“Grey’s Anatomy” mini-cap: A satisfying finale from the Seattle Grace staffI have to start out by saying this: Thank you, Shonda Rhimes. Thank you for bringing Grey’s Anatomy full circle, and back to the show that I fell in love with four years ago. Early on, we get a little update on each of the characters. Meredith is revealing to Dr. Wyatt that her mother once slit her wrists in front of her, yet Meredith ironically is the one to cheer up the still funk-ified Cristina by giving her the sparkle pager. Derek tells Sloan and the chief that he is selling his land, Alex is still caring for the near-catatonic Ava while Izzie covers his shift. Next we see Callie and Sloan, um, enjoying each other’s company in an on call room. Callie appears to be enjoying herself until Sloan dirties up the encounter with talk of bringing Erica into the equation. Luckily for Callie (and my eyes), her pager goes off because of a trauma, and they had to cut things short.
After an awkwardly amusing conversation in the hallway where everyone agrees that Callie is acting weird, several of the doctors head into the pit to see what the trauma is, and for the first time, I think everyone in Seattle Grace was speechless. Their patient, a 19-year old young man, was entirely encased in gradually hardening concrete after being dared to jump in by a group of his “friends.” (Some friends, I say.) They finally begin chipping away at the concrete, and Bailey promises the (justifiably) terrified young man that he will live. By far, the best part of these scenes were the stolen glances between Hahn and Torres.
Elsewhere in the hospital, Derek and Meredith are preparing to treat their last two patients of the trial when they discover that the two teens not only know each other, but are in love with each other. It seems that Beth (brilliantly played by Jurnee Smollett) and Jeremy met in their chemotherapy support group, much to Beth’s parents’ distaste. But, MerDer throw out the book on parents’ wishes (as well as the one on ethics) and help Beth and Jeremy sneak into an empty room to lose their virginity. Seriously.
George told Lexie how helpless he felt being so close to power without actually having any, and that somehow led to her breaking into the chief’s office to steal employee files. I don’t really know why exactly she did that, but armed with the tainted info, she gave George the guts he needed to stand up to the chief, and ultimately, George will be given another shot at the intern exam. Predictably, Jeremy (the first of the lovebirds to go into surgery) doesn’t make it, and Ava finally hits rock bottom by splitting her wrists with a butcher knife. Alex still doesn’t seem to get the severity of Ava’s psychosis, and Izzie has to physically restrain Alex to make him realize that he is in over his head and cannot take care of Ava by himself. (Oh, and did I mention that during the course of their exchange, Alex reveals that he had to care for his psychotic mother when he was a child? It seems as though Alex is much more damaged than we all thought — poor guy.) One of the most satisfying moments of the entire episode came in the operating room this time: Cement Boy is on the table, and there are complications — something is wrong with his heart, but there isn’t time to page Hahn, so Cristina volunteers to cut in, and the chief gives her the green light. Just after she starts, however, Erica walks in and starts berating Cristina for doing things wrong when Cristina’s missing hard shell finally reformed and she snaps, “Shut up and let me work!”
Meredith (who spends more time these days as a patient than she does as a doctor) finally has a breakthrough with Dr. Wyatt, and finds peace with the fact that her mother didn’t actually want to kill herself — she just wanted Chief Webber’s attention and wasn’t “extraordinary” enough to simply ask him for it. Beth survived her turn on the operating table, and Meredith and Derek’s clinical trial finally has their first success story, which I surprisingly find quite fulfilling and gratifying.
As the season comes to a close, Bailey hands over the clinic to Izzie because she cannot handle all of her duties and motherhood simultaneously, Cristina embraces her teacher role by showing Lexie how to suture, Alex asks Izzie for a consolation-shag, Chief Webber successfully goes home to his wife and Lexie blushes at a platonic kiss that George plants on her in gratitude. But the real surprise came in the form of Dr. Mark Sloan. Leaving the hospital, Callie tries to get him back in bed, but he recognizes where her head’s been all day and encourages her to go talk to Erica instead. But after berating a teenage girl for not showing her real emotions for Cement Boy, Callie must have realized the need for her to express her own feelings, because she heeds Mark’s advice and heads over to Erica. What happens next is why TiVo was invented: Let’s count a few of the possibly less obvious things I love about that kiss: 1) The fact that Sloan just walked away and let them be, 2) the realism of Callie’s nerves leading up to The Kiss (kudos, Sara Ramirez), 3) Callie’s smile when she broke away, and 4) the fact that it was on one of the most watched hours of television this year. Can I get an amen? Lastly, after searching all over Seattle for each other, Meredith and Derek finally meet up on the land behind Shepherd’s house, where Meredith has somehow had the time (and supplies) to lay out a rough blueprint of their imaginary house in candles. For the first time in about two years, I actually cared about the viability of their relationship, and yet I couldn’t get past the unfeasibility of what Meredith accomplished in such a short time. So what did you all think? Will the Callie/Hahn storyline progress or get painfully dropped? Do Izzie and Alex sleep together? Will George pass his test this time around? Will Meredith be less annoying in Season 5 now that she actually seems happy? Well, whatever happens, I cannot wait to see what Shonda has in store for us next season. YAY for Callie and Erica!!
I have to say I did really enjoy the season finale, obviously especially the Callie/Erica/Sloan storyline. I would have liked a bit more passion/heat in their kiss, but I'm gonna take whatever they gives us!! I really hope that they get to be happy at least a bit next season. Happy couples are not exactly usual for Grey's, but still. I want their relationship to be interesting, eg will they come out?, but I want some happy scenes with those two, cause they have chemistry! I'm wondering how Sloan will actually deal with it.... it seems that they will get a shot at their love, because I think shonda is serious about those two, like she is about every relationship, so its not just for ratings, and thats really great!
you're right, somehow the season finale made meredith at least a bit less anoying. even though I just found the thing with the candles so unrealistic, I just did not believe it!!
does anyone know wheter Sara Ramirez is straight?? a girl can dream, right?
http://babydyke.blogspot.com/ - my take on all things lesbian
Since it is all over now....
The firing of Brooke Smith was disgraceful, yet expected. Please go to ABC.com and hit the CONTACT US link to tell them exactly what you think. Thanks to this wimpy move, lesbians now have ZERO viability on prime time TV which has over 600 characters. If gay people are 10% of the population (as are African Americans) this is so sad considering we jumped a major hurdle for equality electing our first African American president ---but the US is still proving that gays are the last group of people you don't even have to tolerate.

