"American Idol": Letting it be on Beatles nightLast night on American Idol, the new set was unveiled to mark the beginning of this year’s finals. Ryan Seacrest made a big to-do about it, and the cameras swooped around the stage to show off all the changes. I, for one, didn’t see that much difference, but I do like that the band is now on a balcony above the stage. That was cool. When they finally got to the singing part of the show (remember that?), they revealed that the tunes for the evening would be those of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Apparently, the Idol producers decided it was a good idea to butcher songs by the greatest songwriters of all time, rather than the usual mediocre ones. I love the Beatles, and I figured out early that the performances would take on one of two forms: phenomenal or disastrous. Those are the only options for songs of this caliber. Boy, was I dead on. I
am sorry to report that on the aforementioned scale, the ladies were
more frequently found on the “disastrous” end of things. Particularly
Kristy Lee Cook, singing “8 Days a Week.” I believe this
may have been one of the worst performances on Idol, ever (and
I’m a country music fan!). Check out the Yuck. On the other hand, two of my favorite contenders were absolutely fantastic. Carly Smithson, everyone’s favorite Irish “amateur,” sang “Come Together.” In her pre-performance interview, Carly revealed that the song was very familiar to her; she sings it almost every time she performs. I’m so glad to finally see a “breakout” performance from her after all the hype. I find myself not wanting to like her each time she comes on stage, yet she continually changes my mind. Good for you, Carly. But, as much as I liked Carly, my favorite performer (for the third week in a row!) was Brooke White. This girl has some major talent. At the beginning of the show, I thought (and hoped) that no one would have the audacity to try to sing “Let It Be” or “Yesterday,” so I let out an audible groan when I heard Brooke say she would be singing “Let It Be.” After seeing her incredibly heartfelt (I feel like Paula now) rendition, though, I am happily eating crow. That girl has some major talent. And she’s gorgeous.
Most of the other women’s performances weren’t particularly noteworthy, and I think (in addition to Kristy Lee) they are all at risk of elimination. I know some of you are fans of Amanda Overmeyer, but I admit that I haven’t been able to really get behind her voice. I respect her originality and her style, but she still seems incredibly out of place on this show. My other two favorites from last night were David Cook, singing “Eleanor Rigby” and Michael Johns singing “Across the Universe” (which sounded very much like Rufus Wainwright’s version). I am including entirely too many men, aren’t I? My highly unimportant opinion is that either Kristy Lee or Syesha Mercado will go home tonight. Your thoughts? I think
You nailed both calls. I think Brooke might just take the number one spot for the ladies. She just seems to get better and better. I hope we get to see more of her playing the piano...she is lovely. (I'm still pulling for Amanda...err...of course I am a nurse and therefore a li'l biased, ya think? ;p) And as much as I was hoping Kristy Lee would make something develop (after telling her story of selling her horse to get to auditions, and hopes of winning to buy it back). I think she really blew it last night. These contestants had better start making some better song choices, it could win or lose this competition for them.
I think.....

*nodding in agreement* with JHB!!!
Have a question....
Katharine McPhee
Got married to actor Nick Cokas and left the RCA label. I think she is still currently seeking a new label. Not positive, haven't heard any recent updates. She is going to be starring in her first major movie role in 8/08 in the movie "I Know What Boys Like".
She'll also be on Idol
Agreed-izzle
American Idol
Brooke's performance of Let it Be actually got me all teary. She was absolutely phenominal. Best performance of the night, I whole-heartedly agree.
But surprise of the night? Chikize! I was floored.
I hope Christy Lee Cook goes home tonight too, that'd be my pick as well.
_________
American Idol
Paula Abdul
Hah!
I noticed that too and immediately said it correctly aloud. Hah.
_________
po-tay-to / po-ta-to
actually either way of pronunciation is correct

