Amazon.com de-gays search results, sales rankings

What do Radclyffe Hall's classic lesbian novel The Well of Loneliness and Ellen: The Biography have to do with gay porn?

You'd think the answer would be pretty much "nothing." But if that's true, why would Amazon.com strip the sales ranks of those books as well as almost all gay and lesbian books on their site — including Rita Mae Brown's Rubyfruit Jungle, Sarah Water's Tipping the Velvet, Jeanette Winterson's Oranges are not the Only Fruit and James Baldwin's gay classic Giovanni's Room — at the same time it's removing the sales rankings for adult novels?

This is obviously a big problem for authors, but where it really impacts readers is that those sales rankings dictate search returns on the site — in other words, books that have low or no sales rankings turn up much lower in search results, if they turn up at all.

You can only find the de-ranked books if you both search by title and choose the search category "Books." If you do a generic title search from the Amazon front page without specifying that it's a book search, you will not find the de-ranked books among the top results (or anywhere on the first page of results, in some cases). Which means that not only will those who browse Amazon.com's "top sellers" lists in various genres never come across any of these books, they may not even find these books when they're deliberately looking for them.

This appears to have started as early as February, but it's become a high-profile issue this weekend as more and more people have blogged and twittered about it (it's the number-one trending topic on Twitter today, via the hashtag #amazonfail).

And it's not just fiction. The blog Meta Writer noted that affected titles also include The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students and The Dictionary of Homophobia: A Global History of Gay & Lesbian Experience.

And indeed, not one of those books has its sales ranking listed.

Neither do Kate Bornstein's Gender Outlaw, Katherine V. Forrest's detective novels or Leslie Feinberg's Stone Butch Blues.

Asked "What's up with that?" by a number of authors, Amazon sent out a form response:

In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude "adult" material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.

It's hard to know what's more disturbing: That they're removing gay and lesbian books from their search results and sales rankings in the first place, or that they're categorizing anything about our community and our lives in the stigmatized "adult" category even when there's nothing "adult" about it.

I mean, in what universe are books like The Lesbian Parenting Book: A Guide to Creating Families and Raising Children and that G-rated chestnut Patience and Sarah "adult" books?

Meanwhile, Hitler's Mein Kampf, Speechless: Silencing the Christians: How Liberals and Homosexual Activists are Outlawing Christianity (and Judaism) to Force Their Sexual Agenda on America and Playboy: The Complete Centerfolds are all considered acceptable for all ages and retain their sales rank and search results prominence.

I checked the gay young adult titles by AfterElton.com's Brent Hartinger, and they still have their sales rankings. But a few other YA titles I looked at didn't, including Sandra Scoppettone's lesbian-themed Happy Endings are All Alike and, ironically, The Heart Has Its Reasons: Young Adult Literature with Gay/Lesbian/Queer Content, 1969-2004.

Neither did Taking a Chance on God: Liberating Theology for Gays, Lesbians, and Their Lovers, Families, and Friends or Heather Has Two Mommies, which has got to be one of the most banned books in American history.

Nice company you're in, Amazon.

Amazon.com has not responded to a request for a comment by AfterEllen.com.

UPDATE #1: Here's the response Christie Keith received from Amazon: "Thanks for your message. There was a glitch with our sales rank feature that is currently being fixed."

UDATE #2: The Seattle PI and others have now received the following statement from Amazon spokesperson Drew Herdener:

This is an embarrassing and ham-fisted cataloging error for a company that prides itself on offering complete selection.
It has been misreported that the issue was limited to Gay & Lesbian themed titles – in fact, it impacted 57,310 books in a number of broad categories such as Health, Mind & Body, Reproductive & Sexual Medicine, and Erotica. This problem impacted books not just in the United States but globally. It affected not just sales rank but also had the effect of removing the books from Amazon's main product search.
Many books have now been fixed and we're in the process of fixing the remainder as quickly as possible, and we intend to implement new measures to make this kind of accident less likely to occur in the future.

insane...

As a result of all of this, the top result when 'homosexuality' is input into the search box is 'A Parents Guide to Preventing Homosexuality' followed by more anti-gay non fiction.

