"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" coming to a theater near you — with a huge catchSo, let’s play a little game. What if I were to say there might be a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie? Oh my God, jumping up and down, squealing. What if I were to say Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t going to be in it? Disappointment, worry, though maybe hope if the other Scoobies were involved. What if I were to say none of the TV cast was included? Wait, what? What if I were to say Joss Whedon wasn’t even a part of it? Expletive deleted.
Now imagine those aren’t hypothetical questions and you have the strange reality facing every Buffy fan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the franchise could be in for a reboot minus all the parts we know and love. The new Buffy movie that would be a “remake or relaunch” à la the new Star Trek film. Weird, I’m struck with the sudden urge to stab something with a pointy object.
Director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, have held the rights to Buffy since the original 1992 movie starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry. They worked with Joss on the film and retained executive producer credits throughout the TV series. Now Kuzui has teamed with the producers behind the American remakes of Asian hits like The Ring and The Grudge, to “restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon.” Yeah, good luck with that. Anyone else feel stabbed in the gut?
Now, granted, the mythology that Joss created does say that into each generation a slayer is born. So, theoretically, a new film could follow a new slayer in another time and place. But, um, then it wouldn’t be Buffy the Vampire Slayer, would it? It would be Alice or Shontelle or Gabriella the Vampire Slayer. Also, um, not to get all technical again but that’s already been done, too. It was called Fray.
The article goes on to say the goal would be to “make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.” Hey, Buffy was pretty darn dark. She killed her boyfriend. She died. She came back. She saved the world, a lot. Also, did you meet Dark Willow? Hello, it’s in her name. Sheesh.
Apparently, all of the original film’s producers have been contacted except Joss. Though, Kuzui said she didn’t rule out his possible involvement in the future. She also told the Hollywood Reporter, “Everything has its moment. Every movie takes on a life at some point, and this seems like the moment to do this.”
Does it seem like the moment or did she see how much bank the new Enterprise crew made at the box office? Look, I have nothing against reimaginings when the original concept has grown stale or enough time has passed to warrant a reboot. But I have everything against reimagining something that isn’t broken or even old. And I’m darn right offended that they’d try it without Joss and any of the Scoobies.
I say we help Kuzui and company out and rename the film for them: Buffy the Craven Attempt to Make More Money From the Vampire Slayer. Sure, it’s long but at least it’s honest. So, what do you think of this new, Joss-free Buffy movie? Excited? Confused? Expletive deleted? Discuss. Submitted by on May 26, 2009 - 5:42pm. |

Update: Joss Speaks!
EW: What do you think about this Buffy movie they're making without you?
JOSS WHEDON: I hope it's cool.
Make of that what you will.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why I Don't Sleep Much: Dorothy Surrenders. Also, I'm an utter twit.
Yikes!
In other words, it would be a total flop like the Kristy Swanson-Luke Perry "Buffy" was. I mean, that movie was complete shit, and if Joss Whedon hadn't helmed the TV show, and had great characters with interesting story lines...well, the Kuzui's, or whatever their name is, wouldn't have a leg to stand on. All in all, this idea BLOWS.
If this does have anything to do with the new Star Trek, well, that movie is based on the crew being young. So, what, is Buffy going to be in Kindergarten??
------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry for the gravity...
I'd be open to it. Joss
I'd be open to it. Joss Whedon is brilliant and so was his creation but other people-writers/producers/directors put in their 2 cent to make Buffy as great as it is and I feel that it's pretty cool that Kuzui is looking to give another writer/artist a chance to be known.
For example... maybe the first scene can be of the Iraq war. The new slayer is a prisoner of war, then she gets her slayer powers, and escape. She then sees vampires popping out all over the sand due to so many deaths, they start attacking both American and Iraqi soldiers, does she do the right thing and try to save everyone or does she let the Iraqi soldiers die?
She meets her first member of the new scooby as a war buddy and the second would like the new Giles, an intelligence officer or whatever. She falls in love with the new Gile's daughter, pissing off the new Giles and he has to make the decision of whether to quit or not. I don't know, haha...
Between the Buffy movie news
My thought's exactly
Let's hope they don't actually go through with it. I can't believe they think this is a good idea and I don't see how it would make them so much money. Yes there are a lot of buffy fans but no true fan would EVER watch this trainwreck.
BLASPHEMY. That's all I have
BLASPHEMY.
That's all I have to say about this.

Can we burn down Hollywood?
Can we burn down Hollywood? Please?
Between this and Keanu Reeves trying to ruin every good idea ever made (Starring in 'Jekyl and Hyde'? Really? Goddamnit!), I'm convinced that Hollywood needs to be destroyed now.
100 bucks says that it turns out to be another 'Twilight'. And that is crap.
do. not. want.
um, no. Do not want. Especially when I can still get fresh Buffy comics every month. Try again later, like in 10 or 15 years when nostalgia has really had a chance to set in.
Ugh
My best friend was just telling me about this. As a huge Buffy fan I have to say that I don't like this at all.

