"Grey's Anatomy" mini-cap: Kate Walsh returns with gaydar sharpened

Oh boy, was last night's episode of Grey's Anatomy a doozy, or what? Between staring at the returning gorgeousness of Kate Walsh and shushing my roommates (they're chatter-boxes!), I almost missed all the (not-so-sub) subtext in the episode.

The day starts off with a bang. Addison is back, Ava (Elizabeth Reaser) is pregnant, and MerDer's new clinical trial is in full swing. Except Addison mistakenly thinks nothing has changed, Karev blows Ava off, and the trial patient (tumor guy from last week) is getting worse. Uh oh.

The case Addison has returned to work on is the medically improbable patient of the day: A pregnant woman whose in-utero baby will be born with its heart on the outside of its body, and it seems as though half the doctors in Seattle Grace on working on the case.

But this is where things get good. When Callie joins Drs. Hahn and Montgomery in the hallway, the two new BFFs gush to each other about how great Addison is, and then reveal to Addison that Callie has gotten a divorce. They are finishing each other's sentences like old pros.

Erica: Does she know you're divorced? [Callie nods to Addison]
Addison: You're divorced?!
Erica: Which, as it turns out …
Callie: [smiles and nudges Erica] … is the best thing that could have happened, really.

The two stroll off into the distance — Callie's arm over Hahn's shoulders — and Addison watches them, mouth agape.

Ava found Karev again and tries to talk about her pregnancy, but he isn't having any of it. He storms out to go care for his pregnant patient with the overly happy husband. Karev does the Karev thing and starts yelling at the parents-to-be, telling them how hard everything is going to be and how unprepared they are. (Projection, much?)

But I don't mind, because it prompted my new favorite Bailey-ism: "Karev, right now you're feeling all your feelings right out in the open. Do me a favor and stuff them back in." It appears as though "the Nazi" is back. Thank goodness!

It's lunch time at Seattle Grace, and confrontations are abundant. Yang told Callie that Hahn is no longer allowed in their apartment, and after Callie told her to tell Hahn how she feels, Christina informs them that she "doesn't speak girl." Whatever that means.

Addison noticed how friendly Callie and Erica were earlier, and then witnessed the Callie-Christina exchange, so she humorously (but earnestly) asked Callie if she and Hahn were seeing each other. Callie laughs and denies and denies and laughs, but her expression alone says there is more to the story. (Note to Callie: Declaring that you "like penis" isn't exactly the most convincing way to squash those rumors. Humorous? Yes. Effective? Not so much.)

We find Christina inside sitting down with the other residents (plus George, the lowly intern), and she tries to "talk girl" by asking Alex about his feelings, but miserably fails at conversing like a normal human being. Callie interrupts to ask Christina and Meredith if they are ever mistaken for a couple (no, they are too busy "screwing boys"), and Yang finds another way to get to Hahn: She gives Callie an ultimatum. Either get Hahn to let her scrub in, or move out. When Callie suggests it to Erica, she agrees — if Callie buys their drinks at Joe's that night. Gulp.

Izzie has a pregnant patient who reveals she wants to abort the baby because she is HIV-positive, and Izzie doesn't know how to handle the situation. Meredith and Derek's clinical trial patient goes blind and they have to move the surgery up, and after trying to pimp his wife out the entire episode, the guys become nice for the first time just before surgery — which on this show is the kiss of death.

During the requisite surgery montage, we see both mother and baby survive (drama-inducing uncertainty included), but the tumor patient isn't so lucky.

After surgery, Addison stirs up more trouble by pressing Bailey as to what has been wrong with her, and Bailey verges on emotional. But being the hardass that she is, she remains only on the verge. Then Izzie finally grows some cojones (Gross. Forget I just said that.) and tells her pregnant HIV patient that she isn't discouraging the abortion because of some great political agenda, but because her baby has a 98 percent chance of being born healthy. (Wow!)

Elsewhere, in The Elevator of Awkward, Derek, Meredith, Addison, Rose and Mark all find themselves with no escape. I would have probably found this scene funnier if I cared even a smidgen about Derek's love life anymore. But, I don't.

Finally, the end of the day calls for a few drinks, and the doctors gather at Joe's bar. Addison, Callie and Erica are sipping wine and laughing at a table, and Callie appears like she is about to tell Erica about Addison's earlier inquisition when an intimate touch from Erica stops her in her tracks. The move doesn't go unnoticed by Addison, whose perception (and gaydar) seem to have improved greatly since moving to Los Angeles. McSleazy offers a dance to seemingly anyone in the room, and Callie (all too eager to prove her heterosexuality) downs a few shots and starts dancing.

While she shakes her groove thing deeper into the closet, Hahn can't take her eyes off her and calls her "beautiful" to Addison. (Am I dreaming, or did this scene really take place?)

The show closes with Izzie getting a report revealing that Ava isn't really pregnant, and Addison lets Meredith know how unhappy she is to learn that she and Derek have broken things off. Sadly, it looks as though Addison won't be returning again anytime soon.

I don't watch Grey's...

...but my girlfriend does. This final dance scene seems interesting. I may have to check it out. It's nice to see some LGBT characters on HUGE TV shows.

I used to watch Grey's

I used to watch Grey's when Kate was still in it,then I kind of lost interest. But I'm definitely going to watch it now to see what happens between Hahn and Callie.I hoped Addie would have stayed a little longer than one epi though. She's so beautiful and witty! :)

I wonder if its possible...

