Live-blogging the Xena Convention: Saturday, part 3More live-blogging of the Xena Convention in Burbank! To see all Xena Con posts, click here.
We're back at Day 2 of the convention with XWP producers R. J. Stewart and out lesbian Liz Friedman, both wearing WGA pins -- Liz is a strike captain. I was backstage talking to Lucy and Renee -- reports to come, and photos -- during Ted Raimi's appearance, so no Joxer fix. Sorry. I also missed the very beginning of R. J. and Liz, although I understand he took some heat over Xena's death at the end of the series. Jumping right in with a question asked of Liz about lesbian TV today: "I can't stop walking the L Word, but it's awful. It's the worst written show on TV. It's not a good show. And Cashmere Mafia, they suckered us in with the pilot, but by episode three she's flirting with guys again." Fan asked if Liz is disappointed that Xena and Gabrielle never kissed. Liz: I don't think so. R. J.: Steve is. Liz: Deeply. (Laughter) I think we did what was right for the show. Liz says R. J. also used to tell her she didn't have to write the episodes so well. Fan: Props to Liz for being the only out member of the cast/crew. Liz: As opposed to the hundreds of other closeted people? (Laughter and applause.) Forgive me, I mock becuase I love. No, it was no issue for me. It was my first job out of college. Rob has some story about me being there my first week wearing a leather jacket with a big Queer Nation sticker on the back. They knew about me and it was no issue. I was the one who kept saying to the studio no one would ever know that Gabrielle and Xena were gay. R. J.: You were at first not comfortable with the Internet rumors that they were, although you ended up embracing it. Liz: At first I thought we'd have to do all kinds of things to avoid that impression, but instead we raced headlong right into it. R. J.: Bath scenes and everything. Fan: You are all talking as if XWP and the company that created it was a miracle from the sky that couldn't ever happen again. Is XWP a once in a lifetime thing or couldn't you do something else again? R.J.: You mean are we too lazy to do it again? Liz: Long list of reasons. R.J.: Rob and I discuss it and we'd like to do something again. Liz: There was a certain great luck of fate. If Vanessa Angel hadn't gotten sick, Lucy wouldn't have been Xena. If the dead hour after Hercules didn't happen, and they asked us to do a series about Xena... it is a little bit of a miracle. Fan: Do you think Gabrielle was meant to be a warrior? R. J.: In a more perfect world, no, but the way it played out, that's who she was, and she was a fabulous warrior. A fan thanked R. J. for inventing Callisto -- much love for her bad self from everyone on stage and in the audience. A fan asked about favorite campfire scenes. Liz named the ending of "Many Happy Returns." They were called off the staqe. Liz said, "We must serve our masters," and they left to a standing ovation. Update at 7 PM Pacific Time: Heading out to Lucy's concert. I heard she and Renee have something different planned tonight. I'll report back tonight or in the morning. Submitted by on January 26, 2008 - 7:26pm. |

christiekeith's brain of steel
A Callisto of a headache
I DO have a Callisto of a headache, believe me!
It's a bit stressful to keep it all moving but there's some great energy here. One thing everyone has been saying -- Lucy and Renee said it today -- is that the Xena fandom is growing, not shrinking. It's a strange and wonderful place, the Xenaverse, LOL!

Oh I am loving these
Oh I am loving these reports. Thank you, thank you, thank you Christie. :)
I sit in awe at the things Lucy and Renée say and do. One would think that after Xena was over, we'd never get to see them again sharing the love they had for eachother on screen, but nope... They share it with us every time they get together. I love it that they're so open.
Practically everyone involved with the show are fantastic people. So i'll be reading the reports on all the guests :)
Thanks again!
this is
THANKS----loving all the reports!
Thanks Christie, for blogging all of this---I feel like I am there...you know, except for the fact that I am not there.
Tell the writers to hop on that Xena The Broadway Musical idea I pitched in your other blog report----how great would that be? Those ladies love to work a live audience, what better way to bring Xena back???