I went totally batshit crazy when I saw that.  I dabbled in 'ex-gay' stuff, and that was damaging enough....anyone who actually goes down that route will get effed up, and it's horrible that Amazon ends up pointing people that way.

Sadly, we still have a lot of work to do. I think it's important to take action when something like this happens.

Check out Francine Saint

Check out Francine Saint Marie's post in this forum (second page near the bottom)

http://www.amazon.com/tag/gay%20and%20lesbian/forum/ref=cm_cd_dp_rt_tft_...

She explains that this is something that has been happening to her for some time and seems to be linked to tagging her work as 'gay' 'lesbian' etc...

I too don't buy the 'glitch' explanation. It does seem that this has been somewhat gradual. I suspect the 'glitch' is the removal of non fiction and YA books, but that so-called 'erotica' is intended to be de-ranked. Are all GLBT romances considered 'erotica' though?

changetheirhue's picture

huh.

I bought The Well of Lonliness on Amazon about a month ago.

This isn't cool.

monica_ca's picture

Honestly, I have no problem

Honestly, I have no problem if Amazon wants to not rank 'adult' stuff....but how in the world could they be so asinine and ignorant to think that anything lgbt related is 'adult'...that I can't quite figure out.  I mean, what in the world is 'adult' about Annie on my Mind???

Alexa's picture

It gets worse

If you do a search for "homosexuality" on Amazon, the first results are:

A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality
You Don't Have to Be Gay:
For The Bible Tells Me So
Can Homosexuality Be Healed?

That's just absolutely ridiculous.

I sent them an e-mail when I heard about this and told them that, although I'd spent over $5K at Amazon in the past five years, and it might cost me more to buy stuff elsewhere, I wasn't spending one more cent at Amazon until they corrected this crap, and explained why it was set up like this to begin with.  I also cancelled my affiliate account.

monica_ca's picture

'For the Bible Tells Me So'

This is actually a 'pro-gay' documentary.  The others freak me out though.  Le sigh.
Alexa's picture

My bad

Well, that's what I get for making assumptions about something with "Bible" in the title of it with respect to homosexuality!  Haha!

I've also spent thousands of dollars at Amazon over the last couple of years. I wrote customer service, and told them if a formal apology isn't issued with a reversal of the search issue, Amazon will lose me as a customer.

get it rigth

I don’t usually comment, but recently I’ve found that EA writers and users have been chopping out facts so we don’t get the whole picture. When you search "homosexuality" on Amazon, yes indeed the first one  "parents guide to preventing homosexuality"  but to follow are some gay friendly material as well ( link to the actual search: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field... )

The only thing that really bothers me about this mess is the reason they’ve used. Calling any material that is gay related “adult” is a tad off I think. Although considering how often people’s reaction to my sexuality have been asking how I have sex haha. Then its not strange that they would label homosexuality as adult, but that’s their perved minds at work, not ours ;P

Their handling of the matter isn’t exactly smooth either. Calling it a glitch, in this day and age? Oh dear haha. You might have gotten away with it saying that your computer crashed and deleted your assignment 5 years ago, but not today, and especially not on the internet.

If they wanted to make their front page more "family friendly" or what ever reason they might have had for this move, then they should at least be honest about the matter. The fact that other erotic material is still on their list suggest that their priorities are a bit twisted I think. (Personally I think sex is beautiful and should never be shushed away, I find mature ratings silly)  I have a feeling that the people at Amazon messed up, its just sad that they don’t have the balls to say so in a proper way and apologise for the offence.

I hope I made sense, English isn’t my first language and I don’t catch all the grammar pits :P

Support Feminist and LGBT Bookstores

Thank Godess we have one of the last remaining feminist bookstores in the country here in Toledo. It's a bookstore I can walk into and feel perfectly comfortable. And I don't have to walk to some dark corner to find a book with lesbian content or characters.

There are very few left in the US these days. Same goes for LGBT booksellers. Amazon.com and the big box booksellers could care less about our community and do not deserve our hard earned money.

I won't stand for this.

Unless we get a reversal and apology in the next couple of days, I'm boycotting Amazon and telling everyone I know to do so (and I'm certainly doing so now as well).  It's going to be hard, considering I live near no independent or queer bookstores, but I can't think of what else to do.

