The British invasion: U.K. actresses cross the pond for American TV

Whenever I turn on my TV these days, I get the strange urge to pull a Paul Revere in my living room and start screaming, “The British are coming! The British are coming!” Until I realize, oh wait, they’re already here. This season a brigade of British actresses are breaking out their best American accents to star in new prime-time shows. Among them are a bionic woman, an undead girl, a Terminator fighter and a vampire helper. Here's a look at the U.K. actresses making time on American TV screens.

I think you’ve already met Bionic Woman Michelle Ryan and her abs. In the last episode, they put her real accent to good use undercover as a British exchange student. An Englishwoman playing an American girl pretending to be a British student? It was like Victor/Victoria with accents instead of gender.

Another actress who needs no introduction here is Lena Headey. For Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, she drops her English accent and picks up some big guns. Accent, no accent. Gun, no guns. I’m not picky: I’ll take my Lena any way I can get her.

On the other hand, I had no idea the adorable Anna Friel from Pushing Daisies was British. This is probably because I had no idea who Anna Friel was, period. I do now, which is officially reason 3,000,001 I am happy I own a television.

I did recognize Sophia Myles from Moonlight. But her role in the new vampire drama gave me pause. Seems she has a thing for the blood suckers. She played one in Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. She has played one of their victims in the U.K. TV adaptation of Dracula. And now she is playing a reporter working with (and falling for) a vampire. Someone check to see if she has an aversion to garlic and crosses — I’m starting to worry.

And two more actresses from across the pond: Anastasia Griffith, Katie from Damages, and Zuleikha Robinson, from the mid-season replacement New Amsterdam.

So, why all the outsourced talent this season? And why hire a Brit only to make her talk like a Yank? And, more important, would any of these lovely ladies read to me in their original accents? The newspaper, a phonebook, anything — like I said, I’m not picky.

British accents...

... are the.hottest.thing.ever.

Seriously. And even more so when everybody around the speaker is American, cause it makes them sound so much more sophisticated. I just don't get why Brits on TV have to swap their hot accents for an American one. I've always been pissed off about Louise Lombard not having her real accent on CSI, especially because her American accent is kinda bad. It would make her even hotter, if that's possible.

But anyway. I looooove to hear Rachel Shelley (TLW) and Marsha Thomason (Las Vegas) talk. It's even more fun when they curse. And uhm... Simone Lahbib anyone?

Michelle Ryan as Zoe...

Ok, so I remember these things :-)

Anna Friel was involved in

Anna Friel was involved in the first prime-time lesbian kiss on UK TV back in '94.  It was on a soap called Brookside and caused such an uproar that it was cut from the omnibus later in the week.  I was a mere 9 years old, but I remember watching it.  The episode is actually currently available to download on 4oD, so I have downloaded so I can relive what was probably my first exposure to lesbianism!

Other British actresses going American include Natascha McElhone in Californication and, of course, Joely Richardson in Nip/Tuck.  It would be great if Brits could play Brits, but I guess I can deal :)

the British are coming! the British are coming!

i heart Lena Headey.  and Michelle Ryan as the Bionic Woman (although since i know her better as a 14-year-old in EastEnders, that is actually rather perturbing).

but Anna Friel is one of the bona fide goddesses of the British small screen; she was in a seminal moment in UK tv history when her character (Beth Jordache) in the Channel 4 soap, Brookside, was not only an out character, she had her first on-screen kiss with a girl.  this was at the height of Conservative rule in Britain, so lots of outraged headlines followed.  but you know what?  the sky didn't cave in, and it didn't convert millions of questioning teenagers (more's the pity!).  never mind that she murdered her father (a drunk thug) and buried his body under the patio; the right wing were more concerned about her being gay.  does any of this sound familiar?  (cf the 'outrage' - hey, i think i just coined a new phrase! - about Dumbledore being called gay.  the press care more about that than they do about Iraq, economic meltdown, environmental disaster, and so on....).

anyhoo, glad to hear she's making your acquaintance, y'all!

the crying shame of beth jordache

was that they killed her off rather than letting her out of prison to go off, her name cleared, and go to medical school like she always planned. i know that upset a lot of lesbians in the UK. but it was a great kiss.

o and there's my girl sophia myles. god i love that woman.

man-a man-a

don't you just hate it when that happens?  there i was, composing a response to the news about Anna Friel, and somebody else beat me to it!  makes me look like a complete muppet, who hadn't read the previous post...but we just crossed over at the same time, honest!

