Guest starlets Britney and Paris vie for ratingsRatings are God. OK, let me
rephrase that before someone chucks a Bible/Koran/Torah/Vedas/dog-eared
copy of Atlas Shrugged at my head (what, no radical individualists
here?). In the world of television, ratings are God. Sure, good writing
and strong acting are minor gods. But the Big Kahuna is, and always
will be, ratings. In the quest for more and bigger ones, television
has a long and sordid history of
Oy. Two well-regarded (if not on my must-see list) shows, How I Met Your Mother and My Name Is Earl, are bringing on guest starlets Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, respectively. Both shows are no doubt relying on the high-profile cameos to help them build buzz for their new episodes as they return post–writers' strike. And, dagnabbit, if it hasn’t worked. Still, as the doomed character in any sci-fi film would say, “Dear God, what have we done?!”
Brit-Brit, who will appear on How I Met Your Mother March 24, is no doubt using her one-episode appearance as yet another comeback launching pad. She will play “Abby,” a receptionist for Ted’s dermatologist who becomes smitten with him. Scrubs star Sarah Chalke will play the dermatologist. Not like anyone noticed with all the “Oh, my God, that Britney’s shameless” hoopla going around. In fact, Alicia Silverstone dropped out from the dermatologist role precisely for that reason.
Paris will pop up on My Name Is Earl in a dream sequence (or should we say nightmare?) on April 3. I used to watch Earl, that first season before the Ugly Betty/30 Rock battle royale for my heart took over. Paris apparently appears to Earl while he is in a coma. That do-not-resuscitate consent form is looking better and better.
Now, I’m sure neither starlet will be horrible in her role. Alyson Hannigan even dubbed Britney “lovely” and said, “I have been quite impressed by Britney’s performance. The character she is playing is very sweet and endearing, which seems to come naturally to her.” Plus, this kind of guest-star-itis, while acute, is usually blessedly brief.
So here is my question: Does any of this actually make you want to watch? And, if you do watch, are you watching for the train wreck (for reference, please see the MTV Video Music Awards), or are you watching for the sheer celebrity of it all? And, finally, if Paris makes good on her threat to guest star on The L Word, will you boycott or, better yet, girlcott? Discuss.

HIMYM
I'll be watching How i Met Your Mother eitherway. Been a fan of the show ever since I heard Alyson was going to be a part of it. And seeing as I'm (sort of) a Britney fan (hey, why the heck am I apologizing for this fact anyway :P!), this will be like the icing on the cake for me. Sure I know she's been this media train wreck for these past years, but I still have some love for Brit-brit and I actually think she still has some professionalism left in her despite certain performances in the past coughvma'scough.
Paris however... I have no comment. Haven't seen Earl and not planning to do so anytime soon (though I do love Jason Lee in Kevin Smith's movies).
himym is a good show...

dog-eared copy of Atlas Shrugged at my head (what, no radical individualists here?)
That comment definatly made me crack up - I know I have a dog-eared copy of Atlas-Shrugged somewhere in my room...
I have to admit I'm a huge
I have to admit I'm a huge Brit-Brit fan, so, yes, I'm watchinf How I Met... because of Britny. And Alison, of course, and the fact that I love this show! I think Britney is just having some personal problems, but she's still my pop diva.
And about Paris, I don't like My Name Is Earl, but I love all the media and fuss that Paris causes, so I think I'd watch it if MNIE wasn't too painful to watch..

Alicia Silverstone
Actually, they way I heard/read is that Alicia dropped out way BEFORE Britney's names was even dropped.
And hey, if this means we'll be getting 'oh Britney is doing good' news instead of the 'oh my god what has she done now' news (which is getting sooo old), then I'd say that's a good thing, even if it's for the ratings.
The Way The Cookie Crumbles

