"Bionic Woman": Better, faster, stronger?

So, was it good for you? The much heralded, much anticipated, much drooled-over Bionic Woman premiered last night. Are you still basking in the afterglow, or do you feel like you’ve taken a cold shower?

Me, I’m already smitten. But not with the title character. Oh, Sarah Corvus. You had me at “Time out.” Seriously, what is it about the bad girls?

*** Warning: Spoilers! ***

OK, time in. Early reviews of Bionic Woman have heaped praise on bionic baddie Katee Sackhoff, and rightfully so. She is everything you want in your villain: fierce and frightening, damaged and deranged, insanely hot and possibly just insane. She steals every scene she is in and you find yourself wishing she would pop up in those she is not in. Plus, how awesome was that fight at the end? I rewatched it three times. For real.

Which also highlights one of the episode’s weaknesses. While Katee and the fight were riveting, much of the pilot was bogged down in exposition (look, she is a bartender. Look, she has a bratty kid sister. Look, she is dating a professor who, while she calls him “not entirely uncharming,” has yet to convince me he is not entirely boring). Which leads us to the Bionic Woman herself, Michelle Ryan. The British actress has no problem mastering an American accent, but she needs to work on her gravitas. I mean, I’m sure the shock of suddenly being imbued with super strength and superhuman abilities is disconcerting, but no one is tuning in to the Bionic Woman for bionic angst.

Battlestar Galactica mastermind David Eick clearly has reframed Bionic Woman as a darker psychological drama than the camptastic '70s original. But in embracing the melodrama, he has sucked some of the fun out of the formula, at least for now. And if the show insists on taking itself so seriously, it should dial down the overdone score. No need to hit us over the head with pulsing, pounding, can-you-feel-the-tension-cause-this-is-really-tense music. We get it; this is Drama with a capital D.

Still, there is something almost irresistible about watching a woman come into her power. I hope that as Jaime Sommers becomes more comfortable with her abilities, Michelle will also grow into her part. And, for the love of all that is kick-ass, please let’s have her square off with Katee as many times as possible. Practice makes perfect, right?

So what bionic bits have

So what bionic bits have they given her? (We won't get this in Australia for months.) I just hope they ditched the bionic ear which always struck me as a poor imitation of Steve Austin's bionic eye. And it was too hard to mimic in the playground. Then again, it did give us plenty of opportunity to watch Lindsay Wagner push her hair back in slow motion...

bestill my battlestar-loving heart....

Finally, Katee can play a bad ass without all the angsty Starbuck drama.  Dont get me wrong, I love me some Kara Thrace but come on why is she brooding over Apollo and BlAnders, when we all know she's really got the hots for President Roslin!  Sorry I fell into BSG world for a second.  I loved the pilot for Bionic Woman.  Your so right about Michelle Ryan still needing to really come into her powers but I thought she did a good job.  What she sees in that boring professer I'll never know.  Katee totally stole the show.  Oh and how hot was Molly Price with her new short blonde hair.  Totally butch!  Totally HOT! I liked her as Officer Faith Yokas on 3rd Watch but as Ruth Treadwell on Bionic Woman.....well lets just say she can handcuff me any day.  I'm hoping for more kick ass fight scenes with Katee and Michelle and if the plot sucks...at least we'll always have that awsome fight scene in the rain and for me it was worth it.

Bionic Woman in my opinion

Woo geez, I get to comment.  I saw it lastnight on time.  I was really anxious, and I didn't want to get blind-sided by the fact that Michelle Ryan and Katee Sachoff were the gorgeous woman in the show.  I wanted to see how the acting and the plot would be. Truly see the story as a whole.  Me being a big fan of the original Bionic Woman(No one can top Linsay Wagner), anyways, I saw it and have to say, while the show wasn't bad, it wasn't great.  The story seems rushed, and at some points very dull.  The interaction with her and the professor left much to be desired and I can honestly say, the interaction between her and Sarah Corvus was alot more electrifying than her love interests.

