Renee O'Connor saves the world (again)

In need of a Renee O'Connor fix? I know I am, which is why I'll set aside my usual aversion to monster movies and tune into the SciFi Channel's Monster Ark this Saturday night at 9 p.m. And it's also why I turned up bright and early for a phone interview with Renee Wednesday morning, where she talked about the film, working with Xena co-star Lucy Lawless in the film Bitch Slap, and of course, how she feels about all of us at AfterEllen.com.

To be fair, it sounds like Monster Ark is quite a bit more than a monster movie. "I like stories with strong women characters," Renee told us. "Women who change the world." And in Monster Ark she plays Ava, an archaeologist who does just that while working on a dig to uncover Noah's first ark, and inadvertently unleashing, well, a monster.

Ava is a deeply spiritual person, and her quest for the ark is part of her own journey of faith. Her ex-husband, Nicholas (Tim DeKay), on the other hand, is a hard-headed scientist, whose agenda is very different. "We have some friction between us, some unresolved matters," Renee said, and then laughed. "And we try to resolve them while — yes — saving humanity."

This all sounds suspiciously like a dynamic we've seen before, the one between Xena and Gabrielle on Xena: Warrior Princess.

"Xena the warrior was always pragmatic; it was about getting the job done," Renee said. "Gabrielle was more about the open heart, and trying to save everyone ... Gabrielle wants to save Xena, and Ava wants to save Nicholas."

Speaking of Xena, are we ever going to see Renee work with co-star Lucy Lawless again? Why yes, Renee said; we are. And soon, in the wacked out babes-with-guns flick Bitch Slap, due out in December.

The brain child of some old pals from the Xena crew, the film was the first on-screen reunion of the two friends in many years. "Lucy and I had cameos where we played nuns," Renee said, "and we joked around later that we were there to bless the set because they were all damned ... It's been a long time since I've actually worked with Lucy on a film set together, but it's like picking up a bike again. She and I have a shorthand. We can literally say two words to each other and we know what we're saying. That just felt really nice."

Renee also said the film has something more for lesbian fans than just the cast of hot pistol-packing, butt-kicking babes. "The little cameos that Lucy and I played in Bitch Slap were a real treat directly for all you guys out there, you know," she laughed. "I have a couple lines you guys are going to love."

Renee said she's also starring in an upcoming web series called Ark (no relation to the film), a sci-fi story from in which she plays a female hero trapped in an incomprehensible reality. The series is the result of a partnership between online content producer 60Frames and independent comic book publisher Oni Press. Created by Robbie Thompson and developed by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah of Freaks and Geeks fame, it's scheduled to premiere next year.

If watching Renee on screen just isn't enough for you, how about acting with her? Renee told us she's producing and starring in a short film she describes as the "raw and emotional" story of a man who becomes reconciled with his estranged son while he's dying. Renee plays his daughter, and if you'd like to be an extra and live in the Los Angeles area, send your photo and contact info to Renee at ROC Productions, 1601 North Sepulveda Blvd. #612, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.

Some straight women with two kids might not exactly embrace being the idol of two generations of lesbian fans, but that's definitely not Renee, who says she appreciates all of us at AfterEllen.com. "I'm constantly looking for projects they're going to love, definitely looking for those little gems that will have them laughing and rolling and smiling," she said. "I'm always talking about you all and how fortunate I am that you've been so supportive, so thank you. Thank you."

I hope that "I have a couple

I hope that "I have a couple lines you guys are going to love" is code for "I am totally going to be making out with Lucy Lawless."

It's funny coz Renee and

It's funny coz Renee and Lucy both are such figureheads for high standards in my opinion. I wasn't really interested in seeing Bitch Slap (appart from for the obvious reason) and i kind of figured that it'd be pretty much the men's lesbian fantasy steriotype, but as soon as i saw the nun picture i was in. We all know these girls wouldn't do anything stupid!

Hope the couple of lines are ___________ <Renee

Awesome!

Yes!! I love renee and lucy of course. Every Xena fan does. It feels great to say that going to the xena cons has been a yearly tradition for me since I turned 18. ( I went for my 18th b-day with my dad.) Good luck to you and I want to check out both movies. Now, if only Xena could be released on blu-ray I would be in heaven ;)

What a great present!  I

What a great present!  I was counting down the years until I turned 18 and could go to the con forever, only to have 18 come up and realize that now the money I'd been saving for fun stuff like that has to go towards textbooks.

Anyway, just wanted to note how awesome it is that your dad's that supportive.  My dad. . . paid the parking ticket I'd gotten the week before for my 18th birthday, LOL.  He'd freak if I asked him to go to the Xena con.

Renee, anyone?

Definitely want my Renee fix! wondering if anyone know Space Channel in Vancouver will show Monster Ark too?

I'v never been to Xena con., still hoping one day they'll come to Vancouver, then i'll more likely to attend.

ROC and LL as nuns, yeah, those two together is always something to look forward to.

I can't wait to see all of

I can't wait to see all of Renee's new projects. She's been missing from our screens for far too long!! I have a feeling I am about to be spoilt though...nuns, sci fi, drama...anybody got a rent-free hut in LA so I can be one of those extras? And Caty...YEAH, she DOES keep getting hotter...

Xena hookup?

question did these two ever hook up on Xena

CrashCart9's picture

Explicitly?  No.

Explicitly?  No.  Implicitly?  Depends on how you read it.  Most of us on here would answer you with a resounding YES for the latter, I think, but it's mostly (heavy handed) subtext.

**sigh** Thanks for the Renee fix...

...but it's just not enough!

I watched Xena for yearsssssssss, and while I love Lucy too, I miss Gabrielle way more than I miss Xena. A series about what happened to Gab after Xena kicked the bucket? I'm sooooo there.

Renee is WAY too underutilized as an actress, and I'm excited to see some new projects.

And then, of course, there is the hotness factor. I still have a giant Renee poster I bought at a Xena con 8 years ago...is that bad? :-)

christiekeith's picture

Renee, bad? Inconceivable!

How can anything with Renee on it be "bad"?

Can't Wait....

Really looking forward to it but they really need to star in a movie together.

Thanks for the interview Christie!

Ummmmmm!!! Renee!

Hey, Army Wives Execs, your show would go over much better this season, with a little Renee.  Or maybe, In Plain Sight should jump in and do a few Renee eps., with an interest in Mary.  They may just beat you in the ratings war.  Just a thought. We'll watch you Renee, in anything you do.  There are a zillion Renee O'Connor fans.  Yes I said a zillion!    Love and Light
