Don't call it a comeback: Britney and the VMAsWell, that was just wrong on every level. By now, you’ve probably watched, re-watched and texted your friends so they could watch the horror of the big Britney Spears MTV Video Music Awards comeback that wasn’t. For a supposed entertainment event, that was one of the more painful, more inexplicable and more unnecessary displays I’ve ever witnessed. But more than anything, it just made me sad.
If for some reason you missed it and your friends didn’t call to insist you watch it over and over again with them, consider yourself lucky ... until now. Britney Spears. “Gimme More.” VMAs 2007. You’ve been warned. Now, the easy joke here would be “Gimme Less” — a whole lot less. But there is nothing easy about seeing someone so young become such a sad spectacle. There is nothing easy about the desperation and delusion most likely at work here. Looking alternately scared, bored, dazed and in danger of toppling over, Britney was just going through the motions, a mere shadow of her former self, as she lazily lip-synched her way through her new single.
Reaction has been swift and brutal. When even the normally restrained Associated Press calls you “out-of-shape, out-of-touch” and says, “Somewhere, Kevin Federline is laughing,” things have gone horribly awry. Some of the more uncomfortable criticism has been about her weight. Clearly, Brit’s no longer the 18-year-old hard body of yesteryear. But then, who is? To be the mother of two and not have stretch marks and back fat would be the true anomaly. Had she worn an actual form-flattering costume instead of a BeDazzled bra and panties, it wouldn’t have raised nearly as much fuss.
Of course, the second-guessing, finger-pointing and feet-stomping has started already (she was distraught about Sarah Silverman’s planned jokes about her
Living in the vacuum of fame for nearly a decade can skew anyone’s perception. To survive and thrive, you either have to be incredibly smart yourself or surrounded by incredibly smart people. It’s clear from this embarrassing display that Britney is 0 for 2 on those counts. But even worse, she doesn’t have anyone around her she can trust. Someone who could catch a rehearsal and say, “Honey, you’re not ready. Let’s wait. And also, more fabric.” I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again because it bears repeating: People who love Britney Spears, please help her. Because, clearly, she can’t help herself.

I find the 'out-of-shape'
I find the 'out-of-shape' comments really disturbing. I mean look at her, she is skinnier than probably the vast majority of Western women. It's like the press won't be happy unless they can see her really starving herself, and they're determined to push her into that - God forbid, she should just be at a normal, healthy weight.
I don't see any stretch marks, either.
The performance was disappointing but I don't think it was terrible. It was just too blah and too much of a mediocre repetition of things she's done before. Plus the fact that she looked so bored and as if she didn't want to be there. If SHE'D had a little more enthusiasm about her own act, then maybe the rest of the audience would as well.
I think she can probably have a comeback if she really wants to, but at the moment it seems like she doesn't really want to. I don't know if she knows what she wants.
I've always disliked Sarah Silverman but now I think she's really scum, sorry to those who like her. There was nothing funny about the comments she made, they were just cruel and contemptible.
Silverman did her job
i can!
i liked it
i really liked the performance. britney is still hot in my opinion and the song was great even if she was lip-synching. i am a little apprehensive about posting the fact i liked it because so many other people seem to hate it but everyone's opinions matters. she seems to be in pretty good shape to me
Bart: Mom, am I a butch or a femme?
Marge: [with hand lifted] Honey, you can be anything you want to be.
I Concur
Despite everything she has put herself through.. one can only expect so much from her.
I mean, atleast she didn't stumble on the stage or her music stopped or anything technical going wrong.. she did an ok job of the whole thing. But I feel that she was nervous as hell, just watch her eye contact.
Her body is in good shape cause from what I was reading about her she had recently started to work out again which is a good sign of trying to tone up her body.. thank god she isn't skinny as hell like Nicole Richie [before she got preggy].
The show was supposed to be "magical" with Criss Angel doing illusions and tricks with her.. but apparently that was pulled at the last minute..
I just hope she gets her confidence back because it seems being in the media spotlight has kinda taken that away but I am willing to admit so has her mistakes in the past got in the way. So here's to hoping she will brush up better before her album hits.
Also, I didn't think "Gimme More" was a good idea to open the VMA's.. she could've done "Been A While".. That would've probably given her a better luck in performance and bring back her sexyness like she used to with "I'm A Slave 4 U".

