Bad movies I love and other embarrassing confessionsWith the writers strike on the verge of pushing some of my favorite shows into repeats and the holidays fast approaching, I'm relying on my security blanket to keep me warm during the cold, hopefully not-too-long, new-episode-free nights. While globalgrrl gave you her picks yesterday for desert island TV, I've got some movie picks to help soothe the pain of reruns run amok that could be our future. It's my guilty pleasure movie collection. Entertainment Weekly's writers confessed their not-ready-for-the-Oscars list of favorites yesterday. And I've got mine today. Sure, these movies aren't award winners or, in some cases, even all that good. But every time they come on (or every time I pop the DVD in ... hey, I'm not proud), I can't help but watch.
Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985): I love this movie. Love it. The dancing. The hairstyles. The DayGlo. It's, like, totally awesome. I can still sing “Dancing in Heaven” from the final dance scene by heart. Plus, how can you beat seeing a young Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt and Shannen Doherty together in one film? Like I said, totally awesome.
Go Fish (1994): Yes, the acting is painful. Yes, the cinematography is amateurish. Yes, the headgear is atrocious. Who cares? It's still the first-ever lesbian film I went specifically to the video store to rent. How can you forget your first?
The Cutting Edge (1992): Toe pick! This movie combined three things I loved in high school: Ice skating, the Olympics and a spunky heroine.
Under the Tuscan Sun (2003): So there is nothing truly terrible about this film, but it's not really great. Still, I've watched it close to a dozen times and pop it in any time I feel a little dreamy. It combines three things I love as an adult: Tuscany, food and Sandra Oh.
Any James Bond movie: I shouldn't like these movies, what with their misogyny and chauvinism, but I can't help it. I'm a sucker for cool, calm and collected ... and a nice tuxedo. Now if only Ursula Andress were wearing the tux.
OK, I've shown you my embarrassing movie favorites; now you show me yours. Don't be shy. No one will judge you here ... much. Submitted by on November 14, 2007 - 6:35pm. |