There are lots of bookstores online!

Try http://www.powells.com/ ! On Twitter (@Powells) mentioned having an LGBT books sale soon in response to the avalanche of customers on encouraging one as a response.

Also, there are Borders, B&N, AbeBooks; in Canada Little Sister's (famous LGBTQ bookstore), Chapters (megabookstore like B&N).  Most independent bookstores have websites these days where you can purchase online too.

Lots of non-Amazon options.  Fear not book lovers!

So stupid

That's so stupid, I'm actually really pissed right now because I buy absolutely everything off amazon and am always telling my friends that it's better than ebay. I've sent them an email letting them know that I won't be shopping with them until they remove their seemingly anti-gay stance. I've also let them know that I'm encouraging my friends and family not to shop with them either. Ridiculous.
Canadianna's picture

Sarah Warn

Like many non-adult LGBTQ books, Sarah Warn's book "Reading the L Word" has been targeted too.  The sales rank is gone.  That means people will have to find the book by searching "Books" for the specific title or author.  They won't be able to see it by browsing and will thus be less likely to find it.  Sarah Warn's book has no erotic content, it's just a collection of essays and interviews about a lesbian TV show and lesbian/bisexual visibility.  Which is enough that Amazon won't display it like any other book about TV or anything else. Amazon has also un-ranked books on feminism, because apparently feminism is "adult content" too.

Bad, bad Amazon.com.

Tell them what you think, go to http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_navbox_hp_cen...

& click "Contact Us".

Make sure to Twitter (#amazonfail) and tell your friends.  Amazon is discriminating against us, against feminists, against transgender people.

Unbelievable...

I'm an Australian and I don't think that Amazon.com is that big of a deal in Australia. However, I think it's shocking that they are clearly pushing an anti-gay agenda by the search results it chooses to present first when searching "homosexuality"

I do know however that Shamim Sarif's production company's (responsible for "I Can't Think Straight" and "The World Unseen") website has amazon links for her books. I hope that they realise what kind of agenda they are now supporting...

I have yet to be convinced

I have yet to be convinced that this is a deliberate company-wide policy attempt at limiting access and not just an unintentional coding mistake or a malicious but small group's attempt at subversion.

That being said, if it is revealed that this is a company-wide policy being put into effect, I'll be taking my business elsewhere.   I don't need some company deciding what I can read.  Nor do I need them deciding that who and what I am is not okay for others to be exposed to.

monica_ca's picture

I'm willing to give them the

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, for now.  I sent them an email and asked them about it.  It's possible that this is an oversight of some sort/unintentional, but with everyone and their grandmother Twittering about it this weekend, if this is somehow a mistake, I would think that it'll be taken care of by the end of the week.  If Amazon doesn't release a statement about it soon, I'll take that to mean that it was intentional.
ttstod's picture

That's my current stance

That's my current stance right now too.  But then, it's Easter and I'm feeling generous (too many jelly beans, I think).  Without some sort of official (and not form) response from Amazon yet, I'm willing to chalk it up to a misunderstanding blown way out of proportion.  But I've given it a time limit as well; though I would hate to start doing my shopping elsewhere, I will have to if this isn't resolved.  Not that they'd suffer much from the loss of my meager purchases, but it's the principle of the thing.  I'm just hoping that everything gets cleared up this week.
Christie Keith's picture

#amazonfail

I'll be honest, I don't think this was a policy from the top as in, "Strip sales rank from all gay themed books as if they were porn."

But I do think that someone, somewhere, thought, as many websites, "web nanny" software programs and workplaces have thought over the years when setting up "profanity" and "porn" filters, that "gay" and "lesbian" are terms that in and of themselves imply or even describe sex.

It is a pervasive cultural bias, no less powerful because it's almost entirely unconscious and unexamined by many people who hold it.

Someone programmed this in, and my guess is that's how it happened: gay=sex.

ttstod's picture

Exactly.  You've put it

Exactly.  You've put it more eloquently than my quick attempt. That is, in my currently glass half full state of mind, what I think has happened.