Well....
I tend to be more open minded than others when it comes to drastic changes and something I like or love. For this reason the lack of the original cast doesn't really bother me. Lack of Joss Whedon on the other hand is a different matter, especially since the people behind this film are the people behind a very average film.
OMG! NO NO NO NO!
Not impressed at all how can
Meh
could work out, but my hopes for that are not high at all. fine i could do without buffy, and maybe some of the other cast, but without joss? the creator of all good in buffyverse? hmm, bad choice. if joss was doing a movie of buffy the next generation i would see it for sure. this time i don't know, probibly will watch it anyway, but not that excited about it thought.
http://ikkegoesblogging.blogspot.com/
no no and more no
being a die hard buffy fan i was uber excited about the prospect of a buffy movie. and now im just pretty much thinking they can shove it up their Kuzui! NO JOSS. NO DEAL.
I don't think NO is a strong enough word
um
To me this movie is probably going to bomb they dont have any orginal cast, No Joss, and these guys made the first Buffy movie which no offense was pretty bad so I hope its good but I doubt it will be brought up to expectations
WHY?!
why do they always do this? Making a "new and re-vamped"(pun intened) buffy film without any of the original cast that's just not right.
I just can't imagine someone esle playing willow or tara or any of the other characters.
So thanks but no thanks. It not even worth making without the original cast.
*sighs and shakes head sadly* im soooo dissapointed.
Love is when you don't want to go to sleep because reality is better than a dream.
NO NO NO NO NOOO
Ok no this cannot happen. When I stopped being in denial over the definite No of a Xena movie, (still kinda upset but there was only shred of hope I was clinging to anyway), I put my hopes into the possibility of my beloved Buffy comming to big screen.
THIS IS NOT WHAT I HAD IN MIND!!!.
Ok I can understand trying it without the scoobies.
Like it? HELL NO. Want it? No way. Accept it? definetly not.
But I can understand it.
BUT NO JOSS?!?! WHAT?!?!?! EXCUSE ME?!?
There just aren't words to do justice to the complete wrongness that is any type of Buffy remake without the genius that is Joss Whedon. It may just be me but I'll take my Buffy on dvd reruns and new comic installments anyday.
HELL NO TO A BUFFY MOVIE WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL TV CAST AND JOSS WHEDON!!!!!!!
*takes deep breaths* Ok rant over. Feels SLIGHTLY better.
Oh God.....Really???
Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!
For a minute I was so happy thinking 'yay a buffy film'. Then I read on.
I mean Really, the idea is absurd. Everyone has gotten so attached to the Series and even if they say the film will be different it's just gonna wreck it all.
I mean , come on people. Get an original idea that doesn't mean re-doing something that was brilliant and should not be tampered with!
What?
Is this fake gay news?? Please tell me it is. (Sorry, I am in deinal)

Bah..
I sure as hell hope so!
No Way!
Before Joss, we had Buffy the Movie, which suckedddddddd.
I don't trust them to make a good film. Unless it stars Eliza Dushku as Faith. Then yes, by all means.
I like men who have a future, and women who have a past.
Actually the Buffy movie
Actually the Buffy movie wasn't "before Joss" - it was still his script, even if the producers screwed it up.
--------
Oh Trixie - wouldn't it be wonderful flying above the clouds, shooting stars out of our matching vaginas.
Ummmm.... FAIL.
Furthermore, BtVS - (Joss + entire cast of hit show) = epic fail
And maybe I am doing a math paper at the moment, but this is still so very wrong.
Looks like another case of
lets see if this really has a chance in hell
With the Twilight and True Blood popularity.....its no wonder this pipe dream comes up again. It's a ridiculous idea without Joss.
.....But Kristy Swanson could play Joyce now.....NO!!!
Just NO! NO! I do not want :(
Buffy without the original cast and JW is not Buffy!
NO!
Umm.. How about pissed?
Ok So i was around 9 when the series ended and i was watching since season 5 which of course i wasn`t allowed to do because it was too `dark`or whatever. My point here is that I missed the whole middle of series like amazingness. Luckily that hasn't died much even years after it ended, so since it ended i've jumped on anything Buffy or Joss related including Dollhouse & Dr. Horrible's sing along blog & The Buffy Comics (obviosly). Because Joss WAS the show.
A movie without him is just wrong. It's horrid and terrible and how can they even think about doing a movie without the original cast? ARE THEY CRAZY? WE didn't BUY into the written on paper Buffy we didn't BUY into the written on paper version of Tara and Willow. We bought the actors and the performances and the characters that THEY made real. THIS will definitely not work. I'd rather be tied to damn chair with my eyes lids peeled off and a constant sting in them because of the inability to blink AND be forced to watch the ORIGINAL movie OVER AND OVER then watch this load of crap this film will no doubt be.
DAMN IT HOLLYWOOD. IS nothing sacred?
LAME.
A big fail to Kuzui. Though I agree that they could potentially make a movie franchise off a completely different slayer/different time/different place... they have to have JOSS to do it. Ridiculous that they aren't asking him. I think a Vampire Slayer movie franchise could be spectacular, IF Joss was behind it. Without him, it's all a whole bunch of fail.