Go Fish.
Under the Tuscan Sun? Aside for loving the life outta Diane Lane, I thought it was only a little prophetic to have Sandra Oh and Kate Walsh playing a lesbian couple...
I demand Dr. Addison Montgomery to go back working at Seattle Grace and hook up with Cristina Yang and just be done with it. A girl can dream?
I second that...
triple post here... geez
I second that...
double post here...sorry
I second that...
Ah to sleep.. perchance to dream! Seattle Grace is not the same without Addison. But back to the bad movies, I love Under the Tuscan Sun.. not just because it was the first time I really noticed Diane Lane and thus was born an appreciation for older women that I sadly lacked before, but it was a character who found happiness outside of a relationship. Of course they had to throw in traveling writer at the end to qualify for a hollywood budget.
So many
Most of my favorite movies are the cheesy type. Go Fish is good, but my favorites are of the horror and sci-fi variety.
I looooove The Bad Seed; evil little blonde-pigtailed girls and amazing overacting = best. movie. ever.
I also love Children of the Corn, I think it was the first horror movie I ever saw.
I adore the Ginger Snaps series. They are so horrifically bad, yet strangly compelling (plus, Emily Perkins is lovely, as is Katherine Isabelle).
I also love The Craft and any other Neve Campbell movies.
The Fifth Element is one of my all-time favorites (I wouldnt've added it, but apparently a lot of people hate it).
Ummm, and I'll watch anything with a great title (like "The Gingerdead Man" or "Santa's Slay", how could you pass those up?) or with an actress I like (I have sat through many a crappy movie for a pretty girl. Yes, I know I'm shallow.)
Neve Obsession
Yes, I have a Neve Obsession, too! I'm glad I'm not alone. So many people give me funny looks when I say how much I love her in just about everything. And I, too, suffer through movies for pretty women.
As for bad movies, name one I don't love.. Okay, that's overstepping. I love "You Stupid Man," "She's the Man," "The Truth About Jane," "Starship Troopers," "The New Guy," "Wild Things" (although I think it's good), every made for Disney Channel Movie including "Wish Upon a Star" and "Xenon: Girl of the 21st Century". And yes, even "Cadet Kelly."
There are many, many more. But one look through my extensive dvd collection reveals all. Anyway, thanks for lovin' Neve. I hope you've seen "When Will I Be Loved"... if you haven't, you should.
Ginger Snaps!
Almost no one knows Ginger Snaps! (Sometimes I feel like a cinema missionary for this film, though). Srsly the best franchise sequel EVER too.
And I totally wore out my copy of The Craft in HS.
Thinking I may actually have to watch the other films you list because well I haven't seen them. Though I did love, at one point in my life, Village of the Damned, so the Bad Seed sounds great.
Spreading the Ginger Snaps love!
I didn't think the first one was bad at all! I'm always willing to admit when movies I love are bad, because most of the time, they are, and that's why I love them. But "Ginger Snaps" is one of those movies that I like because it's so good. Okay, so the wolf is kinda weird looking, but the dialogue is freaking priceless.
The second one left a lot to be desired, though, even though I liked it. And the third was one of those movies that I love even though it's so bad, but I think that's only because a) I'm so attached to the Fitzgeralds and b) Emily Perkins is effing adorable, especially in Victorian era attire. Mmm...
Yes
Everyone needs to see The Bad Seed, because it's the best ever :) 'Specially if you're a Village of the Damned fan. (I love evil little blonde children, as I used to be one)
I'm so glad there are other Ginger Snaps fans around. I agree that the first one really wasn't that bad. I think it could've been actually "good", if it had not been for the craptastic special effects or the occasional cringe-worthy dialog (still love it, though). I actually really likes the second one, probably because it was so Bridget-oriented. Also, I was a big fan of Ghost, even though she was totally evil. The third one, though...I thought was almost unwatchable. I don't know, it just didn't do much for me. But, yes, Emily Perkins is adorable as the little werewolf-slayer that could.
I'll say this really fast ...
The Sound of Music -- It's what I watch when I need an old fashioned pick me up.
The more modern movie I'm now hooked on is "Saving Face"
Bad Movies?
Oh! How could I forget?!
Absolutely, Flashdance!
Deathbyblonde, I am so with you on that! It has all the above 'highlights' plus an incredibly bizarre food seduction scene that had us all crying with laughter last time I watched it with some friends. Love it!
My top guilty fave has to be Soapdish though - Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Kline, Carrie Fisher, Robert Downey Jr, Sally Field, Elisabeth Shue. Awesome. "Of course I'm an egomaniac! I have America's Sweetheart climbing up my drainpipe!"
"I go online sometimes, but everyone's spelling is really bad, and it's depressing."
The Long Kiss Goodnight
I have no explanation for why I love to watch this movie over and over. I'm not a huge Geena Davis fan (though I like her just fine). I'm not an action movie freak... But, every time this movie comes on TV I find myself glued to the set. I finally bought the DVD so I could indulge myself whenever I want. Strange...
love this movie
By Renny Harlin...
the world's finest director of awesome sucky action movies. Ok, I haven't seen Mindhunters or Exorcist: The Beginning, and the best thing in Driven was that scene of Gina Gershon, um, walking, but Deep Blue Sea, Cutthroat Island, Die Hard 2 and TLKG? All effin' bee-rilliant films.
I do have excellent taste in movies but... I've seen every single James Bond, I love Judge Dredd and Demolition Man with Stallone, the Under Siege movies, the Blade movies, the Tomb Raiders (well, that's easy to explain), the Mad Max movies, the Terminator movies and a lot of other stuff starring the Governor, the Resident Evil movies, Waterworld (yikes) and last but not least, Domino. Who am I kidding, that's not all at all.
As for comedies, Romy and Michelle, Eurotrip, White Chicks, A Night at the Roxbury, Strangers with Candy, OSS 117, Zoolander.
Flashdance and every other silly movie that involves dancing (though Flashdance is #1).
And The Beach. Now my conscience feels clean.
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion
OK
Allright Dorothy, just to help you in your hours of need, I'll fess up to mine:
Ever After with Drew Barrymore (don't know why but can't get enough of watching it when it's on, just love it).
Eurotrip (my 'serious' friends can't believe it either)
Mars Attacks (a few friends actually stopped speaking to me temporarily when I tricked them into seeing it)
The Fifth Element (that scene when the alien opera singer is....well singing while simultaneously we're seeing Leeloo giving a serious ass kicking to the 'bad' guys is PRICELESS)
But, that's enough of a confession already, so I'll stop :)
Ditto!
Mars Attacks
Good, bad movies...
Sorry ladies, I may be in the distinct minority here, but hated Go Fish. Can't get into it even on a campy level. It's just plain bad.
Two movies I really enjoy even though they're both one-star flicks are She-Devil and Feds. As for the former, I find the caustic, sarcastic Roseanne to be funny in just about anything she does, and as for the latter, it's worth watching just for the scene where the demure Mary Gross poses in front of the mirror with her gun, a la DeNiro in Taxi Driver. Great stuff.
It's my personal theory that these two movies got panned primarily because of their relentless feminist slants. The vast majority of movie critics are still men, and they were worried they'd look wimpy (or gay, perhaps?) if they admitted to liking such militant stuff.
Just a theory...
Movies I am embarrassed to claim:
OKay, Flashdance. I love seeing Jennifer Beals work up a sweat and slither out of her bra. Desert Hearts. "She just reached in a put a string of lights around my heart." "You can't win if you don't play." Cheesy and just so wrong of me: Personal Best. I know, the guy gets the girl in the end. All those disturbingly voyeuristic crotch shots. But all those legs! Mad Maxx movies. Senseless, gory violence. I know. Is it bad that I liked Pretty Woman? Hooker with a heart of gold, cold, unfeeling businessman with unresolved issues who becomes the knight in shining armor she never believed in. Yes, it is bad. But I still love those shopping scenes.
The Hot Chick
Rachel McAdams and Anna Faris. 'Nuff said.
~It means pride.~
Same here...
Yep, I'll admit it, I love 'The Hot Chick'. I'll also admit to loving 'The Benchwarmers'. These two movies are bashed, but I find them to be hilarious.

