News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Actors we'll watch in (almost) anything

The good folks at EW.com recently released a list of the "50 Actors We'd Watch in Anything" in two parts. As usual for this type of thing, the list was dominated by men — there were only 18 women listed. But I do have to give them kudos for selecting stellar actors.

Kate Winslet, Rosario Dawson, Joan Cusack and Allison Janney

I actually agreed with the majority of the list. And — wait for it — they even included an out lesbian in Cherry Jones!

Jones with partner Sarah Paulson

Admittedly, I don't get to the movies as often as I'd like. I think I have only actually gotten to the theaters once in the past month. So it might be a stretch to say I'd watch these ladies in "anything." I like to think I have standards in some area of my life. I would prefer to call the list "50 Actors That Would Allow Us to Not Hate Ourselves for Paying $9 to See This Crappy Movie."

Edie Falco and Regina King

One thing that should be said about the women EW included is that they have largely good taste in roles to begin with. With few exceptions (I'm looking at you, Joan Cusack; seriously, School of Rock? C'mon!), these actors take on films that viewers would want to see regardless of the cast. But that doesn't mean we don't like the extra incentive.

Kristen Bell and Catherine Keener

And now, without further ado, here are my additions to the list, based on whatever qualifications I feel like using to justify them.

Julia Stiles

I think this picture speaks for itself.

Chandra Wilson

A virtual unknown prior to Grey's Anatomy, Wilson 's career is now taking off. But until she lands a major movie role, we're left with Dr. Bailey (not that I'm complaining). (You can also find her in the background of Sex and the City and Law and Order: SVU.)

Sandra Bullock

Admittedly, Bullock isn't exactly known for her role-selecting savvy (think The Lake House or Speed 2), but who am I to judge? It's OK, Sandra. We forgive you.

Olivia Wilde

Whether she is playing bisexual Alex on The O.C. or bisexual "Thirteen" on House doesn't really matter. Wilde is sublime. I confess, her presence is enough for me to see Year One.

Now, what say you, AfterEllen.com readers? Who doesn't belong on the list? Who is inexplicably omitted?

nighteyes_fog's picture

I go through these "actors

I go through these "actors I'd watch in anything" phases. Some on that list were Kate Winslet, Gillian Anderson, Sophie Ward, Michelle Forbes and Uma Thurman. But admittedly, I find a new obsession before I lap up their entire filmography.

Strangely enough, Sandra Bullock is one of the actresses whose almost every movie I've watched. I don't even really like her, nor her movies in general. But there's definitely something about her that makes a really crappy movie worth watching.

brainfreeze28's picture

eliza duskku!!!

eliza duskku!!! anyone else looking forward to dollhouse?

good list though, definately in agreement. Its always nice to find talented actresses who have the sense to pick good roles.

julia stiles and sandra bullock have always been favorites. i really like kirsten bell and ellen page more recently

deathbyblonde's picture

There are a lot

...But the biggest ones are Shirley McLaine and especially Romola Garai.  I watched Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights for that girl, I'll watch anything.
Ceridwyn2's picture

That I'd add:

That I'd add:

Gillian Anderson, Mary McDonnell, Cate Blanchett, Lucy Lawless, Emma Thompson, Nicola Walker, Eve Myles, Linda Hamilton. There's others, but those are ones my brain came up with at the moment.

deathbyblonde's picture

Eve Myles!

Definitely.

After scanning some other lists, I can't believe I forgot to add:

Mary-Louise Parker - After seeing her as Ruth...well, I was in love.  Weeds only served to cement that love.

Marion Cotillard = Amazing, beautiful and amazing.  After seeing La Vie En Rose, I went out and rented any movie I could find with her in it.

Milla Jovovich - She's incedibly gorgeous and does zombie movies... *LOVE*

Maggie Gylenhall - She's such a great actress, really great, and totally adorable.

Mia Farrow - I still hold that she's one of the most beautiful people to ever walk the planet.  She's amazing.

Nelfy's picture

angelina jolie, anyone??

angelina jolie would be my # 1 on that list (and any other list), for what other reason than to see her would anyone watch Alexander?? or mr & ms smith? or gone in sixty seconds? even though I can at least laugh at mr & ms smith and gone in sixty seconds, which is still better than boring alexander

apart from her, I would say cate blanchett, sandra bullock, catherine zeta-jones. but I have to say I'm in the same situation you are in, I just don't find the time to go to the movies as often as I would like, sadly :(

BAS's picture

But she's dangerous!

