"Grey's Anatomy" mini-cap: Bailey and Yang deliver

Last week's Grey's — "The Becoming" — started off with an unexpected appearance by Preston Burke, Seattle Grace's former heart surgeon. And what was the occasion? He won a very prestigious medical award: the Harper Avery. Forgive me if I am not jumping for joy. Not only do I have obvious beef with real celebrity, but I never could get behind his character, either.

Dr. Torres and Dr. Sloan are still sleeping together (yuck) and Alex wants his (not really) pregnant girlfriend — Ava/Rebecca — to move in with him. Izzie, being armed with the knowledge that he didn't really knock her up, has obvious problems with that idea. Meredith and Derek have a new patient for their trial — a soldier in the U.S. Army.

George, Izzie, Lexie and Meredith are crowded around the article about Dr. Burke and discussing what Christina might think about it when — guess who — walks up. Izzie unsuccessfully tries to hide the clipping, but Yang sees it anyway and immediately walks away, becoming unwaveringly stoic for the majority of the episode.

The nurses have boycotted all of Dr. Sloan's surgeries because of his sleazy tendencies, and the nurses' union rep — who happens to be the chief's ex-wife, Adele — forces the hospital to institute a new "Date and Tell" policy, requiring all employees to report, in writing, which other employees they have slept with.

Next we found Dr. Yang in the morgue, where she was banished by Dr. Hahn to harvest hearts for research. When Lexie unsuccessfully tried to check on her, Yang started singing "Like a Virgin," which was possibly one of the funniest things she has ever done in any episode. I thoroughly enjoyed that scene, even though I found it a little creepy as well.

Callie hears Hahn say, "It's because I don't have a penis, isn't it?" and becomes very confused. Sadly, however, the conversation doesn't go where I wanted it to when Hahn began talking about how she deserved the Harper Avery Award more than Burke. There's a bit of flirtatious chat between the two of them, but Sloan swooped in just in time to dash our dreams. McGross said something inappropriate (what else is new?) which tips Hahn to the fact that the two of them are sleeping together and prompts her to walk away.

Meredith is putzing around Darren's room where he and Todd get in an argument about Todd being there. Though they are clearly having a lovers' quarrel, Meredith seems unfazed, and even though she stares at them through a deep, passionate kiss, it clearly isn't about the fact that they are both men; it is more about the fact that they are in love with each other and she is jealous. The couple's kiss is broken up when Mr. Covington caught them in the act, and Todd was swiftly kicked out of the room. (Check out AfterElton.com's take on the kiss and the rest of the soldiers' relationship.)

George was declared "The Chief's Intern" and given the task of distributing and collecting the forms for Date and Tell. Bailey, who the chief has exempted from the Date and Tell process, confronted the chief about not being required to fill out a form. She marched in with a form filled with (made-up) affairs and, in true Bailey form, pts him in his place:

This is a joke to you! I am a single woman. I have been a single woman for some time now. But the very idea that I could have a sexual encounter — a consensual sexual encounter — is a joke to you? So much so that you would single me out of this entire hospital as the one person who couldn't interest a member of the opposite sex. It's ... it's just … it's … just shame on you, sir. Just shame on you!

Hahn and Callie are scrubbing in for surgery and Hahn asks if they are on for a drink that night. Callie brushed off the question, and Hahn got upset saying that she doesn't make friends easily and she doesn't appreciate Callie hiding her relationship with Sloan from her. She is so endearing when she says, "I'm awkward and bad at small talk, and I generally don't like people I don't know." Ahh, it's funny cause it's true. Once more before she leaves, Hahn announces, "I don't make friends easily," and Callie looks genuinely saddened by the conversation. You and me both, Callie.

The chief has called Yang into his office because she hadn't yet filled out a Date and Tell form, so she does so in front of him, and he let her know that he realizes how hard it must be for her. What came next is hard to describe. Yang stood up for herself, which, in and of itself isn't surprising. But Yang stood up for her feelings, which isn't something the once hard-nosed doctor does too often. I could go on and on about the stellar performance (AE blogger the linster called it Emmy award-worthy!) that Sandra Oh delivered in this scene, nothing would do it justice quite like watching it. So, stop reading this for a moment and watch the clip here.

Sloan sulks around for a while at the end of the episode, upset that the nurses won't scrub in on his surgeries. Callie calls him "useless" when he's too depressed for sex and Bailey offers a him a backhanded favor by talking to the nurses for him, only to refer to him as a whore.

As per the standard Grey's formula, all the doctors finished the day at Joe's bar, where George comforts Lexie for being so forgetful to Alex, and for the first time all season, I actually find myself feeling a little bad for the girl.