The Sound of Music
This has to be the best movie of all time...I love, love, love The Sound of Music...it always makes me happy when I watch it.
"Oh my god I love your bins, they're so random"
Anything by John Waters
Campy 70s Movies
(wow- I thought I was the only one who had a secret thing for 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'!)
I have a not-so-secret passion for bad movies from the 60s/70s, like Ai Nu (or Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan) (1972, Yuen Chor), Vampyros Lesbos (1971, Jess Franco), Myra Breckinridge (1970, Michael Same), Desperate Living (John Waters, 1977), Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970, Russ Meyer), The Big Doll House (1971, Jack Hill), Score (1973, Radley Metzger), Flesh Gordon (1974, Michael Benvenviste & Howard Ziehm), The Erotic Adventures of Zorro (1974, William Allen Castleman & Robert Freeman), Space Thing (1968, Byron Mabe), She Devils on Wheels, (1968, Herschell Gordon Lewis), Chained Girls (1965, Joseph P Mawra). Oh, and the less said about Double Agent 73 (1974, Doris Wishman), the better.)
I should probably stop now, I've said enough to incriminate me already.
The cutting edge
lesbian without borders
Oh my
Seeing all these made me need to add more:
Mars Attacks: duh, who could hate this?
Romy and Michelle: I had such a crush on Romy when I was little.
Bring it On: I think everyone here must agree with me. Eliza Dushku...yum...
Anything with Anna Faris or by John Waters.
I need inviso-text
The Pirate Movie
Don't let life pass you by, without "treating" yourself to this gem.
Oh how I wish Samuel L. Jackson was in more movies about snakes
My #1 "bad movie that I still watch regularly and actually spent months searching for before I found it in some random music store in the East Village" is Spiceworld. I am seriously, totally in love with this movie, and I will watch it right before I go see the Spice Girls in concert. Because I am that awesome.
While I don't think The Fifth Element is a bad movie, many, many people do, and just for that I have to add it to my list. I mean, come on! Milla Jovovich practically naked, Bruce Willis at his smarmy best, and EVIL GARY OLDMAN! Amazing.
Mars Attacks is just one of those movies you have to see to believe, especially since Tom Jones is in it.
One time, I watched Beauty Shop 25 times in a single month. How I did that, with the paper-thin plot, my five classes, a thesis, a part-time job, and a part-time internship, I have no idea. But for some reason, I kept watching it over and over again, laughing at the same jokes over and over again. Maybe I was delusional from all the stress.
Finally, I find humor in the oddest things sometimes, which might explain why I can find enjoyment in Snakes on a Plane and White Chicks.