Sometimes they put her top-billed because of who she is when she has a tiny role! I sat through a horrible 2 hrs of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for about 5 minutes of Angelina...I learned my lesson and didn't watch Alexander.

Though I loved Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Gone in 60 Seconds. I think I would have liked them even without her, but with her.....

With you on Sandra Bullock. Also Jodie Foster, Lucy Lawless, Renee O'Connor, Alyson Hannigan, Alyssa Milano, and Amber Benson.

Had the pleasure of discovering Latter Days solely because Amber Benson was in it. Turned out to be a small role but the movie was amazing and I might not have seen it otherwise.

Nelfy's picture

yeah, thats kinda true...

I hate it when they do stuff like that though, in all the trailers for high fidelity they featured catherine zeta-jones and in the actual movie she was in about 3 scenes. that movie was good, though, so it didn't bother me that much.

yeah, I'll also watch jodie foster in almost anything, but thats because she only chooses good roles. but I don't watch horror movies, or stuff like the hanibal lector movies, not even to see her

Angelina Jolie

How can anyone forget the Lara Croft movies. She was smoking hot in those tight fitting clothes. And then watch her kick some man's ass, those were good movies. Did anyone see Pushing Tin with her, Billy Bob and John Cusack. Good movie. And don't forget her in the movie with Whoopi in a saniterium, crap I can't remember the name. Anyway, I think she has done enough good movies to dismiss her and her agent's bad taste.
Nelfy's picture

girl, interrupted

yeah, the lara croft movies were good too. I saw pushing tin, she had a small part in that one, right?? I like that one too, especially the scene where billy bod and johns' characters were at the airport and stood behind a plane that was just flying away and they got thrown throught the air - that scene was awsome!!

girl, interrupted is the movie with whoopie, that is one of my favourite movies of all time!! god, I loved her in that, and I just loved the whole film. I think I've seen it a about 10 times already, my parents found it kinda disturbing that I like it so much, but I think they don't really get it...

I think angie made those movies to earn money, because she needs it to travel and donate, so I'll forgive her, but that doesn't make any of the movies better, if you get what I mean ;-)

Another good way to spin

Another good way to spin this is - who makes whatever they star in better?

Zooey Deschanel - she lights up the screen in every role. I haven't seen her in anything I didn't like and I'll probably even sit through the scary looking "The Happening" just to watch her.

Julie Andrews - who says it has to be only young people? I will watch any older movie with Julie and look forward to everything she takes part in currently.

I second Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet. They are chameleons and raise the caliber of everything they're in.

Jodie Foster and Angelina Jolie...!

Seriously?

Julia Stiles... really? She's always pouting. She looks like a fish and here's a news flash she can't act. She's absolutely atrocious. I agree with everyone else on the list but Julia Stiles?

carolinagrrrl's picture

Yup!!

Seriously. Julia Stiles. ;)

For sure.....

Elizabeth Mitchell and Evangeline Lilly...great reasons to watch Lost.

And I'm sure people would agree that it's extra great when an actress plays gay...Elizabeth Mitchell has 3 lesbian roles...love her!

Pirategrrrl's picture

Hey!

I like School of Rock!

and I would NOT watch Julia Stiles in anything. In fact, I won't watch her in most things. And if she does another Shakespeare-turned-modern-life movie, I think my internal organs would explode.

I think the only person on the EW list I disagree with is Neil Patrick Harris and Tom Selleck (though I like Tom better than Neil) ... and I'd replace them with Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett! WHERE WAS CATE?!

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
It's always our self we find in the sea

carolinagrrrl's picture

uh oh...

I didn't mean to offend with the School of Rock comment. To be honest, I laughed at several parts in the movie myself, and didn't completely hate it.

I was more using it as an example because I doubt many would hail it as a necessarily "good" movie. Entertaining? Yes, most likely. But I think you'd be hard pressed to offer it as an example of fine film making.

Also, good call on Tilda Swinton. I should have had her on my list, too!

Pyewacket's picture

I like your list title better! lol

And I so agree with their picks Meryl Streep and Patricia Clarkson!

I would have to add...in no particular order...

