"Grey's Anatomy" mini-cap: The docs scrub back in

The effects of the writers' strike are finally dwindling down this week, as many of our favorite shows are back on the air with new episodes. Such is the case for Grey's Anatomy, as last night it aired its first new episode, "Where the Wild Things Are," in four months.

When we last left the docs, it seemed as though every relationship was falling apart. Meredith and Derek were on the outs, and it appeared as though Derek was going to start seeing Rose, a nurse. Izzie and George had finally halted their ill-fated attempt at a relationship after George's cheating broke up his marriage to Callie. Dr. Bailey's husband, fed up with always coming second in her life, left her after she canceled yet another date. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan had failed multiple attempts at getting with Seattle Grace's newest heart surgeon, Erica Hahn, and Lexie (Meredith's sister turned intern) was just trying to figure out where she fit into the whole equation.

The episode opens to images of sleeping residents — well, all but Meredith, who is sitting silently in a therapy session. Cut to new roommates Lexie and George (doesn't that guy get to stay anywhere for more than a few months?), and the living conditions aren't exactly pretty.

After a mass page, Meredith, Izzie and Christina race to the hospital, mumbling about a contest, about which Bailey denies all knowledge to Chief Webber. What is said contest? Don't worry, we don't know either.

They speed to the ambulance bay just as Derek walks in with new beau, Rose, but the consoling of Meredith is brief — there are lives to be saved and contests to be won! Alex finally catches up and chastises the others for not waking him. I say boy needs to get an alarm clock.

Izzie gets the first trauma patient (Cheech Marin!) who has a fractured ankle, and Bailey comes to herd her residents back inside when a car pulls up with three occupants. The three had been camping and were mauled by a bear, oh my!

After a disgusting display of intestines (yes, intestines), we hear what happened: One of the men, Phillip, was petting a bear cub, who then bit his hand and wouldn't let go. When Scott (intestine guy) tried to help, mama bear arrived and squashed the attempt — and Scott — post-haste. The car's third occupant is Jennifer, Phillip's new wife, whom we learn he knew for only 10 days before marrying. I think I'll let that joke write itself.

Izzie goes into a supply closet looking for materials needed on her ankle patient. Citing contest rules, she tells George that she thinks there is more to his case than a simple fractured ankle, and she can earn 80 points for solving a medical mystery. Inexplicably, Lexie is seen in this episode, almost exclusively, stealing medical supplies.

Next, we see Meredith talking to Phillip and Jennifer, where Phillip begins revealing too much about their personal life. Meredith clearly makes the connection between their shotgun wedding and Derek and Rose's budding relationship, and has had enough. Yet, when she leaves the room Jennifer follows her, almost in tears about the idea that she could simply be Phillip's rebound girl. While consoling her, Meredith spots blood dripping down the side of Jennifer's face, removes her cap, and discovers that a large portion of her scalp has been detached. And this is where I officially reached my gross-out quota for the episode.

After the McGorgeous twins examine Jennifer, they conclude that she has no brain damage and will not need plastic surgery. Almost simultaneously, Meredith receives the brush-off from Derek and passes off the chance to earn points by telling George to suture Jennifer's head. Something is fishy, no?

Meredith reveals to George that she thinks Phillip may have a neurological problem that is affecting his judgment and behavior. After all, he married someone he knew for less than two weeks and pet a bear — there's gotta be something more wrong with him, right? George accuses her of just wanting an excuse to talk to Derek, and the shrink Meredith had been meeting with sees the exchange. Add two more sessions to that prescription, please.

Elsewhere, Alex and Christina are fighting over sutures, Izzie is still failing at identifying (let alone solving) a medical mystery, and Lexie's kleptomania continues. Seriously, how does no one see her leaving with all that stuff? Mid-thieving, Lexie runs into Rose and Derek getting googly-eyed over each other, and Rose reveals to her that she loves Derek. After realizing that they don't even know each other, Rose splits, leaving Lexie to see that Meredith observed the entire interaction. Uh oh.

Izzie, with blind determination, is still giving her ankle patient complex medical procedures, and Bailey notices. Meredith becomes more suspicious of a brain tumor in her bear-petting patient when his brother declares he is going through an early midlife crisis. And this is the point of the episode where I got slightly bored. Yawn.

