Alicia Witt joins the ladies of "Law & Order"

As a person who gorges herself daily on a smorgasbord of pop culture (thank heavens for gossip antacids, they’re a real lifesaver), it’s the rare day that something slips past my plate. So imagine my surprise when I read, belatedly, that Alicia Witt was joining Law & Order: Criminal Intent. How could I have missed that tasty morsel?

You remember Alicia Witt, right? She was the acerbic, red-haired daughter of flighty, drama-queen Cybill on the mid-'90s sitcom by the same name. No, not ringing any bells? Cybill wore a silk bathrobe a lot. Still no? Fine. But if you do remember the show you, like me, are probably wishing The L Word had asked Alicia to join the cast instead of Cybill Shepherd. (Before you judge, it’s not the age thing. It’s the over-the-top, scenery-chewing thing. OK, sure, the red hair helps.)

Alicia joins CI as a temporary replacement for Julianne Nicholson, who is on maternity leave, as the show moves from NBC to USA this season. She will play Det. Nola Falacci, the new partner for Det. Mike Logan (Chris Noth). I know I should say more about this, but I got sidetracked fantasizing about Alicia wielding a gun and cuffing bad guys. Perhaps a plot will come up with a female suspect and we could even get to see some frisking ... Right, sorry, I’m back.

Now, I like Julianna on CI. She forever endeared herself to me and countless lesbians the world over by flirting with a lesbian mechanic on her first episode last season. And then there’s the short hair. And the freckles. And the big, big gun ... OK, really, I’m back. I promise.

As a fan of the crime procedural, I’ve watched all the Law & Order shows on-and-off. The formula couldn’t be simpler, and for a while CI was even my favorite. But unlike Law & Order: SVU, the problem with CI was that the female partner never got as much to do as the male lead. Pity poor Kathryn Erbe, who has spent six seasons playing second fiddle to Vincent D’Onofrio’s idiosyncratic antics.

Still, I like almost all the actresses Dick Wolf & Co. have hired for his Law & Order empire (particularly on the spin-offs). And, just so she doesn’t feel left out, here is Mariska Hargitay’s latest promo shot for SVU, now with a hint of cleavage. Well hello, officer.

CI

I am not a fan of L&O CI, it's not very interesting.  I did like Katherine Erbe, but you're right, she played second fiddle to Vicent's character.  Alas, I watch SVU for Mariska Hargitay.  I love her character and she holds her own with Chris Meloney..who has the Golden Globe :)

Perfect hair

Alicia Witt did have fantastic hair on Cybill. I was always wondering, not only how she got it to be so shiny, but how she got perfect curls without a hint of frizz.

Yeah, I think deep thoughts when I'm watching TV shows.

OMG!!!

Juilianna or Alicia?! Juilianna or Alicia?! Juilianna or Alicia?! Juilianna or Alicia?! Juilianna or Alicia?! JULIANNA OR ALICIA?!!

*brain pops from impossible choice*

As an official L&O junkie, I have had a crush on Juilanna Nicholson's character since she first turned up (not that the flirting with the mechanic didn't hurt either! *grin*). I keep trying not to read too much into the fact that they haven't said anything about her character's preferences, as I try not to hold my breath after what Dick Wolf did to Elizabeth Rohm's character 'Serena Southerlyn'. But it's really HARD!

That all said, I did love Alicia Witt in 'Cybill', and it looks like she is going to be positively drool-worthy in 'CI' (do hope they allow her to exercise her sarcastic wit though, as that seriously made her even more attractive in 'Cybill').

The only conumdrum is that in getting back Julianna's character, it will mean losing Alicia's character ... can I vote just for dumping Chris Noth entirely, and having the two of them 'partner' up?

*grin*

I liked Alicia Witt in her

I liked Alicia Witt in her one and only good roll in the offbeat comedy "Playing Mona Lisa".

She grew up nice :D

I hate those shows. They are not very true to life. But I would love it if there were women around here who looked like that and dressed like that. Unfortunately, the guys here are all boring, right wing, conservative... well... men!

I liked her in Cybill. Loved her when she played Alia Atreides, the creepy little sister of Paul Atreides (Kyle Maclachlan) in the 1984 movie "Dune".

-If there are no further questions I'll start my reign of terror now.

She has grown up nicely...

I remember her from 'Cybill' and yeah...the red hair always does it. lol

I'm more of an SVU fan, because after all, Mariska Hargitay and Diane Neal...who needs any other reason? I always prefer the Noth/his partner pairing because D'Onofrio makes me feel claustrophobic with his twitching...and because Noth's female counterpart says and does more, in my view anyway.

Can't wait :)

Yes, another redhead with freckles

Happy to see another fellow redhead on the little screen. I love the L&O series. All of them, of course SVU is my favorite.

Fun

Alicia Witt played a teenage lesbian (and, here we go, murderer) in the little seen 1994 film Fun.

I will watch anything Alicia Witt is in

I will watch anything Alicia Witt is in, ever, because of Fun. If I can face Mr Holland's Opus I can handle Criminal Intent.