To switch Izzie for Addison because Private Practice does not utilze the awesome that is Kate as well as Grey's does. *sigh* I know, I'm dreaming; at any rate, I hope Addison will get to do a guest spot once a year to make up for it.

Karev

the guy who plays Karev has like 5 kids in real life.... i liked the ep. although i do think Addison should have more than one guest appearance. love Bailey she's hilarious. this ep. was def. interesting and i hope they keep going with the Callie Hahn storyline.

I adore Kate Walsh

And so glad she pretty much hit Callie on the head with a brick (because Callie was just that dense) letting her know that Hahn was into her. LOOOOVE that Addison has gaydar. Hate Hate Hate that she's not going to be on the show in the fall - why are they renewing Private Practice?? Love her, but only watch that show for her (on ABC.com and fastforward through any scenes she's not in)

Anyways, I was totally bored with Grey's this year (was my favorite show the first two years ), until now. Am liking it so much more with the Callie/Hahn storyline :) And definitely so over Meredith & Derek.

Huh?

The show closes with Izzie getting a report revealing that Ava isn't really pregnant

Really? I don't usually watch this show so maybe I'm missing something, but I was under the impression that it was Izzie's HIV-infected patient that wasn't pregnant after all. Is Ava also Izzie's patient?

I have mixed feelings about this episode. Watching Kate Walsh just makes me want her back on the show even more and bitter that she's not coming back. The Callie/Hahn thing is kind of tired, gay girl falling for the straight girl who will use her for emotional comfort (post-divorce trauma) and then dump her once the next Mr. Wonderful comes along. I swear I've seen this before about a million times. Couldn't they have found a smart, fun, accomplished gay/bi woman for Hahn to fall for? Is it too much to ask for Hahn to find someone who will treat her with some respect? Someone who will not grind up on the first available penis right in front of her? And since the average fruit fly has a longer life span than relationships on this show, I'm not holding out alot of hope even if they do go with this pairing.

Nah, it was Ava.

Ava's name I believe is Rebecca Pope which is what I'm pretty sure I heard the lab tech say when he handed Izzie the results.

I went to the Grey's Writer's Blog thingy and it confirms Ava/Rebecca as the one who is not pregnant.

Kate Walsh and Sara Ramirez

They just do it for me. Mm Mmm. And when Callie was was dancing at the end..Aye aye aye mami!  I forgot what the hell I was watching for a minute...

And Im sorry I know she has Private Practice and all, but Addison is needed back on GA bad as Izzy needs her personality back.  And Kate Walsh shouldn't of let Taye Diggs fine azz on the show because he is a tv jinx.  Anything he's in has been cancled.

I loved this episode. And I was getting misty eyed as "brain guy's" health was deteriorating.  That was sad, and I wish Derek would of pushed him to say I love you to his wife before he bit the dust.

Kate Walsh

My God I've missed her!!! I def agree with everyone who said that Shonda should bring Addie back to SG as soon as possible. This ep was by far best of S4, thanks to her.

And I just knew Hahn was a lesbian (or at least bi)! Yaaaay! Now if only she would hook up with Callie...or Christina... hell, bring Addie back and then she can hook up with Erica :) ....mmm, now, THAT would be just awesome... and plain HOT!

Addie's my favourite!!!!

I've missesd her too. Why don't bring her back permanently?????????

Am I the only one who found

Am I the only one who found the HIV storyline ridiculous?

If this woman had, in fact, been diagnosed at 19, and she has had the disease for at least five years (I'm not terribly good at guessing ages), wouldn't she know about the risk (or lack thereof) of giving birth as an HIV+ mother? I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I would have figured that her doctor (not Izzie - the one she sees for her HIV) would have told her about it.

I guess this was a plot to make Izzie appear more authoritative to her interns or whatever. It just seemed so silly to me.

On the plus side, at least we had Callie/Hahn moments and Addison back looking fabulous. Let's just hope Callie gets her head out of her ass.

Addison

Have to admit, Addison's presence in last night's episode just uped the ante of GA's watchability.  The episode before that...I was ready to give up on it.

Addison brought out all the interesting storylines...Bailey's news, Callie & Erica's budding romance...or not (personally I'm hoping for Christina & Erica). And she brought life back to the seriously downhill sliding GA.

Meredith & McDreary are REALLY BORING. And McSleazy seems to be superfluous right now. They might as well send him back to NY!

Izzie is grating, so is George and Meredith's sister (can't remember her name) is AWFUL. I can't make up my mind if the writers don't know what to do with her, or if she's just a bad actress.

Kate Walsh

Kate Walsh is a goddess.

Two can play that game!!

Best alternate ending!! Hahn should have followed suit and downed a few tequlia shots before seducing Addison as revenge!

Although I thing Addie is totally straight, from her reaction to Callie I suspect she experimented at least a little in college.... shes so the type!

Omnomnomnom.

I love how Clea Duvall was in this episode.

And Addison was back (hopefully permanently...), with a bangin' gaydar.

Annnnnd the realistic queerness. No tittilation factor here. Woo.

...and all was well, and the world smiled.

Kate is so much better on GA than Private Practice

I grew tired of trying to like Private Practice. I tried. I mean Kate and Amy on the same show? I'm over it now.

Callie is beautiful and I was so happy to hear Addison and Hahn say it.

I hate Izzie. What a waste of airtime.