Christie, you're doing an
Christie, you're doing an amazing job. Thanks so much for bringing us a thorough and enjoyable recapping of the CON. It brings back many fine memories for me.
Mari, interesting idea...Xena on Broadway!!
Broadway Musical pitch....the full version!
Hey thanks Exploregal--- I really think a Broadway musical could work!!
In case you missed it---here was the full pitch for a musical---if you like the idea, ladies, spread the word!:
Since Lucy and Renee love to perform live for their audience----have any of the writers thought of doing a broadway musical??? The musicals they did on the show were so much fun and those ladies both can perform live---seems like a no-brainer to me--and the entire gay community would support it! The lesbians, no doubt, but also the guys---that musical number with Joxer all the half naked male dancers would make them fill the seats to be sure! Oh---and musical numbers with the AMAZONS---how cool would that be for the ladies?
As a writer myself, I would be all over this idea if I owned the rights to the Xena story! When Fates Collide was the best episode---and would be a great ending to the musical. Come on Katherine, how bout you get right on this! (AFTER Army Wives w/ Renee, of course!) you need help, just give a shout! (Ha!)
Cheers!

Musical ? Yep !
Personally I don't think that there will ever be a Xena movie, well at least not before I go into pension. I really like the idea of a musical though, loved the musical eps on the show.
Just wondering, who is going to do the fight scenes ? I mean besides Renee of course. And what happens if weapons get out of control and fly around ? Will the audience be handed Roman armor, just in case ? :)
Explorergal Xena is flawless (exept that she keeps dying in inappropriate moments), not Lucy. I completely agree though with the eyes and the chemistry thingie. But it's not only the eyes. Renee can do these looks that make me instantly wanna merry her (and I am without any doubt not the only one).
Christie you're doing a real good job there. You must have mastered the art of multitasking (I haven't. I'm such a single-threader). Respect !
Why not take the Xena to Broadway?...
Thanks Tia---I really think, short of a movie, this is the next best thing---- and maybe better... Imagine what that could look like on stage---Amazons dancing, the hot tub scene from Day In A Life (there was an episode called "The Play's The Thing" that showed an interpretation of this as Gabrielle put the Xena stories onto the stage....That is when I first started thinking this would be a kick-ass idea for a Broadway stage show.)
I think with Xena's fan base (and I know a lot of gay guys who LOVE the show)---it could turn into a Rocky Horror Picture Show type event with the fans really getting into it like they do at the conventions! You know, costumes, props....good times!
Come on, creators of Xena---once the writer's strike is over, think about what you folks could do with this medium...
I would have to see that show everytime I come to NYC!

Yeah ! For the hardcore nerds !
Just like those neverending reruns of The Blues Brothers in certain movies. All dressed up, with a lot of stuff flying around all the time. Didn't have any use for the condoms though. And you really don't see much wearing RayBans in a theatre.
Ahh, the tub scenes. Classic !
"The Play's the Thing" ? I guess the german title of this ep was "Vorhang auf für Gabrielle !". Did you see that while Gabby and her ensemble were rehearsing(?) the scene including the fake hot tub, when the curtain opens, for a very brief moment you can see Gabby presumably kissing the girl who plays Xena in Gabby's play about her life with Xena (puh ! that was complex) ? It's just a glimpse. You will probably have to use single frame skipping to see it. And when Gabby realizes the curtain is opening, she stopps and looks ashamed and caught for a moment. Cute ! Well that's what I call subtext hidden in subtext.
The problem with a Xena musical on Broadway would be that I most probably would never get to see it. Hmmm...saving money, revisiting holiday planning...hmmm, could be worth it. It's crazy, but why not drop a few emails to the offical Xena, LL and ROC fansites ? But I'm sure there would be legal issues in the way, and I'm not sure if LL and ROC would be willing to commit themselves to such an long running and therefore time consuming project. But, who knows ?
No musical, unless it's they only way out
Personnaly, I don't think a musical would be a good thing. All the credits to Lucy and Renee, without these amazing two women there wouldn't be Xena, but I don't think a musical would be the same thing as the tv-show. There was so much behind the scene work, effects, camara-work etc. that a musical wouldn't have the same impact as the tv-show, except that we can the actresses and actors live on stage and knowing them it would a musical to never forgot.
I think a mini-series or short movie would be the best (unless a musical is the only thing they can do).
Or they could make a movie with Lucy, Renee and with a couple of other xwp actors and new actors. In modern time like the uber fanfiction. They use a other title, don't use any reference to the XWP series, but all the fans would no it. It's just a fantasy, I know.
Love L&R
I love how they are together, I love how Renee told that she walked in on Lucy singing to Iris. I just love them.