I love Sara Ramirez!
I thought this was one of the best episodes of Grey's ever. I am so glad the writers got back to what made the show great in the first place.
I am just so excited about this storyline. I have loved Sara since she was in Spamalot. So as soon as her and Erica became friends I was so excited. Those two definitely have undeniable chemistry and I am so excited to see how it develops.
She is unfortunately straight. She is a big time friend of the community, but she is straight. :( But, she is so beautiful and talanted we can look past that. :)
love, love, love
I'm just totally in love with these two characters!:D Bit addicted... but I'll get over it;) Can't wait for the next season, and I sure hope that Shonda isn't going to screw this up. If they split up, which of course eventually happens, I hope it makes sense and is done in a good way. Never watched the rest of the show, just started watching for them, so I don't really have a bond with any of the other characters, but I've decided the start watching the show from the beginning, because I actually really like the way it's been written.
Question, did you use my edit on youtube, or did someone just edit it exactly the same way? Haha! Not that it matters. Just curious:p I guess it was 'stolen' by someone else first and then used by you. Who cares, hehe:p

Hey Hes!
Hey Hes!
First of all, enjoy the first season. It's the shortest, but, IMO, the absolute best!
Secondly, I don't think I used your edit. I definitely used one that was already posted to dailymotion, but perhaps they used the version you put on youtube! Either way, I'm glad you liked them enough to make it!! (If I had any talent in that area, I'm sure I would have done the same!)
Cheers!