Begrudgingly, after serious negotiations, Meredith convinces Phillip to undergo an MRI to test for a brain tumor. Jennifer is defiant that the tumor won't be there, but I foresee disappointment all around.

Christina has abandoned the suturing at this point, instead opting to observe Dr. Hahn perform heart surgery, though she knows it will likely force her to lose the contest. And, in her absence, Scott's sutures burst and he bleeds to death on Alex's watch.

The doctors decide to bring all the good news at once, and simultaneously tell Phillip and Jennifer about the ever-present tumor and Scott's death. Phillip begins laughing, a side effect of the tumor, and Jennifer asks Meredith whether she was a symptom for the tumor.

Finally, the day has ended, and thus, the contest. Bailey declares Meredith the winner after solving the medical mystery put her over the top. You can practically see steam coming off Izzie's head. Bailey bestows upon Meredith the prize: a pager that looks like it has been through a Bedazzler a couple hundred times, and informs the other residents that each time they get a surgery for the next three months, they must offer it to Meredith via the glowing pager.

As the episode winds down, Mark tells Derek that Rose isn't the girl for him, and the Chief reveals to Izzie that he lost the contest back in the day, as well. Christina goes home to the apartment that she and Callie share, only to find Hahn there as well, so she holes herself up in her room. George returns to his "crapartment" (his words), to see the plethora of stolen goods decorating it. Lexie rambles about how much she wants George to like living there, and how she wants a friend, and it appears to work.

Lastly, Meredith proposes an idea for a clinical trial that she would need Derek's help on because he is "one of the best" and assures him it has nothing to do with their relationship. In the favor of symmetry, the show closes with Meredith at the therapist's office again, spilling her guts out.

All in all, this episode felt more like Season 1 than any have in a long time, which is a good thing. And the previews for next week make me hopeful for a gay (!) character to grace Seattle Grace as more than just a fleeting patient. Oh how glorious a Hahn-Callie pairing would be. Thoughts?

Clea DuVall

Was the waitress played by Clea DuVall?  I almost didn't recognize her!  Glad I have my GA back because I refuse to watch ER.
carolinagrrrl's picture

yes!

Yes, that was Clea DuVall! Wow, I can't believe I didn't recognize her...

Good catch, shedetective! You're living up to your name!

Yeah, when I read this, I

Yeah, when I read this, I was wondering why you never mentioned Clea Duvall! Bcos when I first saw the ep, I was like oh wow Clea Duvall! And I agree she looks a bit different..

Why do you recap Grey's Anatomy?

I don't like the show and there is NOTHING gay about this show. I'm actually going into the medical profession and all the crap thats on here is fake. No one look or acts the way they do it's ridiculous.

PS. Most doctors are in their 50's an married. AND don't hook up, they'd get fired or sent to another facility.

It's just a tv show sweetheart

Oh Rachel its just a tv show..

"Most doctors are in their 50s and married and don't hook up"

Yes, but how old were they when started out as interns and started their residency? Had to be in their 20s or early 30s

And I worked in an Emergency Room for 2 years, so I know for a fact doctors AND nurses hook up, they just didnt get caught....

c'mon rachel, you're too cute to have a bad attitude..lol

BAS's picture

Most interns are 26

The average med student starts at age 22, right after graduating from college, and graduates from med school at at 26.

The intern year of residency, which is what the first few seasons of Grey's covered, is the first year after med school and therefore most interns are 26.

Even the other residents are probably at most in their early 30s.

I am certain that human nature is in effect in hospitals (maybe more so - my friends in med school tell me it's like they are all stuck in middle school) and people hook up. As long as nobody is anyone's direct supervisor, I don't see why they'd get fired. So the doctor/nurse pairing actually strikes me as more ok than the resident-intern pairings we've had before (Meredith/Mcdreamy, Cristina/Burke, George/Calleigh). And certainly intern-intern or resident-resident pairings are co-worker relationships and while possibly not a good idea, probably not fire-able.

There have been gay supporting characters (the guy who owns the bar and his boyfriend) , and many "random" gay characters which I appreciate.

And there are lots of strong women, and AfterEllen does plenty of reviews and articles on issues that aren't technically gay. If you don't like the show, don't read the recaps.