I see they changed the younger sister out for a different character.  The orignal was supposed to be deaf-mute and able to communicate with monkey's.  I now know, that I will be watching more for Jaime and Sarah to square off than anything, and ofcourse gratuitous shots of Jaime in tight clothing.  The actors themselves were okay, and I think Michelle Ryan herself could have done better, but it's just really beginning so I'm hoping it will pickup.  I guess they needed more action in the first one, and the second episode looks like it will be the breakthrough where she's training and getting herself in gear.  She finally accepts being who she is, and wants to help save the world.  I'm ready for those fake, one handed pullups someone mentioned on this site earlier. Bring it.

Actually -

"but no one is tuning in to the Bionic Woman for bionic angst."

I rather enjoyed it because of the angst. I mean, I'd be eff'ing crapping myself if what had happened Michelle Ryan's character. I WANT her to be kinda screwed up and dealing for quite a while with happened to her ... like Max was in Dark Angel (ie no matter how good a time she may be having, if you scatched the surface, the pain of the victimised woman was/is still there).

Nothing annoys the shite out of me more than an unrealistic "I've been through something hideously incradibly traumatic, but I've dealt really fast, so no big" kind of response. I want wounded pysches. Maybe I might be projecting a tad :)

But regardless ...

*DROOL!*

Oh. My. F**king. FGM.

Both Michelle's character, and Katee's character ... holy crud ... I came over all verklempt *fans self*

*SWOON!*

I'm glad you brough up the boyfriend btw ... I mean, I could just be projecting here again (completely possible admittedly), but I thought there was WAY more chemistry happening between her and Katee's character than ANYTHING between her and her supposed boyfriend. The electricity between the two women was just palatable.

That said, I wouldn't put it past Katee's character to totally jump her at some point :)

Oh, and I so completely want Michelle Ryan's leather jacket!!! *grin*

I will definitely be watching again ... that fight scene was awesome.

You hit the nail on the head

I think that's why I thought the show moved to fast past Michelle Ryan's emotions.  I mean something this tramatic and all should take time to fully grasph what has happened. I to loved Dark Angel, and I do love Angst.   I don't know Katee Sackhoff to well in her career because I've never watched things she's been in, but I think she added something to the show, and they should keep her on, because she's the zest. I'm looking foward to next week's episode.

Liked it

I watched the pilot with pretty low expectations, but I really enjoyed it. I agree that Katee Sackhoff completely stole the show- she was fantastic. As a Battlestar Galatica fan, I was playing "find the BSG actor".. and I spotted the Chief and Baltar's lawyer.

My only complaint.. how in the WORLD did the boyfriend survive that car crash? There is no way he would have walked away with just a cut over his eye?

CyberWoolf's picture

Nope

I downloaded the pilot from Amazon last week when they had it free.  Mind you I still cant get amazon unbox of my computer...

ANYWAY..  I really was not fond of it at all.  I thought it was rather dull and a little cheesy.  I am a Galactica whore to the day I day but I really didnt even like Katee Sackhoff in it.  Beat me if you will (please!) but it sounded like she was straining her voice and I didnt like the hair :-(

The rooftop scene did however.. kick some serious ass...  best part.  But I will not be watching it agin.

Light Rail Coyote's picture

i agree...

...although i am interested enough to give it another chance, i thought katee sackhoff was too cheesy.  her acting is borderline campy!  i actually laughed when she said, "Time out."

overall, the storyline is completely rushed--it should have taken at least half a season to get to that rooftop scene (cut out all the cheesy dialogue and that scene is hot!).  the acting is sub-par. and finally, the writers need to stop the one-liners.

TheDoomMerchant's picture

Sounds exciting.

I have yet to see it for myself, but my mother recorded it last night and I'm going to watch it today.

I hope I can watch it by myself instead of with her. Don't know if I'll be able to keep myself under control during the fight scene/s.

Awkward...

Good morning Sarah Corvus!

There's a good start to the day! Yum! I pretty much say ditto to everything. Sarah Corvus/Katee Sackhoff? Utterly hot and scene-stealing. Michelle Ryan? I have high hopes, but I'm not on board yet. (one-armed pull-ups might win me over) The boyfriend? I just don't buy their relationship. At all! And he's a dud. If they were recasting stuff, that would've been a good place to start. I liked the original sister, but this new one is very well cast, physically. They really do look like sisters.