You're BetweenThaLines!
And yes, I noticed there were two "similar" videos on YouTube. I think I commented on the other one.
Well... Just wanted to say: You're my only subscription!!
Oh, Callie. Oh, Erica. OH Callie WITH Erica! New obsession and I'm watching just becaue of these two.
Carolinagrrrl, I figured
Carolinagrrrl, I figured as much. It still might be the case that someone edited it exactly the same way, although that'd be strange:p But it's fine, since the material isn't mine either and I just put some things together a certain way.
And yes I am IfOnly:p Do you know where you saw it, since I can't find it on youtube. I'm not planning on doing anything, I'm just curious:p And thanks for subscribing!

Hey
Hey Hes funnily enough I recently subscribed to your channel and was watching your video's last night-thanks for the great work and keep it up.
Anyway loved Callica and hope it continues after Cashmere Mafia (gag me) ABC owe us one lol.
I was watching your videos last night too.
great job by the way.
I'm in Australia and we're still a few weeks away from these episodes so it was great to be able to see what all the fuss was.
Danke
Hey there Hes,
Its great to see you on AE. I stumbled upon your youtube channel this past weekend and have been obsessively playing the Die Leibwächterin clips. The weekend is over but I've yet to come down from that "Ulrike Folkerts" high! Jeez!
Thanks so much for putting it up.
Haha! But I've been here
Haha! But I've been here way before I ever started a channel on youtube:p Great you love Die Leibwächterin as much as I do!

Wow
I loved the run-up to the
I loved the run-up to the kiss and as you said, the nerves were written all over Callie's face. But I was also very distracted (and concerned!) about the trenchcoat that Hahn was wearing. I'd really have to have the hots for someone to ignore that minor fashion-detail.But on a more serious note,I hope future episodes will explore this relationship and show its ups and downs and not just let it be a 'novelty' gimmick to fill the gay-quota.As for Meredith,in my humble opinion she remains one of the most annoying,tedious,self-absorbed,selfish characters and I wish Derek would've ditched her ages ago.I know I know, the show rests on the tension between the two but hell's bells,he is,quite objectively,an amazing guy and deserves a kick-ass chick with fewer neuroses.
I think Sara Ramirez is indeed straight (sniff) but hell yeah,a girl can dream!
Amen to you!
It was a great finale!
and waiting for more next season!
Cencrete-boy
I LOVED it - I just started watching Grey's (I'm so predictable sometimes) and the Callie/Hahn storyline was great! And I actually really liked the rest too - but was I the only one thinking the concrete-boy thing was sort of scary? In a good way.. but still scary.. hehe

Thank you Shonda!!!
Yes she was!
Jurnee Smollett was indeed on Cosby, but you know how I recognized her? She was Denise on Full House. Denise, as in Michelle's liittle play friend. How bizzare-O is that?!
Regardless, that girl deserves an Emmy for that performance. She was PHENOMENAL.

I agree!!!!!!
Love her love her
Also Eve's Bayou
Great acting
Finally, someone else who
Finally, someone else who likes Brooke Smith! It's hard to find a fan of her around here, I've heard. Love. That. Woman.
You can't shake hands with a clenched fist.

I see in the fture
I see in the future the writters f*cking up this Callie / Erica relationship. You know they will probably bring Sloan into it again. Probably have Erica fall for Sloan. No way are they going to have a HAPPY Lesbian relationship move forward on this show. I might not even watch next year because of the don't want to go through the almost certain dissapointment that will surely come.

