"Bones" gets in the holiday spirit

Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t watched last night’s episode of Bones, stop reading or don’t blame me when I ruin the surprise. OK, are they gone? Great, cause we’ve got to talk. So, was it good for you? The inevitable happened on Bones last night as Brennan and Booth had their first kiss. The show’s Christmas episode made good use of mistletoe for the silly yet surprisingly sweet installment.

Sure, the kiss wasn’t exactly passionate. Or romantic. Or done of their own free will. But Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz still played it off pretty perfectly, mixing stoic professionalism with confused chemistry. And the gum thing was priceless.

In fact, I think it deserves a second look. First, the setup.

Then the result.

But now that they’ve smooched, will the show change? A big part of its charm has been Brennan and Booth’s Moonlighting meets X-Files sexual tension. Both those shows masterfully employed the will-they-or-won’t-they tease ... until they didn’t. Many critics consider the Maddie/David consummation the jump-the-shark moment. And fans are still waiting for proper Scully/Mulder kissage. When it comes to sexual tension, actually having sex can totally kill the mood. Sure, shippers clamor for the couplings. But once it happens, what is left to root for? There is a reason fairy tales end with happily ever after.

Still, with Bones, I think the show did a smart thing by teasing fans with a taste of Brennan and Booth: The Couple, but leaving plenty of room for more. They still have to have their first non-blackmailed kiss (no, I will not address the ridiculousness of blackmailing a co-worker to kiss another for your puckish amusement; I’m just going with it) and everything else.

So, do you like it when TV couples finally get together? Where should Brennan and Booth’s relationship go from here? And, most important, what kind of gum was it?

keep teasing us

When it comes to TV couples it's all about anticipation. I hope they keep up the tension and don't tumble into bed (unless it's a contrived dream sequence, and then it's OK :-)).

BTW: Did anyone else think Emily Deschanel looked even more beautiful in last night's episode than normal?

Damn!

Now, I'm feeling Puckish! I'm gonna go find my wife and kiss her for 5 steamboats . . . or maybe even a flotilla. A large flotilla.

Its hard not to love Bones. :)

I loved how they handled it

I loved how they handled it and it didn't ruin anything for me. They played it perfectly! You know, I'm loving Bones this season, for all the gore and murder, it's surprisingly uplifting and positive as a show. The characters are great as long as they don't change how the characters are written, I don't really care who sees who romantically. I don't think it would be out of the realm of possibility for Bones and Booth to hook up at some point, but I'm happy either way. So you know, whatever. Great ep!

Alone?!

Not that I don't like them being together, but am I the only one who actually like the thought of them just being good friends and tease each other, but never actually getting together? For some reason I just think they're more adorable as friends than as something more. Am I the only one that feels that way?

I just...

LOVED it!!!

That's all I can say, because I'm still happy about it :)

Last night was fantastic!!!

Last nights episode was soooooo good! I do think though that if Bones and Booth were to get together then the show would lack that sexual tension that is sooooooooooo good. Thats why I love it so much. Bones make me cringe, but i will stand it to see what is happening with those two...

As for the gum...it was green so my guess is speariment or wintergreen. I totally missed the gum thing last night when I was watching. So glad that you posted that or else I would have never known.

Bones, oh yeah

That whole puckish thing was lame, but it still had me and Caty going 'squee!' I love, love, love this show. It never ceases to amuse and engage me...which is saying something since I have the attention span of a genetically altered fruit fly used in senile dementia experiments.

Puckish is good.

I'm a sucker for the classic gum move.

You sure must like your brother. Hee.

Bones is an awesome show. I want them together, yet I don't want the relationshp to change. The agony of confliction.

It's all about the tension!

I really do want these two to end up together, or at least get together but I know I'm just fooling myself because what I want more than that is to keep getting excited about the tension between them every week. All about the "If Only.."! I know that my interest would fade if they got together cause that's not something you can take back, unless it's in a dream but if it's in a dream it's not "real" to the characters and therefore not "real" to me.

I SO respected this show for not making Bones and Booth kiss in that Roxy with fighter bf episode. But this one was done cute, and the "if only.." isn't threatened by this. It'll be upped. The only reservation I have is that when the tension gets higher, there will be no other way than do or don't. It should be in between! =)

And yeah. Emily Deschanel looked even more beautiful in this episode. I actually had to watch the scene in the beginning with her father three times. So relaxed. So un-geeky. But still good, really good! Hhggghh

Loved it

I found the awkwardness after the kiss hilarious.

Great episode

They are so cute.

hmmm

on the one hand there impending romance is like moonlighting and x-files but...they can always have what David had on another show we all liked...a relationship he can't have for some reason...in this case most of the time...a police station will separate a couple if they work under the same roof...ie. new york undercover...Det. Nina Moreno and Det. Eddie Torres...

Not a big deal

it was under duress, and more than slightly hesitated. Most definately not French or anything. I can't figure out where she managed to slip him the tongue and the gum, it just looks like a short awkward lip lock.

And it won't change anything in the relationship. I heard in a way there will be a turn for the worse, but not because of the kiss.

Bygones.

Anyhoo, anyone else is peeved for having pushed all new eps until the new year?!

Adorable...

I thought it was adorable how both Bones and Booth appeared to be suppressing a giggle after their kiss.  I think that Emily and David's offscreen friendship translates beautifully into the awesome onscreen chemistry that we see between the two.

I loved how Booth and his son brought the tree for Bones and her family.

This show has the perfect blend of drama and comedy and the chemistry between all the characters is palpable.  This is one cast whom I would fully believe if they said they were all great friends off the set, because you can just really see that in the way they play off of each other onscreen.

I'm one of those who subscribes to the idea of having Bones and Booth continue their flirtation and friendship but not crossing into the Moonlighting/X-Files territory of having them become lovers (maybe when the show is in its last season (which will hopefully be many years away) we can get the "payoff" but for now I like the dynamics just the way they are!