I think you've highlighted an amazingly important point.  The whole gay=sex perception, I mean.   There seems to be a group of people who can't understand that the terms gay or lesbian refer to much more than sexual acts.  Would I have a problem if it were just erotica (all erotica) being pulled?  Nope.  (Apparently straight =/= sex.  That makes me sad for straight people, I think.  Poor undersexed straight people.)

Megan Rose Gedris's picture

I don't see how it's a

I don't see how it's a coding mistake when every LGBT book is systematically being de-ranked. If it had all happened at the same time, suddenly every LGBT book being de-ranked, that could be a coding mistake. (Coding mistake being LGBT=deranked.) But since it's happening so gradually, it makes me believe that it is a person, or a group of people, going through each book individually and removing the rankings. This has been going on for months, and has only just gained so much attention.

was this always the case?

I just wonder if this is a change because of the recent fail or if it has more to do with searching the word "homosexuality" (which I often see more in conjunction with right-wing ideas) as opposed to "gay" or "queer."

Woah, i just noticed some of these "let's get you out of that evil gay lifestyle" books are under the "gay and lesbian" section.

The other really freaky thing about this is there are several "straight" books of flat-out erotica that were allowed to keep their rankings-- the actual sex toys still have rankings too. I guess the dirtiest thing of all is the idea that gay people might be human beings.

i just bought Imagine Me & You on amazon yesterday!! My goddess, sometimes this is a cruel, crude world. Could the fact that I tend to buy queer-related books from them be sending enough of a message that I can keep buying stuff for art school for crazy cheap?? I hope so. It's upsetting. This does have me pondering the fact that I randomly found Clitourist by Karen Salmonsohn for 4 dollars. (Best. Product Description. Ever. "Penis Envy? P'Shaw.") This is McCarthy bullshit, right out of Neil Miller's Out of the Past. Oh snap! I just made that reference BECAUSE I READ. Don't they know how many bookworms are lesbians??? This bothers me on a couple of levels

First of all, this is obviously bullcrap.  And prior to this, I loved Amazon and they've gotten a fair amount of my money.

But, as an erotica writer, this also bothers me that they are trying to eliminate the adult books as well.

It's like Amazon has succumbed to some creepy conservative agenda and it's frightening

Amazon Issue -- LGBT TITLES are STILL LISTED!!!!!!

I also spent thousands of dollars on lesbian books, DVDs and other stuff on Amazon through the years and when I heard the LGBT search was taken away (from this aferellen.com article) I freaked.

I immediately closed out of afterellen and went to my Amazon account.  I quickly checked my 'recommendation' list and noticed I was still getting lesbian book and DVD recommendation. I then looked under the Amazon Book section, and noticed they still have a Gay and Lesbian section. I then looked under Movies, and noticed they still had a Gay and Lesbian DVD section.

My heart finally slowed down when I realized this afterellen.com article was highly ERRONEOUS misinformation by a writer from afterellen.com.  As for the 'search' feature, I've never used it. I actually only go directly to the category I'm interested in (whether it is books or movies) and Amazon.com gives me a complete list of what I’m looking for and includes thousands of LGBT titles for me to look at to my hearts content. This dissing of Amazon.com is much ado about NOTHING.

I also want to say that this is the second time in two weeks that a writer from Afterellen.com has dissed someone or something and it’s been ERRONEOUS!!  (The first was misquoting Ms. Longoria on Desperate Housewives and telling us all that she was a homophobe because she didn't like to kiss women (when in actual fact she stated she HATED kissing ANYONE!)

Afterellen.com writers need to be LESS tabloidy and more factual when they write stories.  These last two weeks have been really upsetting and I’m beginning to question to quality and factual information presented by this website, after being a regular visitor from its inception.

You might want to look the post over more carefully. It was updated that AE got a reply, apparently it was a glitch and they are fixing it.

I tend to question the facts of any media outlet, not just AE, but you're reacting quite strongly. AE doesnt update every microsecond and you shouldnt expect it to. This is not a gigantic news website like BBC. Multiple people knew about this situation, just because you personally found no evidence when you sought it does not discredit a multitude of people in agreement, your investigations are just as, if not more so, outdated than AE's. You should always question your own personal bias as much as you should question the bias of the media.