Just me ...
Hoping for the best...
I'm hoping that next season continues with the Torres/Hahn storyline... I know that for dramatic license couples break up, get back together, move on to other people, etc. etc. but I would just love it if for once we'd get to have a couple who would stay together, so here's hoping!
I think that Sara Ramirez and Brooke Smith are two of the better actresses on network TV these days and I love how honest their portrayals of each of their characters has been and continues to be. It's also nice to see some "real size" women on TV and not just size 0-2. For that alone, plus the diversity of characters that have been on the show, Shonda gets high marks in my book.
Thanks for all the great mini recaps over the season carolinagrrrl, good job keeping us all up to date!
(Self Appointed) "#1 Bridget McManus Fan"
I have to start out by
I have to start out by saying this: Thank you, Shonda Rhimes. Thank you for bringing Grey’s Anatomy full circle, and back to the show that I fell in love with four years ago.
That was about my reaction exactly.
I've been watching Grey's since literally the first episode, all through its MAJOR ups and downs, hoping and later on knowing that it would get back to this point. I was entirely pleased with the episode as a whole, and for all my bitching and moaning about no lesbians, ever, on here? NOW WE HAVE THEM. In the forms of two of my favorite characters! I like that they kept Erica's sexuality pretty much undercover, because I think she's actually a lesbian, she's just not very out. I've been thinking that ever since that Brooke Smith interview when she said she thought it would be cool if Hahn was gay. But the whole Callie thing just makes it even better, because I love and respect her as an actress and a person, and I know she'll really do the storyline justice. Both of these actresses have been very vocal about their support for the gay community. Brooke Smith has played gay before, and Sara is good friends with T. R. Knight, and I think she spoke out for him a few years ago during the Isaiah Washington debacle. So, I think in their hands, the romance can definitely flourish, if Shonda decides to give them that. Which I really, really hope she does.
Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...
my take...
I saw the opening Callie/Sloan sex scene a bit differently. I think after the elevator kiss, she knew she was into Erica, and she actually liked it when he was talking about Erica kissing her, etc. She was using his body in order to act out her feelings for Erica. And if you think about the *kind* of sex they had...it fits. Judging from Erica's eyes in the bar scene with Addison, I'm pretty sure she had feelings for Callie. And, when they laughed about being called lesbians by Addison, there was something weird about Erica's face. Like, she was thinking...'it's obvious?'
Anyway, I love this show more now! I think that George will pass his exams (if you fail twice you are not asked back and TR Knight isn't leaving the show), and I can't wait to see how Sloan deals with the 'Callica' romance. As for comments about it being a "real" lesbian relationship...well, none of the heterosexual ones have been all that real - it is TV after all. But it would be nice if they could be happy for a little while!
Word
I thought the same thing about the sex scene 'cause she really gets into it when he says that Erica is kissing her "the way she needs to be kissed" and then she has to shut him up, in order to check her pager, when the word finger is introduced. + she says "That was really, REALLY working for me." (I'm of course paraphrasing) And that seemed honest.
Oh what an episode. I'll know it by heart soon.
great turnon for her
I agree with you two!! I think that Callie was turned on by the threesome talk and Sloan realised that she was really into Erica --> when they were taking a break from the operation, that's pretty much exactly what sloan tells erica.
Sloan: It's inappropriate, don't you think? Thinking about sex during surgery? I'm just saying what I've been wittnessing all day.
Callie: This poor kid's entire body was cased into cement and, his legs are crushed, his vessels and nerves nearly cut off completely, and still, I was turned on. This entire time I've been turned on because of you, and your dirty talk.
Sloan: It wasn't my dirty talk, what I was dirty talking about.
Callie: What?
Sloan: Erica. You and Erica.
Callie: No, thats (pause) No.
Sloan: Callie.
Callie: What?
Sloan: It's ok. I wish I was all someone thought about.
I'll know the Callica scenes by heart soon too!! I just can't stop watching it unfold!!
http://babydyke.blogspot.com/ - my take on all things lesbian
finally!
Impressed but not hopeful
I have to say I started watching this because of the lesbian storyline and in the meantime the show has grown on me. Before I would only watch occasionally and wouldn't really make an effort to keep up with it.
I really liked the season finale, it was a really good episode. I especially liked the fact that the relationship between concrete boy and his love interest (the girl that wouldn't admit she liked him) sort of mirrored Torres's inner devils about wanting to be with Erica. It was interesting how the writers explored that paralel and by doing so also sent a message regarding the fact that questions about choosing to love someone and being afraid of what other people might think also happen in hetero relationships. I honestly loved that. The dialogs Torres had with the young teen that couldn't admit she liked concrete boy where very much her inner dialogs about being afraid to be with Erica and, again, I have to say I was impressed by the way the writers handled it.
Regarding the future, I don't really know if I have much hope... Even though I was impressed with this episode, I honestly think they brought in a lesbian story line in order to put the show at peace with its LGBT audience after the homophobic incident on set... I am afraid that once they feel they have accomplished that, they will just drop the story just like they have dropped so many other love stories in the past.
My tolerance for the show wont be a lot if they do that, so let's wait and see.
Probably
diversity of writers -> diversity of storlines
I have to agree with you that the writers did a great job combining the medical case with the Callica storyline. they do that quite often, that what a patient goes through mirrors what the doctors go through.
I have to disagree with you, I don't think they put in the storyline because of the T.R. Knight/Isaiah Washington incident. They have featured lgbt storylines before that happened and I think that because the writers are a very divers group of people, they will continue to have those storyline. Joe, the bar owner, is gay and they had one episode where they showed Joe with his boyfriend (that episode won a glaad award). they had a storyline about a transgendered patient who was suffering from cancer, I guess that might have been before the incident as well. then they had the storyline with the gay soldier three episodes ago. I guess there are more, but I can't remember the other storylines right now. there was a male patient who teased George, which was a "fun" storyline about a man completely comfortable with his sexuality. so I guess the diversity of the writers just really reflects on the storylines!

