Critics' Choice Awards roundup

The Golden Globes have been canceled, but the the writers’ strike didn’t prevent the live broadcast of the Critics' Choice Awards from pressing on last night. But the strike it did have its effects. Many winners noted that they were speaking off the cuff because they wanted to respect the strike and did not write speeches.

Host D.L. Hughley’s commentary was incredibly awkward, and it seemed that all his jokes were about race. Probably the oddest comment of the night for me came when Hughley dubbed Brad Pitt an “honorary black person” for seemingly no reason. And several times Hughley told the crowd that they needed to lighten up and laugh once in a while.

Despite that, there were many bright spots during the evening. For one, it seemed that every two minutes Pitt and AfterEllen.com’s No. 2 hottie, Angelina Jolie, were on the screen, looking just as fabulous as ever.

Additionally, there were some fantastic female winners throughout the evening.

Nikki Blonsky, breakout star of Hairspray, won the award for Best Young Actress.

Blonsky shared the award for Best Acting Ensemble with the rest of the Hairspray cast, which includes Queen Latifah (AfterEllen.com Hot 100 No. 55), Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow and, of course, John Travolta in drag.

Winner for Best Supporting Actress was Amy Ryan for Gone Baby Gone.

Julie Christie won Best Actress for her role in Away From Her, but was not there to accept the award.

Probably the most exciting win of the night was Diablo Cody’s award for Best Writer for Juno. In a category that is usually completely dominated by men, that win was well deserved. It marked the first time since 2003 that a woman has won a writing award at the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the first time that a woman has won the award on her own since the show’s inception in 1995.

Juno also won for Best Comedy Movie and was nominated for Best Acting Ensemble. Since Cody was not at the awards show, Ellen Page (nominee for Best Actress) and Allison Janney accepted the award on Cody's behalf.

    Thanks for this posting about the Critics Choice Awards... this may be one of the few awards shows where fans like myself who enjoy seeing what everyone is wearing and who's with who can still do so, in light of the canceled Golden Globes and the impending lack of star power possibly at the upcoming Oscars.  
     
    I fully support the writers and what they are asking for, however for fans of the whole awards season this year is going to suck all around.  I think that we still have the SAG awards and the Spirit Awards, which were both given the okay by the WGA to go ahead as scheduled, so yeah for those 2.  
     
    I do realize that all these awards shows are pats on the backs mainly to the actors/producers, et. al. and that of course without the writers none of these movies would even exist to begin with, but it's still a guilty pleasure to watch the awards shows nonetheless, even if I mute my TV when most of the winners give their speeches... see some really good writing could come in handy right about then.

    Remarkably i caught the re-air of the awards on a local station. (Occassionaliy they air something good.)

    I think Brad Pitt was dubbed an honarary black person for all his work in New Orleans for rebuilding after Katrina.

    Can i also say how powerful Gone Baby Gone was, it was nice that Amy Ryan won.You have to see it. I don't get all the Hairspray love but to each his own.

    I did a little skip when i saw Emily Deschanel and Ellen Page but when Katie holmes appeared that was a 'huh' moment. ( She's alive!! Still an Actress!!)

     And yes It was nice to see what everyone was wearing. No Golden Globes suck. But we support the writers .

    I am pretty sure I haven't seen anything that was nominated (in my defense, Hairspray is as far as I know the only one that's made it to Sweden), so who wins or not is rather irrelevant to me.

    However, I would like to say that I very much appreciate the lovely pictures of all the lovely ladies! Angelina and Allison Janney look particularly gorgeous! Thank you very much for posting!

    I'm just glad that she's finally gotten a mention in a blog, especially since Juno has garnered so much attention. Good writing doesn't write itself...no, there's a former stripper from the Twin Cities penning it. That woman rocks!

    What is with this trend of dresses, shirts, and blouses that all look like potato sacks with belts? I don't understand it. Can anyone explain this!

    Tell me.. why does Katie resemble skeletor in that picture? Is Tom not feeding her? She also looks as if she has aged 5- 10 years.... mother hood or something isnt kind to her.

    A lot of D.L.'s humor is race related anyway, and as for Pitt, Echodiana's got the right idea. It's for Pitt's Project Green..er, project down in New Orleans - though he isn't just helping the black folks. In anycase, cheers to him for helping more than the government did.

    I second the comment that Kaite looks like Skeletor. By the power of She-ra, you need to get the hell away from Tom!

    I also second the comment that Queen should not wear pants suits like that and still cling to be straight, if not narrow. Don't get me wrong, she looks good in it - too good. Honestly Queen, I love you, and in some ways you've been a role model for me, but I wish you would come out already.

    i'm not so familiar with the award shows so why is it okay to have (and go to) the critic's choice awards and protest the golden globes? isn't it a bit hypocritical?
