Disney shows us the beautiful world of "The Princess and the Frog"

Sometimes, when you wish upon a star you get a really gorgeous movie in return. A rough cut of the first five minutes of the new Disney animated film The Princess and the Frog has been released online. The movie is set in New Orleans and features Disney’s first black princess, Tiana (voiced by Dreamgirls star Anika Noni Rose).

The musical is done in lush hand-drawn 2-D in the tradition of Disney’s other classic princess films like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. Some of the animation in the clip is unfinished, but it sets the mood right away. Take a look:

Based on the fairy tale by the same name, it follows Tiana as she encounters a frog purporting to be a prince who asks for a kiss to break the amphibious spell. The previously released trailer reveals a key plot point. But instead of turning him into a Prince, the kiss turns her into a little green hopper as well.

Now I’ve had my reservations about the story in the past. I mean, it’s wonderful for them to create the first black princess, but then why make her into a frog for most of the film? Still the first few minutes are enchanting enough for me to give the film the benefit of the doubt. Plus, you can tell the animators went all-out to create the rich, multi-cultural backdrop of the Big Easy.

My only concern now? I’m a little worried for Tiana’s parents (voiced by Oprah Winfrey and Terrence Howard). The bulk of the movie is set later, when Tiana is older and an aspiring chef. Given Disney’s track record on letting loving parents live, I sense I should bring some Kleenex. I saw Bambi, you can’t fool me.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to make that wish with Princess Tiana and buy your ticket when the movie premieres Dec. 11?

I CANT WAIT TO SEE IT! :D

I CANT WAIT TO SEE IT! :D

I absolutely adore 2-d disney films. I really cant wait to see this! And its on my brother's birthday too!

Finally! young black girls out there have some sort of disney princess to pretend they are just as much as the other gorgeous princesses. I aways pretended I was pocahontas when I was younger because she was the only princess closest to being black  :P

Yay! yay! yay! i just want to imagine being a kid again and watch this... oh god... i hope its epic!

It will be even more epic if she decides to dump the frog prince and go out with the maid or something... but a lesbian disney princess isin't in the card just yet ;)

Oh I just read that she's a frog for ahlf the entire movie. Hmmm.. Weird. Im going to try and watch this with the mind of a little girl, not an adult othwerwise i will be nitpicking at every sexist, streotypical and rascit thing that may be shown. I just want to see how the film will turn out

Tiana's parents

Defintiely, seeing both of her parents alive and well made me think "Uh-oh." Disney does not treat parents very well, especially happy ones. Well, I'm very excitied to see it, so I guess I'll find out! And I love Anika Noni Rose, so I definitely won't pass this up.

I'm so glad that Disney is

I'm so glad that Disney is getting back to the classic style. I have nothing against pixar and computer animation but they just don't have the pull that the old-style movies did!

Well, im kind of

Well, im kind of disappointed since the first black princess is a frog. It pissed me off the first time i saw the trailer. But hey, at least there is a black princess.

I'm skeptical...

... but I'll go see it to demonstrate that it's an important value for young children to see faces that look like their own at least SOME of the time. (Damn, is this 2009 and we are still talking about the 'first black' anything? Geez. It's about time).

Do not judge, unless you want to be judged...

I know, right?

You said it! It's hard to believe it's taken this long...and sadly there are many firsts still to come.

I'm with you; I have a lot of doubts about this film, but I'm definitely going to see it.

Aw, I can't wait to see it,

Aw, I can't wait to see it, it's beautifully done and the story seems so cute! I'm counting down till I can see it :D

Frog is awesome, 2D is awesome

I think this movie would have been a little lackluster without the twist. And i am so damn happy for a non-pixar, non-3D animation at this point i'm practicaly praying this will bring back 2D film popularity.

Seriously i'll take anything but another cookie-cutter 'guy loses what's important to him because of his personality quirk! goes on adventure and reinvents himself, coming through for his friends in the end to save the day!' Pixar film. -__-

I Will See This Film But...