So, back to Katee. ;) I need to hone my internetting abilities because you've been finding some really great photos of her. Oh my hotness... The best thing this show can do is have more Sarah Corvus. And um, less Isaiah Washington! Fine, let him work, but not on stuff I want to watch!

In my favourite game of Spot-the-BSG-Cast, I also spotted Jammer for half a second and the skeezy guy in the alley was the CAG in the miniseries. As for Romo Lampkin (I'm still not forgiving that name!), why on earth did they cast a 43 year old man to play the father of a 39 year old character? The make-up is awful.

Oh right, back to Katee! Yum.

artsyamy's picture

well

While watching the love scene in Bionic Woman last night my lady turned to me and said:  "Is it just me or did she have wwwaaaayyy more chemistry in the bar with that blonde chick? I got some lesbiotic vibes there."

Yes, seriously. Sarah Corvus (Katee Sackhoff) yum.

Danin's picture

I was..

never a big Michelle Ryan fan since her angsty whinge-tastic performance as Zoe Slater on Eastenders but to be honest she has got a lot better..and a lot hotter..which feels really wrong because of Zoe. She still needs to grow into it like a lot of people said above but she wasn't as bad as I thought.

But yeah, Hello Katee Sackoff, she can totally come and kick my ass any day of the week. I am going to go downstairs and borrow my housemates copies of BSG just so I can catch up on all things Katee.

I hope the producers of BSG realise what a hot badass she is and throw her a few leather outfits and wet bitch fights in the new series of BSG, more than a few...

RunnerFilmGirl's picture

wow

I was very impressed. I'm a Michelle fan. Her character is HOT! But I tend to go for the darker hair anyway... My favorite line of the show had to be the little girl when she sees the Bionic Woman running as fast as the car:

"I just thought it was cool that a girl could run like that".

Laurie_Anne's picture

I definitely

liked the second half of the show better than the first, so I'm glad I stayed tuned past the boring/awkward introductory bits. I think this show has the potential to be really cool, fingers crossed! I'll definitely watch again next week, and that's saying something because I'm usually too impatient to watch hour-long tv shows.

Heels

At the end my wife turned to me and said, "I won't be able to watch it if they continue to put her in those heels."  I couldn't agree more - but enjoyed the visuals very much!

the trend continues...

Perhaps the working writers & producers in Hollywood who’ve given us some great shows just need to step aside and let all of the armchair writers who seem to be out there take a crack at it.

I’m sure there will be nothing wrong with that material as to character arcs, structure, dialog and story flow that will need to continue for 22 episodes to keep a diverse socio-economic audience tuning in just to stay on the air.

I’ll choose to herald the show and the cast as a positive step forward in giving us back a female heroine (or two) that can kick butt while also being a woman (with all the angst and wiles she might bring with her).

michelle ryan can rock my world anyday...she was great in jekyll with the BRIGHT red hair *swoon*and i guess if they were going to remake the bionic woman (i had issues with that to begin with) it could have been MUCH worse...they have me hooked so far...im just...really hesitant about the show alltogether since they are bringing on that douche that had the greys anatomy scandal for a huge arc...

Ratings...

According to E! the show did well, because it was "the night's highest rated show among desirable young adults".

I'm curious about how they decipher the desirable young adults from the not desirable ones, though... does everyone who drools over Katee qualify?

Starbuck, Kat, Sarah, and Jaime

Maybe BSG's fourth and final (sigh) season will find a bigger audience now that more people are discovering the hotness that is Katee Sackoff as my favorite Viper Pilot, Kara "Starbuck" Thrace.  And you want to talk about TENSION between two women?  Check out the episodes that feature Starbuck and Kat at each other's throats!  You want them to punch each other and start making out at the same time!

Although I've never seen Katee Sackoff play a lesbian, I'm sure she's fully aware of a lot of lesbian attraction towards her and so makes the extra-special effort to throw in a lot of tease when she had intense scenes with characters she's in conflict with - at least that's what I like to think.  I totally wanted Jaime and Sarah to start making out in that bathroom, or at least Sarah to start sucking on Jaime's no-longer injured finger.  A girl can fantasize, right?