why is it so hard to accept support?
If Paris Hilton wants to show support for The L Word, and in effect GLBT people everywhere, then WE should be supporting her.
Quiet your qualms about her, for one, unless you know her personally, and two, know for a fact what she has done with her life, not to mention the influence and support she has from mainstream media (like MTV, who yes, produced the Tila Tequilattack) but she has world wide notoriety and pull. She almost has a Midas touch, in that she brings the attention of her fan base, media coverage, and, perhaps most importantly, almost direct attention from those who hold the purse strings in this country.
so why is there any problem in letting her work on The L Word?
And if there is any argument, perhaps what Paris stands for, let me remind you that Paris Hilton has, in many ways, propelled the feminist cause, and is iconic as a powerful, wealthy woman... i.e. she shares many ethics with what the L Word seems to advocate.
If Paris Hilton is on the L word in the 6th season, I WILL NOT boycott it. I will be honored to have such an advocating ally high in society on my side.
It's all a persons preference
Paris has propelled the feminish cause?
I think my head just exploded on that one. Good thing I don't need my eyes to type.
Paris Hilton is the personification of everything that is wrong with society: Style over substance, exposure over integrity, popularity over deservability, conceit over humility, excess over conservation -- seriously, I can go on for days with this list.
Paris Hilton is famous for three things: 1) Being rich 2) Ignoring the law and her reponsibility to other human beings 3) A "leaked" sex tape. She has done absolutely nothing of merit to receive the attention she has garnered. How on earth is this woman propelling the feminist movement? By reinforcing the stereotype that the only way a woman can get ahead is by a) being born rich and/or beautiful and b) using her sexuality to manipulate the masses? I am so tired of bad behavior being rewarded by society. As a collective whole, we have really got our priorities ass backwards: Nice guys/girls finish last while vapid, undeserving, selfish a-holes reap wealth and success.
Let me tell you something --Paris Hilton only cares about Paris Hilton. If she wants to be on the L Word, it's because she has run out of other buzz-inducing stunts and thinks that playing lesbo will get her name in the papers (and it will). Paris Hilton hasn't done jack for our community or humanity in general. I'm so glad her granddad cut out 90% of her inheritence and gave it to charity. Paris truly could use her wealth and standing to help others -- but has she? I'd like to see some solid proof.
I don't watch either of these shows, and now I'm glad I don't.
Peace.
Thank you for enlightening me
I'm so glad that someone who obviously knows Paris Hilton personally has corrected my thinking.
I was blind in believing that there was more of a person behind the two dementional facade that the media so often displays. I was also blind in believing that the only people who cared about Paris Hilton were her many fans, paparazzi, businesses and artists who benefit from her various investment ventures, not to mention the strained American economy (which Paris stimulates vigorously all on her own)... and of course her bloodsucking, pushy agents and managers who got her to the level of fame she now enjoys.
And of course, Paris's television show, clothing line, book, etc. were totally of her own benefit. I mean, who cares that all of these endevors employed not only many untrained laborers, but also the hire of artists and specialists (is it just me or are jobs needed today?)?
... i do not disagree that society has priorities stacked the wrong way many times... HOWEVER, even though she was born into a privleged household, Paris Hilton deserves respect for not just sitting back and selfishly spending it (the 2007 Global Interest Poll listed "consumerism" as Americans highest ranking contribution to the global economy)... she actually DOES stuff.
and in response to being glad that you don't watch these shows... if you've never watched them, how do you know what you're missing? If you do decide to watch one, you don't have to like it, but at least give it the respect it deserves... I was glad that I never tried ice cream... before I tried it. Now I love it. Give it the shows a "taste" before you write them off.
Oy vey...
First, I will start off by saying there is no shortage of talent in the world. The entertainment world abhors a vacuum -- there will always be someone to fill the spotlight. While you laud Paris for being a boost to the American economy (which I will debate later), you seem to neglect the fact that there are countless others more deserving of such standing and opportunity. As long as there are media whores like Paris willing to pull out all the stops for attention, those much more talented and deserving will go unnoticed. There will be LESS opportunities for those more deserving.
How about all the gifted writers who will never get book deals because America would rather read the third-grade drivel the Paris puts out? How about all the legitimate TV show ideas that got axed in favor of the idiotic Simple Life (yes I did watch it twice -- two hours of my life I will never get back). All the brilliant muscians and songwriters struggling to have their voices heard while Paris Hilton's "Stars are Blind" got instant airplay.
Like Ronald Reagan before you, you seem to have bought into the myth that "trickle down" economics benefits the middle and lower classes. Wrong. Those "artists" and "specialists" do not reap the rewards of government tax breaks and higher profit margins (I know this because I am one of those "specialists") -- the executives and shareholders do. The rich indeed, do get richer, while the middle class stagnates and the poor gets poorer. I see from your profile that you are only 19 years old. If after 10+ years in the work force you still feel that someone like Paris Hilton benefits the middle and lower classes I will stand corrected and buy you a 5 star dinner. Yes, the leaches make more money -- but I don't hold them in any higher regard than I do Paris. The managers, agents, producers, and papparazzi who peddle this junk are all of the same ilk as far as I'm concerned.