Callie and Hahn are chatting by the dart boards, and Callie admits she's been avoiding her because, "when she was here, Addison said, well, she implied that we — that I was — that, um, you and I might be lesbians." (Cue the collective gasp by suburban families everywhere. The term "lesbian" was actually used on prime-time network television!)

But how did they react?

Oh yes, since laughter and awkward silence is the best way to deal with things.

So, what did you think of it all?

Nice episode

The episode was nice but I was a bit disappointed in the Callie/Hahn storyline, especially at the end when they talk about what Addison had said. Hahn just laughed and Callie joined in. I hope they'll really talk about it in the next episode

I loved this episode

I thought Sandra Oh was awesome this episode. I especially loved her singing Like a virgin while cutting open corpses.

My second fave scene was Hahn telling Callie she doesn't make friends easily.

I also really liked the story about the gay soldiers, even though having the one boy die while his bf isn't there was a bit much.

I'm not sure how to feel about the final Hahn-Callie scene. I like the way they react, because it probably means something is going to happen between them. But I am also disappointed, because it means that Hahn doesn't know she's gay yet either. Unless she's very closeted, I guess.

I think they're gonna go there...

That last moment played out like they were both thinking about it and guaging each other's reaction--and since the other person was laughing they had to laugh too. I hope they go there. I love both these characters and it goes without saying I love them more together.

The amusing thing to me has been how my straight friends have reacted to the whole thing. When I say I think the show is gonna go there, they all say "But Callie slept with Mark. But they laughed about it." Etc. They aren't picking up the subtext.

maggie's picture

I felt like that awkward

I felt like that awkward moment after the laughing was Callie and Erica realizing that what Callie said could be true. Now, I'm just hoping that they will finally act on it.

Late comer to the show...

I agree with swack and maggie...at least I want to agree...lol Hopefully the uncomfortable laughing is about underlying feelings and being "caught" having them!  I have to say, the gal playing Hahn is the same gal from the last season of Crossing Jordan and I swear she's playing the same character.  Awkward and vaguely unfriendly...and very guarded too.

good episode

I have to say that i loved that moment when Hahn talks about not making friends easily because word for word that describes me exactly and i felt it. But then later on when Christina has her breakdown/makes her speech before the chief I realised that I really hate the way Hahn is treating Christina. Sure at first it was a amusing, and Christina's single-mindedness is annoying but for Hahn to say that the reason she doesn't teach her ( i.e last episode) is because 'she reminds her of herself' is kind of lame and apalling. Christina for all her faults is a good student and dedicated and she deserves to be taught. The other interns are not treated that way by Hahn and I just realised how much that really affects Christina.

And the nurses refusing to work with Sloan was so ridiculous. I loved how Bailey called them out on it. They knew he was a 'whore' and they slept with him anyway and now they don't want to do their jobs, again ridiculous.

As to the last scene with Hahn and Callie and the awkward laughter, you just know something is up...it  was too forced. Also really loved the gay storyline.

man-whore-ettes

i totally agree with you about the nurses refusing to work with sloan. completely ridiculous. if he's a man-whore, and they knew it when they slept with him, what does that make all of them? and then all of a sudden they'r so hurt. give me a break.

and on a kind of related note, i was kind of surprised at the fact that there was no real opposition to the 'date and tell' policy that came up this episode. how invasive is that? i'd sure be pissed.

oh my god, and that kiss was probably the best i've seen on tv all season, and not just on this show. their whole story line just broke my heart!

as for hahn and callie...i honestly just have no idea what's up with that. i really like both of their characters separately, but thinking of them together just seems weird for some reason...maybe i'll grow to like it, if there's ever actually an "it" to like.

and one last thing: was no one thinking of weird al's "like a surgeon" when yang was singing? someone tell me it's not just me

YES! I went completely nuts over this while watching. No protests from anyone, really? Not one person thought: hey, isn't this a violation of my privacy? Do the constitutional rights against unreasonable searches (4th Amendment) and self-incrimination (5th Amendment) not apply to the employees of Seattle Grace?

Maybe I've taken one too many CON-LAW classes, but geez...

omg i cried twice watching that story. when he kissed his dead soldier's lips my heart broke into tiny little pieces. they did an amazing job with that, even though it ended in a tragedy.

callie/hahn

I practically fell out of my chair at the end, leaning forward, waiting for Hahn to say, "I am a lesbian".  I guess not this week.  Does anyone else wonder if they are advancing this story REALLY SLOWLY, so they can guage the reaction each step along the way, and change it if it seems to be getting a negative audience response?

Sandra Oh deserves an Emmy for that speech!

Blah

I was disappointed.

I only watched the first 3 episodes of this season (having only watched like one episode before) because I read on here that there would be a lesbian storyline.