1 - Mary-Louise Parker

2 - Sarah Paulson

3 - Lena Headey

4 - Jane Lynch

5 - Piper Perabo

6 - Shelley Conn

7 - Vanessa Williams

8 - Tina Fey

9 - Joan Chen

10 - Jennifer Beals

Had to edit to add...

11 - Holland Taylor!

Okay, I think I am done now.  :)

Can't believe I forgot Piper!

Duh. Geez. Bad me.

What?!! School of Rock...umm...Rocked!!!

I canot BELIEVE  you just knocked School of Rock but posted a pick of the chick from Save the Last Dance! OK- i'm calm again.

Here's my list in absolutely no order:  Cate Blanchett (duh!), Sally Field, Marion Cottilliard (sp?); Meryl Streep, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rosario Dawson (she didn't do anything for me in Kids but DAMN she grabbed me in Sin City!), Angela Bassett, Regina King (she had me at 227!), Anjelica Houston, Isabelle Adjani (stunning), Asia Argento (she looks like a Brazillian girl I had a crush on in college, lol), Michelle Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Mary Steenbergen (I love Cross Creek), Jane Lynch (brilliant!), Jennifer Coolidge (genius!), Charlotte Gainsbourg, Helen Mirren, Ellen Burstyn, Catherine Keener, Tilda Swinton and the lovely, lovely Sarah Shahi.

Captain Jax Havok's picture

this one is BEYOND obvious -_-

where is Evan Rachel Wood?! o.o i haven't seen one movie of her's so far that i didn't absolutely love! :p she's brilliant in every film she is in. she has her own style and shines in every scene she's in.
shortypants's picture

Just A Few More>>

A few more popped in to my brain:

Elizabeth Keener (those Keener sisters, I tell ya'!), Kerri Washington, Sanaa Lathan, Maria Bello (although, I think, both Maria and Kerri were in She Hate Me, I. Will. Not. Watch. That), Nia Long, Jennifer Connelly (she had me back in the day with Labyrinth and Seven Minutes in Heaven.  Good Lord, I actually had my mom buy me loafers b/c she wore them!), Julianne Moore (she was devastating in The Hours), Juliet Lewis (she has this ability to just pull you in to anything she's doing.  Well, almost anything.  Remember Enough?  Didn't think so), Nicole Kidman (I loved Birth and The Others), Sarah Jessica Parker (b/c I was one of those 12 year old little girls who was just completely taken with Girls Just Wanna Have Fun) and finally, the woman who breaks my heart each time I gaze on her face, Eva Green.

Jessie Maims's picture

I have one.

Frances McDormand. Seriously.

Ellen Page... deffinitly... but the new movie "smart people" might make me a hypocrite.....

RedReeder's picture

Where's Glennie?

The big three who get me to the theatre every time or I watch over and over again, almost compulsively, are Sigourney Weaver, Glenn Close and Emma Thompson.  I’m easily caught by the Ellen Ripley/Helen Hudson, Jenny Fields/Patty Hewes, or Elinor Dashwood/Beatrice characters, but for me, these 3 make everything special.  With them, even small roles or silly characters become jewels, and I often find myself equally captivated with characters like Debra Moorhouse, Alicia Clark and Nanny McPhee.

Other heavy hitters that I'll stand in line for: the C/Kates-Blanchett, and no not Hudson, Winslet, Tilda Swinton,  and certainly Meryl Streep.  Jodie's even got me seriously contemplating buying a ticket to see "Nim's Island."  Considering I paid to see "Shadows and Fog;" obviously, I'll watch anything she's in.

Punkin's picture

How could you forget?

Whoopi Goldberg and Charlyze Theron....Style, talent, intelligence, and who cares if the movie is one that should go direct-to-the-trashbin? These 2 women are worth watching even if they're just reading a phone directory!
Applemania's picture

In Agreement with Olivia Wilde

Seriously that girl has just got sex appeal oozing out of her every pour, she just has to stare for a split second and i forget who i am!

 I felt like i should contribute a list of a few female actresses which also have an hypnotic stance about them, List as follows in no particualar order;

Milla Jovovich

Kate Beckingsale

Natalie Portman

Katie Sackhoff

Jessica Alba

Eliza Cuthbert

Missy Peregrym

Scarlett Johanssen

Maggie Gyllenhaul

Famke Janssen

..........

more for the list

two words: AUDREY TAUTOU. two more words: PARKER POSEY (frankly, i'm shocked nobody has mentioned her yet). And what about claire danes, janeane garofalo, jenny shimizu (though she's not in a lot of things...she leaves her mark when she is : ), laura dern, queen latifah, margaret cho, wanda sykes, maggie gyllenhaal, lauren graham, reese witherspoon, piper perabo, cynthia nixon, chloe sevigny, natasha lyonne, salma hayek, keira knightley, julia louis-dreyfuss, katherine heigl, julie delpy, and i concur with the addition of julia stiles.