I partially disagree...
Let's face it, Britney did not look prepared for the performance or happy to be there. As for her body...she's somewhat out of shape for dancing and certainly THAT
display of underwearcostume. That said, I think her body looked great for having had two babies and a nervous breakdown. As Dorothy noted, she or her people need to be smarter about how they package her in light of like...well EVERYTHING. More preparation and a more flattering costume would have gone a long way towards rehabbing her image.I was also
veryamused by Sarah's comments, but they were mostly mean spirited and obviously most of those comments didn't go over well with the audience. The fact is, I had to change the channel. Her shtick works better when those who are skewered on the point of her punch lines aren't RIGHT THERE. Mean isn't that funny...I agree.
I used to like Sarah Silverman, but she's really starting to lack tact and brains. Even Rosie and Kathy Griffin, comediennes known for crossing lines and irking people, wouldn't have stooped to what Sarah said. There's a difference between being witty and funny and being just plain rude and vile. I thought Sarah knew the difference...apparently she doesn't.
I didn't think she looked overweight either. She looked fine to me, in better shape than alot of women in this country are (her bod looks LEAGUES better than mine). However...she REALLY should have gone with something more form flattering.
I don't find the out of
I found the comments about
I found the comments about her body more than a little disturbing... although, I will grant that she probably shouldn't have worn the sparkly underwear. But I think her body looks great, and not just as a mother of 2... she's in better shape than most of us, I imagine.
That being said, my main thought while watching that was that she looked like it was her first time in heels -- which is how I look every time I find myself wearing those stileto things I admit. I kept thinking how it was lucky she had all those people around to catch her because it looked like she was going to tip over at any moment.
I was hoping for more,
Wow.
Someone needs to help her children, because they really cannot do anything for their little selves. I feel really bad for her kids. Clearly, she's not in any shape to look after herself, let alone two small ones.
I'm not the one to root for Britney Spears but if she can actually pull her act together and not take her kids down with her, then I'll be happy. And if not, then it'll just emphasizes all my past and current thoughts on her.
For the time being... that was simply the most painful things I have seen in a while.
o.O
OMG
LOOK AT THAT BODY AND THOSE ABS AFTER HAVING TWO BABIES!??
SHE STILL LOOKS SO HOT TO ME!!!!
I REALLY , REALLY FIND PATHETHIC AND TOTALLY IGNORANT ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO JUDGE HER !! I MEAN GIVE HER A BREAK,, SHE'S A PUBLIC FIGURE BUT SHE'S ALSO A HUMAN BEING JUST LIKE ANYBODY ELSE WHICH GIVES HER THE RIGHT TO HAVE PERSONAL LIFE FULL OF ISSUES JUST LIKE ANYBODY ELSE AND I THINK THAT ALL THE HATERS OUT THERE ARE THE ONES WHO HAVE NO LIFE AT ALL FOR COMMENTING UPON SOMEBODY ELSE'S LIFE..
JUST LIKE ANY BODY ELSE,, U FALL, U GET UP,,THATS IT! KEEP GOING,, OF COURSE I BELIEVE BRITNEY WASNT READY YET,,BUT I TOTALLY THINK THAT WHAT SHE DID WAS A BRAVE THING TO DO,, DESPITE ALL THE SHIT GOING ON IN HER LIFE SHE HAD THE GUTS TO GO UP THERE ON THAT STAGE AND PERFORM JUST TO DEMONSTRATE ALL THOSE HATERS OUT THERE THAT SHE STILL IS AN ARTIST A STAR... SHE WAS LIKE "LOOK AT ME,, IM STILL HERE DESPITE ALL THE DAMN HATE, AND I WONT GO ANYWHERE,, THERE STILL BRITNEY FOR A WHILE" JUST LIKE HER SONG SAID "ITS BRITNEY BITCH"... I HOPE SHE GETS BACK HER SELF BACK TOGETHER AS FAR AS HER PERSONAL LIFE AND KEEPS DOING MUSIC.
woah! Caplock got stuck uh?
woah!
Caplock got stuck uh?
It's not the hate...
She is still "here" because our society is attracted to traffic accidents. How many of us tuned in to see the wreckage that was once Britney Spears? (Raises hand).
It is why people still go to Lindsay Lohan movies too.
Spears was never overly endowed in the talent department. Her music was over-produced and over-hyped. She never had the raw vocal talent of a LeAnn Rimes. She never had the business sense or fashion savvy of a Madonna.
Watching Spears I thought of retired actors who are touted out for one last dance step, long past their prime. They are not made to move too much. The dancers around them, in far better form, make them look good, or at least passable.
I thought of Cher as I watched Britney. Brit now moves about as much and as well as Cher does in concert. But Cher is about 60. For Britney to be in that bad shape is pathetic. She did not get in this shape from having too many kids or by being too devoted a mother.
In the words of some of the guys at work (who are not so eloquent always) - "she looks like she was rode hard and sent home wet." I still am not sure where that phrase comes from, but it sounds like an overrun race horse... and that is about what Britney is now. Only she was the one who pushed herself too hard, not at her craft, but at partying. Now she is paying the price.
Meh.
A real star would know better than to possibly completely ruin their career by performing unprepared and as if she didn't care. Remember...this was supposed to be a come back. She keeps having 'come backs' like this and she won't have anything to come back to.
But really, why are you typing in all caps with all the odd punctuation? It really makes your posts difficult to read.