Mini-recaps

I like these new mini-recaps (Can we expect more?).

I don't get to watch that much TV these days-and I am way behind on several shows-so it's a nice way to still be able to follow what's going on.

Hopefully, yes!

Yes, we'd like to do more mini-recaps. Please bear with us as we work out the kinks and figure out how we can best lesbianish them all up for you ...
mercury's picture

I'm glad you're recapping

I'm glad you're recapping this show (especially given the potential for a gay character... hopefully!) but I've got to say that for an AfterEllen blog post, you kind of missed all the good stuff. Such as the fact that the young wife was played by Clea DuVall (as mentioned above) and the scene where Callie and Hahn walk into the hospital together, and then Callie tells Christina that they never made it home because... "well, you know".

Anyway, I know that last part is probably being dissected to death in the forums, but just thought I'd mention it. If you're going to recap this show on a lesbian blog, please include the (mildly, potentially wishful-thinking) lesbian parts!

Bridget's picture

I completley agree. I

I completley agree. I thought that maybe they could become a couple after I saw them walk in to the hospital together, and casually explain their night out... I've had gay thoughts about Hahn and I'm pretty that's why I like her more than most other characters on the show.

Anyways, all I can do is be hopeful! =)

MandaLeah's picture

I must say I like these

I must say I like these mini-recaps as well, they are just the right size.

Btw, did anyone else notice the colour change in Erik Danes hair? Although I had heard somewhere that the network didn't like that his hair was "salt & pepper". What is this world coming to?

I found this episode rather underwhelming. I hope we get to see more of Callie and Hahn, but how dare they tease us about a hook up, has Shonda ever even written in a lesbian patient? Not to mention that ABC has kinda been de-gaying things lately (specially with the changes to Ugly Betty)

BiRobot's picture

Not a patient but...

In the episode "Break on Through" (the one were Meredith revives a DNR patient), the daughter of the patient is a lesbian and she and her partner show up to sign some forms.  Their screentime is less than 5 minutes, but people specifically refer to them as lesbians (not as a good or bad thing, just as a thing).  They definitely need to work on that, though.  There's been a couple storylines involving gay men, why not women?

Who was the therapist?  She

Who was the therapist?  She looked so familiar and I know I should know her name!
swack's picture

Amy Madigan

The therapist, Dr. Wyatt, was played by Amy Madigan. She's probably best known for movies like FIELD OF DREAMS and UNCLE BUCK. I love her, and with all the controversy over older female actors having what looks to be disfiguring plastic surgery to hide their age, it was nice to see a woman comfortable enough in her own skin to play a role with very little makeup and less of the usual "glamour" that TV likes to drape over everybody. I thought she looked beautiful and like a REAL doctor.

Also...

She also played Iris Crowe on Carnivale. One of the most gorgeous 57-year-olds I know!

sorry, GA's jumped the shark

That whole competition thing?

BORED.ME.TO.TEARS.

The writing generally has gotten really sloppy. None of the storylines has any traction whatsoever. Its such a waste of good actors, especially Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson.

And Meredith's sister? Just irritating.

Hahn+Callie=HoT

A Hahn-Callie pairing would be HOTTTTTTTT

They both seem like tops though. It'd be fun to see how they figure that one out... :0)

Grey's Anatomy...

I have to say that the best things about this episode were Amy Madigan (I'm a big fan of both her and her husband, Ed Harris), seeing Clea Duvall (who I miss not seeing on Heroes), all the interactions between Dr. Torres and Dr. Hahn and the subsequent jealousy of Dr. Yang because of this.

I don't know whether this episode was written pre or post the writers strike, so perhaps that's why the show seemed a bit uneven to myself (and others). I don't know that the show "jumped the shark" per say, but I too am a bit tired of the contest aspect of the doctors and interns and hope that the show will get back on track soon.

I'd also like to see the writers get Izzie back on track... it used to be Meredith who annoyed me (okay, she still does) but now they just keep making Izzie more and more annoying. I want back the Izzie from season 1. I'm also still annoyed with Kate Walsh/Dr. Addison being shipped off to Los Angeles. The character of Dr. Addison brought a lot to the show and I just can't bring myself to watch Private Practice since they've essentially ruined what a great character Dr. Addison was.