On call room action
Not getting too excited yet.......
Like others, I'm not a regular watcher of Grey's Anatomy, but I have become invested in the Hahn/Torres relationship. I will not, however, get my hopes up for the relationship.
The fact that Shonda Rhimes always mentions McSteamy when she talks about the future of the relationship makes my enthusiasm tepid at best. I just know there's going to be a threesome written into the plot, and it's going to make my stomach churn. I know Rhimes has mentioned the chemistry between Erica, Callie, and Sloan at least a few times, and I always wonder why the heck Mark Sloan is still being mentioned in regards to this new relationship. Shouldn't his part of the relationship be over? Shouldn't we be focusing on the two ladies now? So again, that's why I'm not jumping up and down and getting all excited yet. I think Mark Sloan is going to be a major factor in this storyline, and I don't like it.
On the positive side of things, both actresses are amazing. I know Sara Ramirez gets alot of love on AE, and indeed she should. But I have such a crush on Brooke Smith now. She's a freaking force of nature on that show. Love the complex character of Hahn, and the confidence in which Smith brings to her character. However, there's still so much we don't know about Hahn yet.... there's so much vulnerability there, and I hope the writers delve deeper into her character, and don't screw it all up. Yup, yup. Love me some Hahn. HAAAAHHHHNNNNN!
So again, not getting my hopes up, and not doing somersaults of Callica celebration just yet.
Brooke Smith!