Who put her on stage?
I'd like to know who exactly is so greedy to make a buck that they will try to make it from a person who is obviously in serious trouble. Send her thoughts of love and healing. This is one very abused woman we are looking at. I'm old enough to remember Janis Joplin. Terrible things happen to celebrities because of what we do to them.
No man is an island...
JMHO...
I've read a lot of the commentary and reviews of Britney's "comeback" performance(I failed to watch the show myself...No real interest)since I logged on to the net this morning; and in truth, they all pretty much said the same thing...The performance was anemic, Britney looked "uninterested", and she wasn't in top physical form...
Now, I can in no way comment on her performance, because, I never saw it, nor have I been much of a fan of her music to begin with...So, there you are...However, I must, MUST, take objection to the comments that Britney was out of shape. Just because we can't see her ribs; and, heaven forbid, she actually deems to show curves, that the media has attacked her weight and appearence, is utterly ridiculous. Again, this shows the arrogance of the Hollywood mentality; and explains why so many young women are literally starving themselves to death, just so that they can be "supermodel" thin...
It sad and disturbing...Now, from the photos I've seen(Like those shown here), the costume choice...Hardly stellar(Then again, her choices on clothes - or lack, there of - have been pretty poor for the past year...Or three); but she is a truly exciting, and sexy, and hot, and all other adjectives which can describe a woman's beautiful body...
Curves and all...Britney Spears is a pretty woman
'Nuff Said!
I have no sympathy for Brit
Yes, having kids puts on weight. But the remainder of her problems are of her own making.
Does she still look great? No, she looks trashed. She looked lethargic, bored, and hung over. The bottom line is that she is a user/abuser of drugs and alcohol. It was not so much the body as the movement and dead look in her eyes. She tripped more than once during the routine, she forgot which lyrics she was lipping, in short, she was ill-prepared and burned out.
Silverman was dead on. I can't wait to see the MadTV parody.
hello

Here is Britney: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA4G8pcdXUM
Too bad.
sad
I think her body looked great.
But her performance?? I've seen seen second graders in talent shows pull off better performances than that. :)
Let's face it, a bad idea all around...
...
I never really found Sarah Silverman funny, but this most recent 'comedy stand-up' just takes the cake. She's just plain offensive to the point its not funny at all. The only thing I laughed at in the whole thing was the Madonna pun.
As for Britney, I feel sort of bad for her but at the same time she also made her bed - No one made it for her. I was facinated when she shaved her head but since then its just become a bad train wreck that won't go away. And honestly, I have little respect or interest in performers who ALWAYS lip sync -- and do it badly.
Watching the video though, I seriously wonder if she was high. It sort of looks like it...