The Fifth Element: thumbs up
Ditto
to your last few choices. Though I still can't get through Snakes on a Plane, I just can't get enough of Beauty Shop. I'm still quoting that movie, as recently as today. I dunno what to say! Everytime, it's on, I can't change the channel. And Darn Showtime for the reruns!! LOL
And I concur with White Chicks. Why? It was just plain funny.
And, Soul Plane was silly, not an Oscar winner by any stretch of the imagination, but I liked that one too.
EDIT
Oh, I just remembered, Sister Act. I don't think it was well received but I sang along to that movie! Sister Mary Clarence AKA Whoopi brings back memories.
Don't be a slave to the unavailable!
Testify!
OH MY GOD SISTER ACT!
And I am so, so glad someone else thinks White Chicks is funny. My ex thought I was crazy for laughing at it.

"I am sooo freaking pissed!"
Sister Act
?
Milla Jovovich practically naked
Did you see the same version I did?
Snakes On A Plane = pure screaming joy.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
Hmm.
I don't recall seeing any overt boobage...
Maybe my memory is bad?

I LOVE SPICEWORLD. It's priceless.
I saw it in theaters with my best friend when it came out. We died of happiness.
Victoria: "I can't decide. Should I go with the little gucci dress, the little gucci dress or the little gucci dress?"
Emma: "I think the little gucci dress!"
Sporty, as she cycles on a stationary bike: "Why do people stereotype us all the time?"
The ass-less chaps, ugh. The ridiculous bus. The hysterical re-enactment of the bomb going off on said bus? The weird side story with the pregnant friend? Aliens? The newspaper dude who spits too much? The end credits!!! It was all too good to be true.
Also, from someone else's comment, Bring It On is a great film. Great. I refuse to say that it is anything but art in its purest, queerest, silliest form. I even watch the sequels. There, I said it!
Bloody Sunday drivers! It's only Saturday!
I love the part where they don't have enough money for special effects, so they use cheap toys to show the bus jumping over Tower Bridge. Priceless!
Also: MEATLOAF IS THE BUS DRIVER. How can anyone hate a movie with him in it?
"Out of the box is where I live." -Starbuck
Spice World = Genius.
That is my favorite part of the movie. I cackled hysterically when I saw that.
Additionally, who doesn't love the Loaf? I ain't proud. And he taught me 'bout the, quote, mystery and the muscle of love, end quote. <3.
My pick is "Trapped in the Closet." If that movie isn't brilliant, I don't know what is...
Oh. Man. I just found my

Give it up for B-flicks... Some of my favorites:

Everything's Relative
my list...
Fifth Element

......... though honestly, none of them really embarrass me :) I still need to see The Pirate Movie!
Take the bad...
What is it with Go Fish? Everyone thinks it is bad yet you can't stop watching it (me included).
I enjoy most movies with the Troma label.
Ginger Snaps is good, as is Ginger Snaps: Unleashed and Ginger Snaps: Back. Ok, not Emmy material, but still.
"Bad jokes are us, ur me."
For Shame
I like J.Lo movies.
And not just the good ones...uh, one (Selena).
I'm talking Maid in Manhattan and The Wedding Planner.
::Shakes Head in Shame::
Favorite Bad Movies
Sharkey's Machine - starring Burt Reynolds and Rachel Ward in her first part. When I heard Rachel's voice, before they even showed her face, I got really REALLY horny. That hasn't happened before or since. I still love Rachel! :)
Night of the Comet - cheesy B movie about everyone dying in the world except for a young woman who passed out in the movie theatre. The acting was iffy, the production values were non-existent but I loved this move.
The Hot Chick - very dumb movie that is only redeemed by Rachel McAdams.
Somewhere in Time - one of my all time favorites. The first week it came out in the theatres I saw it four times and cried hysterically evertime. The movie was over the top, not very well acted but SOOOOOOOOOOOOO ROMANTIC! :)
Starship Troopers