I guess I got my hopes up too high and so I was disappointed.

I was happy for the man-on-man action though, although that storyline was quite saddening generally. I know that isn't most lesbian's cup o'tea but I'm a big queer boat so any queer action makes me a happy girl :). Plus I had to take it where I could get it.

Grey's doesn't really do it for me. It just feels like every fairly well-written 1hr drama series I've ever watched. But I'll prolly keep watching for now in hopes that the lesbian storyline will develop and because I need procrastination material.

Callie/Hahn thing

I'm hoping that they'll continue to explore the Callie/Hahn relationship. It was so obvious that Callie was overcompensating with the constant hopping to bed with McSteamy, to kind of try and reaffirm her heterosexuality. I'm not entirely sure how this goes, whether it's something heterosexual women do and they leave it at that. Other than having a bit of a freaking out, that is... or is there something else that Callie is trying to deny.

I'm really hoping that at least Hahn will turn out to be gay or at least bi... heck, I wouldn't mind TWO bi characters on a prime time show and it would be cool if they'd actually end up together and not in a heterosexual relationship. That'd be something... new, I guess.

Either way, I really like the kind of friendship that has formed between Callie and Hahn. It's great to see and I wouldn't mind seeing them a bit more. I'm kind of sick of the whole Meredith/McDreamy thing that when they show anyone else, I'm happy.

stellar episode

Well, well, well...Grey's has made a huge leap in quality in the last episode. I agree with the linster that the Sandra Oh scene with the Chief was Emmy award winning quality! Thanks god they're writing decent dialogue for Christina again. For a while there, she was given pathetic storylines and boring dialogue. (I was going to give an example, but they were so unmemorable that I can't!)

Loved the gay soldiers story, loved Bailey's tirade against the chief, loved the Torres/Hahn comversation while they were scrubbing out. The end of the episode was classic cliff hanger, their response could lead into so many possible directions :)

Hope the writers keep up the calibar of the writing. I was close to giving up in the show not that long ago.

However, Mededith's sister(who's name I cannot remember) remains deeply irritating. And it really is time for George to change somehow...

BiRobot's picture

In agreement with most folks here

This episode was quite possibily the best of the season. The writing was on par and in-character for everyone, and the storylines were played bittersweetly and were, for the most part, pretty heartbreaking. Sandra Oh sold that monologue in the Chief's office, and the gay military storyline was not only realistic, but human.

As for Torress and Hahn, the laugh reminded me of Callie's reaction when Addison first brought the whole lesbian issue up: kinda over the top, but clearly hiding something. That pause at the end just solidified it. Something's definitely going to happen between those two.

And Bailey was, is, and will forever be my hero.

loved the ep, loved the mini-cap, except for one thing...

I'm so tired of the Isaiah Washington snide comments from people who clearly don't know what they're talking about *[this will be a tirade, skip now if you choose, you've been warned].  When did we assume someone was always in the right, because, GASP, they were gay?  The sad truth:  TR used the incident as a negotiating tool for a higher paycheck. Isaiah was arguing with Patrick Dempsey and said the infamous line "I'm not your little fag." Was using the F word completely wrong? Hell yeah!! But 1) it was NEVER directed at TR, and 2)TR was not even on set or near the two when they were arguing (in trailer).  GLAAD and ABC made Isaiah jump through political hoops, and he still got fired.  So I'm sorry to play the devil's advocate or whatever its called, but we (as the LGBT community) hate to be judged by people who don't know us, and yet we turn around and do the same?  Go figure.
carolinagrrrl's picture

For the record...

I never said (nor implied) that anything Isaiah Washington may have done had anything to do with TR Knight. As you pointed out, it is widely known (he has even admitted it) that Washington did use the word "fag" in some form or another while on set. He later went on to say more ridiculous things of the same nature at an awards ceremony or two, as well. That alone is reason enough to have beef with Washington--which is as far as my "snide comments" went.

Thanks for reading though, and I'm glad you liked it otherwise.

incredible episode...

I LOVE Taken by Trees' "Only Yesterday" ... it was playing toward the end of the episode.

Sandra Oh is so immensely talented! I agree that her scene with the Chief was Emmy worthy.

Hahn & Callie .. eh.  Don't really know how to feel about that. They're cute but I was a little thrown off when I realized that Hahn wasn't sure about the gay.  Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Really? Somehow I doubt that anyone who consecutively watches Grey's Anatomy was flabbergasted by the word "lesbian" ... it's kind of a hippie liberal little show.