That being said, I'll take as much of Dr. Torres and Dr. Hahn as we're given, because both of these wonderful actresses bring a lot to their roles, and it's really fun to watch them on screen.

I love Grey's

I don't care if they have gay characters or not. I love this show and I'm glad its back. recaps are cute and fun. Don't know about anyone else but Mc-Dick(Derrick) is starting to pluck my nerves.

Oh and fireworks next week Adison is back - yahoo!! They need a hunk for Christine - she cracks me up.

Not Going to Comment...

On how many times Attendings/Residents/Students and nurses hooked up in various ways...and that's just in the operating room.  That was life in a big hospital...and yeah, the drama still happens on a smaller scale at suburban hospitals.

You gotta figure, we all spend more time with each other...in life or death situations...than these folks do with their spouses.  It's a fact of life.

However, I quickly learned you don't poo where you eat...so to speak.  Just say no to workplace drama and don't screw around!

On another note, my other half and I can't watch any medical drama without me rolling my eyes or sighing...I get so frustrated at some of the shows...but I have to remind myself it's just tv!  Enjoy it for what it is.  Gray's is highly entertaining.

The best thing about that

The best thing about that episode was the promo for next week and the surprising (for me) appearance of Addie. I'd totally forgotten that she was supposed to come back to GA for one episode, so that was a pleasant surprise.

And I agree about the Hahn/Callie goodness. I was wondering why you hadn't mentioned their interactions during the entire episode, because they were just way too couple-y to be true. Heh. I might actually start watching regularly again because of them (at least until they start fighting over the same man...)

Warning: Spoilerish post

Don't write off Grey's as having no gay content just yet. I'm not a big follower of the show, but I watched this episode. Hahn and Callie were quite coupley. Afterwards, I asked my sister (who is a big fan) if anything was brewing there, and she enlightened me on an interesting spoiler tidbit from the next episode with Addison talking to Erica about Callie. I also saw a promo where Addy asked Callie if she and Hahn were a couple. Didn't get to see anything of her reaction, but I saw another sneak peak where Callie approached Meredith and Cristina and asked them if anyone had ever thought they were a couple, so it's clearly on her mind.

Shonda Rimes mentioned in TV Guide (or something of that nature) that the season will end with a surprising kiss. She's already confirmed in the press that there will be a Meredith/Derek reunion, so that's off the table as a surprise. Callie/Erica fits the criteria. I think I'll stayed tuned for now.

Didn't miss much

I used to love this show.  I'm not sure if it's just a change in tastes, or the character development, but I'm struggling to pretend to be interested anymore.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm sick to death about with the whole Derek/Meredith on-again, off-again relationship.  It bores me anymore.  I still absolutely love Cristina, but she's lost some of her edge as she tries desperately to get on Hahn's good side....I love when she's at her sarcastic, competitive, biting best.  Sandra Oh rocks!

As for Callie/Hahn....it would be nice to see some gay content on the show.  But, I really don't like Hahn, so I would rather see Callie hook up with one of the other cast members (her and Addison would have been hot!).  But, as long as Sara Ramirez is getting more screen time, I'll watch!

prettyinblack33's picture

I completely agree

with your Christina/Callie/Hahn comments. Christina's one of my favorite characters but she's not been herself since she's been clamoring for Hahn's attention.

The jury's still out on Hahn but I love, love, love Callie and although I'm not particularly amped about a Callie/Hahn coupling, I'm a-ok with any reason to get her more screen time!

Thanks for the mini-cap carolinagrrl!

Are you serious?!

Are you serious?! that hahn and callie have a thing for each other that is more than a colleagues should be?? never thought about that. but i agree that most of the time on screen, they're almost always together! haha a really funny thought. but i think hahn has a little something something... maybe she's a closeted lesbian in the show? haha im just guessing. because her character comes out so strong and aggresive. nevertheless it's all cool :) can't wait for the next ep. thanks for the recap carolinagrrrl! :)

I only started watching

I only started watching Grey's from S3 so I don't know what happened during the first 2 seasons but I have to admit I'm already tired of McDreamy/Meredith. Just get together already!!

This first post-strike episode kinda disappointed...maybe I was expecting too much after waiting for so long but it just lacked something. Hope it's too early to judge!

Loving these mini-caps though ;)
