News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Can "Grey's Anatomy" get any more gay?

Heck, they're going to have to change the name to Gay's Anatomy if they keep this up. Aussie actress Melissa George is in final negotiations to star as the newest bisexual cast member on Grey's Anatomy. According to The Ausiello Files, George would play a new intern with an “open mind toward sexuality.”

The report also claims that George is “being groomed as a potential love interest for one of Grey's other two burgeoning bis, Callie (Sara Ramirez) or Erica (Brooke Smith).” Wait, what? Callica fans the world over are no doubt picking up the nearest heavy object and chucking it at their screens in protest.

While I love the idea of another queer character on Grey's, why make her the spoiler between Callie and Erica? Can't we have one happy, stable, non-pregnant female gay couple on television? Look Shonda Rhimes, if you won't do it for me then at least do it for the poor couple nicknamers out there who will have to work overtime after already giving us Callica. Have you no mercy?

If George looks familiar but you can't quite place her, imagine her kicking Jennifer Garner's ass as she did as double agent Lauren Reed on the third season of Alias. She has also squared off against vampires in the horror flick 30 Days of Night and spent time on the couch for the HBO psychotherapy drama In Treatment.

While there is no word yet on Melissa's character's name (sorry, nicknamers, no head start for you), some detail has come up about her role. Apparently she was originally slated just to be a patient, but Shonda liked the actress so much she changed her role to give it “more long-term potential.”

Melissa joins a slew of casting news on the show including the hiring of The L Word's Janina Gavankar and newcomer Brandon Scott as new interns, plus the announcement of Battlestar Galactica's Mary McDonnell appearance as a doctor for a multi-episode arc later in the season.

So, are you excited about more gay on Grey's? Do you like the idea of an all-female love triangle at Seattle Grace, or are you already planning you “Save Callica” petition as we speak? Discuss.

I just ordered 500 t-shirts with "Save Callica" on them.

ok first of all i LOVE your avatar!!^^ LOVE kelly clarkson!

second, can i get one of those shirts too! why oh why must they ruin Callica!? :(

betsys2003's picture

Um, no

They can't.  It's a soap opera.

Frankly, it would not be fair if they treated the girl-girl couple any differently than a boy-girl one.

I have to say, I'd rather them get broken up by another girl than what I expected, which was for one of them to leave for a guy.

But that said - really, FOUR bisexual doctors and NO gay ones?  Why couldn't they write the new doc specifically as a lesbian - she could still break them up.  I guess they read the GLAAD report and noticed that it's only cool to have gay men and bi women on tv.

lushbliss's picture

I fully agree.  They will

I fully agree.  They will probably have them go together for awhile (like everyone else) and then have this new girl come between them. I would be okay with, it would be annoying if they kept them together forever mushy mushy Uhaul etc etc. As long as they dont make it out to be some stupid cashmere mafia type deal Ill be fine with it, however I also fully agree that they should have just gone for the whole shabang and made the new character gay instead of bi.  Its kind of like..."youve gotten this far, push it!" haha

How come I never meet any hot bisexual doctors in the real world

Sounds more like Bi's Anatomy (but Gay's Anatomy is a better pun).

I think it's great. It shows a commitment to keeping queer women's visibility.

How come I never meet any hot bisexual doctors in the real world?

DON'T RUIN CALLICA!!!!

Ok I'm all for lesbians on TV, but please. DOn't have some chick come between Callica. Like, that's fishing for unnecessary drama that could make the show irritating. The only way it would be NOT irritating is if she was a ladderclimbing slore who tried to sleep with all the attendings to get more surgeries or something but please. If her purpose is to just be a slut then save it.

And her nickname is McWhore if she comes betwixt Callica. Grr. lol

I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.

Irritating, manufactured drama on Grey's?  Why, I can't even imagine such an unlikely thing.

LogLady's picture

Geez!!