Hahn's reaction

It might be just me, but it almost seemed like Hahn was doing one of those "quick lets try and throw them off my trail" laughs. Just my opinion.

anyone else get TV Guide?

sounds like there is a kiss looming for Hahn and Callie in this weeks new episode!  i'd rather see her and Christina...but i'll settle for her and Callie.  Callie is beautiful, i just like the dynamic between Hahn and Christina better.
pecola's picture

I thought this was, by far,

I thought this was, by far, the best post-strike episode of Grey's so far. The solidiers' storyline was just heartwrenching and beautifully played. I agree wholeheartedly with the characterization by Dan at Afterelton: it was "one of the most sensual, emotional and damn near heart-breaking gay kisses I've ever seen on network television." It was the most subtle, yet convincing, arguments I've seen on television for allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military that we could hope for...

I appreciate everyone's love for Sandra Oh--and that speech to the chief was amazing--but it really is Chandra Wilson that just kills it for me every week. Her exchange a two weeks ago with Addison and then last week with the Chief and on Sloan's behalf...she just brings it every week. Consistently brilliant, certainly Emmy worthy.

I think Hahn's reaction to Callie admission was a deflection. Callie had clearly been ignoring her, so once Hahn understood why, she had no choice but to try and laugh off the situation. I like the build up--it seems true to many of my friends' experiences with formerly straight women. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes...

...or maybe I'm just looking forward to seeing more Sara Ramirez.

Whatever.

TV GUIDE ARTICLE

Here is part of the article from TV Guide about the Kiss...  I thought I would post it for those of you who may have heard all the talk but have not read the article yet!  I totally have my fingers crossed for the kiss to be a Dr. Hahn and Dr. Torres kiss!!!!

Question: Wanna tell us who is gonna be involved in the super-secret, special, surprising kiss in the Grey’s Anatomy season finale?

Ausiello: First, let’s explain to the class what you’re referring to, Mandy. In the current issue of TV Guide, guest columnist Shonda Rhimes offers a first-person preview of the show’s final five episodes — and she saves the best for the last paragraph. “A lot happens in these five episodes,” she writes. “And it all ends with a kiss. A good kiss. A great kiss. A kiss so good it makes you lean into your televisions. A kiss we never saw coming. Oh, it’s a major kiss.” Unfortunately, I come bearing no clues since I honestly have no idea whose lips will be smacking. She kind of threw me for a loop with the whole “kiss we never saw coming” bit.

Grey's Threesome?

Here's one of the previews for next week. Threesome? Video Camera? It looks pretty male friendly...

How I Interpreted It

The way I looked at the laugh at the end, at least for Hahn, was for Hahn to be like, "Hahahahaha... I'm gay."
Canuckgrrl's picture

khaki herrings

Disappointed that they threw  the gay soldier storyline and that kiss into this ep, knowing that (some? most?) viewers are waiting on the Erica/Callie thing.  (The last scene between then was totally misplayed imo.) Yes, it's hip/hippie/liberal/GLAAD-friendly Grey's, but it is still on a major network.  They will drag it out to the finale - where I would certainly be surprised if there is a super-secret, special, major kiss that I cared anything about.
starbuck's picture

Hahn's Character is NOT gay.

At least not an out one. Twice since she was introduced as a regular cast member, Hahn has affirmed her attraction to men. Once, right off the bat, when she told Yang she dates men (referring to Yang's habit of sleeping with her mentors), and the second time when she told Slone that had it not been for them working together, they would probably already be… (… and excuse me while I shudder).

So as far as we know, Hahn is either straight, or bi (can't see her as a closeted lesbian. It's too far from her in-your-face 'tude).

That being said – I do believe they're taking the Hahn/Callie thing somewhere. The building of the story doesn't make sense otherwise. Yeah, there was denial, and awkward laughter and the sleeping with the man-whore… but in the Grey-verse that just means foreplay. We've seen it with Yang and Burke on season one, and with Izzy and Gorge on season three.

It's just the way it's done on that show, and it's part of its appeal.

If it was going nowhere – there would be no over-the-top-awkward laughter. Just laughter. There would be no weird moments between them with double-meanings and the stop-breathing-while-she-gently-touches-my-lips moments, and there would definitely not be excessive sex-a-thons with McSleazy like Callie has something to prove.

If they're both straight, and suddenly – at their age – find themselves attracted to each other, then all of those thing make perfect sense.

Can't say I know how it'll end up. Maybe they'll go for it (with a sudden but drop-dead-sexy kiss). Maybe they'll try it and realize it sound better in theory. Maybe they'll ease into it with a nice, safe and wholesome threesome… who knows?

Point is – unlike some – I don't want the show to push it. Slow is good. It's nice, and teasing and very realistic. And most of all – done right, it'll make the general public root for them, something that would never happen if it's done too fast and too out of the blue.