Grr Argh
Blech.
BtVS without Joss Whedon? No. Just...no.
Meh.
Since I'll probably never forgive Jossy-boy for the complete toilet splash that was UPN!BtVS, I'd actually be *more* inclined to see a reboot he has nothing to do with.
On the other hand, I don't care very much about a reboot. Maybe if it looked cool. If not, WB!BtVS is enough for me.
Wow, did you really hate
Wow, did you really hate the 6th and 7th season that much?
--------
Oh Trixie - wouldn't it be wonderful flying above the clouds, shooting stars out of our matching vaginas.
Yes. I really did.
How come? I get that some
How come? I get that some people prefer the High School phase and the original scoobie gang, but to me it seemed that writing went downhill for season 5 and picked back up for season 7, with season 6 being the weakest Buffy season.
--------
Oh Trixie - wouldn't it be wonderful flying above the clouds, shooting stars out of our matching vaginas.
To me, s6 was poorly
To me, s6 was poorly written, contrived crap. The Scoobies were practically unrecognizable as the writers twisted the characters to suit the needs of the plot. That this was done in the service to a bunch of over-the-top angsty, joyless, boring, repetitive "storylines" made the character assassination all the more annoying and disheartening.
Also, the masturbatory Spike fantasy vibe didn't help matters. I didn't like the character much to begin with, and the hate just grew and grew the more it was allowed to devour the whole damn show.
And s7...wasn't a step up to me. Too much Spike, too much standing around talking about the stupid Big Bad, too much of the Scoobies not giving a flying crap about each other or much of anything else. "It's all about power." Shut up!
WE HAVE TO STOP THIS!
..... BtVS without Joss is NOTHING, NOTHING!!!, not to mention none of the series cast would be HORRIBLE, but i could bear it if JOSS were in it! ARRRGHHH!!!!
¬¬ !!!!!!
Who whating how with huh?
Not cool. Just not cool.
i know right
buffy is my favourite show! this will not end well. people will either hate it or they will think its a take off of twilight and argh! itll all go wrong! D: buffy is brilliant, without joss, this movie has very very little chance!
xoox
whos your favourite character?? dont you just adore will and tara???
wtf? why not? it wouldn't
How unfortunate. This is a
How unfortunate. This is a complete and total slap in the face to Buffy fans. We've been waiting for a film opportunity for, what? Oh, yeah, that's right - years. And now we get this. What are we supposed to do, jump and do cartwheels? Not likely. In fact, I'm thinkin' someone in Hollywood can just go and choke on Mr. Gordo parts at this point.
If this movie is made, and if it goes down in an epic flame of fury, what the series has built for itself isn't lost; the series will very much remain too poignant and significant to be undone in one box office bomb.
By no means am I happy about this, try as I may, but I may be able to ride on one glimmer of optimism as long as the writers/producers don't try to sell this using the title of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But seeing as Hollywood is Hollywood, I wouldn't be at all surprised, because they need some backing to get this thing to sell. And the last time I checked, the word "fair" goes out the door as soon as money signs seep their way into the process of thought.
It just wouldn't be Buffy
Expletive deleted!
They already did a Buffy movie, and then the show made it what it really was. This just makes me mad...I can imagine how diehard Star Trek fans may feel...I refuse to see this!!!! (Though maybe, just maybe, I'd see if it the cast is made up of super hot women...that could sway me...)
But I do agree with everyone who says it wouldn't be the same--I have a special place in my heart for Buffy (especially Willow and Tara), and nothing else can compare. Then again, perhaps even a movie with the original cast wouldn't be the same...you never know. Sometimes it's better to leave things be, but Hollywood would never think that way--not if more money can be made haha
uh. okay.
who are they trying to draw in??? unless there is some kind of miracle of cinema, where good work and art sumblimely supercedes the power-hungry marketing moguls (as in, oh i don't know... the tv show???), i don't see how the new movie doesn't offend the hordes of buffy fans who are the only people probably interested in watching anyway-- so... who the hell is gonna be the audience?
okay, that was convoluted, but i can't even believe they are trying to do this. save for a weird few (my one friend who loves the original movie), buffy is synonomous with joss. until he's dead, this is like writing a harry potter book sans jk.
and i'm not even a huge fan of the show!!! (don't kill me ladies, i'm a fan, just not an all-out, live or die for it one.) but i do recognize stupidity when it tries to make money in front of me.
boo.
synonymous. sorry. and
noooooooooooooo x 100
First reaction: Buffy movie?! HELL YEAH!
No Sarah Michelle Gellar: erm....... what?
NO TV cast? = No Alyson Hannigan: WHAT?! NO! NO! NO!
No JOss Whedon = *insert expletives of all languages!* NO NO NO NO NO!
This is just soooo bad..
It is just so wrong, it is like trying to make lemonade without anything but water!
Make that soul-less water. Ew.