I say the same thing on friday morning, where's my credit!!! (kidding kinda)

And since we're talking about hot bisexual doctors (sorta) the episode of house where 13 gets some play will be called 'lucky thirteen' hopefully that bodes well for her and not badly....

kennedyismyhero's picture

Wait a second...

I thought Papi  Janina Gavankar was supposed to be the new intern addition who had no qualms about sexuality?? I distinctly remember this because everyone and their mother was saying, "Of course they hired an ex-L Word actress to play gay, 'cause it's impossible to do unless you've done the lesbian show..."
lexiloumarie's picture

You're right, I googled and

You're right, I googled and Janina was hired after a casting call for an actress willing to kiss guys and girls.  Melissa was cast to specifically come between Callie and Erica. So depending on how they use them, we could potentially have two female couples on Gay's Grey's.

Save Callica!

I just need Callica to be happy, so hopefully these potential new bi/gay character will just be there to help Erica and Callie figure out their feelings for EACH OTHER and not try to come between them. I've already fallen so hard for Callica and I'd hate to have a stupid MerDer like situation happen with the two of them. Callica's better than that.

Shonda, we're counting on you girl, so please don't let us down.

WELL!  I am thinking that

WELL!  I am thinking that SG is going GAY!

Do we hear anyone complaining?

*silence*

No, didn't think so.

Jennifer Garner and Melissa George had this damn sexy chemistry and even in the outtakes of the season that MG was on, they would fake going at one another.  Oh if only.....

Alias Outtakes

OMG I forgot about that! *runs off to watch it*

oooh

Oooh I remember her from Alias, hard to forget! The one who got between Vaughn and Sydney. There seems to be a trend going on here....

you make it real for me

Nooo!

This is the actress who ruined Alias.

Melissa George

Was also a damn hot Valkyrie in a double episode of Charmed-a mighty fine episode for costumes alone!

She had her first big break in Aussie soap Home and Away as Angel and also played a small but significant part in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. I think she and Janina Gavankar would make a super hot couple in Grey's.

Gaya's picture

It's too much too expect from Grey's

I mean, this is the show that is notorious for none of it's romances lasting. all relationships on Grey's are bad ones! so i think it's no surprise that the Callica thing, as much as I personally love it, will endure against all odds, and all the other relationships on the show.... Personally, I think, or guess that it will go something like this: Callie's dad will be really pissed and thearten to cut her off and so she will leave Erica and go back to George, who will be turned on by the whole girl on girl action. When Callie was with George, they already implied that her father is a very wealthy republican, so i'm guessing they could go there. while i do hope that callica will stay together, i think its unrealistic, due to the unique charecter of Grey's Anatomy. I only hope that the relationship will last at least half a season, for our pleasure. and please, lets hope the relationship will play a larger part of the drama this season, not like the episode on thursday.

Sad news...

Reading this article didn't come as a shock to me. I was actually expecting it sooner rather than later. That still doesn't mean I'm not sad.

I enjoy Callie and Erica both separately and together. I guess the real thing that urks me is the fact that if they had hooked up and continued to stay together, it would have been a landmark for syndicated television in the USA. Currently we have no gay/lesbian couples that are part of the main cast in a show. Not guest-starting, but main cast! Does anyone else see a problem with this?

And you know what also get's me, Sara and Broke are normal looking, not model beautiful. Although I do find Sara extremely yummy! But I'm getting side tracked. My point was, as aesthetically pleasing as it is to see JB and Rachel Shelly on the L Word, I don't know one single lesbian that looks like them. I'm not saying there are not beautiful lesbians in this world; but come on! Callica just made it easier to believe that television was somewhat interested in portraying a couple you might really see if you were partying at the local dyke bar.

I don't even know why I'm bitching about this, I admitted I wasn't surprised. I guess it just would have been wonderful for someone to prove my pessimistic attitude wrong for a change. *Sigh*

I guess the only thing left now, is to guess who will chicken out first or if it will be both.