I guess I'll be the jerk
She was woefully out of shape. Yeah her body looks better than the average female BUT Britney is not the average female. She has millions of dollars and access to high priced personal trainers. Her body was not ready to perform or be displayed like the Britney of old. On top of that, who did her extensions. Seriously! If I can tell where your real hair ends and your fake hair begins, there is a problem. It's even more of a problem since I can discern the difference because fake hair looks cleaner than real hair. Let's not even get me started on the performance, which was the at the pinnacle of the "Fuck Effort" movement (TM C&D). The reason why I and majority of people who hated the performance liked her was her incredible body and the fact that she was a performer. Yeah all her songs are mindless pop, but I always enjoyed watching her perform. Her aesthetic was pleasing to eye. Now her aesthetic makes the eye want to jump out of the socket.
Whoever at MTV that agreed to let her perform should be fired. She needs a year of peace and quiet to get herself together.
sad and pathetic
Wow.
Sarah silverman...
Is sooo damn funny... I love her dry and neurotic sense of humor. I mean c'mon people she's a comedian, their job is to make fun of poor unfortunate souls!! For crying out loud brittany shaved her head...the joke was on her Soooo get over it all ready...We all know that realisticly silverman wouldn't wish any real unfortune on brittany or her children...why the hell is everyone so sensitive these days??
" I would say I'm sorry for dissapointing you...but the truth is I'm not"
...
A comedian's job is to make people laugh. Sarah Silverman makes many laugh, I'm just not one of them. It has nothing to do with me being sensitive -- I just don't find her funny.

Agree
I didn't find her jokes funny at all.. and she kept going "wow" "awesome" which looked like she was wasting time to come up with any other "jokes".

It's not the weight, it's the body image...
It's nothing to do with her weight, nor even her fitness level. Britney was just so clearly not comfortable in her own skin last night- it seemed like she was very tentative and not the confident, polished (within an inch or her life, to the point of being manufactured) performer she has been in the past. Part of that may well have been discomfort with her body image and perhaps she would have been better off wearing something less revealing so she wouldn't worry about jiggling when she moved. But this "comeback" has been rather hastily put together and maybe she really needed a little more time to get her stuff together- emotionally, physically and professionally.
You could not be more right.
Seriously. Two years ago,
Britney
Alot Of People Mentioned That

Sure, a bad performance ...
But certainly not the train wreck that the blog post described.
I think Britney looks great for a mother of two. She's in better shape than the average woman, I thought she looked fine.
...
I agree I didn't really find her performance absolutely horrible, but it certainly wasn't good. What I find really odd is the media phenomenon this has become. I mean, it's on the front page of CNN.com, MSNBC.com and FoxNews.com. I heard some folks who work in my building here talking about it on their way out for lunch.
The worst part was seeing the audience reactions and how they looked amazed at how poor the performance was.

