And you thought your mom was badEllen Burstyn has come a long way, baby. In 2000, she was popping pills in Requiem for a Dream, and now she’ll be pushing pills in Tim Robbins’ Possible Side Effects on Showtime.
According to Variety, Burstyn will play the matriarch of the Hunt family, a powerful but dysfunctional brood that runs a drug company that gets in a heap of trouble. If this series is anything less than fantastic, I’ll be shocked. It’s possible that my expectations are high because the pharmaceutical industry is such an easy target or because Ellen Burstyn and Tim Robbins are incredibly gifted. As much as I hate to admit it, I can’t get enough of evil mothers — big screen and small. Save your two-bit psychoanalysis for someone who cares. Yes, yes, my relationship with my own mother is far from perfect. There, I’ve let you in. Can we move on? It can’t just be my own warped relationship with my mother that disturbs and thrills when I watch Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate or Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People.
These chilling portrayals of mothers are so disturbing because mothers are the ultimate nurturers. Their love is unconditional and boundless, right? And when we see mothers who supposedly defy nature, we wonder how this could be. Is nothing sacred? Yet, some of the most memorable characters in film on television have involved mothers gone wrong. I can’t be the only one who has a list of mean mommies at the ready. Who are your favorite evil-doing mothers of the screen? Submitted by on October 7, 2008 - 11:00am. |

Mommie Dearest
Well whoever played the original Mommie Dearest in the movie about Joan Crawford (was that Faye Dunaway i always forget!?).
Another one that springs to mind, and just cause i watched a rerun last night, Atia of the Julii in Rome. Wow that woman was an über bitch, most especially to her children, lol. Killing her daughters husband and pimping out her son to Ceaser, an all around pleasant lady ;-).
Celia on Weeds! If that is not a mean mommie then i dont know anymore, lol. Elizabeth Perkins played her very very well, lol, calling your daughter ugly and fat every chance you get would get you on the list right :-P.
Last one that i can think of now is Katherine Hepburn in the adaptation of Tennesee Williams's play, Suddenly, Last Summer. She was a mean mommie, lol. Sure she wasnt technically Taylor's mother, but she was Montgommery's mother, lol. Very good portrayel!
Lol, i love these characters though, i have no clue why..... Give me an hour and ill probably have some more personal favs :D
NO WIRE HANGERS!!!
Yes, it was indeed Faye Dunaway who played Joan Crawford to nightmarish perfection in 'Mommie Dearest'. Hilarious movie! While being shocking and sad at the same time of course....
Hip To The Beat, Mommie-O!
Faye Dunaway was so hot in
Faye Dunaway was so hot in Bonnie & Clyde.

Erm
Didn't Meryl Streep play the guy's dodgy mum in The Manchurian Candidate, or was that a remake of a previous version? Either way Meryl Streep was really freaky in that role!
Angela Lansbury was in the
Angela Lansbury was in the 1962 version, Meryl Streep was in the 2004 version with Denzel Washington and Liev Schrieber. But yes, freaky psycho lady. She does that very well...
~Can't everything be like before when it overcomes me?~
Mart Tyler Moore
In Ordinary People, definitely! I cringed almost everytime she opened her mouth. It was so weird seeing her in that role, yet I think that's what made it so good.
Piper Laurie (Margaret White) in Carrie. Holy be-Jesus! Crazy bitch she was in that film.
Kathleen Turner
Jennifer Saunders as Edina
Jennifer Saunders as Edina in Absolutely Fabulous, she's hilarious, but she's so mean to her daughter.
Edina reminds me of my own