I'm not a die hard Disney fan nor a fan of princess stories. Sorry. I will be seeing it b/c I know there are some black girls who dreamt of this long overdue  black princess story.  I'm supporting their fairytale dream.

I'm going to go to the movie

I'm going to go to the movie with the intent to enjoy it :) I'm looking forward to a bit of Disney music and animation nostalgia.

I have to say though, the young white girl looks startlingly like Darla from Cats Don't Dance. She treats animals the same way too XD

jess.'s picture

Darla

I thought the exact same thing when I saw her!

But yes I'm looking forward to this movie, I'm excited for a 2D Disney princess movie :)

RE: Darla.

I agree with the comment that a character looks like Darla. "Big and Loud". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC82RLVdcsY

When younger, I use to laugh constantly at the scene where Darla is rolling on the table slowly. Hahaha.

i'll probably wait

till it comes out on dvd and then watch and cry when the deaths happen. its a 2d disney film its inevitable.  and ill probably have to make myself watch the sad/scary parts. this is coming from the same person that couldn't watch beauty and the beast when the wolves are attacking the beast. i felt so bad for him

sweetiedarlinmia's picture

I'm going

I would love to say that I'm not too keen on the Disney Princess thing but that would deny my intense love of the Little Mermaid. That said, I will certainly be going. Even with it's flaws (which I'm sure there will be and I will address when I see them), it's important that this is the first time I'll see a Disney Princess that looks like me. So, I'll be there on opening day to make sure its gets the revenue so they don't make Tiana the first and the last of Disney Princesses that reflect the diversity of our world.

YEAH! So pretty. I cannot

YEAH! So pretty. I really like the song and vocals at the beginning; hopefully there is a full song released. I cannot wait for the movie. I had commented on my thread of the movie as well as a previous AE The Princess and the Frog article. I will watch it like 20 million times especially if I enjoy it.

Not too bothered

by the fact that the first black Disney "princess" is black.  I think that since they introduce the character as black and then turn her into a frog, the kids are gonna keep the image of  a postive black person (even if she is a frog most of the time) in their minds.

I don't get it

She's an aspiring chef and a princess?

What I love is that

What I love is that apparently the bad guy is some sort of insanely cliche caricature of a pimp:

Oh, I'm sorry, he's actually supposed to be a "witch doctor" - muuuuch better!

Latrice's picture

I'm definetly

going to see that when it comes into theaters. I'm so excited...

it does suck how there's been so much controversy about the film. honestly they had no way of pleasing everybody. Be it over her name, or the fact that the prince is white [[when he is actually a human]], or what have you. Hopefully the film will be good because it does look intersting and i hope it recieves the credit it's due.... whatever that may be.... cuz either of the way it's a big thing and it's gonna get a lot of hype.

Ciji's picture

I'm gonna watch

Me and  my daughter are definetly going to watch this.  I know she will be excited to see a black princess.  She loves all the princess, but i am happy they are having a black princess.  Soon as they get in the swing of that maybe some mixed princess could come.  My daughter is mixed.

LiveFree's picture

i think it's good that

i think it's good that disney finally has a movie with a black female star, but does she have to be a "princess" fer christ's sake???  why couldn't she be a pirate, or a magician, or a mad scientist, or an astronaut, or a million other things?   it seems that the (mostly) men who write and produce these things still can not conceive of females existing anywhere outside the bedroom or the kitchen.  it's not just disney; if you look at almost any animated feature, or almost any non-"chick-flick" movie, females are virtually non-existant, and where they do exist, they are in very stereotypical roles.

I really really cant wait. I

I really really cant wait. I love classic disney movies, non of this pixar 3-d shite.

I get to watch the princess singing and dancing and talking to her beloveth animal friends once again, there will be tears and laguhters and little twists and beautiful animation and evil villains! XD

Me, a femme? I dont know what you're talking about >__>

(ahh the villain is black too!)