Performance..
I did not see the entire performance, but I did see clips, and I really couldn't stand to watch. She looked very distracted, like she didn't want to be there. I think this made everyone else feel the same way. Clumsy and off with her lyrics.. it just wasn't right.
As far as the weight issue, I'm not very surprised by the media response. I agree that she looks good considering two kids plus her current lifestyle.. unfortunately we have a perfectionist media and her industry is a picky one. I wouldn't want to trade places with her for moment. I do believe she is lacking people in her life that help guide her and I think thats what she needs most.
As far as Sara Silverman goes, she is one comic that pushes the limits and I think she is one of the few that you can love, hate or feel 'iffy' about. I fall into the 'iffy' category.
But! In the end, I never want to see anyone lost or hurting, so I hope things get better for Britney.
I didn't see her performance
My 'net is too slow to watch the clip so I'm just going to have to go off other people's opinions.
OT but
bipolar.
I don't usually do this but uhh...
1) I hear people talking about her body look better than the average female's and I won't dispute that. But the fact is, Britney is an entertainer and she put herself in this position. The outfit itself was not necessary. She could've covered her body up some [you know in a more decent/lady like fashion] and still be considered sexy.
2) Someone mentioned it earlier, but really what was going on with her extensions? You can literally see where her real hair ends and the extensions begin, and that’s a damn shame. Who let this female come onstage looking a hot ass mess?
3) Where are the strong women in her life? Where are the people who sincerely care about her and will take a stand and say enough is enough?
Where is her mother? Her sister? Her aunts or grandmother? These are the people she needs standing beside her and helping her in her time of need. I'm sorry but there is no excuse, because there is no way I would've allowed any friend or family member of mine to go on stage and potentially jeopardize their career like that. She needs to do some letting go in her life and take a few years off to find herself... because it is evident that this young lady is lost.
It just lacked 'oomph'
I thought the performance was, in a word, dead. I don't care if she weighed 400 pounds and wore nothing but a feather boa while making popping sounds in time to the beat; I would believe in the performance if the performer herself believed in it. As it was, the whole thing was half-assed and unfortunate. Next time, she should come out and put her heart and soul into the performance to impress the increasingly jaded likes of her former listeners.
Then again, maybe I'm just spoiled. I saw Linkin Park's amazing set at Projekt Rev a couple weeks ago (along with incredible sets from others like MCR and Placebo), and I still think their performance was the best of the VMAs because it was energetic, enthralling, and crowd-pleasing. And they're not even supposed to be as manufactured-for-the-masses as Britney is.
"Out of the box is where I live." -Starbuck
What About MTV?
Instead of talking about Britney's performance or Sarah Silverman's comedy thereafter...why is no one talking about MTV, who clearly exploited her for their own purpose?
I mean, there's a clear public sentiment that she's suffering through some psychological problems, so why'd they even invite her? It's woefully irresponsible.
Brit
The whole thing just made me really sad as I'm always one to cheer for the underdog. She looked so nervous, so uncomfortable, so unprepared. I thought her body, though not the body of her eighteen year old self, looked good. She probably should have worn a different outfit though, perhaps something closer to what Rihanna wore.
After I was done being sad, I thought about how long she's been in the industry and what impact it has had on her psychologically. I thought about the money she has made, but more importantly the money that was made off of her (when she was a teenager) by the adults in her life. How do they feel when they look at the person she has become? I'm not saying she's a bad person- I'm saying she's a person with a very skewed perception of self worth and self esteem. I can't even begin to imagine how someone would, as an adult, know how to assess their value as a person when they were, during their late childhood and adolescent years, used as a money making machine/teen sex symbol.
Oh My God, I can’t believe
Oh My God, I can’t believe I missed the VMAs because I was watching Clive Owen kill people with carrots. And seriously, who had two hours in the “how long is it going to take her to flash again pool”? Damn. I guess the next pool is how long is it going to be before she’s selling shit on HSN, and what is it going to be? My guess: “Brocks” Designer Crocks, just like the regular heinously ugly plastic shoes, but with rhinestones that say stuff like “Bitch” and “Princess”, they would totally come in kids sizes too.
We can only blame ourselves.
We built her up to break her down, just like society does. We love the power just a bit much don't we? All the dehumanizing we do to her doesn't change the fact that she is human. We put the camera's on her personal life, we make fun of her failed marriage and babies, we mock her inability to handle her weight after two births... Who are we to do so? We mock her for our own problems and insecurities. She's an artist, not a god. Why should she have to live up to anyone's image? I am still anticipating her new album and I love the single she dropped. She'll be back, when she's ready. She always is.
second-hand embarrassment....
I have such a hard time watching people fail....I can't watch Amercian Idol, etc. for this reason. I get incredibly embarrassed for the person...That being said, it took me a full ten minutes to click on the link above to watch Brit's performance...after watching, I think I might need therapy....(I turned the sound off and for periods of time averted my eyes.) It went way beyond second-hand embarrassment. I hope that she gets the help she needs because if a total stranger like myself can be embarrassed for her, what might it be like to actually be her???
