"Vanity Fair": the Annie Leibovitz covers

There’s a half-funny, half-embarrassing story concerning me and women on the cover of magazines. It involves the year 1998, a newsagent, Denise Richards, a copy of FHM, and my firm insistence — to a male friend of mine who happened across me browsing — that I didn’t realize FHM was a men’s magazine. I think he believed me ... just about.

Nevertheless, for most of my teen years I didn’t dare to cast more than a furtive eye in the direction of the men’s magazine section. Fortunately, they’re not the only magazines to feature lots of glamorous women. In fact, one of my favorite magazine covers was from around the same period as the FHM fiasco, in 1997:

Now, I couldn’t care less about Cameron Diaz, but Kate Winslet and Claire Danes in the same frame? Be still, my beating teenage Titanic- and My So-Called Life–loving heart!

What I didn’t realize at the time was that this cover was part of what has become an annual series for Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue, by a rather well-known photographer named Annie Leibovitz. VanityFair.com is currently running a retrospective of these foldout covers (which typically entice you in with three beautiful women on the front, and then open out to reveal about seven more). That means you can time-travel all the way back to the first one in 1995:

Um. Yes. Normally I think that the expression “legs for days” is an exaggeration, but in the case of Uma Thurman (pictured second from left), it might actually be true. And I’m not even going to get started on that picture of Nicole Kidman.

Also online is the latest cover, for 2008:

While I’m not mad about the sickly pastel theme, I vote an enthusiastic yes to anything involving Emily Blunt and an old-fashioned bathing costume. And is it just me, or does Elizabeth Banks (pictured third from right) strangely resemble Leisha Hailey?

There’s the famous Scarlett and Keira cover from 2006:

One of the most interesting things about the large ensemble shots is to see who comes out looking best. While Nicole Kidman looks Titian and goddess-like, for instance, and none of the people around her is exactly plain, I think the 2001 cover shot belongs to Kate Winslet:

2004 is stolen by a Monroe-like Scarlett Johansson, and, rather to my surprise, Jennifer Aniston:

One thing that bothers me about these covers is that, while they do sometimes feature women of color, they almost always seem to be on the inside part of the foldout, rather than the front. In fact, the only front-cover example I could find in the 14 years these covers have been running is Thandie Newton in 1999:

It may also come as no surprise to hear that 14 years have gone past without a single out lesbian or bisexual actress appearing in any of the Hollywood Issue cover shots. This is a problem that must be solved. Either Annie needs to ring up Jodie, or a lot of actresses need to come out this year. In fact, a combination of both would be nice.

    The one with the red

The one with the red background is so my favourite. Many of my favourite women in film are on that one. The other ones... not so much... I don't even know many of the 2008 version! But yeah, that one girl looks like Leisha, and it should've been her actually! Who's with me?! Haha! Wow, and why the hell hasn't Jodie been on one of them!! Now I'm mad... like she isn't one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

    Me too

Another fan of the red (Deneuve!!!). I always think Kate Winslet looks like Emmanuelle Beart in that photo, it's the hair I think.

The 08 one is particularly underwhelming (though it's already up on my wall). They all look like they are trying to ease particularly bad stomach aches (in posture if not expression). I think Elizabeth Banks looks more like Kristanna Loken than Leisha Hailey.

(Don't ask and Marlene won't tell)

    spotlight!

i really like the one with the spotlights where they are all kinda "behind the scenes"...but of course A naked Keira Knightley always seems to win me over. they are all amazing photos of particularly amazing women...not to mention they're all fine as hell!

    Vanity Fair

I've subscribed to Vanity Fair off and on for about 10 years now, and the issue I look forward to most of all is the Hollywood Issue. I love the fact that Kate Winslet has made several appearances and is also in the top 3 of AfterEllen.com hot 100 list. It would be very cool to have an out lesbian in the line up, and more diversity is definately a must. I wonder, who gets to choose these women?

    Good conclusion

I can't agree more on your conclusion Browne.

    Such beautiful photos anyway...

    A lesbian issue...

Excellent idea. More diversity...I agree. I love Annie's work no matter what, but I think an out lesbian and more diversity would add depth to her work.  That's My opinion.

    annie leibovitz

i just wanted to say while there has been no lesbian on the cover but annie, the photographer, is gay, so in some way the gay presence is there. :)

Cate in a tux. She wins!

How about that Cate Blanchet in the tux and buzz haircut? I totally think she owns the 2001 issue (tha fact that she's holding on to a certain Ms Redgrave kinda helps). Kate and Meryl look phabulous as well...

    I just love

Annie Leibovitz' work, she is THE best photographer of this and previous generation. Brilliant compositions and especially her use of color is so typical. I can recognize her photos from hundred feet away. The Vanity Fair covers (the february oscar edition) are my favorites and I never buy the magazine except for that edition. Great story and great analysis because it is poignant that there;s never been a black (except Newton) or gay woman on the cover. I do guess it's time Ellen or Halle got a spot there!

I'm not colorblind, I know the world is black & white

Anyone knows how to take such gorgeous photographs?

Annie Leibovitz rocks! I love her works ever since I was old enough to take an interest in fashion magazines. Her photographs always take my breath away. How she makes all those beautiful women even more beautiful all at once is beyond me. Anyone knows the techniques she uses in these Vanity Fair covers?

    On the fold-out

Leibovitz's Vanity Fair cover spreads are breath-takingly gorgeous and lush, I'll give her that, but everyone knows Vanity Fair's covers are all about the 2nd and 3rd fold-out. And in most cases, it's not just the women who get pushed to the fold in male/female spreads, among the female only spreads, if you haven't noticed a pattern already from above images selectedmost women of color are even moreso than not immediately placed on the 2nd and 3rd fold (with the exception of the Thandie Newton example), seeing the "pastel-paradise" spread with Zoe Saldana and America Ferrerra, just to name a few...