Yeah, either way is fine.
Yeah, either way is fine. In fact, the preferred American pronunciation is 'nitch'. It is also the way it is pronounced in the sciences which is where I've been hearing it and using it for years.
Hmm.
"I believe this may have been one of the worst performances on Idol, ever (and I’m a country music fan!)."
I said the exact same thing last night. That was one of, if not, the worst performance in AI history. It was painful to sit through. She should have been gone two weeks ago. Just when I start to think people are voting the correct way...psh. Yeah, who am I kidding?
I think I'm the only one who doesn't think Brooke White has mad talent. She's an average singer. She's got a nice amount of sparkle, but she just doesn't do it for me. Of course, she's gonna be around probably until the end. Blah. I just don't have much to say about that.
Carly on the other hand completely does. That was an amazing rendition of "Come Together" last night. Amazing. She's just got that thing you can't put your finger on. I watch her, and then I realize that I am either smiling like an idiot or catching flies. They keep talking about the stupid X factor, but it's real. She's definitely got amazing charisma.
I'm less and less impressed with Michael Johns as the weeks go by.
Archuleta completely screwed up last night, forgetting the lyrics 3 times. It was a total mess.
The Chris Daughtry wannabe, whose name I can't even remember sang "Eleanor Rigby." I was unhappy to hear that it sounded scarily like a rock version I'd previously heard (that was much better). Really. We've done this already. I think Simon hit his head, because his responses are similar to the ones Mr. Daughtry got when he was in the competition.
Jason Castro, I love. He's such a singer/songwriter type. I adore when his voice breaks. He's most certainly not the best singer in the competition, but he's an interesting persona that we've never been treated to before. He looks too much like a girl sometimes, though. :D
Amanda...oh, Amanda. Her voice isn't consistent enough. I thought she was going to be one of the most promising contestants when I saw her first audition. But then I heard her sing on stage finally, and I was so disappointed. I dunno. She was great last week, though.
I love that the tension is back between Simon and Seacrest. I effing despise Seacrest, always have. I just want Simon and Nigel to can his ass. Ugh. He's such an arrogant, little midget. Aaand, Paula is such a wino.
They need to make Amanda
They need to make Amanda sing a ballad and if she gravels her way through that, too, she needs to go. There is nothing fun about listening to her at all. I keep thinking, stop smoking and clear your throat. It's painful.
I agree that Kristy Lee Cook's performance was bad but that's because she tried too hard. As soon as she said, "They told me to make things country!" I just shook my head and said, "Oh, sooo young." If she'd just let her own style show naturally, I think she'd be fine.
The thing I am totally not getting is the David Archuletta love. I hang out at some predominantly gay male boards and, in their own words, "If a million guys didn't want to make him their bottom boy, he'd be gone." I think that's hilarious and may explain my utter bewilderment at his voting base.
I'm worried for Brook. Does anyone think she might fall victim to the "Oh, she's safe so I'll vote for someone else" deal? Hope not. I'd love it to be a Brooke, Carly finale and then for them both to say, "Screw this record deal, we can do better on our own" and quit before the winner is announced.
Kristy Lee Cook
Glad I wasn't alone on the hatred of KLC's performance.
Also, I should have mentioned that the only reason I was rooting for her to be "safe" was that I didn't want to have to endure a repeat of that performance. Too late for that now though. I used to think it was "sweet" that they let the departed contestant have one last hurrah, but I seriously changed the channel when KLC sang again tonight. Too much. It was gross.

A Day in the Life
Thank god no one sang "A Day in The Life" That is one of my favourite songs ever, and if someone butchered it I would hate them for the rest of my life.
A Day in The Life
Brooke Love
I really liked Chickezie's performance, I was a little nervous about him after his first performance, but he seems to be redeeming himself.
David Archuleta broke my heart last night, it was just horrible. But I completely agree with you Brooke is amazing. I loved her rendition of love is a battlefield so much that I paid the 99 cents for a 2min song

Brooke and Jason
My favorites are Brooke and Jason definitey. I can't believe Christy is still there. She has been my least favorite. Amanda I loved in the beginning but it seems like she has no different "textures" in her voice =P I think she may get voted off next week.

If you judge people, you have no time to love them.
Remember 2 things: Leave only your footprints and love your mother.
I love Syesha so hope she
Yay so glad David Hernandez
I'm confused...
Carly Smithson is married
Carly Smithson is married (to a man) and mentions him often in interviews.
True happiness, we are told, consists in getting out of one's self, but the point is not only to get out, you must stay out; and to stay out you must have some absorbing errand. -Henry James
Why are they.....
Are they really?!
I wasn't really paying much attention to the results show. I kept walking in and out of the living room, especially when they let them sing again.
Lord knows people haven't destroyed those songs enough. We've just got to do it some more.
That's ridiculous. They must be out of ideas or something.
I got such huge vibe from KLC in the first video intro she did. The things that she said, and just the way she carries herself...I think she's at least bisexual. I'm rarely wrong about this stuff, but who cares now? She's gone, and we're all relieved.
:D