Haha!  It happens!  In

Haha!  It happens!  In fact, everyone wants to share the Anna Friel news!!  Ahh!  Anna Friel on Brookie!  Those were the days!!

Michelle Ryan's British accent in BW sounded so wrong to me as I also can only think of her in Eastenders, in fact I always think of her stood in the middle of Albert Square shouting 'You can't tell me what to do, you ain't my muvver!'  I was never into 'Enders (Brookie was the only British soap I have really watched) but I did get really involved in that storyline, probably because Zoe was hot!

Anna Friel

If you like Anna Friel, you'll be interested to hear about her breakthrough role in the UK. She played a lesbian in 'Brookside', a long-running (now cancelled) UK soap opera, and for a long time, the kiss her character shared with another girl was the only bit of lesbian lip-lock action we had in the UK!

[edit: I guess I'm not the only one who wanted to share the glad tidings about Anna Friel!]

Anna Friel

I remember when Anna Friel was in Brookside as Beth Jordache. She and her mum killed her violent dad and buried him under the patio. Meep. She was also involved in a controversial lesbian kiss as mentioned above. I remember watching it even though I can only have been 10 maybe. There are lots of clips on youtube but this one shows the infamous kiss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEDqTBr0Yls

I didn't like Michelle Ryan in Eastenders and to be honest it put me off watching Bionic Woman!!

Accents are hot!

Living in the south now I am dubbed by my friends as the "yankee" because I have that hybrid Philly/Jersey accent. I don't consider that an accent but I digress. I am friends with some foreign women that when they speak I am enamored, really. I love all different types of accents so when Michelle Ryan dropped her British accent on us BW watchers her hotness factor spiked and she was a better actor (I thought anyway).

But yea, the whole point is accents are hot! : )

Sophia Myles

Man I love Sophia Myles. Her biggest role in the US was probably Tristan and Isolde (she played Isolde, of course), but I think the movie was doomed by its inclusion of James Franco. I remember her from Underworld, but she really really impressed me with her turn as Madame Du Pompadour in an episode of Doctor Who. She's the entire reason I watch Moonlight, and so far I'm not disappointed (despite the at-times awful writing, she handles herself really well). I'm hoping the increased exposure leads to some good stuff for her in Hollywood in the future.

Madame du Pompadour! Madame

Madame du Pompadour! Madame du Pompadour! I *loved* that episode of Doctor Who. It's the only one I've ever seen, but it was amazing. It made me cry despite having no previous involvement in the series. That's impressive.

So that's Sophia Myles? Excellent. Well done her.

America's belated discovery of Anna Friel

Anna Friel-I won't go on too much about her because I'm sure there are plenty of others who can do that for me, and besides she kind of leaves me speechless... But her charcater Beth's coming out story coincided timing wise with mine and it made it sooo much easier. Not only for me but my friends and family too. The woman is a goddess. She played the Natalie Portman role in the London stage version of Closer and I saw her as the lead in Lulu, she was heartbreaking.

Anyway so much for me not going on about Anna. But there are other Brit's too-Louise Lombard in CSI, Ashley Jenkins in Ugly Betty, Polly Walker, Lydnsey Duncan in Rome (ok I know that is a BBC thing and a bit last year but come on it's  Polly Walker and Lyndsey Duncan!) Jean Marie Baptiste in Without A Trace, Clare Forlani in CSI and lots more that I cannot quite remember!

Stop stealing all our lovely leading ladies America-or at least play fair and trade. How about we borrow Sarah Shai or lovely Leisha? Hmm no, well just keep your hands off Elaine Cassidy pretty pretty please!

I'd never seen Anastasia

I'd never seen Anastasia Griffith before Damages; had no idea she was a Brit.  Wow.