And how on earth could JODIE FOSTER or DIANE KEATON have not made that list????? i'm glad they gave rosario her props though. what a hottie :)

and just to go against the grain a little, i gotta admit that i kinda can't stand sandra bullock. she rubs me the wrong way. same with scarlett johanssen and cate blanchett.  i know, as a good dyke, that i'm supposed to love cate blanchett...so could somebody please tell me a good movie to see where i will fall in love with her like i'm supposed to.

As Animal would say...

Leaving Cate Blanchette, Natalie Portman & Maggie Gyllenhaal off of the list is just wrong...

Also, what about Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Rahda Mitchell & Clea Duvall?

SmilinHobbes's picture

Here's my list

I pretty much agree with carolinagrrrl's list, but have to admit Julia Stiles has never been one of my favorite actresses. And, personally, Two Weeks Notice makes up for any crappy movie Sandra Bullock ever makes (and sadly there have been numerous). It is up there as one of my favorite movies ever. And finally, my list, in no particular order:

1) Holland Taylor

2) Rachel McAdams

3) Maggie Gyllenhaal

4) Joan Cusack

5) Emma Thompson

6) Claire Danes

7) Tina Fey

And honorary mention to Jordana Brewster, because although I won't seek out a movie with her in it, if i happen to stumble upon one, I won't change the channel. Case in point: The Invisible Circus.

*edit*

How in the world did I forget these two women?!?

Jane Lynch - just brilliant, but my favorite of hers is Best in Show. And did anybody catch her on My Name Is Earl? She plays an amazing crazy person!

Lily Tomlin - I absolutely died laughing at her character in I Heart Huckabees... "oh wow wow wow"

  4. Mary Louise Parker
  5. Catherine Deneuve

im going to have to go with the following:

ridiculously sexy / awesome older women:
rene russo
holland taylor
jane lynch

milla jovovich (gorgeous)
emily blunt (so subtley sexy)

i love how many people were in agreement over sandra bullock. i admit it, i liked the lake house. i even cried in it. honestly, it doesnt matter what she does - hokey comedy to action pic to psychological thriller - she's always understatedly sexy and totally watchable.

I can't believe

that no one has mentioned Helen Mirren. The woman is an outstanding actress. Definitely one of the best actresses ever to come out of Britain, and we've produced some greats.

And I want to add to the people who want Angelina Jolie, Gillian Anderson, Amber Benson, Dame Judi Dench and the sublime Jodie Foster on the list. Jodie Foster - seriously, what more could you want? She's crazy smart, incredibly talented, and gorgeous.

And I can't talk about actors without mentioning that I'll watch anything with Anthony Hopkins or Tom Hanks in. Now those guys are fantastic in practically everything they do. Just had to mention it.

I go through phases where I'll watch absolutely everything an actress is in, and then I'll move onto someone else, but I still love the actresses I've been through those phases with and dig out their stuff at regular intervals. My top 3 though, and not many people seem to agree with me on these, are Megan Mullally, Jorja Fox, and (one I've already mentioned) Amber Benson. I have a crazy love for Megan - too much, I've been told!

I'm the definition of a film geek, so I could run with this forever, but I think I'll spare you that!

what, no mary stuart masterson?

I'd watch Mary Stuart Masterson watch paint dry. I watched Bad Girls for her (she was a prostitute who killed someone) and Bed of Roses (where she had no chemistry whatsoever with Christian Slater and wore really bad 90s clothes). That woman is just brilliance. And I'll have to add Clea Duvall to that list too - Wallflower sucked(sorry, not a Daryl Hannah fan) but Clea rocked in that. And while I have a great many actresses I fancy, there are only a few that I'll watch in ANYTHING.

If we're going to talk about actors, I'll just stick my hand up for Colin Firth and John Cusack too. I think I own almost every single John Cusack movie - but as Malinda said, he's lesbianish, so I don't feel so confused!
