Tattoos are hot — here's proof

Recently, I have been contemplating getting another tattoo. After all, it has been scientifically proven that they are hot. Before I get inked, however, there are two things I have to decide on first: the design and the placement.

Now you see why I am holding out. There is nothing worse than a bad tattoo.

Let's be real, though: The design options are endless; the placement options are not. And what better way to decide where to permanently mark my body than by looking to celebrities for guidance? It seems to be the trend.

First, there's the old-school armband that Pamela Anderson made popular.

Her thoughts on body art?

"Tattoos are like stories — they're symbolic of the important moments in your life. Sitting down, talking about where you got each tattoo and what it symbolizes, is really beautiful."

But what exactly does barbed wire symbolize? Oh, right: There was that 1996 movie written by someone named Ilene Chaiken. But I digress.

Moving on, I present to you arms and wrists.

Clockwise from top left: Winona Ryder, Jessica Alba, Alanis Morissette and Tegan and Sara.

(See more of Tegan and Sara's tattoos here.)

Of course, I could follow the examples of Megan Fox, Alyssa Milano and Christina Ricci and choose the back of my shoulder.

The upper body doesn't have a lock on body art, though. Ankles get love too!

Penelope Cruz (top) and Charlize Theron (bottom):

One of the most popular locales for famous women to be tattooed these days is the hip.

Clockwise from top left: R&B star Christina Milian, Drew Barrymore, Australian actress/singer Tammin Sursok and Janet Jackson.

Barrymore offers this little quip in regard to her own ink:

"Sometimes I bust out and do things so permanent. Like tattoos and marriage."

Hmmm.

Lastly, one of the seemingly most painful body parts (that are still PG enough for AfterEllen.com) is the neck.

Christina Aguilera and Victoria Beckham:

I'm sorry, but all these visual representations haven't assisted me in my decision-making at all. They have only distracted me from the task at hand. I guess I could go the way of some other famous ladies and just tattoo myself all over. As Amy Winehouse puts it:

"You can never have enough tats."

Apparently some other AfterEllen.com favorites agree with Winehouse. Like P!nk:

Now, I don't want you to think I am selfish in trying to enlist your help for a personal endeavor. To prove it to you, here's a little morsel of a picture I found of P!nk while researching. Enjoy, it's OK!

Back to the tattoos.

Angelina Jolie

For another look at Jolie's tats, check out the 0:23 second mark in this commercial for her next movie, Wanted. (FYI: Bridget McManus also worked on this movie!)

Now, what was I talking about again?

inner wrist-

Hey there... I have a tattoo on my inner wrist and truthfully... it was nothing, didn't really hurt at all. My inner ankle and back of the neck hurt worse. :) GO FOR IT! They are addicting though!!! :)

¸.·´¯)It's true, we're all a little insane(¯`·.¸

Twstdtrinity's picture

Oh so addicting

It's hard to just stop at one. At 20 I have about...*counts them all* 9 scattered up and down my body. Each one has a story that I'm happy to tell.

I adore tattoos but like any addiction it's expensive.

Inked women :)

Thank you for posting this! I think plenty of AE readers know of the appeal of a tattoo - there's plenty of examples on the tattoo thread. (I'm currently planning on getting my sixth one *G* )

A couple more people with tats:

Sarah Jane Potts

Melissa Etheridge

Melissa Ferrick

Others with Tattoos

Yes, fortunately for all of us, there are many, many female celebrities out there with tattoos these days that I could have also included. Jill Bennett, Sarah Michelle Gellar, a Diablo Cody to name a few more.

Thanks for reminding me to acknowledge that!

Tattoos

I have one, because I'm a wimp.

It's the outline of a maple leaf on my left shoulder blade. I'm going to get about 4 more, but they are expensive. The one I have now cost $60 and it took the guy 30 seconds to do it.

The women pictured here are rather proof that tattoos can be really ugly.

plottin' total body inkage

you forgot the lower back just above the butt tattoo often referred to as a tramp stamp.

while that part of the body can be quite sexy, a poorly designed or ill-fitting tat there can ruin its beauty. the upside? it won't stretch as bad if you get pregnant or fade as quickly either.

My Favorite Subject of all :Tattoos!

Tattoos on womyn r so freakin hot! I got two hearts  below my belly button on the left side. I am seriously thinking about getting another one too especially since Inkplosion is coming Next Month in Little Rock. I gotta buy tickets for that.

I'm getting one of a brown-skin faery that looks like me! It wil be on my right shoulder blade. Tats on the backside of womyn are so pretty on womyn!

Love tattoos ...

but my favorite place for on has to be on the back of the neck.  So hot.