I am SO bringing my little sister to this.

I agre with you Live, but it cant please everyone. I havethe feeling that even if the black female hero of the story was given a different role that wasn't about beinga princess (say a pirate or a villain) people will probably say "what, a black princess isin't good then? why cant she be a princess like the other princesses? cant black women be pricnesses then? only good enough to be a villain?" or some other thing like that. Cant please everyone =/

Mom and Dad

Can't help but jump in here...

We've seen preview screenings, and Mom makes it all the way through the movie. There is one very sad onscreen death, but it's not her dad. Sorry for the minor spoilers.  For a full report, go here and here, where I posted a review (spoilers optional). In general, Tiana has goals and aspirations and is the least princess-y princess Disney has had.  I actually kinda felt sorry for her since she has to work sooo hard and all Aurora had to do was fall asleep!  Definitely worth the viewing.

Charlotte, the little girl, isn't going to be the only character that looks familiar.  The Giant from Mickey in the Beanstalk is in there, and also Nathaniel from Enchanted has a total copy in this film.

And Naveen, the prince, is not white, he is from Maldonia, a fictional country, so who knows.  Maybe everyone's talking about his features which are admittedly not African.  I think everyone will be all right with him overall.  Well, most 5-year-old girls.

It's funny I was reading this now because I was just at Gay Days at Disneyland wondering how long it would take Disney to make a same-sex fairy tale movie.  I'm not holding my breath or anything!

Viorica's picture

I'm pretty sure the dad's

I'm pretty sure the dad's doomed. Loving parent + dream-inspiring words = doom.

I'm not entirely sold on the movie yet. The animation looks good, but I'm still irritated that they chose to use a Western folktale rather than an African one, and the fact that she spends most of the film as a frog . . . well, we'll see.

Agreed

I'm also irked that they're using a western folktale.  It is important to remember that there are worlds beyond Europe and the USA, all equally valid.  Africa has a rich history of oral tradition; there have to be thousands of great stories there for use.  It would be great to see cultures that have historically been seen as inferior by the West finally claim their rightful legitimacy.
Viorica's picture

Exactly!

Mulan was based on a Chinese story; Pochahontas was based, however loosely, on a real Native American woman. Why couldn't they make a movie based on the Anansi folktales or "The One-Handed Girl?" The latter seems tailor-made for a Disney Princess.

INITIALLY SKEPTICAL,BUT I WILL SEE IT JUST TO BE SUPPORTIVE

wow. yes. one of the first reasons why i initially chose not to see this movie was because they made the mistake of trying to squeeze her story into the same western mold that has been used misused and worn out for years. then, if that wasnt bad enough, they actually tried to tell the story in Early New Orleans and include aspects of black life in The Orleans with a sunny dispostion.

I felt like they should have atleast attempted to stay true to some of what would have occured at the time (obviously leaving OUT gory details.) and in some way still finding a way to allow girls of today to identify with the character.

one way could have been by actually making the girl's parents (either mom or dad) be royalty ON THE AFRICAN CONTINENT, AND MIGRATED TO AMERICA FOR SOME REASON OR ANOTHER. that way she can realize that she is a true princess or something like that. lol,

BUT, I DECIDED I WOULD GO AND SEE IT AT LEAST TO SUPPORT IT AND MAYBE I WILL GET OVER MY INITIALDISPOSSION. hopefully

aksala's picture

so. Freakin'. EXCITED!

I've been lookin' forward to this for at least a year.  I'm taking my little sister to see it in New Orleans.  =)  The animation looks phenomenal.  I'm a little worried about that lil'  "Remember, Tiana..." speech Dad gave.  We all know that's code for an untimely parental death in the land of Disney.  But.  Whatever.  If I could find some Princess Tiana gear ... me and my sister would be decked out like the stans that we are!

It's about damn time, Disney.
