Annie Leibovitz sprinkles more pixie dust

Annie Leibovitz could photograph a rock or, more challenging still, The Rock and make it look fascinating. So watching her turn famous faces into iconic Disney characters for the theme park’s Year of a Million Dreams campaign has been a real treat. Now that I’ve seen the third round of images, I’ve upgraded the experience from treat to gourmet meal. On the menu are Tina Fey, Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Biel, Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Lopez. Seriously, who has a fork?

The Peter Pan scene features Gisele as Wendy Darling with dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov as Peter Pan and Tina flitting about as Tinker Bell. Tina as Tink? I’ve just died and gone to Neverland.

Jessica Biel gets in touch with nature in her shot as Pocahontas. Hmm, while Jessica looks great in her buckskin togs, I’m not really feeling her as the Native American princess. Somehow, when I look at her, I just don’t think about the rich culture of the Powhatan Indians.

Looking at her does, however, make me think I should dust off my free weights and start sticking to my New Year’s resolution to “Work out more.”

Aladdin did double duty on this shoot as the movie inspires both Whoopi and Jenny from the Block’s sets. Jennifer was Jasmine to her husband Marc Anthony’s Aladdin as they took a magic carpet ride over the Arabian desert.

Though, who knows how long the ride lasted with Whoopi as the cheeky Genie tagging along.

Gosh, those are fun. Now I can’t wait to see who is next. Kate Winslet as Sleeping Beauty? Zhang Ziyi as Mulan? Ann Coulter as Cruella de Vil?

Kate Winslet as Sleeping

Kate Winslet as Sleeping Beauty? *DIES* That would be, if you'll pardon the trite Disney talk, a dream come true. A favourite, gorgeous actress as the star of my favourite Disney film!

The Pochahontas thing (that photo shoot AND the actual film) is kind of a sore spot with me, given my Native heritage... *grits teeth*

Oh please ...

Enough already with the racial stereotyping! My mother, who is a REGISTERED member of the Powahatan tribe, looks African American. Many of her fellow tribal members look either Black or white due to years of inter-racial relationships and marriages. Hell, Wayne Newton is part Powahatan, for god's sake.

Also, in the context of these photos - if it is wrong for Ms. Biel to pose as Pocahantas, then it should be verboten for Marc Antony, Jennifer Loper and Whoopi Goldberg to be posing as Arab characters.

The reason it's not is because these are acts of the imagination, and a very tasty imagination at that. More please!

Um, I didn't say that I had

Um, I didn't say that I had a problem with Pocahontas being portrayed by a white woman. I've been around other Native people my whole life; I know perfectly well that not everyone looks stereotypically Native American, especially since that's true of myself.

I'm not the only person in the world who didn't particularly like the way Native Americans were portrayed in that movie, and if you don't agree with me I don't really care. But I'm not going to argue with you about it...

Annie Lebovitz is a genius

Annie Lebovitz is a genius photographer and every picture she takes is just stunning.

I would really love to see Portia De Rossi as Rapunzel.

Oh please, part deux

Given this is Ms. Snarker's opinion. Granted. My point is that Powahatans are a diverse group. In addition, there has been a great deal of confusion as to what the actual Pocahontas really looked like so casting Ms. Biel makes as much sense as anyone else, in the context of this photo shoot.

My post was specifically about the photo shoot.

Full disclosure: I haven't seen the movie. Which is why I didn't mention it, at all, at any time, in my post. Which begs the question as to why you think I am arguing with you about the movie. How can I? Why would I? Haven't seen it, didn't talk about it in my post, didn't even remember that Disney had made a movie (1995?) till you brought it up in your reply. I have no earthly idea as to whether or not I agree or disagree with your assessment of it.

My guess, from reading the imdb outline (Mel Gibson *shudder*) is I didn't miss anything but a spike in my blood pressure; but the topic at hand here really is Ms. Leibovitz's lovely work.

Umm...

I think you missed the joke there. Ms. Snarker (and, please, forgive me if I misrepresent your intentions here), I believe, was simply cracking a joke. She was implying that Jessica Biel's good looks distract the viewer from thinking about anything remotely related to Native American heritage. *Other* things were going through her mind while looking at those photographs.

wow

She's such an example for me! Her pictures are sooo gorgeous, wish I could take pictures like that! Maybe some day. Tina as Tinkerbell is just so cute! And the one of Whoopi I love too.

A picture....is worth a thousand words.

Wish I had a picture to convey my impressions.  The photos of Annie are adorable and whimsical.  We spend too much time being PC and not enough time enjoying things in front of our faces.  Lighten up....it's a fantasy photo shoot not History 101.

moche

à part ça j'adore afterellen et je m'y régale tous les jours ! thanks ! afterellen is so important to me !

Ha!

C'est un peu trop, n'est-ce pas?

Je n'aime pas beaucoup Annie Leibovitz, mais j'ai aimé ses photos pour Vogue inspirées par Alice in Wonderland...

By the way, I apologise if my French is terrible; I'm a total novice taking the opportunity to practice.

I miss..

I miss the less "Disney/Hollywood production" photographs of years ago. Whoopi in a tub of milk. Anyone remember? Or John and Yoko? These new works are beautiful and grandiose but also very distracting from the message of who a person is through the captured image. I love feeling a person's humanity shine through a photograph, here I just feel like it is a movie poster image. It is for Disney and it is about fantasy, but I guess I just love her lyrical and not theatrical works better.
