The Weekly Geek: Adorkable V-day ideas for lesbian web junkies

We’re quickly coming upon Valentine’s Day, and whether you think it’s just dandy or a poor excuse for filling the coffers of greeting card companies, it’s hard to escape, especially if you have a special lady (or a special crush) who needs impressing. But dinner and candy and flowers are so cliché, as is hosting a V-Day horror fest with Ben and Jerry and four of your best (single) friends.

If you’re looking for alternatives, I’ve gathered a couple of tech-y project ideas, apps and websites that should help you get the results you’re looking for on this Saturday.

If you’re looking to celebrate: Make her a music video. There’s nothing more adorkable than a cheesy, cute music video of couple-y clips set to your girl’s favorite song. If you have a video camera (or a few good phone camera clips), a computer, and a tiny bit of know-how, you can produce a video that’s sure to bring a smile to her face.

If you’re short on resources, don't fret — you can easily use still pictures and a free video editing program (like iMovie on Macs or the free “lite” version of Loiloscope for PCs). You can also use the superb JayCut for online editing/storage. Just grab a song (Indigo Girls, anyone?), a few cute pictures (take 100 or so if you’ve got them) and start dragging and dropping. Burn to a DVD and voilà! You have an ultra personal, super cute Valentine’s Day gift that she’ll love.

If you’re not so happily single: Try iFlirt, a new, .99 iPhone App for romantic advice. With everything from slick pick-up lines to quick advice for dating snafus, you can be armed and ready for your next outing at ladies’ night. Just be sure to use a little lesbian common sense with the advice — it’s (lamely) segregated into “his and hers” sections.

If you’d rather see this particular holiday drop off the face of the earth: You can always amuse yourself with Anti-Valentine’s Day E-cards, courtesy of singer Jamey Johnson. There’s nothing like sending a like-minded friend a sepia-toned card that reads: “It’s Valentines Day and love is in the air. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.”

You can personalize the cards, which come with all sorts of hilarious/grotesque images and a sample of “Mowin’ Down The Roses”, but one word of advice — stay clear of the ex’s inbox. One mean E-card equals about seven pathetic drunk dials.

What are your plans for V-Day?

My Romantic Attempt

So I'm attempting to be romantic this year. My girlfriend is usually the more romantic one. And artistic one. But this year I decided to get her the obligatory heart-shaped box full of candy (I hope she shares them!) as well as a card that plays a love song. But inside the card I made a little pocket that holds about 15 strips of pretty paper where I wrote down the reasons why I love her so. I made the strips all nice with cute stamps, patterned paper, and sparkly gel pens.

Good??

Awww...

The little strips of paper thing sounds so cute!

I for one am not a fan of valentines day. I just ignore it. I plan on spending most of it asleep, then at a rugby match, then asleep again.

that sounds

perfect! what better way to spend the sappiest day of the year than pounding people into the ground? rugby=pleasure w/o protection!

Anti-VDay E-cards

LOL! I just sent the "Thank goodness Valentine's Day is on a Saturday. I don't have to send myself flowers at the office." one to my (also not-so-happily single) friend.

Stewie: Listen, why don't you save yourself years of sexual ambiguity and get fitted for a pair of Doc Martens and a plaid flannel shirt?

My sis wrote her girlfriend

My sis wrote her girlfriend a song, its really sweet and sounds good too as she recorded it in her college studio.

Just thought that was a nice thing to do

Going all out

My friend and I each have a new romance going on and teamed up to wow them: Blue Man Group Tickets for the matinee, then dinner by our onesies, and then a horse-drawn carriage ride around Boston, and THEN a pub-crawl to sing karaoke and play pool. Ending with a hotel room near the harbor, champagne, strawberries, and a lily, a la Imagine Me & You. It's been three years since I've had a sweetie on this wretched holiday, so I thought I'd do it up :)

Not so much...

I don't care too much for Valentine's day. Except that my mom *still* buys me some sort of cutesy heart boxers, a tradition she started when I was twelve and which I find ridiculously hilarious. I have way too many... However, I think I'm going to see the Friday 13th movie with all my single friends. So that should be entertaining. :D

Your mom is too adorable.

Your mom is too adorable. I'm going to see Friday the 13th, too. I love that they're using Valentine's day in the tv spots:

"This year
Saturday February 14th
will belong to lovers.
But Friday the 13th
Belongs TO HIM."

what starts in chaos, ends in chaos

Indeed!

Haha, yeah. That was definitely the main appeal. That and it's more Jason, which equals happiness.

Valentines Gay

Im spending it with my 3 best gay guy mates, we're having a slumber party with cocktails, face masks and sci-fi slashers.

Spending valentines with gay guys sad? I get 3 bunches of flowers, 3 cards and 3 bottles of wine every year :P

Embrace Valentines with friends rather than mope alone. :D

ignore it

my personal opinion that valentine's is actually the least romantic day of the year to do something special. it's THE day that you absolutely have to do something for your significant other thereby removing all specialness from any act. required romance isn't true romance. if you can't do SOMETHING on feb 14, then you prolly have no business being in a relationship.

that said, i'll definitely be sleeping in, then i'll begin teaching my 12yo sis how to drive.

I need to stock up on

I need to stock up on haagen-daaz or whatever the current fancy ice cream is. ;P

I think the film "Carrie" might be on the cards too!

Our anniversary is on

Our anniversary is on Valentines lame ass Day by accident. We were hungover from me celebrating moving into my then new apartment. I guess the effect of the alcohol finally broke her down after my three months of persistance. Three days later we realised that she said yes on Valentines Day lol. But, to celebrate our two year we will probably just go out for dinner and relax with some movies. We agreed since it's right between christmas and our bdays, we aren't buying gifts. Maybe just some candy. :)

What about happily single?

Those are good ideas and all, but some of us are happy to have a Self-Love Day this year!

I won't be particularly hi-tech, but this evening I'm going to stop working at six, make my favorite meal (mushroom stroganoff), open a bottle of wine, and watch Paris Je T'Aime.