AGREED. I just love Brooke Smith. I love Hahn too, obviously. I've basically loved her since she asked Mark and Derek if they were a couple (lol), and the post-strike episodes made me love her even more. I hope we find out more about her too, although we have learned more as the season has gone along (like her being all awkward and not making friends easily...aww).
RE: HAAAAHHHHNNNNN!
Breakerfall, you just made me snort coffee out of my nose with that ref. LOL!
I'm glad I'm not the only one with a serious case of the Hahn love - hanging around some other boards out there, there seems to be a lot of hate directed her way (not to mention a lot of "OMG! Callie is so straight! She and Sloan should get married and have babies!")
I love Hahn, I want to know a lot more about her, but I also kinda like the fact we're getting to know her slowly and I really like her and Callie together. My fingers and toes are crossed that the storyline carries in an interesting and positive vein next season.
some more information about Erica
Now Don't Ge me Wrong . . .
I am ecstatic about the Callie-Erica relationship. It finally gives me a reason to like a show that I have never been able to get into in the past (even when my straight-girl crush was borderline obsessed with it). Which just goes to show you, writers, producers, and miscellaneous Hollywood big-wigs, that if you throw the lesbian community a bone every now and then, we will flock to your shows; FLOCK, I say!
But am I the only one who thinks that the kissing on this show really sucks? It never looks like something I would really want to do, straight or gay. What is it with these surgeons that none of them seem able to kiss?
Granted, I've only watched season 4 and part of season 1, so you die-hards can tell me if these doctors really are capable kissers and are just having an off year.

Trihardist's Blogtepid kissing
I actually felt that way about the big meredith-derek kiss at the end. I was like "this is supposed to be the jaw-dropping kiss?" I went back and watched it again a day later just to make sure I wasn't letting my excitment about Callie and Erica overshadow the kiss. That wasn't it. It was...not that good. At least, I didn't think so.
I also thought the best thing about the Erica-Callie kiss was the lead in. Sara Ramirez's great portrayal of Callie's nerves right before the kiss made me nervous and excited and so much more estatic when they did kiss. But, the kiss itself was a little peckish and, yeah, could have been a little hotter. I'm not complaining though. Not only is it great to see two strong, likeable, well-developed (no pun intended) female characters on network tv kissing, it's even better that they are both so damn hot.
On the other hand, I think Katherine Heigl is kinda...annoying, I guess. But I think she looks like a good kisser.
By the way, why doesn't sandra oh get to kiss anyone? Give her a rebound guy. ...or girl. I think in a few episodes, Addison should be availible again.
I'm sooooo happy...
with the way this episode turned out. Really happy. Doing my happy dance (and trust me, I usually do NOT dance) happy.
As for the future... I'm not willing to give up right away. Shonda mentioned talking to the people from GLAAD, so I'm thinking that stereotyping (and how to avoid it) in tv must have come up. I have good hopes. And there's a lot of ways Sloane could be 'used' to get some bumps in the road for Callica, instead of doing a threesome.
For example; what if he realizes he likes Callie more than he thought, and he confronts her? Which could lead to major drama of the 'who do I choose' kind (and of course we all hope she'd end up choosing Erica)
Or what if Callie finds out she's pregnant? She would need to tell Erica, and Sloane, and there'd have to be tough decisionmaking since it pretty much puts a new relationship under a lot of strain. Drama people, drama ;)
NOOOO!!!
I would have not responded at all, since I put in my 2 cents earlier, but please... let's hope that we don't once again go down that tired and overused path of making the "lesbian or bisexual" woman find out she's pregnant! I don't think I could handle that again, not after they just used that stunt (and quite poorly) on the DOA TV show Cashmere Mafia.
I just hope that Shonda and her team of writers will come up with something more original and for the sake of lesbians everywhere allow us some semblance of happiness with at least one relationship on network TV!
Okay, stepping off the soapbox now and going back to reading comments!
(Self Appointed) "#1 Bridget McManus Fan"
We never got Cashmere Mafia
We never got Cashmere Mafia over here, so I was unaware that they had tried such a storyline.
Alas, I'm not hoping they go down that road, I was merely pointing out that there are other ways than the threesome somebody mentioned earlier
You asked for it...

thank you thank you thank you:) i absolutely looooooove that song.
And remember that, in a world of ordinary mortals, you are a Wonder Woman!
A great episode
I am so glad that this end of the season show was good enough to make up for an optherwise lack luster season. This one had me crying and laughing, which was why I loved this show so much the first season.
I've always loved that Sara Ramirez was presented as sexy even though she is not the usual toothpick, like Meredith. So I hope now that they continue the lesbian story line without going for the stereotypical storylines.