I have two now and have plans for four more ... so far!  Finally found the right artist.

delicious

love ink! It's all about conviction. The stories behind women's tats are fascinating. I'm starting a portrait series on women with ink in the UK (will include some self-portraits), so if any of my fellow home nations roses are interested in being photographed, get in touch!

As for myself, I have several tats planned... making sure I'm totally happy with each design before I get them done - don't want anything I'm going to hate in a few years time! Going to a reputable artist is the most important thing, they can advise on size, placement, colours (skin tones, ladies)... not to mention come up with fierce designs you may not even have thought of.

i like tatoos

and i'd really like to get one. The thing is that i havent made up my mind with the place in which i wanna have it done, and oh, the design. Besides, this is probably a silly question, but is it true that it hurts quite a lot? that is one of the things that scares me the most..cause needles and I dont get on very well.
sami_kaye's picture

It depends

It all depends on where you are getting it. I got mine on my back/shoulder and it didn't hurt. It was uncomfortable. The best way I can describe it is a pin going into your skin about a millimetre deep and then pulling. It feels like your skin is being pulled.

I give blood every 3 months, and that hurt more then my tattoo.

water-fly's picture

hey

wow, that definitely sounds not very encouraging hehe, but anyway, i think i'll give tatoos a try in the future, i was thinking on my wrist, but im not sure yet. But thanks for your advice!
verticalblue's picture

It's not that bad...

I got a tattoo on my hip and it took the artist a little over an hour to do and really more than anything it was just annoying not really painful. And after its done for a couple of days it kind of feels like a scrape, you know like when you scrape your knee...but I think since most people who get one tattoo end up getting more tattoos it's a safe bet to say it doesn't hurt all that badly...
sami_kaye's picture

Yeah

The most painful part for me was that night when I put mosturizer on it. It stung, and then it felt like a bad sun burn for a couple days.
water-fly's picture

cool

so it is more like a scrape, good :) yeah i agree with you guys, you probably just have to go for the first one, and then you'll be eager to get more and more tattoos hehe. But well, as for my part, i think i'll start with just one, and then we'll see!
hmeyer08's picture

Tattoos ...

The way I describe that the way it feels is that it's like pins and needles with a slight burn.
Clonchi's picture

mine...

I now have 4 tattoos, and working on a 5th! But I try to choose the location more in terms with how they'll look later in life. I have two on my ankles, one on my right wrist and one on the back. I try to find places where I can hide them if I want to, and show them if I feel like it, and also places that don't wrinkle or expand that much, so that they don't get distorted in some 10 or 20 years!

Tattoos

I have to say, as a tattooed gal, the one word that makes me cringe is "Flash."  It's just my opinion, but I think having your own design as opposed to something you picked out of a book or off the shop's wall will mean more because it's unique.  SO many of my friends have gone into the tattoo shop on a whim, gone all ga ga over a little butterfly or rose or something they saw in the book, haven't given it any thought, and then are stuck with it.  When they're left to explain why they got it they say "I saw it in the book and it looked cute."

Being an artist, maybe I appreciate tattoos too much, therefore I feel this way, but I think of them as pieces of expression and something to collect.

I also don't understand the fascination with the white tattoos.  One of my former friends wanted to get a white tattoo so that no one would see it.  Honestly, and again it's just my opinion, if you're going to get one stop being a pussy about it and GET ONE.  I know that many people have jobs and things where tattoos are frowned upon, but at least get it so that you can see it and just get it in a spot that's easily covered up.

You definitely have to "shop around" for the right artist.  Some of the work in the portfolios I've seen make me wonder how they're in business because they clearly shouldn't be.  It's 110% worth it if you have to pay more for a reputable artist because they know color, placement and technique so that your new tat of a smiley face doesn't look like a blurry blob in a year because the colors have bled.

hmeyer08's picture

Some thoughts ...

I have to absolutely agree with you on two points:

1)  If you have to worry about work, get it in a place that's easily covered up.

  - I'm in that situation and have had to think about that with each one I have and the ones I am planning on.  It's definitely something that can be done -- when all is said and done, I will have 6 and all will be covered up so I could be considered "professional" at work.

2)  Finding the right artist.

  - I didn't really understand this concept until I saw a friend who got a bad tattoo.  It's definitely worth it.  I've waited years between tattoos to find the right artist and I'm glad I did.  It's a lifetime investment and, in my opinion, should be treated as such.

  - Plus it helps if you find an artist that you like and trust.  That way, you can get some original art that the artist may have more of a vested interest in.  It seems like they do their best work on pieces they enjoy or can design themselves.  Giving the artist freedom will often result in a great piece.

Nice Tats!

I think tats are hot, will probably get one myself sometime.

On a side note, is it just me or does Angelina look really skinny, her arms looked all boney and kinda odd! I hope she puts on some weight!

