Charlize Theron is the invisible woman in "Hancock"I think, a few hold outs aside, we can all agree that Charlize Theron is a very attractive woman. Just in case you’re one of those “I need empirical evidence”-people, I give you exhibit A.:
She is also an intelligent, talented and successful woman. (Um, hello, Oscar.) That said, you’d think any movie studio would be happy to have her in their film – thrilled even. In fact, the very sight of her is probably enough to make any marketing department erupt with screams of glee. So then why is she all but missing for the marketing for her new misanthropic superhero film Hancock?
She’s not on the poster. She’s barely in the official trailer. She’s only in a couple of the TV spots – and even then just for split seconds. We see Will Smith. We see a lot of Will Smith. Will Smith flying while drunk, Will Smith breaking stuff, Will Smith being cranky. We also see Jason Bateman who we gather is the unhappy superhero’s publicist. But Charlize? It’s like she is the invisible woman.
(Possible spoilers ahead. Proceed with caution.) What makes it all the more perplexing is that Charlize does not have a small part in the film. In fact, her character is involved in a significant twist toward the end of the movie. It seems for once, the marketers decided to hold back.
As Sony marketing executive Val Van Galder told the Los Angeles Times: “There are so few surprises in summer movies that we made a strategic decision to keep Charlize out of sight. Trust me, there is a big surprise in the film and when it happens, you hear an audible gasp from the audience. It’s a fun secret and to keep it fun, we decided to leave it unexplored in the trailer. It’s a lot better to maintain the mystery of what Charlize is up to.” Now I applaud not giving too much away (I hate it when the trailer shows all the funniest, flashiest, most fantastic parts), but there is also such a thing as holding too much back. Like, say, making it look like someone isn’t even in the film at all. And for a movie whose core audience looks to be teenage boys and young men, don’t you think showing Charlize would help draw an audience? Heck, she might have even expanded the audience. Just off the top of my head, she could bring in – oh, I don’t know – us lesbians. Just a thought.

Oh isn't that what you
Oh isn't that what you wrote? Someday I'm going to read a persons blog all the way through before replying. Sorry.
Besides what I wrote was careless not rude to say it was rude is just rude and careless.

nice...NOT!
thanks so much for that "§$%& and only removing the actual spoiler (hello moderator) doesn't fix the problem if you leave the HUGE HINT of "yeah its reindeer games" (which gave it all away to me).
thanks so much §$%&/
as for charlize not being in the trailer etc. I don't get that either. she is famous, beautiful and a great actress. she is just as much pull (for a different audience) as Will Smith is. Interesting marketing choice.
For me personally it doesn't make a difference cos I knew she was in it and her and Will Smith's presence in the film are enough to make me go and see it ;)

First I cannot believe
First I cannot believe anyone actually wants to see this movie second I saw this plot twist coming a million miles away don't get mad at me for not being able to figure it out for yourself. Don't be rude! So I made a mistake? Big Deal! We all make mistakes.
Oh and there is a bigger plot twist then my little spoiler, but don't worry I won't tell.

Seriously..
The movie definitely looks interesting enough that I was considering seeing it, but you had me at Charlize. If you want to put lesbian asses in the seats, there's your answer. And by the way, Sony marketing guy, great plan and all but you pretty much ruin the 'surprise' when you make a statement to the newspaper.

I've seen the trailer twice and until this post, didn't even know she was in the film! I'm with you...I hate it when trailers and pr for the film gives tooo much away, but what gives with keeping mum on Charlize??
Thanks for the post!
If you're not trying to make something better, then as far as I can tell, you are just in the way.

Steady, girl. Big ol' swoon impending. Wow. Melt. Just wow.
I like surprises
I guess, I do like the fact that I do not know how she is the twist, and I really hate when they give away the movie in the tralier.
But word of mouth and the internet has peak my interest, and we know now that she is in the movie, which is an extra bonus.

Possible Spoiler/Mostly Speculation
****Possible Spoiler, Mostly Speculation****
This may or may not be a spoiler, so please look away if you want, but am I the only who thinks this twist is glaringly obvious, even from the trailer. In two or three clips, it heavily implies that she's the villian. Pair that with the info from the synopsis, which says something to the effect of "Hancock's life becomes more complicated when he falls for the wife of his new PR representative (the bateman character)." It just sort of screams of a cheap obvious twist to me. Maybe it's because I watch too many movies and in the habit of critiquing them in my classes, but I came to that conclusion fairly quickly.
Now maybe I'm completely wrong, at which point, I'll feel like an idiot for jumping to the wrong conclusion... but 9/10 says that's the twist.

thanks for the spoilers,
thanks for the spoilers, tvdork and nathiest - ruin the film why don't you!
from the trailers, all i get is a superhero who can't do his job, no where does it imply there is a villain, unless that's just me. i thought it was just a bad superhero turns good type of film. guess we're not all film students and can work this out from a tiny itty bitty trailer.
you guys deserve medals, take a bow (so we can kick you in the ass - in the most nicest way possible, of course).
as for charlize theron not being in the trailers, maybe it's cos will smith is the star of the film, i dunno, again it just looks that way to me.
to be perfectly honest, when i see a movie trailer i think, wow that looks good, or wow that looks crap, i don't think about how the film is going to end, i thought that was a pretty good reason to actually go see the film instead of hypothesising...
*shrugs* us simple people...
I don't care
I don't know what everyone else has seen, but the trailers that I've seen on t.v. all have Charlize Theron not only in it, but they've spoiled the movie for me all together.
And to tvdork, I admire that you put up your "possible spoiler" and then used your opinion. As friends have always told me, "If I tell you spoiler ahead, and you still scroll down, you can't blame anyone else but yourself.
To the first poster, puting the header spoiler in was wrong but it was also wrong to bitch you out hours later. Others have done it and it needs to stop.
Sometimes I really wonder about these people. . .
Oh my...
w00t I was wrong about this movie!
BRILLIANT
SMART
FUNNY
SHOCKING
SURPRISINGLY ROMANTIC
and again
BRILLIANT!
This movie starts off as an atypical rock'em sock'em action comedy, but soon turns and twist into a brilliant, smart, socking, funny, and surprisingly romantic summer flick that you'll soon want to see again and again. Brilliant!

I just saw Hancock and I
I just saw Hancock and I really liked it and I'm really glad that they didn't let on that she had a major role in the film. It made the movie all that better for me.
**Sort of spoilery but not really any way you've been warned**
If someone's readnig this thread odds are they already are clued in, but I have to say the best way to see this is to just think she's a minor character at first.

Good strategy.
Just saw the movie. Pretty damn good.
if they included any more of Charlize (like they did during the last week or so) they would have really ruined the movie.
And none of the spoilers in the comments are close.
I don't think the trailers give anything away. They're actually a little misleading.
Regardless of the trailers. Go see the movie.
