Remembering special guests after 200 "Special Victims"

While the fate of several of my favorite "young" television shows hangs in the balance, I revel in the fact that some of my other favorites are still going strong. Case in point: Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will air its 200th episode tonight.

SVU will become just the third current network prime-time drama to reach the century mark twice, joining the original Law & Order and ER in that category.

Though I tend to celebrate birthdays and landmarks with behavior unfit for print, the bigwigs at NBC ring in this Very Special Episode with an A-list guest star: Robin Williams. "Authority" will feature a ripped from the headlines story in which Williams plays an engineer named Merritt Rook who scams a restaurant manager (Scott Adsit, 30 Rock).

When asked about working with the Oscar-winner, SVU star Mariska Hargitay told TV Guide: "I think about some of the guest stars we've had, and it really is a milestone working with such a genius. It makes me so proud that he wanted to do our show. Look how far we've come!"

In addition to current (Hargitay, Diane Neal) and past (Tamara Tunie, Stephanie March, Michelle Hurd and Judith Light) series regulars, the show has a knack for attracting exquisite female guest stars. While fellow AfterEllen.com blogger Ace may disagree with me, I love seeing the fresh faces each week.

Seriously, who can argue with the likes of Lisa Gay Hamilton?

Or Cynthia Nixon?

How about my personal favorite guest ever on SVU, Marcia Gay Harden?

Still no? OK, L Word cast members Marlee Matlin or Pam Grier must do it for you.

Well, goodness. OK, I give in. Whose appearance, in all 199 shows, did you love?

By far the best performance I've seen on this show. MGH is phenomenal to watch.

~It means pride.~

Has to be Leslie Caron, she

Has to be Leslie Caron, she knocked my socks off. I had forgotten how immensely talented she is.

oh and...

while we're naming l word actresses, don't forget katherine moennig. she was on back in 2003.

however, mgh is still the best guest star ever. and i too am in mourning about diane neal leaving.

That was one of my favorites

Amazing if depressing storyline and Kate did it so well! I saw that one long before I had watched the L word and I remember being really impressed with her.

Leslie Caron

as the aged rape victim, a couple of years ago, gave an amazing performance.

Mary Stuart Masterson!

Come on, shes been on there a bunch of times right!? Lol, at least i think she has been, i love that lady. Everytime i see somebody next to Olivia i hope its her, there should be some good FF somewhere with them in it, If not that is a shame!
betsys2003's picture

Yeah she was a regular guest star for a few eps

She was really good. And I agree with you on the Olivia thing! Massive sexual tension. Kind of weird, since it was two presumably straight actresses playing presumably straight parts (even if we all know better about Olivia!).

I've been trying to write a good FF with them for awhile but it's slow going. You have given me motivation to go work on it....

Kate

has to be Kate Moennig for me. That was an amazing episode.

Agreed

her performance completely blew me away.

Other great guests

Shannon Sossamon and Brittany Snow guest starred, as did Hayden Panetierre (twice as different characters). Kate Moennig's guest starring role was also awesome. Although my favorite guest star is Judith Light and her recurring character Elizabeth Donnelly. Her episodes are always funny and intelligent. Love Judy.

Fav show

SVU is without a doubt my favourite show on TV and there have been some fantastic guest stars over the years. And correct me if I'm wrong but i think Tamara Tunie is still a series regular, not a past regular as the blog states. I'm glad they made her a series regular, she's great...now if they would just get rid of Huang who's about as exciting to watch as a paper bag...

I just watched the episode with Marcia Gay Harden last night and she was fantastic! Other favourites are Katherine Moennig who was awesome and Pam Grier who rocked in her characteristic fashion.

I don't mind having the guest stars on every week as no matter who you get they always compliment the cast, and Mariska Hargitay is in absolutely no danger of being pushed into the background, she's gorgeous and talented...now if they would just bring back Stephanie and the HoYay!

Oh I loved when Harden first

Oh I loved when Harden first guest starred on SVU. It was one of their best episodes.

Heather Matarazzo & Alison Folland

My favourite SVU guest stars of all time....

Heather Matarazzo and Alison Folland. Not in the same episode, unfortunately!

I can't believe you forgot Kate Moennig when you mentioned TLW stars who have been on SVU!

so many to choose from

Mary Stuart Masterson is great, although she's almost more a a recurring character than guest star. And I agree, there is just something going on between her an Olivia. Or, I just wish there were. I think Marcia Gay Harden, and Charlayne Woodard (Sister Peg) are also more like recurring characters, both who I love on the show!

I also loved Jonathon Tucker as the gay son of a psychiatrist who claims to be able to cure homosexuality. He's just so great in everything.

Erika Christensen.

She played a troubled FBI agent who needed help to track down a serial killer.  I thought she was compelling in that eppie.

so many folks have listed

so many folks have listed great guest stars, so i won't go there. but i will second your pick of erika christensen. she was surprisingly moving and poised. i was very impressed. but no one can beat regular cast member hargitay. "Undercover" was one of the best individual episodes I've seen in a very long while of any show. Marcia Gay Harden and Mary Stuart Masterson also pwned.
svufan's picture

agree...

I have watched this show since it debuted in 1999 and I have to agree that 'Undercover' is the single best episode I have seen. Mariska Hargitay did an outstanding job and deserves 100% an Emmy nod if not the win....

Erika Christensen

She was one hot FBI agent, depressing who she died though.