Anastasia Griffith

Anastasia Griffith is also the little sister of Jamie Bamber who plays "Apollo" on Battlestar Galactica.

This may change your

This may change your feelings slightly about the British accent, but I just wanted to share with my American cousins the one abiding memory I have of Michelle Ryan.  No matter how hot she looks these days kicking ass on BW, whenever I picture her this is what I will see:

Doesn't change it at all for

Doesn't change it at all for me. In fact, I love this sort of accent, because it's not the traditional posh one that most famous Brits seem to have adopted. That's a little too boring for me. Anna Friel's accent in Goal! made me swoon, and Michelle's accent in EE made me giggle with glee. I'm just a sucker for something a little different.
Kaytiana's picture

Hehe!  While I'm not

Hehe!  While I'm not personally a fan of the eastend accent, I also don't like the faux posh one that most traditionally seems to be portrayed for the Brits.  I guess British accents aren't quite so appealing to Brits anyway since we do hear them everyday :)  but I'd rather just hear a natural accent than the 'posh' southern English we are kind of stereotyped with.  I am a northerner, and while I don't really have a strong northern accent, it most definately does not sound like the majority you hear on American shows.

you dont' say...

after the posting i was looking through my screen saver and I thought GEE, you'r right, it's all them Brits!
i think aside from Jodie Foster,Renee O'Connor, Mary Louise Parker and Angelina Jolie, all my other all time fav. actresses even my all time fav. actors are either British, Irish, Kiwi or Australians.what can i say, I'm a sucker for accents.
Met Anastasia Griffith in person once, nice lady, but i'v never seen her work (or maybe i just didn't remember).

Gobsmacked...

I'm happy and sad about the invasion of the Brits.  Happy, because these women are talented, beautiful and kicking butt on American TV.  Sad, because like so many of you, I too love a woman with an accent.  I would love to hear these actresses speak in their native tongue.

The fun part is when some of these actresses go on the talk show circuit and you hear them talking in their actual voice, with the accent-I become all gobsmacked with giddiness.  I tell you an accent coming from the lips of a beautiful woman can make me swoon anyday.

Let's of course not forget that besides the Brits we also have all the lovely ladies from Down Under to swoon over, among them Yvonne Strahovski (CHUCK) and Poppy Montgomery (WITHOUT A TRACE).

Then there's also the Scottish lass...the beautiful Ashley Jensen (UGLY BETTY)... thankfully with her we get the accent!

Don't forget we'll also have Frances O'Connor and Miranda Otto to swoon over, whenever the writers strike lets up and Cashmere Mafia begins airing.

Yowsa

Thank you to all the readers who posted video links! I had heard about Anna Friel's Brookside kiss, but had never seen it - I ended up watching about an hour of clips from the show. It seems like it was done pretty well, especially for the time, and Anna Friel was brilliant. I, too, had the pleasure of seeing her here in NY a few years ago, on the stage in 'Closer'. A terrific production and cast.

Regarding the Brit accent, I'm a fan of the less commonplace (on Yank tv) Northern accents, a la Liverpool, Leeds, Yorkshire in general - yowsa, I say. C'mon you reds LOL

I first saw Sophia Myles in the terrific adapation of Mansfield Park, with Frances O'Connor. I knew that Kate Winslet had a younger sister who was also acting, and I assumed it was the younger Winslet, seriously! I think they look remarkably alike, and considering my feelings about Ms. Winslet, this is not a bad thing at all...

Northener

Lena Heady was brought up in my home town and it is just a fact that northern accents are way sexier than southern ones. It never occured to me that she'd have to have an american accent for Sarah Conner. Bummer.
Amadeus66's picture

It isn't only one way traffic

Renee Zellweger and (particularly) Gwyneth Paltrow have been cast in English roles rather often in recent years

It's the accent!

I love that there are more British actresses in leading roles and in series that I can actually see now, but I agree: why make them talk like Americans?  I'm a total sucker for a British accent.  I actually thought Jaime Sommers was a bit more interesting with her British accent.  I loved it!