So hot!

Tattoos are so incredibly hot! There are definitly some bad ones out there, though. I have an outline of a heart just above my wrist and a big colorful Sgt. Pepper's drum head in the middle of my upper back, just below my neck. All I can say is I want more more more.

I think a spot worth mentioning is on the back of the arm above the elbow. Like where Kate Moennig's sparrow is.

Another tattoo?

Yeah I've been thinking about getting another tattoo lately.  I had my first one done as a wrap around quote on my ankle.  It came out great and the tattoo parlor I went to was like the 4th/5th one I'd tried.  They certainly made my first time getting a tattoo really easy.

It took me almost a year to figure out what I wanted for my first tattoo and it is very personal to me.  I'd like the second one to be just as meaningful.  I think I'll put it on my shoulder blade.

Funny, the tattoo artist I went to told me tattoos were addictive.  I didn't believe her at the time, I told her I only wanted one and that would be enough for me.  Ok, so maybe I'll stop at 2?

Tattoos are hot!

Tattoos are hot and so are piercings. I have 1 tattoo and two piercings (four if you count my ears). I have been wanting another tattoo but I'm not sure what to get. Until I find the one that speaks to me I'll keep waiting. It depends on the TAT and where it’s at but they can be so sexy. My favorite places would be the back of the neck, the arm, the shoulder and the underside of your wrist.

Good artist?

I've never gotten a tattoo yet but I really want to, I'm thinking of starting out small. Anyway, a lot of you have said to make sure that you have a good tattoo artist, well, do any of you have any tips or I dunno a checklist to have before getting the tattoo. Since I don't imagine I have the money to support this as a major habit I'd hate to discover that I picked a bad one and the few tattoos I'll have will look bad in a couple of years. So, if you have any suggestions of things to ask or look out for before getting the tattoo that'd be great :)

Tattoos

My advice would be that if you have a friend who is a decent artist, discuss your ideas with them and see if they can create with a design you like based on your idea.  Then research/visit local tattoo studios and see if they have a tattoo artist who is confident they can replicate it.

I have to say that I am a bit wishy-washy with tattoos.  I mean, some look really, really bad.  But then there are others which are way hot -- Even to me, someone who is not a huge fan of them.

The one thing I would

The one thing I would recommend is to look at the portfolios of the tattoo artists in your area.  I remember going to each one or looking them up online (most artists nowadays have MySpace pages).  Once you look at finished tattoos, you'll get a feel if the artist is good or not.  Additionally, looking at their portfolios, you'll get an idea of what their specialties are.  I wouldn't go to a Japanese art specialist for a Celtic tattoo or vice versa.  Not to say that the artist wouldn't be talented and able to do it, but just like doctors, often you get referred to a specialist.  Kind of the same thing.  If you don't see anyone in your immediate area that you are a fan of or are impressed by, don't give up.  Keep looking and expand the area.  I found an artist that is in another state than me.  Yes, it's going to take longer for me to get them done just because of geography and logistics, but I know it will be worth it in the end.  Once you find an artist you like, you have to talk to them and make sure you're on the same page.  Research and open communication with the artist will help get you the tattoo you want and deserve.

Friends don't let friends get bad ink.

hygiene people!

I know this is probably pretty obvious, but make sure when you enter the studio it's clean, tidy and generally a nice place to be. If it's not, then you probably don't want to get a tattoo there, unless you want to pick up some nasty disease as a little extra. Tattoo Johnny has some good advice for first timers. http://www.tattoojohnny.com/first-tattoo.asp

Generally, I'd always go with word of mouth, so ask around about the best tattoo artists in your area. Above all, you need to feel comfortable with the artist and trust them so take your time and shop around.

neck tattoos.

i'm 22 and i have 13ish tattoos.
okay, if you count a few of them as more than one because of how big they are and/or because they incorporate several smaller objects into one major design; i have somewhere between 13 and 22 tattoos.

and i'm going to have to say...
back of the neck, REALLY didn't hurt at all.
i barely noticed it

the left part of my left calf and the black ink on the inside part of my underarm probably hurt the most. OH! and the one tiny part that is directly on top of my vein on my left wrist.

but still, it is a pain that is completely worth it.

Shamrock...

i just got my 2nd tattoo in LA at Shamrock Social Club (i'm pretty sure that's the name, either that or just Shamrock Tattoo). They were super nice, it was real clean and they even let me use their computer to print out my design. My friend and i were in there for close to two hours before we got our tattoos because we hadn't planned on getting them that night (that night was supposed to be me getting my lip pierced, the next night was gonna be tats, lol). The people at Shamrock didn't mind at all and were very helpful. hope this helps :)