I liked the pilot, as did many of my friends and we're waiting to see where this going.  Remember, after Battlestar Galactica premiered Katee Sackoff got one hell of a rimming for playing a beloved character that used to be a man.  As I recall, the insults against her were BRUTAL with many of her other castmates jumping in and defending her against hating fans.  I think it took about a season and a half before the haters started rooting and cheering her on.  Just last year Entertainment Weekly named her character as one of the best heroes on TV.  Michelle Ryan (God, those gorgeous eyes!) will have to trust the writers and producers to take her to that place where we'll finally be cheering for her.  Remember, Jaime Summers is a beloved character and Michelle Ryan has to push past the Lindsay Wagner love and make Jaime her own.

The rumor is that if the ratings for the show stay up and they continue on to season 2, Sackoff may become a permanent cast member, as Battlestar Galactica will be over.  You have no idea how much that breaks my heart - BSG ending, that is.

Katee Sackoff Rocks!!!!

I had mixed feelings about a remake. I like many others, loved Lindsay Wagner's Jaime, but I was intrigued with the idea and with having David Eick at the helm. Being a fan of BSG and Katee's Starbuck, I waited with baited breath. For the most part, I think it went well. Katee was great. She is awesome as a villian as I knew she would be, and Michelle Ryan did OK. She will need to get better as time goes on, but I think she will. I hope that Katee will remain a recurring character along with the other BSG alumni. I like many others am saddened by the soon to be ending of BSG, but I could get used to seeng Katee on BW on a regular basis especially if David Eick gets rid of the idea of a "Steve Austin" and focuses on Sarah Corvus!!!

I say make "Six Million Dollar Woman" as a prequel or alt. universe to "Bionic Woman". Have it be the story of Sarah Corvus.

Ryan Rocks

Ok, I am clearly in the minority here. I could not see anything good about the Sarah character and that actress in the least. She looks like a cross between Sally Kellerman and Gwyneth Paltrow....those lips were insane!!

Michelle Ryan, on the other hand.....HUBBA HUBBA! While I do miss Lindsay, and perhaps she will have a guest role somewhere along the line, I think I will be enjoying the series.

I adored MR in Jekyll, the BBC America Mini, she was so perfect. Now, to see her in something filled with action, was even better! So much so that I've even written a FF over at www.bionicwomanfansite.com -- under the name JadedRogue, check it out and tell me whatcha think...:)

New "Bionic Woman"

I watched the new "Bionic Woman" knowing fulwell that this new version was indeed going to be new with new cast, technology, plot, etc.  I was somewhat disappointed how the writers tried to give some background to Jaime, her life pre-bionic along with very little about the organization that made her bionic,  but at the same time..the information was given to us in a short amount of time that moved very rapidly.  I am a fan of the original and somewhat enjoy the new one. I guess for me my heart will always go out for the original because for me the original Jaime was my true heroine when I was growing up and was a great role model for all of us women. She had a good personality, a "girl next door" type of warmth, and always seemed to have a good relationship with those that cared for her..both personally and professionally. I always thought it would be really cool to be just like Jaime and also to have an older sister or friend like Jaime.  Jaime never told Oscar what to do with his mission plan for her (because she was not always happy where she had to go or what to do) BUT at the same time she knew she had obligations to fulfill; afterall, the OSI DID save her life.  I guess we all can hope that the new Jaime will grow on all of us as we learn more about her as she grows to learn about her life and how different her life will be from now on.

From a BIG fan of the orginal Jaime Sommers,

The first episode was brilliant for what it was, "the first episode".

When Sarah Corvus tells Jaime 'you have to do better then that' and then Jaime jumps back into the fight sent Sarah flying then ask Sarah in a somewhat flirtation, playful manor 'how am I doing now' Sarah replys in much dismay 'not bad, really not bad at all'.

Oh yeah that was....good. and yeah there is deffiantly something between Katee and Michelle Ryan.

Second episode SUCKED!!!! What more is there to say? besides lots. This second episode made me really want to quit the whole series, that is till I saw previews for next week.

Oh nice sexual orientation identification as one of her two "weird" friends blurts out 'saw a cute guy lets go check him out' ugh! assholes. (you'll see)
