Sara Bareilles' commercial appealThe recent trend in music has been to gain popularity and exposure through being sampled in commercials. Sara Bareilles is the perfect example of said trend.
You would have to have been in a coma these past few months not to have heard the first single, "Love Song," from her debut album Little Voice. After being featured in a Rhapsody commercial in late 2007, the song shot from No. 73 to No. 16 on the Billboard pop charts in one week. She has since been included in several additional commercials for Rhapsody, as well. But don't make the mistake of thinking her career and time is limited to hawking products. She is currently headlining her own tour and recently announced that she will spend the summer touring with Maroon 5 and the Counting Crows.
Last night, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers held the 25th Annual Pop Music Awards in Los Angeles, where Bareilles was presented with the ASCAP Vanguard Award. According to a press release, the honor "is given in recognition of the impact of musical genres that help shape the future of American music." Also, as Colin reported on NewNextNow.com, she released the music video to her second single, "Bottle it Up," this week. That voice is absolutely ridiculous. There is definitely nothing "little" about it. She brings a bit of a jazz influence into a very mainstream pop sound, which is no easy task. It reminds me a bit of Fiona Apple. The video itself isn't anything groundbreaking in terms of its direction, but it's effective. By following her around with only varying forms of keyboards and pianos, you're encouraged to listen to the actual music and lyrics: "Only one good thing worth trying to be and it's love, love, love, love." As if all that is not reason enough to love and support her, go watch the Lawrence King PSA one more time. She appears about halfway through. Want to hear more from Sara? (You should!) Go to her MySpace page, where you will find tons of videos, blogs and news. Submitted by on April 10, 2008 - 2:31pm. |

oh Sara Bareilles !
This is great!
my current addiction... wuhoooo!
love that song callled " love song"... yeaaya
She's awesome
And not that my crushing cares, but is she queer?
Yes, I'm a non-discriminating crusher!
Awesome
Amazing!
I've been listening to Sara Bareilles since early 2007 and I'm so happy she's finally getting more attention!
And I have to say, I was inclined to squint at the video; it lacked something (action, maybe?) Oh, well. Hearing her sufficed.
I think I first checked her
I think I first checked her out on VH1's artist you oughta know. I immediately went out and bought the cd and for the most part, I love it . Granted, there are a few songs (it actually may only be one song) that I'd gladly skip. I can't pick a favorite, but I really really love "Love on the Rocks". I think it has a nice jazzy, reggae feel.
I always enjoy a cd more when the songs aren't in heavy rotation on the radio.
GRAVITY
She. Is. Hot.
Everytime I run across her video, my heart melts a little. Especially when she sings the chorus. *blushes*
And, let me not forget to mention that her music is great. :)
Loves SB
Been a fan of hers since
damn...
...my ex...not so much.Killer voice
Until a short while I didn't know what she looks like, but her voice is *WOW!* I've recently heard her perform live, and indeed there's nothing little about her voice.
_ _ _ _ _
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." (Dr. Seuss)
Loving Annabelle-Gravity.
Loving Annabelle-Gravity.
yeah i remember that.
all time favourite movie.
I'll always B me
Sara Bareilles
I've been a fan of hers since a long time ago too. I think it was "Gravity" in Loving Annabelle, like many others, that I noticed her. She has starting to get some commercial success with Love Song. The Hotel Cafe Tour line up has been doing pretty well. Joshua Radin's getting played too.
My favourite song from Sara Bareilles has to be "Love On The Rocks" though. It has such an infectious sound. She's going to be playing on the 20th of April in Toronto with Rachael Yamagata! and Raining Jane! but sadly, I have an exam the next day. Boo! It would have been fantastic.
April 20th
Woot! Thanks for mentioning the concert in Toronto - I didn't know about it before now, but I'm so going to be there!
I, too, loved her music from the moment that I heard "Gravity" in Loving Annabelle. It's one of my favourite songs - lucky for me, she's produced about 3 different recordings of it! Another song of hers that I really like is "Fairytale." The lyrics are hilarious and her jazz sensibility really shines through.
Oh look
Lol, she looks quite wrist-cuffy in that video;)
I've been such a fan of hers for years, and I'm sooo glad she's getting the attention she deserves.
YESS!!!
wrist-cuffy all the way!
sara bareilles
A breath of fresh air...
"Love on the Rocks" is an amazing song. She's my new fave artist along with Taylor Swift (Who is also in the PSA along with SB). Talented female writers AND musicians...I love it!!!
Bottle it up actually sounds great!
I, for some reason, listen to "Little Voice" and was only impressed by one song (Between the lines).
Will go back and have another go at the album now :-P