"I hate people, they hate me. So doesn't that classify as a healthy, functioning relationship?"

"Brothers & Sisters"

"Currently we have no gay/lesbian couples that are part of the main cast in a show. Not guest-starting, but main cast!"

What about those two guys who got married on "Brothers & Sisters"?  I have NO CLUE what the names are, as I don't watch the show...but didn't one of the 'brothers' marry some guy last season?  Is he not considered a main character?  I don't watch the show, so I don't really know....

Dearlylovedaimee's picture

Don't watch Brothers & Sisters either

But you are correct. The gay brother is married to a man. From what I gathered off of IMDb, the brother's husband is merely a guest star. So here we go again with a great opportunity wasted. Will it eventually happen, who knows! It's sad that I have to go to Spain to import my lesbian couples. Hospital Central has not 1 but 3 lesbians officially part of the cast and I believe that Los Hombres de Paco is adding Laura Sanchez (Pepa) to their cast. Don't quote me on that but it's what I've heard. We seriously need to play catch up!

Benefit Of The Doubt

I'll give her a chance, just 'cause I've got a thing for hot Aussie actresses. I took a liking to Melissa George after sitting through the awful "thriller" Derailed -- a film which strained disbelief in many aspects, most notably the idea that Clive Owen would cheat on his smokin' hot wife Melissa George with Jen Aniston.

OMG!

I'm Callica shipper but I was sure they were gonna ruin it somehow, but I really liked Melissa George in Alias and I'm sure I'm gonna love her character(as long as she doesn't talk about men all episode, like some other characters) :) AND Mary McDonnell, I know she's old enough to be my mother but I have the biggest crush on her since the first season of BSG, I'm so happy that she gives me one more reason to watch Grey's Anatomy, now if only they would kill Meredith already, it could become one of my favorite shows :)
Brokendreams24's picture

Okay...... Normally

I'm not someone to reply, but I don't get what everyone is complaining about. At least it is not a guy coming in between them, that should count for something. Heck not one or two no.....three beautiful women "fighting" for love, lust or whatever, well count me in. If they should go there, then yay for them at least they are not treating the lesbian couple any differently than their straight ones. Drama all around that's "grey" for you. I almost stopped watching this show last season, but I guess they changed my mind for now.

wow

I absolutely loved melissa george in "in treatment". I'm not surprised shonda wanted to keep her.

i think it's cool they're

i think it's cool they're bringing in more gay characters but really not looking forward to some drawn out triangle thing for Callica by replacing Sloan with Melissa George.

by the way does anyone remember Melissa George from when she was Angel on Home & Away? She was my first celebrity girl crush, I was like 13 at the time.

was one of my first girl-crushes! I absolutely loved Melissa George on Home & Away! I never understood all the fuss my friends made about Shane/Dieter Brummer - for me it was all about Angel!

Melissa George and Jennifer

Melissa George and Jennifer Garner should've ditched what's-his-face altogether! I loved Melissa George when she was on Alias (at the beginning I hated her because of her character but I kind of blurred the line between reality and fiction there). Plus she was in The Amityville Horror and oh so good in 30 Days of Night and... yay! Of course I don't want her to break up Callica.

I was super excited when I

I was super excited when I read this on Friday!  MG was great on Alias, and everybody knows that a happy couple = no storyline/airtime on daytime/primetime soaps.  As a result, I'm all for this!  On a random sidenote...I really like saying "Grey's Gays!"

Melissa George on Greys

I agree that it's better to have another girl break up Erica and Callie then a guy.  And for that matter if it's going to be a girl, I'm not complaining if it's Melissa George!  I didn't mind her in Alias but wasn't she the lesbian nanny on Friends too?

I'm actually looking forward to this!

Callica First

I think the Callica storyline hasn't been explored so much yet and they haven't had any very serious relationship issue so I don't think this is a good season to introduce 3rd party.
