. I've definitely heard much better work from 9th Wonder. There's a remix of the song done by S1 of the Strange Fruit Project that's really incredible, though...

Frickin' Sweet Beats Blastin' Back!

I am so psyched about Erykah's new album. It drops the day before I fly back to New Orleans, so I get to listen to it the whole 20 hour flight.

The Healer is awesome!

"We were programed. Wake up! We missed you!"

Couldn't have said it better myself. Welcome back, Badu!

This is excitin' news

Ms. Badu is a lyrical genius, and what a soulful voice she has. I still listen to her music anytime I need a pick me up. Right now her performance at the Bob Marley tribute done a few years ago is playing in the background as I type. She's truly talented and it's great to hear that she's finally returning. I foresee nothing but success. Thanks for the update.

Will blog for food!

Erykah

The style of artwork on the album cover seemed familiar to me, so I went and looked for the Earth, Wind and Fire album...Last Days and Times.

What do you think?  Not to date myself, but I do remember the 70's...

There is an O'Jays album

There is an O'Jays album cover that I think her album cover is inspired from. It was densly illustrated with political images through out it. I loved album coevers like this where you can look at it over and over and find new things. I guess I've dated myself as well. Whatever, it was aparto f my mother's record collection and I'm so glad it was.