As for not knowing Paris Hilton personally -- does it matter? When someone makes a career out of living in the public eye, does he/she have the right to claim a different inward persona? After all, Paris Hilton is not famous for being an artist or business person -- she is famous for BEING PARIS HILTON. Many a talented person has managed to have a career without pandering to the gossip machine. But that's just it -- Paris Hilton does not have talent. Like Gypsy Rose Lee, her noteriety is attestable to a gimmick. And she milks that gimmick to no end for her own benefit (not for the artists, unskilled workers, and US economy). When someone sells out his/her integrity -- as shamelessly as Paris has -- for the sake of noteriety, I am incapable of respecting that person. Sorry. I just can't do it.
FYI, I watched one episode of My Name Is Earl and three of How I Met Your Mother. I'm a big Willow/Tara and really wanted to like How I Met Your Mother because of Alyson Hannigan. Sadly, even she couldn't save it for me.
...I agree... I disagree...
You make an interesting argument, and I agree with you on many points, mainly because the discussion has begun to shift.
I DO NOT BELIEVE that Paris Hilton is someone who wields artistic talent. It is interesting, however, that her work has become the subject of controversy on an artistic level. I don’t think that necessarily validates her, and in no way does she compare, but similar discussions to the one we’re having have been made about the artists Christo and Jean-Claude, Jackson Pollock, Edgar Degas and so many more.
Whether we like it or not, Paris Hilton has tremendous power over a large demographic: consumers. Teens and pop culture aficionados are all under the spell of starlets like Paris Hilton. Wherever she goes, they follow… which is why I made my original statement, that I think it might be a good idea for Paris Hilton to be included on The L Word, because she has the influence to introduce her fans to knowledge and teach them concurrence.
Of course I believe that there are people of talent who deserve to receive the level of attention that Paris Hilton has, but unfortunately America is not a meritocracy. People similar to Paris have and will always exist, because there have been and still are people who buy into her. In my opinion, the consumers are even worse than the agents and paparazzi, because again, whether we like it or not, Paris Hilton is still in business. Paris Hilton is just one face on an unfortunate social issue.
Not having respect for someone is a big charge in my book. And that has everything to do with knowing someone personally and being wary of assumptions. In the case with Paris Hilton, there are so many unknown variables about what happens behind the scenes in her life that make any argument that she ISN’T a decent human being implausible. The Paris Hilton that the world sees is a prepackaged product, much like the food people receive at the drive-thru window… and since they don’t REALLY know what has happened to it, most people simply take it in, giving it (and their immune systems) the benefit of the doubt. Unless any different is qualified solidly, Paris, as a human (not a product), deserves a level of respect.
I have always had a soft spot for minorities. In some respects, Paris Hilton is one. Everyday she is hunted (by paparazzi), objectified (by fans), criticized and stereotyped (by people like us), humiliated (by her “accidental” sex tape)… and this is from many people on a daily basis. She will never have the normalcy that I enjoy… so, I pity her.
It should be remembered too that she was born into wealth. It would have been easy for her to take her father’s money and spend it on herself only, or perhaps go out and invest in big businesses, then just sit back and relax. No matter how preposterous or ostentatious, however, Paris Hilton invested in herself… and that’s a strong statement.
On the grand scheme of things, yes Paris Hilton is only one little rich girl out of them all. Her family’s very large fortune only equals a percentage of America’s national debt. So, no, not even Paris’ extravagant spending could trickle down enough to make a difference. With a valueless dollar and a stock market that has had the very bad kind of fluctuations lately, having ANYONE investing back into America in anyway possible is better than nothing.
I appreciate that you attribute what it seems you believe is ignorance (or inexperience) on my part to my age, not my origin. Some are not so open-minded. Honestly, I’ve never had anyone make an excuse for me because of being young… usually it’s because of the stereotype attached to being a Southerner. In my “only 19” years I have already completed one career. I worked on 8 cross country music tours, where I performed to my hearts content and then kept on until I got jaded and finally reached retirement age. Now I primarily work in personal relations and marketing of other people’s music (I have a strong familial musical heritage to uphold). I have met many of my legends of true talent like Kris Kristofferson, Kathy Mattea, Barbara Mandrell… I’ve met some of the few producers who made brilliant decisions like Sam Phillips and Jim Foglesong… I’ve even gotten to speak with some of the greatest women of our time like Sandra Day O’Connor.
When I performed, I saw all the talent in thousands of cheesy music festivals and sleazy bars. I saw the headliners of concerts whose musical ability was of corpse-like pallor in comparison. The main lesson I learned from my 15 years in that business is that you can’t get mad at the system, because there is no system. The entertainment industry decides the next star in a manner similar to natural selection. It just happens and the reasons why are never good enough and never systematic.
girlcott!
HIMYM rocks!!!
I fervently believe in this show, and I'm praying that it continues for another two seasons at least. Not just because Alyson Hannigan is in it, or because a woman actually directs the show (which I think, is still pretty rare) and because women tend to lead-write most of the episodes, but because I think the cast together is fabulous. I'm very jealous of Brit-Brit that she actually gets to work with such a talented, gay-friendly cast and crew.
In other Neil Patrick Harris news, has anyone else heard that he and Nathan Fillion will be doing a Joss Whedon Internet musical?

Oh gawd
I certainly would not watch a show simply because a celebrity like Paris of Britney appeared on it.
However, I would not boycott any of my favourite shows either. That's taking things just a little too far.
I guess I don't really care about these women one way or another.
If I were to give a reason why I dislike them is because they give women a bad name.