Fairytale
I like Fairytale. I'm not sure which version I like better though, the one on Careful Confessions or the one from Little Voice.
I don't know...
I absolutely adore Sara. Ever since I heard Gravity in Loving Annabelle I've been following her (beginning of 2006). Bought both her albums. For some reason she is suddenly getting really famous. Even here in Holland 'Love Song' is high in the charts and still climbing. I feel a bit dubious about it. Of course I wish her all the succes in the world because she's freakin' talented, and has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. But she's not 'mine' anymore. I used to be the only one who knew this little treasure, and now everyone knows her. Bit sad about that for some reason, and I feel stupid for feeling that way:p

lol
I feel the same way cause I've been a fan for a few years now. :) In the end, I'm just happy for her. She is a great songwriter so I believe she'll be more successful in the future.

Sara Bareilles and Girl Play
Yes!
Absolutely. that is where I first heard her songs as well and I fell in love.
The Way The Cookie Crumbles
No Borders AllowedI absolutely adore Sara Bareilles
My new favorite song off her album is One Sweet Love.
*swoons* Her voice makes me melt.
Not so wrist-cuffy
Hey ya'll, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Sara is not queer. Although, she has many friends who are and obviously supports our community per her participation in the Lawrence King psa. But there's always wishful thinking.
On a slightly side note, if you get the chance to see her live, DO IT! She's amazing and one of those remarkably talented musicians who can improvise in the middle of her set to make things interesting.
I don't mind that she's not
yay!
I ADORE her! I've been listening to her CD for a long time and I just love it. "Bottle it up" is a great song as are "Vegas" and "Fairytale" - I'm so glad she's getting the recognition she so deserves! "Love Song" is one of the best songs in a really really really long time.
Edit: UGH! The Counting Crows tour is coming to my city (usually it goes to one of the other cities in Ohio lol) but she won't be there!!!!! :( :( *sigh*

If I'm borrowing your icon, I'd be happy to give you credit, just let me know! :)
Love Her
I've been a SB fan for years. I was so happy when her music finally started getting recognition. She is a wonderful artist.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I'm tearing all my posters down
All of my idols are dead
I Admit It!
I caught onto the Sara Bareilles craze after seeing the Rhapsody commercial. Little Voices is on rotation in my car.
What was totally endearing was seeing the video reaction when she was first played on the radio...I think on Regis...could be wrong...but she's a cutie.
Love the voice...defintely sounds older than her years.
Love her 'Love Song' but not her voice...
There's not one person i know who have something against that song. It's like THE song of the moment.Unfortunately, she has a voice i've heard one time too many.
Her 2004 album should have
Girl Play
I remember hearing her on Girl Play and it wasn't until later that I realized it was her.
I've heard her on Loving Annabelle.
I bought her cd a while back after hearing only a little bit in Barnes & Noble. It was one of the best impulsive buys I've made.
A girl I'm kind of lust/love with and I both love Gravity and I played it for her on our first date...and I eventually got her Sara Bareilles' cd. I've purchased her cd at least 4-5 times. In any case, I hope she comes out with a performance DVD. I absolutely love her voice and I'm so tired of "Love Song" and hearing people declare their love for her after only hearing that song and they can't name ANY other songs but that.
**Courtney**
its like FINALLY!
finally she is getting the fame that she totally deserves!!
i love every single song in her album and it all started with "gravity".
every song in that album hits it right there on the dot.right on.
can she pls be queer. pls pls pls.
little Sara
I knew Sara when she was 14 and starring in a regional theater production of Charlottes Web. She was so amazingly talented at that age, and completely confident and secure.
I remember when she was invited to sing the National Anthem at the SF Giants game...at like 14 years old. That was a big deal too.
I also worked with her older sister who was also in theater. Her sister Stacy was really talented and starred in Evita, Little Shop of Horrors etc.
Sara's mom was active in the theater scene too. Obviously a talented family.
I lost touch as I moved away, but I am not that suprised to see her doing so well.
